How did Pixar Colour Toy Story? 🎨 Behind the Scenes

For being as old as it is… most of the animation holds up surprisingly well

It’s not hugely surprising, since animation is something that had been being done for 100 years or so prior, even in three dimensions (stop motion puppets). The fundamentals and skill set translate very well.
Even today, Pixar doesn’t require new job applicants to have used 3D software. They look for people who demonstrate core principles such understanding weight and form, posing, timing, spacing etc which are independent from the medium.

​@@btn237This was made in the early 90's, cgi wasn't used as frequently as today, and this was the first full cgi movie, there are others like Lawnmower Man, but that was a mixture of live action and cgi (which looks very bad compared to Toy Story)

Honestly the lighting alone definitely has made this movie to age so damn well visually, even if some animations or designs can look a little rough, the mastery of the lighting really makes the movie look brilliantly done, the yellow lighting on daytime looks particularly amazing

Ironically those 3 children's book illustrators Ralph mentioned also worked on the concept art for this film.

So Ralph then directed them on the look considering he was the overseer of the Artworks that was being designed as the Art Director.
