They will be virgins fighting each other for none of them have ever claimed to ever stabbed anyone. Or used these very techniques to protect themselves. You on the other hand have fought & posted it.

My favourite part is that trav acknowledges that he actually likes the guys, however it does hurt more when someone you like dumps on you.
I practice Arnis/Escrima but I practice Trav’s knife defence with my son, I think he’s right about less is more when it comes to responding to attacks.
To be honest though, I’d rather see Trav and Funker work together on a few videos (or a full program) than have some drawn out diss battle. Real Martial arts is a brotherhood, not a competition.
It is a brotherhood, AND a competitive/cooperative one. We get better by testing ourselves and our techniques against each other. That is all Trav is proposing, as you saw, he gives props to them and respect, and makes it clear it is the techniques he is arguing against not the individuals.
@@bearpalomo6055 Funker tactical does have some good stuff and I 100% agree that if you have force applied to the wrist where it is bent beck just before PAIN then you can hit that knife holding bent wrist hand and the knife will drop. But I have been actually slashed with a knife and I never even felt the cut and I could have KILLED my attacker if I wanted to. Why didn't I KILL him? Because when I did realize I had been SLASHED with a Knife I tried to KILL him but I could NOT. When I saw his hand move and KICKED my attacker in SOLAR PLEXUS and put him on his ass in fetal position unable to breathe I did NOT even know I was cut. If I knew I was cut I would have STOMPED on his head, neck and made sure he was DEAD. I was actually stepping back when I got SLASHED and KICKED my attacker because I saw his hand move and I thought he was going to SUCKER PUNCH me. When I got back to my car I saw my BLOOD and my first thought was that fucker MUST DIE. So by the time I found my knife cause it was in the back of my van that filled with a lot of crap. Shithead knifer went into his hotel room. I BANGED on his door and he opened the door with his Knife in right hand. I slashed his hand and tried to get into his room. I only could think of KILLING him. I did slash his hand but with my left hand I was holding onto my wound and trying to push open door with my right shoulder and trying to STAB him in the leg and below the ribs. I was lucky that I could not get into his hotel room because I would have KILLED him.
@@johnm249 Did the slash cut into your organs? I have huge lacerations but they go into fat and muscle not into any organs. I know someone that used an AK-47 bayonet on a drug addict and his stomach intestines fell out.

A knife attack is incredibly fast. All the stuff that I learned martial arts deflecting knife techniques only works if the person's completely committed. Most people are going to stab repeatedly. Working as correctional officer, the knife fights happen so quick that you barely have time to react. This guy is right.

I bought Trav's knife defence series. I'm not a martial artist (well, I did a bit as a kid) - but it was just to see how practical it was.
It was great - fully explained. I binged the series, and if you have any interest at all it's 100% worth buying. (I have no connection - I'm not even in the same country!)

I have the knife defense course of Trav but I don't train it, because there es another tecnique, were I trust my life in. But it's the same concept. The one best tecnique and its enough. Best Martial Arts UA-camr. I totally loved your Headmovement and Multiple Attackers DVDs!
It's true here in Philippines there are lot of people who teaches self-defense techniques but have know experience in real knife attack. They really believe in their techniques. I practice aikido before until I was punch in the face by an amateur boxer who has a record only of 1win and 1 lose. Right now I practice BJJ.
Your conclusion on being smashed in the face by a boxer was...take up BJJ.
@@nickbrooks298 in aikido there is no sparring your training partner doesn't resist. Every thing they do is demonstration. In BJJ your sparring partner resist. You will realize the reality of fighting. In conclusion it's hard to use aikido in real life situation especially in knife defense. But I don't hate Aikido maybe it's not just the martial arts that is fitted for me.
@@nickbrooks298 It makes sense as both boxing and BJJ are practical martial arts, whereas aikido is more art than martial. Sounds to me like he learned the right lesson.

I came across Funker Tactical's channel about 7yrs ago and asked if Doug had ever been in a real knife fight, if he'd ever been stabbed or stabbed anyone. I don't remember exactly what they said, but I do remember 2 things, one that they seemed highly offended by the question and two they never even remotely came close to answering my questions
I've always wondered the same with them. I always thought the best knife defense was a gun

@@doccholo905 same, I've been carrying for for almost 15yrs now, but the average person can close a gap of 21 feet in one second. I've got a sub-second draw, but not if were to have to identify the threat too. Who knows just train in everythiing
@@SiavashJaredAndinoBernhard Just buy a NIJ IIIa rated vest that's impact/stab resistant, people have guns too (even in Italy). If you avoid the cheapest shit then it'll be lighweight, easily concealable and fit you nicely, good quality ones shouldn't even be that warm. The only reason he wears mail armour is because he's a history buff.

Perfectly stated Trav! I wish somebody would've had the guts to go against the system (and the masters, tuhans, sifus, senseis, and gurus) in order to find out what actually works and teach JUST that to me 40 years ago when I started in the martial arts. Think of the time that I would've had (not practicing crap) but practicing what really works...imagine how good I would be by now with those few techniques. And side note, think of the money that I would've saved instead of looking for more, searching through the next style or system to get one grain of usable skill. It's there, it just comes with the burden of drills, and kata, and forms, and useless stuff that only works in some dude's mind, and of course on his willing students....WHO HAVE SPENT TIME AND MONEY ON LEARNING HOW TO BE GOOD DUMMIES/PARTNERS/UKES...learning how to feed a punch (or knife thrust) off of their front foot, learning how to keep their arm extended, learning to let go of the weapon, and look good for the master's demonstration. This is how it's been established....I have lived it through several systems....and I'm ashamed to say, from both sides. Let's fix this traditional mess! Thanks Trav.
I spent a couple decades doing a joint locks that have little effectiveness unless you're in law enforcement. PS.. never buy your wife a gun.

@@richardhenry1969 Nope, I'm a Full Instructor in JKD and FMA...and I used to train with "S_____ Dog", one of the first DB "pack" members. What I write now is out of my experience...I'm not dissing anyone, I have respect for both of these groups in general, but I'm going to respond to your call out: Granted, the JKD groups are closer than the rest of "stand up" MA ("we do BJJ too"...I know, I know), but there is now a lot of tradition that is clinging to people, and a curriculum that is getting out of control in most cases. They tend to do what Bruce Lee did technique-wise, but they do not get the point of what he said about "discarding the rest". And while Dog Brothers have dialed this idea of using what works in for their fights, they still spend a lot of time teaching a whole bunch of moves that are never seen at a gathering.
Honestly love these guys. I hope this happens and Joe Rogan makes a cameo.

I worked in corrections for several years. A part of our training was watching security footage of knife\shiv\sharp object attacks and let me say it's scary to see how fast some poor guys intestines can wind up on the floor. Studying martial arts for over 30 yrs I 100% agree with Trav in that there is just a huge amount of unrealistic knife defense (and self defense) out there.

Especially the sound it makes. But I've been places most never go. Mostly because of my stupidity but I came away with very violent knowledge 99% of these wanna be tuff guys. What really cracks me up is everyone selling knife defense most have never been in a real fight that didn't have rules.
But when all is said and done I like fillipino martial arts the best. Nobody teaches anything that is 100% fail safe. It's up to you to make it work.

Very well defended indeed! Too many expletives though. I believe Mr. Trav to be a serious, realistic, and passionate martial artist. I purchased his knife fight training and find it compellingly realistic. I mean, a knife attack is brutally intense; will a common martial art practitioner be able to calmly redirect the strike, and counter without flaw...that has yet to be seen, but I doubt it. Heck, I've been in marital arts of over 20 years, and you could catch me on a bad day...hence why I carry weapons. So in light of practicing wrist drills and knife flows, I choose to use Mr. Trav's avoidance, deliberate movements, redirects, and counter strikes during my daily work outs, therefor killing 2 birds with one knife technique (see what I did there). Go Trav!!!

I trained Kendo in Japan one year while I was stationed in Japan. In one year I learned 4 strikes & two variations of each (eventually) - I spent my first few months learning balance, form, footwork, and I was given one strike. Took me months before I was taught a variation on that strike. After about 4 months I learned my second strike. A solid foundation & perfecting that foundation is essential. Most people want to rush right into learning everything, but without that foundation, you take one step forward & fall back two. I was taught to take one step & perfect that one step before moving on to the next. After I was there about 6 months the master told me I was the only American that lasted in his class longer than 3 months. Once the foundation was build I was taught things quicker, because with a good foundation I was able to understand & implement the techniques quicker & better, but until they were solid we didn’t move on to the next technique.
I’ve been a martial artist my entire life. I grew up in a dojo with my father teaching since I was in diapers so I appreciate this concept of mastering one technique rather than learning 1,000 techniques but mastering none, as this was the same as my father’s approach to training. He was also a police officer & he put into practice what he preached. He learned that a lot of what he was taught when he was rising up through the ranks didn’t actually work on the streets. That’s when he changed his approach. I love my father for not only the skills he taught me, but the valuable lesson of patience as well.
That’s real awesome, thanks for sharing! It really has me thinking about different foundations of learning in my own life.

After watching people try to punch you in the face and give up because you tired them out, I knew you were the real deal. I've seen videos about how to block knife attacks like tacticals and always thought everything you just said in this video, especially the why did they drop the knife (open the hand) part. Well done for calling out BS which might look good in a film, but practically in real life people following those techniques will get stabbed. I am going to watch your take on how to block a knife attack, I'm intrigued.

Good on you, Trav: very noble of you to arrange this challenge, but don't give anyone an open invitation for a free shot at 10Gs. I'd say limit the conditions to just 100 knife attacks and put up 100 to 1 odds that the Funker Tactical crew can't put you in that textbook Russian Tie submission move. If they're confident in their ability to do so, then make them first put their money where their mouth is challenging them to front $100 to win your $10,000. Then Robin Hood that Benjamin and donate it to a worthy cause. By the way, your knife defense series is awesome.
