Oh I hadn't heard this in decades! Takes me back to my youth. I never really listened to the lyrics then. It's a fine anti-war song. I presume the narrator is a young soldier, mortally wounded.
@@berniarmstrong I always thought he was dying of something like cancer. He's surrounded by his loved ones, and saying goodbye to them. If it were combat, wouldn't he be dying on the battlefield, far from his childhood friend, father, and wife / partner? Also, he's dying surrounded by birds singing and spring in the air. He wants to be outside enjoying it all, but instead he's confined to bed, for the last time.

Thanks, Chris! I knew all the lyrics from back when it was a hit on the radio when I was a kid. Yes there are three key changes in the choruses, but it returns to the original key in the verse each time. The whole song still lives rent free in my head, key changes and all.
