There is a quick fix. unscrew the back of the cable that is stuck. Pull out the 3 prong connection. This leaves the case. use channel locks to turn the case and it will release.

Thanks, this was helpful in showing the mechanism. Unfortunately, my xlr is still stuck (in this case, in a camcorder).
