Used to see a lot of Nivas out in the Brazilian countryside (swapped with Toyota Diesels often enough since they were easier to get parts for and stronger) ... one road that now takes about an hour to traverse took about 8 hours about 20 years back. I've seen ruts 3-4 feet deep where the rain has washed out dirt roads and pot holes big enough to fit a VW beetle in.
My aunt has one for at least 20 years now. She's around 70 years old, unmarried no kids, has 6-7 small dogs and rides the Niva everyday, around Athens! Priceless image!
Offroad, it is, it's low powered, but it's light in weight! My 1988 is working fine after stored not running for 7 years! No oil change, no nothing done to it, exept for an new battery!
I hope not, I was thinking of getting a niva but I dont want it jamming up from a little bit mud like an AK47. No I am not sarcastic, its an urban myth that AK's can fire through anything, a little bit of mud will jam them. Big tolerances mean alot of junk can get in there (no it doesn't all fly out when you shoot)
Some are some aren't let's just say that, in USSR times, yes, especially the VAZ 2101, 2103, 2105, 2106, 2107, and 2121, but the sh**ty new Lada's (AvtoVAZes) are being produced by Renault and Dacia.
my work is to go to remote places in greece and i am using it for many years now you can fix it with a handful of tools it is the most rugged and really fun off road car i have ever driven and believe me it WILL get you wherever you want to go!!!
So, what you are saying is I got to suck up to whatever shit is produced in Russia ONLY because I am Russian and got to be a patriot? Sorry, not me....
Денис Успешный At first, I stil have Niva and like it. Mine is a very old one that was made in far 1985. So this model is not a piece of shit or smth like this. But I wish they upgraded the car. Second, it's better to be a patriot than a hater. That's it :)
Thats the point of the Russian culture....sugarcoating things.... don't do it. if its shit - its shit ...take it for what this is. Thats all. Theres no hate. I think its a crime to NOT update the car. What if Land Rover never updated their "legendary" model....but they did and they are great.
+106342533006378252445 That's your opinion. But Lada Niva is classic Off-road car with the best suspension. Of course, the motor is not too strong, 1.7, but it's too OK for this Lada.
+Ismail Alili Jeep Wrangler can't be best offroad car. With each generation it gets heavier and heavier. Heavy short wheelbase offroad isn't really good idea, bit of mud and easily you'll end up with 0 wheels on solid gravel, no trackion and sinking. Also, you can no longer fix anything on Wrangler by yourself in the woods. What makes Niva still great is that it did remain dead simple vehicle.
+El Shuwix Only an idiot isn't able to track or fix a Jeep Wrangler out in the woods. I've owned 5 of them all being different generations. I've broken a few things (not a lot all because of my screw ups rock climbing them) and I have fixed them all. With that said it is getting more and more useless features but the 2 door at least with a manual still remains simple. I've owned a Niva as well and it's good. I have had no problems with it relatively but it doesn't seem any simpler than most of my Wranglers. It's definitely simple but so is the Jeep. They come in a wide range from simple to plush. I hate the plush ones to be honest.
Konformation07 Please sum up vital parts you can fix by yourself in the woods on new Wrangler. You had 5 generations of Wrangler out of 3. WOW. RobinLikeABoss, definitely, for my 1st car when I move to the European Union w/in the next few years from the USA (The USA is incredibly corrupt, corporatist & is going to shit), the Lada Niva will be on the top of my shopping list. The Lada Niva has been in production since 1976/1977 w/little changes, except for in appearance. Just like you, I'd like a Lada Niva from the 1980s; I like the older Lada Nivas better than the newer 1's b/c I think they look better in terms of design of the back lights & interior.
Cody Crouse My restauration for it have been stalled due to no money :( but it would be picked up when I have work again :D, and a tip for moving to Europe, DONT MOVE TO THE NETHERLANDS (where I live!) stupid fuel economy taks\ the newer niva's cost due to that tax, like more as a 100K!!!
RobinLikeABoss, really? A Dutch person saying that I shouldn't move to the Netherlands. R U kidding me? The Netherlands is 1 of the best countries in terms of civil liberties, human rights, happiness, education, democracy, internet, healthcare, marketplace regulations, environmental protection, food, etc. Look up the statistics for these things & you'll find that the Netherlands is among the top 10 in these things while the USA is far behind in most of these categories.
The Lada Niva has been in production since 1977 w/little changes done to it. I agree, I were shopping for my 1st car, I'd probably get a Lada Niva from the 1980s.
Cody Crouse id suggest you dont get one unless you know your way around a car though, mechanically that is. its gonna be expensive when the 4th gear stops to work unless you know how to fix it yourself ;)
people around the world always get big offroad vehicles but this proved that smaller or lighter is better.ive heard that spare parts are not to expensive. somebody could put more agressive tyres on this thing and then buy a lift kit and then go anywere
And it's a car that costs new like 5 new Iphones (at least in Russia). And if you burn your gearbox clutch from too much towing or offroading, the new one will cost 40$. It's great for offroad because you're not afraid of beating it and breaking any part of it :)
indeed NIva is one of the best off road cars, maybe even the best, i have tested this car up in the mountains, in the roads you you cannot even call them roads. it's nos so much comfortable and luxury, but it drives everywhere
Greetings from the United States. I've been researching the Lada Niva for quite sometime and wish it would be imported here to the states! Never got more fun on an other car, i love the Lada Niva, got mine in 2016 and it still makes fun, on and offroad and the community of Lada-Fans here in Germany and the rest of the world is awesome.
This probably was the best car that came out of the Soviets. Engineering principles were actually quite good for a capable non-luxurious off-road vehicle. Suspension had springs and shock absorbers and it had disc brakes. Later models had fuel injection. It was let down by a horrible build quality and very poor rust protection.
That is not correct. Rust protection is not poor. It is non existant. :-D I am researching buying a Niva, actually. From all I can gather, build quality seems to be abysmally bad, and you read from a lot of people buying bran dnew ones and doing lots of trips to their mechanic to get the car fixed (once again).
Off course! I've owned one. Probably one of the BEST cars I've ever owned! Oh, I so long for it now! It wasn't the fastest, but it took me wherever I wanted to go. Road or no road.
И в итоге просрал все полимеры, не создав ничего более современного. Шеви-нива - это уже совершенно другая машина, которая должна была появиться ещё в середине 80-ых
2:58 I had the same reaction when I read my microwave manual in US, which stated not to dry a cat in the microwave :) Niva is an amazing car for its purpose. Many eastern European private hill houses were build with materials, that were hauled up the hill using a Lada Niva. Mud and snow did not stop this car. Another amazing car, that could ascend snowy roads without any problems was the Citroën CV4.
My brother owned one - built like a tank, indestructible, and could literally go anywhere. NOTHING could compete off road. He also used it very heavily to launch boats directly from the beach or from ramps. Easily outperformed much larger "4x4's".
ring your local GM dealer they should be able to hook you up with one ! The have a deal going with one of their SUV models Made in Russia sold in USA !
Buy a Lada Niva Urban. And do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a 5-door model. It may look cool but its off-road capabilities are worse than 3-door's. But you really should look for a UAZ, It can be eben better than this and the interior wouldn't be like from the 90's
richardwadd, If I knew how to drive & went car shopping, I'd either get a Volvo, Saab, Lada, Zaporozhets, Moskvich or IZH, GAZ Volga, or UAZ because they're high quality & the used versions, especially the Ladas, Zaporozhetses, Moskviches or IZHes, GAZ Volgas & UAZes are inexpensive, easy to fix & still last a long time just like Volvos & Saabs.
Actually i was talking to a student who studied in Russia n he told me these are go anywhere cars, he said he saw many other top brand offroaders like BMW Mitsubishi even a Jeep getting stuck yet the Niva made it all look so easy he also added Russians will try what looks crazy n impossible to us n have a good laugh after whatever happens
One thing i like about Russian cars is they make the same thing for years and years. So parts are very easy to get. And non of this moden hard to work on crap. And they sold this car hear in australia at one point. And the samara. I think but am not 100% sure peter brock turned the samara????
Tim Ford Falcon XF only issue is you won’t pass a rego check in one still used to love getting these things in a work not that they were huge money makers but because they were great to work on
All major body parts are stamped from sheet mild steel. Outside the main panels are made of steel with a thickness of 0.7 mm, the front floor and roof panel - 0.9 mm, mud flaps, front wings, rear wheel arches, longitudinal and cross-gender - 1.00 mm; heavily loaded parts - 1.5 mm (front side members, the central rack, etc.). Various small body parts (amplifiers, connectors, brackets, tie-back), stamped from steel with thickness 0.8-2.5 mm.
Safety and comfort are main reasons why it's not. It is a 1976 car and it had a single update in 1993 which was about EFI instead of carb and restyled tail lights. No airbags and automatic transmission. Anyway it was an epic car for it's time and it was a beginning of absolute new class of car-based unibody SUVs ruling the market today. Nobody considered off-road vehicle as a daily ride before Niva. It showed a direction to other makers.
I adore this car!!! Classic, simple made, amazing off roads skills, cheap spear parts and tough as fuck!!! I own a Daihatsu Terios and the car of my dreams is Lada Niva.... This car will never let you down..... Respect to the Russian beast!
hell yeah!we have a saying here in Croatia Kud koza tud i Lada!/where goat can go,lada can also!and that is a true....the Niva is best off road car ever!
Just finished a 1200 mile trip with a 2012 Niva. Of those only about 800 over paved highway, and the best of the rest were at best twice worse than shown on this video. It is still alive.
Ladas and other east block cars of the 80's have become quite collectable as many have gone back to east Europe and Russia, so get one while you still can
It's kinda awesome It's simple, It means, no computersystems, but it proves that you don't need 2000 computers to get you from A-B New cars are nice, but they'd take away the... thing you'd get from driving... That something, is the something new cars just a missing
Somewhere you mention that the Niva has "difflocks".Unless this is a new, feature, the vehicle has a centre differential which makes it a permanent 4wd car but, not axle differentials. Used to own one in 2003-2004
@Desmonddd2002 I would say that lada should be tougher. Because it's unbelievably simple. It's just wheels, seats and a steel cabin. And all the engineering (even there isn't much of it) is very tough and very simple. In short, lada (and other Russian vehicles of such type) just have so little places to go wrong. But even if it breaks down you can still finish your journey :D
All independent suspension like an early Range Rover but half the weight made it a brilliant off road car. I always thought Lada should have partnered with a Western auto specialist to handle the superficial stuff (cabin refinements, emissions, marketing, etc, etc) because the car was a potential world beater. It's still a really nice niche vehicle.
A 2004, one of the infamous 'whites', which stayed stored in the port for 2 years. This means a little malested electric contacts and some premature brown stains in colour. Nothing very unussual, but runs perfect in its 98370 km. This mileage costed a gearbox (500e), 2 sets of discs and one drums, a clutch and an ac compressor, this last was no bad because i mounted one out of a renault safrane which makes it a fridge...
Well, I think Jeep Rangler is pretty compatible. It might be a bit worse it terms of ride smoothness and mud handling but it is also more reliable, much stronger and it has roomier interior as well.
I've owned 2 Lada Nivas. 1.7 and 1.7i (fuel injected) with NO power steering. :))) An excellent car. It brakes down now and then, but it's cheap to repair. EXTREMELY cheap! Don't have any doubts to buy a Lada Niva if u need a brand new cheap SUV. It won't get stuck and with LPG is cheap to drive. Real fuel consumption: 14 liters per 100km city drive, 8 liters per 100km (100km/h - 65 mph highway). Expect 15 l LPG CITY (OR) and 9l LPG (HWY)
While it is mentioned that the original Lada was allegedly powered by a unique engine, is it known whether the original Lada used a similar engine to the Fiat 1100 (Type 103) and Fiat 1300/1500 that preceded both the Fiat 124 Series and Twin-Cam engines?
I want one, but it would have to be older than 25 years from today and would probably cost quite a lot to import to my country (USA). I love cars that are designed to be useful more than pretty. I don't care how a car looks or how many gadgets it has. I want it to be a damn car. An off-roading 4x4 car that can handle pretty much anything I will encounter is a car I want. Throw a winch on it and get a snow plow for it and maybe a tow hitch for light towing and a bunch of off-roading lights and it will be set.
Such Niva was officialy converted to a 1.9L 64hp Peugeot diesel engine from the importer in France...but the conversion was expansive... From the cost i read, it's in France (cost from 1 liter LPG= 0.80 to 0.92€/liter)
Not everyone demands to drive a safety cushion on wheels. Let people decide whether they want safety above all else. These are great cars for the purpose.
I'd like to notice that those "awful roads" are not even close to what Niva was made to successfully wade through.
Funnily enough England and sub zero Russia don't have much in common... Green lanes are for tractors so the terrain is never going to be awful
Dimastiy585 exactly, it was made to wade through snow of many feet deep.
Can Lada to this ua-cam.com/video/pfy9a_gVVAM/v-deo.html LOL

Ardie Reitsma try and find a true Russian made AK not the Chinese, Romanian etc bullshit. AK is proven in wars not in videos
Just the fact that the Niva has been produced for so long with very minor changes is probably the best proof that it is one thing: Perfect.
In case of Niva those rules obviously say "You are wrong, fatburger"
Someone is not aware that Communist party is not the ruling party in Russia for 27 years...

I think it gets easier to import a vehicle if it's over 25 years old. If you could find one made before 1990, it shouldn't be too much trouble.
Dan McCarthy
Interesting to know that, I have to do more research to find out! Thanks for the advice!

I've owned an '81 and a '96 Niva and I can attest to their rugged off-road abilities, but you could almost watch them rust right before your eyes.
at least it is more easy to get spare panels, as they have been unchanged for so long
Off course! I've owned one. Probably one of the BEST cars I've ever owned! Oh, I so long for it now! It wasn't the fastest, but it took me wherever I wanted to go. Road or no road.

2:58 I had the same reaction when I read my microwave manual in US, which stated not to dry a cat in the microwave :)
Niva is an amazing car for its purpose.
I want one in USA!!!
Reminds me of how rugged old Isuzu trucks and SUV were
ring your local GM dealer they should be able to hook you up with one ! The have a deal going with one of their SUV models Made in Russia sold in USA !
Canada imports Niva
how how how

This is nothing to Niva, it's been tested in Siberia. When you started, I saw Niva smiling to the "rough" terrain. :)
the radio hole is for a HAM radio if you so choose to put one in for long distance communication.
It's standard (ISO 7736) single DIN
I also have Niva and it is just awsome :)
It beat a land rover discovery. Well I'm getting one of these babies.
Buy a Lada Niva Urban. And do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a 5-door model. It may look cool but its off-road capabilities are worse than 3-door's.
But you really should look for a UAZ, It can be eben better than this and the interior wouldn't be like from the 90's
UAZ Patriot is great too.
What uaz
@@one_step_sideways why are you so against the 5door model? It will naturally be somewhat more heavy sure but why are you putting it down
@@konstantinosstag6436 I stated why in the comment.
In Russia they say: a Niva is like wine...Gets better with time.
They also say: Just if all women were like Niva, the man would be happy.
I love this car! Absolute headturner as well. Starts without a problem even at minus -20 C.
made to survive
I have one and love it to bits!
YEAH!
Me 2
richardwadd, If I knew how to drive & went car shopping, I'd either get a Volvo, Saab, Lada, Zaporozhets, Moskvich or IZH, GAZ Volga, or UAZ because they're high quality & the used versions, especially the Ladas, Zaporozhetses, Moskviches or IZHes, GAZ Volgas & UAZes are inexpensive, easy to fix & still last a long time just like Volvos & Saabs.
Well you know what they say, you can't change perfection.
One thing i like about Russian cars is they make the same thing for years and years. So parts are very easy to get. And non of this moden hard to work on crap.
And they sold this car hear in australia at one point. And the samara. I think but am not 100% sure peter brock turned the samara????
and over the years the same thing gets gradually worse))
"...the only optional extra is a snowplough."
Wow, diff locks on an inexpensive 4WD! I want one!
Finally An Honest review well Done and You had Fun !!!
like a little tank
I'm not sure if it's true but I heard the Lada Niva can run on any liquid that's flammable
hell yeah!we have a saying here in Croatia Kud koza tud i Lada!/where goat can go,lada can also!and that is a true....the Niva is best off road car ever!
Wow, I am from Ukraine and we'd say kudy koza, tudy i lada) So similar words. Greetings to Croatia.
Pozz rodjo ja sam prezimenjak iz Cg .
Just finished a 1200 mile trip with a 2012 Niva. Of those only about 800 over paved highway, and the best of the rest were at best twice worse than shown on this video. It is still alive.
he didn't drown this one
Ladas and other east block cars of the 80's have become quite collectable as many have gone back to east Europe and Russia, so get one while you still can
Awesome suv greetings from the ancient megalithic city of TIAHUANAKU BOLIVIA 🇧🇴
I have a S3, but i learned to drive in a cousin's 1991 Niva and i am definetly buying one
It's kinda awesome
It's simple, It means, no computersystems, but it proves that you don't need 2000 computers to get you from A-B
New cars are nice, but they'd take away the... thing you'd get from driving...
That something, is the something new cars just a missing
Somewhere you mention that the Niva has "difflocks".Unless this is a new, feature, the vehicle has a centre differential which makes it a permanent 4wd car but, not axle differentials. Used to own one in 2003-2004
They have brought it back again
A mate of mine had an old one of these and he said it could go just about anywhere
Top Gear made a video about Lada but this one is more realistic...
What's the name of the tune that begins at 4:37
Can't you get a right hand drive version..? I love these cars.!.!
There is (was) "Top Gear" and then somebody creates a me-too called "Fifth Gear" - isn't that just pure genius?
Show me another car from that year below £100k that’s still worth its full purchase price!
Fifth Gear is for car drivers. Top Gear is for car-based entertainment. Both are good, and I enjoy watching both!
It was the Krauts who stitched up Lada ironically over emissions lol!
I had driven both of these cars... they are not the same league. Niva is unbeatable off road!!! Ligth, short, narrow tires... Niva rules :))

This mileage costed a gearbox (500e), 2 sets of discs and one drums, a clutch and an ac compressor, this last was no bad because i mounted one out of a renault safrane which makes it a fridge...
this is a smashing soviet 4x4
Well, I think Jeep Rangler is pretty compatible. It might be a bit worse it terms of ride smoothness and mud handling but it is also more reliable, much stronger and it has roomier interior as well.
great and amasing tour...
If they sold these in here in States for under $8k I would pick one up asap
In Russia the basic variant is like 6,5k USD i belive.
unfortunately, no western countries wanted soviets invading their car markets)
New standart one costs around $5k,luxury" model a bit more in Russia.
Simplicity!!! simple word, on a simple car. very useful and reliable machine to drive the people from point A to point B...
Easily one of the best off-roaders. For the money, it's an unbeatable off-roader.
great off road with lada niva
It suprised me a lot!
south cartolina has lots of dirt roads. great fun to drive. wrx is wonderful in dirt roads
Very nice, really! Thanks for posting.
Nice tribute video. Niva is probably the best car ever created by AvtoVAZ!
I've owned 2 Lada Nivas. 1.7 and 1.7i (fuel injected) with NO power steering. :)))
An excellent car.
The world's first crossover Niva 1977
Yes it is but i don't know about the "permission" of the factory (i mean it's diesel or benzin engine) but it's cheaper as you say ;)
in america lpg cost same as petrol and is about 15-20 percent less efficent.
The more I look at this car the more it reminds me of a 1985 Panda 4x4
These guys saying the Niva is rubbish most probably never had one. You either love the Niva or hate it, me, I won't swop my Niva for anything.
the niva is the opposite off all those silly SUV's,like the x5. It may not be luxurious but at least it's actually a good offroader.
best suv ever. A proper 4x4 as well.
Niva is the best .... but the old 1.6l with carburetor - you can literally fix it anywhere in the fields or mountains with hammer.
+El Shuwix That's a good point. I was thinking of going to Lima, Peru to get one.
Just as well really because it WILL break down. I’ll keep my Hilux thanks.
I am sure we will see in next 5 years new model!! But first, they must do all experiments they can on this baby.
How much does Niva cost in UK please? And compare to price of Suzuki Vitara?
Not everyone demands to drive a safety cushion on wheels. Let people decide whether they want safety above all else. These are great cars for the purpose.
Lada goes where no other pickup will not go
LOVE LADA NIVA
This is not the only luxury car field!
is importing them from mexico or canada too bothersome? (if they have it)
