Building the Meng King Tiger Part 1

- A very thorough video build of the Meng King Tiger - part 1 is the lower hull. I think this is a fantastic kit, the fit of some of the parts is amazing, but there's a problem with the suspension so it's not all good!
I've never done a video series involving the build before so this might be too long, too wordy, too in-depth. I don't know! Help me out by giving feedback and I can take it on board for part 2.
Thanks for watching! Search Facebook @Scalemodelmedic - Навчання та стиль
As a beginner I love any and all of the seemingly obvious detail you provide. Things that are second nature to an experienced modeler mean a lot to a beginner. For me this is a great video because you get into the minor details that others just cut away to next scene. I hate when the video is going along, then cut scene and everything is done and perfect. You have mastered the art of letting us know what you are doing even if its not on video, it is explained.
Just ordered this kit as my first Meng kit after not being able to find a Whippet in stock, im loving this video pal im a beginner and have found this so so helpful, you even influenced me to buy the sanding tools. Loved the tricks on painting the wheels.
I like this method step by step. I see it like reading an short article or taking lesson from a profi/teacher. And btw your voice color is nice which is very pleasing.
I"m a RR modeler and build a very few armor/aircraft models. I've found that I can learn a lot from armor builders and you are definitely one of the best. I think you presentations are spot-on.
Even as an advanced modeller, it is good to go back to basics, there are things I do wrong dispite being in the hobby for years.
I think you're doing a great job on explanation for all level of modelers. Thank You!
I have been thinking of building a tank kit but did not know which one, but after watching your excellent video I ordered this kit today.
I can't wait for it to arrive. I dare say I will keep coming back to the video as it is my first tank build. Thanks so much.
Good luck with your build and thanks for the compliments, check my facebook page and if you have any questions you can just message me and I'll help you out as best I can 👍
Welcome back! aircraft modeler here, awesome video! Im always learning,,, looking forward to more videos and have enjoyed your previous works! thank you!!
Jon, I always enjoy your videos they are nothing short of inspiring. Your approach helps both new starters into the hobby along with intermediate level builders too.
A nicely paced and well produced video tutorial. Good to see you back doing your stuff and looking forward to part 2 👍
Excellent video! Lovely kit! Having spilled that apparently large square bottle of Tamiya cement too many times to admit, I epoxied one to a 3" square piece of thin sheet metal. Spill-proof now. When it runs low, I refill from another bottle. Cheers!
All good. The Meng King Tiger is great. I now know what to expect with your detail explaination.
I would say jon that so far you've made this stage very informative about the build process of this kit & i look forward to the second part of this build.
Stuart's Scale models. thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. glad you enjoyed the video
Good to see you back making videos, right level of detail so far , keep it up!
It's the guy from the Humbrol vids (love those)! Great work with this (filming and narration)and really excellent way of explaining the process. I also like the way you give basic tips. Returning to the hobby myself after many years and looking forward to trying some of these more advanced processes with some kits! Keep up the great work and thanks!
Also the level/amount of info your are giving seems just about right.
Hi buddy you are doing a grand job on the tiger keep it up mate
Just finished buildin this kit, now painting. Everything is very good on this kit. i ran into no major fit issues. The turret roof was a VERY tight fit. I will post a pic of the painting on your fb page.
My man sounds like the Bob Ross of scale-modeling.
And I'm here for it.
excellent video for new and old looking forward to part 2
loving the vid. can`t wait for part 2
A great video mate just enough content for all i think. look forward to the rest
Great idea on shadows for the wheels! I'll have to give it a try.
Great presentation! Thanks! Doing fine, keeping going.
I am very much enjoying this build up. The direction in which you teach as you go along is well received. Keep going in this direction. Whether you are a beginner or advanced modeller you can take something away from this video. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for sharing! :)
Great video dude. I'm relatively new to modelling and took away a lot of tips and techniques from this video. Keep it up! Can't wait for next video.
Excellent video sir. I’ve just bought this kit from The Tank Museum at Bovington yesterday.
Loved that. Exactly what I was looking for with regards the level I'm at. Don't change a thing.
Brent English thanks, really appreciate your feedback. hope part 2 hits the spot when it's done
Excellent job!!
Great video, I've been thinking about getting this one.
Hi, I don't think there is a problem catering for new modellers. As long as you don't go into a huge amount of detail. The more experienced modeller will totally understand why your doing it. I think you have a good balance of explanation and building. I wouldn't really change anything. I'm enjoying the build and looking forward to the next episode.
Central Industrial Art Modelling thanks that's great to hear
ScaleModelMedic Question, how did you get your logo into your cutting mat! Is it a custom job!
Nivek White The Takom kit is nice though. I'm currently working on it now and will get the Meng kit when the interior launches.
Good choice on the flat black for the road wheels Jon. I think if you had left them bare and gone with the “faux red oxide” there might have been a slight gloss look to un-painted parts. Looking forward to the painting and weathering.
I am new to military modeling and I thought you were giving a lot of guidance that I found useful. I would like to tackle this kit as it is a good looking model at a most attractive price. I am not sure I would have spotted the suspension problem myself, so I am very keen to see your solution. Very enjoyable first part.
My Meng King Tiger is due to arrive this week and I'll be watching all the build series video. It will keep me busy as at the end of 2020 you already have made 7 videos. See you after video #7. This part is already great!
Enjoyed video as I am building the same one at the moment. very helpful
We all have to start some where, I been modeler for 50 years and until now have never built a tank. No one knows it all, there is always a different spin on items build. That is what makes this hobby fun. So I say, state the obvious, beginners are not aware of these things. i.e wheels out of alignment and the corrective action required.
WE WERE ALL BEGINNERS AT ONE TIME.
Wow john, awsome, I wasn't sure about this kit but after watching your vid and thoroughly enjoying it I've changed my mind, I'm a king tiger fan but was honestly going for the takin kits when it's time to do one but I've heard not great things from gav from emodels that curtain things don't fit on the takom kits but I'm thinking of waiting for the interior to be released and go for that. Well done john, hope family is well, brill job.
I agree with all that Brent said don't change the way you doing this build.
Excellent guide. I just got this kit 2 days ago and I'm looking to get some extra info on how to build it. This will be my SECOND model in my life. ALL the help would be welcomed, thank you.
Great job !!!!!!!!!
Well done I replay enjoyed your video
Very well done build video. Wouldn't change a thing. Looking forward to seeing how you addressed the issue with the suspension arms. As basic as the Tamiya King Tiger kits are, I've never had a problem with their suspension. It's a shame you're having this issue. The kit builds up nicely otherwise.
I am loving this kit I want to get it finished soon the fit is awesome and love the quality
You should try the new tamyia extra thin quick setting it's superb stuff
You can spray the Roadwheels on the sprue, and then cut the wheels from the sprue and glue them together and finish them up after, then so you will save time while you do 2 wheels at the same time
I'm only halfway through this video but I'm enjoying it very much. Out of interest, may I ask what psi you use when applying the UMP primer, please? Looking forward to seeing the rest of this vid and when pt 2 is ready. 👍🏻
Good way you do it
Great video and a perfect level to pitch at. I was very surprised to see the issue with the suspension on one side of this tank, everything else fits so well and then one side seems to droop???? It is obvious that you have done nothing wrong as everything else lines up and fits so well. Best of luck sorting it out and I look forward to seeing your next video.
Have fun,
Joe
Joe's Model Kits it's both sides mate but I only showed the one up close. I put a pic on my page showing it on both sides a bit clearer
That is a real shame. I suppose your idea of gluing it up with a heavy weight on top might bring it back in line, but it just seems so strange that on a kit with such fantastic fitting parts, that the suspension would be like this???? I really hope that you get a fix for it that works.
Great build there, made one for a friend but I was so impressed with the kit that I am going to do one for myself. But my question is this, what type of cutting mat do you have there and where can you get one. The colour is excellent and no real distracting lines ‘ patterns etc making it much easier on the eye, keep up the great video’s.
Great attention to detail, and great video keep it up.....those swing arms you can see are not 90 degrees when layer flat on the mat, did you try mailing Meng themselves for a comment , are some off 90 degrees on purpose to simulate battleground usage ?
Instead of using masking tape to secure the deck, you might consider a wooden dowel pulled tight with a rubber band from underneath. Much safer when you have prepainted the surface.
Cheers for the video, I've just ordered one of these. In respect of the wheels towing in, could you dry fit parts C3 and C4 with the wheels, and shim the tops of those parts to alter the angle of the swing arms?
Nice video ! Like)
Hi. Nice work on King Tiger. I have the same kit and check one suspension arm with a road wheel and is straight. I don't fit all arms and wheels yet but i think is ok. The only other problem with a suspension that i could think is to put the arms with a ring in 2-4-6-8 position in the place of 1-3-5-7-9 in the Meng instructions. This part with ring on suspension arm in Meng instructions is tricky.
F.T Models the issue is with parts c4 and the opposite one. the pieces that fit in the lower hull. mengs suspension kit will fix this as you don't use these parts with the suspension kit
The "B" sprues look exactly like the ones in the Zvezda kit or do i remember it false?
I've just bought this kit, I have to say I cannot wait for it to arrive at my doorstep, along with the Star Decals which I purchased from Hannants. It should sit quite well with my Meng Male Mk V and Whippet Tanks as they were very nice to work on. I think this kit might be the best in quality I've seen ever and which will go with my display.
As I've started watching this series, do you think it is worth me getting the Metal Gun which modelers can get separately when in comparison to the gun which comes with the kit?
Hi is the problem with the internal piece glued inside the hull, I'm just about to start building this kit. Just about to watch part 2.
When to expect part 2? Also an idea: you should make time stamps for various steps for the build in the description. It's not that hard to search for a particular segment of the video, but it would sure come handy.
Gergő Kiss I'm filming part 2 now. it's going to be another long video so it'll probably be a couple of weeks
Thank you, I'm eagerly waiting for it with many of us I presume. Being a beginner modeler I'd say the more detailed steps the better.
great video and not to long, it takes time to tell in a good way, how it goes and so on. the suspension problem, is there and right and a left option ?, maybe that could help you, i don't know because i never build an Meng kit.
kim Andersen I don't think so I'm. pretty sure I double checked that plus both sides camber in the same...worth another look though thanks for the feedback
no problem my friend,
just a thought. have fun with the build it looks awesome so far.
Hi, Was thinking the swing arms could be the problem the way they fit the lower hall and the wheels! Maybe some looseness making it sag anything is possible nice video thanks for sharing some good advice.
David Rusterholz it's parts c3 and c4 which went into the lower hull. part 2 sees me cutting these out thanks to a suggestion from the schwerpunkt Facebook group
Tom Hanks has a very distinctive voice. 0:01
Hi SMM,
Without sound smart, have you tried putting the suspension arms on the opposite sides? Apart from your fit problem you have produced a great video, happy modelling.
Les
Les Thiele no worried about sounding smart lol. the issue is the pegs in the locating holes so the arms are no better on either side. a guy called joachim on schwerpunkt has found that cutting the locating parts out cures the issue. it just makes getting height lined up a bit more tricky
Hi SMM,
lets hope that MENG will be able to fix the issue, I would have thought that had done a test build and would have found the issue there and then, I look forward to your next installment.
Les
you can do that, or...you can leave the long arm(pegs in the locating holes) inside the hull slightly loose and then add the suspension arms, lining it up as you go. a friend of mine did that and the wheels lined up fine.
You forgot the periscope dude!!
Heybat lol nah chill its not glued shut yet they will go in beginning of pt2
I would say Humbrol plastic cement better than ak interactive glue
I used humbrol liquid poly for many years, it's a really good glue nothing wrong with it at all
first
No zimmerit and I'm not inferit, see what I did there?
You cannot film too much
My opinion on this kit , Big Deal its just another kit without a metal barrel or the zimmerit , waste of time Meng , why do this model ? what just to be up with the other Makers who have produced it , its not like it is anything special ...
Great presentation! Thanks! Doing fine, keeping going.
