A worldwide hit I reckon, such sad subject matter though. This is really good Wendy, sweet picking, thanks for bringing another one.

Thanks, Graham! I thought a sad song about many years of Seasons coming to an end seemed like an apropos choice for this week.

I attempted the original French version of this a while ago ... and the lyrics are completely different in the feeling that they convey. Very nice, Wendy!

Thanks, Val! Yes, it’s a very different song, the Jacques Brel version. Much darker and angrier.

Good one Wendy. This song was a massive hit in the UK, I think that was the same across the globe. You are clearly enjoying a song about a man on his deathbed saying goodbye to everyone close to him 😂

Thanks, John! Yeah, it was a huge hit in the US too. It made me cry back then, and then later on, like a lot of people, I decided it was pretty goofy. But then when I recorded it, it made me cry again!

Oh I hadn't heard this in decades! Takes me back to my youth. I never really listened to the lyrics then. It's a fine anti-war song.
I presume the narrator is a young soldier, mortally wounded.

@@berniarmstrong I always thought he was dying of something like cancer. He's surrounded by his loved ones, and saying goodbye to them. If it were combat, wouldn't he be dying on the battlefield, far from his childhood friend, father, and wife / partner? Also, he's dying surrounded by birds singing and spring in the air. He wants to be outside enjoying it all, but instead he's confined to bed, for the last time.

nice pick and great picking! man.. that's a lot of lyrics too and were there key changes? you make this tough one look easy, but you seem to do that often! very nice!

Thanks, Chris! I knew all the lyrics from back when it was a hit on the radio when I was a kid. Yes there are three key changes in the choruses, but it returns to the original key in the verse each time. The whole song still lives rent free in my head, key changes and all.
