  • West-Eastern Divan, inspired by the poetry of the Persian poet Hafis and the largest collection of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is one of the most intimate and central engagements of Western literary history with the Orient and has inspired numerous artists of all disciplines since its creation. The musicians of the ANIMA ŞIRVANI ensemble created an eponymous project from it, interpreting Goethe's divan from their personal, plural and rich context and background.

Duduk is a very beautiful Armenian instrument - why it's not mentioned that it's Armenian? If you speak about traditional music in Anatolia, Armenian music and influence should not be left out.

In fact, Armenia has no influence on the Anatolian Makams and Duduk is called Mey in Anatolia and Balaban in Azerbaijan. The program West-Eastern Divan includes German baroque music in dialogue with Azerbaijani, Persian and Ottoman art music form - Mugam.

@@animashirvani8962 that's just not true. Armenian culture and music was highly developed in that region before the Genocide happened in Ottoman empire in 1915. Probably, you're not well informed; I recommend you books by German Dr.Tessa Hofmann or Turkish Prof.Taner Akcam. Btw, Duduk has been recognized as Armenian world heritage by UNESCO. It's made on apricot wood.

@@helenispirian As already mentioned, there is not a single note in the program of the West-Eastern Divan that could be associated with Armenia. We, the Ensemble Shirvani, are well informed, and unlike you, our task is to create a dialogue between cultures and not to appropriate the foreign. But that is exactly what you are doing with your statement.

@@animashirvani8962 if you'd like to create dialogue, then you'd recognize the historic facts about the strong Armenian influence and life of early times in Anatolia. As a German artist I'm doing that with Jewish music and love to sing it. So, I'm doing a dialogue with other cultures. Btw, we also have a contemporary Iranian composer in one program.
