Why do people keep saying this there's a setting in the music app to turn it on and when I'm listening to music it says lostless audio am I misunderstanding something
@@PeteMatheson Because 99% of people won’t drop $400 on a pair of headphones? Most flagship phones are ridiculously powerful, when most people who buy them won’t even use its full power. If you’re making high end, expensive headphones, then you should at least be able to provide features that can be expected at that price.
Funny I’m listening on the Max now and I agree. I hear much brighter sound when the video switches to the Bose. But as I’m listening on Max I shouldn’t… This play back via those microphones don’t make sense at all. I will say I’m addicted to the Max as keep switching back to them from my B&O H95 and B&W 7 and also all my high end earbuds including the AirPods Pro. It’s mad how I get frustrated with the others. I’ve been using Quiet Comfort headphones since 2005. The first time I put a set on, I heard things in my favorite music that I had never heard before. I think I paid almost $300 for them at the time, which was an enormous amount for young me. But it was one of the best purchases I ever made. I literally wore those headphones completely out. Later, I’ve been wondering about getting some really expensive headphones. What am I missing?
I'd say ANC technology has come a long way since the original Bose QCs. Personally I have tried both these headphones featured and I slightly prefer the Apple, but they are very close in specs. For cost purposes only I opted for the Ultras. Prior to that I had the Bose QuietComforts (2023 model - still a very decent pair of headphones) but the Ultras are noticeably superior.

Apple had a more clinical sound, colder. The bose had less detail but were warmer, which is more pleasing to the ear. It's a fine line keeping detail and warmth, because overly cold music is tinny, and has poor decay. Being cold is a form of distortion, like overly warm music, but coldness is less pleasing to the ear. I have hifiman he400i's, and they're GREAT headphones. Comparable to Sennheiser, but warmer and with more base. So a more pleasing sound with the same level of detail as HD600's, maybe more (because the hifiman's drivers have more base, more precise base, and warmer base, but the mids might be better on the HD600's, or maybe they're just more pronounced).
I have both these headphones, and I don't feel like the Bose stand up to the Airpod Max in build quality or sound quality. The sound is just cleaner and the bass sounds better. They pair easier (if you have Iphone). I think the mic is better too. The earpads and everything are just better. Of course, the Airpods cost more, but I don't feel like they are even in the same league.
@@makeev888 The Airpod Max are better. They sound better, they connect better (to an Iphone), and they actually have some metal in the construction, so they feel more substantial. Even the earpads are fabric instead of vinyl, so they also feel more substantial. I thought with the Bose I had about the best headphones I could get without going to corded headphones or spending a ton of money, but the Airpod Max were noticeably better when I got them.
And don't forget that (at least here in Europe) the Bose QuietComfort Ultras are about 200 euro cheaper than the Apple AirPods Max. 395,- vs. 579,- (or 638,- if you want the same 2-year factory warranty).
As someone with a massive head, the biggest draw for me to the Airpods Max is the comfort. I previously owned the Bose NC700 and they would hurt after about 2 hours. It was a pleasant surprise that the Airpods have a better sound. IMO the only area that the Bose comes out on top is the noise cancellation.

In the sound quality test, were you using Noise Cancellation? Transparency Mode? No mode? Another thing to consider, if you were playing back on Airpods vs QuietComfort, I think the rendering Apple uses will be different for Apple's head-tracking engine vs what it provides for the QuietComfort. Also having that not all songs have a Spatial Audio version, which will sound different if the "Auto" settings on Apple Music is enabled. Might give a different mix overall switching between these headphones. Not saying you didn't make sure of these settings and ideas, but would have been awesome if clarified in the video in the Sound Test. Otherwise a phenomenal video.
I hoping for a next generation of AirPods Max. I missed them the first time round and now I use AirPods Pro 2, but I miss having a pair of headphones. My last headphones were the Beats Studio 3.

I left Bose headphones due to build quality which was not discussed here. My last QuietComforts I had to replace the ear pads once per year as the seam would tear. And you have to buy direct replacements from Bose at over $40 as off brands were not the same sound when used. I was paying a $40 tax annually to use those headphones. The ear pads on Apple are just plain more long term planned with their material choice. Sound wise, I think Apple is due a new model in the next year for better tech and USB-C. I’ll still go Apple, but right now I’m not leaving these for Bose Ultra.
Pete thanks for making this video - really appreciate the in depth comparison. I’ve had the Max for ages but getting rid now because the headband is really aging badly. They’re heavy and I just don’t like the shape of them. I have ordered the Bose QC Ultra in the Limited Sandstone… hoping they’ll be my long time over ears as I’m sick of trying so many !
I'm also selling my AirPods Max after 2 years and switching to Bose QC Ultra! Same issue on the headband with 2 pairs (they replaced the first pair due to the sagging headband)
@@jenni4809 they wouldn’t do anything about mine which I think is quite bad (and unlike apple) for a $550 product where the headband didn’t even last 12 months ! And you’re right they are heavy. I got another set of Beats Studio Pros as they work better with my iPhone etc than the Bose, nice to have both options though!
I got APM a week ago. I love them but they hurt my neck 😢 considering taking them back t it there’s no weight decrease being rumoured for the next gen. I have lots of piercings and they are so comfortable for that as they have space to allow my whole ear inside the cup.
I tried the apple headphone on tonight after never seeing them in person ever before. They’re amazing. Like you put them on and they’re so comfortable. No cheap leather on your ears. I listened to some music and the extremely loud store was completely silent. I wish they didn’t cost so much
They are soo uncomfortable for me due to the weight, I've had AirPods Max for 2 years now but I just can't stand them anymore and I'm switching to Bose
I had the QC45 and i had severe software problems with multipoint. They cut out every 2 minutes or so. Bose admitted they had some problems in their chat but still the last update came out in february 2022. bose is definitely not a software company and that shows. I try to steer clear of bose products mow. They have great support though.
Have to say Bose wins for me, throughout all your sound tests the Bose won every time (well, to my ears anyway). Intrigued by the Technics in-ear.... have you a comparison video?
I really wish the Airpods Max didn't sound that much better.. what's the point of lossless audio if it just sounds flat in comparison. I think I'll wait for the new release of the Max before getting anything
My primary complaint with the Bose is when you have them paired two multiple devices. You will get occasional stops in the primary content your listening too when the other device wakes up or gets a notification. I would prefer if there was a way to eliminate these interruptions. Right now I turn disconnect the secondary device.
How does it sound for the person on the line. They often complain to me that the microphone is picking up random background noise and for them, because I don't notice it, it is distracting or even blocks my voice entirely.
You can buy a USB-C dongle for Apt X connectivity and plug it into your iPhone. So while not officially supported. There is a work around. I use it with my Focal Bathys.
Shout out to the best headset comparison ever! You give us the experience of the headset instead like others you only get their reaction of the headset instead of the experience. The new studio is amazing!
Were you connected to a qualcomm compatible device? that COULD effect the sound quality, by effecting the bitrate/codex used. It would be interesting to hear the sound quality compared, between codex's.
Best video on Airpod Max evaluation I've seen so far (and I've watched well over a dozen) -- the studio equipment are slick and sick! So pro in every aspect of production, and thanks for not wasting our time for even a second -- kudos!
If you want the AirPods Max to sound S tier turn off the Dolby Atmos and turn on special audio is a world difference and how the music sounds I recently discovered this after having them for almost a year completely changed the way I hear the music also turn off EQ and turn off sound check trust me anybody who said they don't sound loud enough which I used to say turn off those features And they get crazy loud and have extreme clarity
Yay! Happy to watch this. Six months ago I had to make the hard decision between the Apple and Bose headphones. I went with Bose, but always wondered if I made the right choice. Glad to find out that I made the right choice.
Interesting- thanks for being thorough. Sound quality def the Max. Would be interesting to hear the Sennheiser Momentum 4 in comparison (the ones I use). Codecs can be a bit of a distraction- they can add to perhaps 10% difference in audio quality, with hardware, recording, fit, environment and person’s listening preferences making significantly more difference (I use iOS and android with mix of codecs. Far and away my best sounding earbuds are the Status Between ANC which don’t have aptx or LDAC). Personally, I prefer lightning to usb c for fitting into a device- despite having mostly USB C. However, you can get AirPods Max with USB C. Does seem odd that you can get better audio either Apple Music on android than iOS (unless you use wired where iOS beats android’s native downsampling). I know the argument about impact on battery life, but it would be great to have the ability to use Apple Music to its full on iOS.
Hey I just came across your video, found it very interesting. I have one concern regarding the headphones and that is when i raise the volume up, seems like it leaves the headphones everyone who is around me can hear the music. Is that normal?
I think you should only compare it with a Senheisser or an Audiotechnica, at least these two do not makeup the quality of the reproduced sound like Bose does. IMHO!
Thanks for the quality of the video, but your aim is to bring out the Bose to stand out as far as the Airpods Max is just taking over. Airpods Max are just incredibly great and it's magic. I love all Apple products for their quality, the extreme sense of perfect rendition, and the classy premium aspect of whatever they put out. Airpods Max is a premium and the best headphone on the market right now. The headphone to beat, simply.
Yeah it's difficult even with this whole listen to me thing. Me recording it. Compressing it into a video Uploading to UA-cam which compresses it again You listening on a device via headphones Lol Listening back it does sound thinner via UA-cam, and technically that's true in person. But if you want a fat or rounded sound you can use one of the EQ presets (is why I use the rock preset most of the time) The Bose EQ's ok too but to me just doesn't have the separation the Max's do.
@@PeteMatheson- if the sound recording is compressed twice (just wondering how much more YT compresses it) what's the point of using a binaural microphone... BTW, the Bose sounded much better, fuller to me anyway...
Thank you for mentioning Technics. I have the EAH-az40 as well as the EAH-A800. I have a lot of problems with ear buds creating pressure in my ears, so I use the over ear headphones. They have the best sound I have ever herd. Unlike Bose, witch peopled clame bring out details, the drivers in the Technics are actually capable of doing this. The over all sound of the technics is incredible, and when bass comes in, it literally sounds like a set of professional club monitors.
I do appreciate you letting us be able to listen. I feel if people are going to review cans then they should do it like you and let us listen . It's like someone reviewing and saying how amazing a camera is without showing us pics. So thank you.
Really helpful, more reason for Apple to bring out a Gen 2 AirPods Max with USB-C and try to overtake, I would without hesitation (if I had the money) buy the Bose, they won in every category, imo.
Okay I am watching this video on my iPhone 13 with Apple earphones (wired connection) and I heard wayyy more Bass from the Bose. The Apple max sounded flat. Who’s with me?
No one ever tests mic quality in noisy environments. The reason the AirPods Max mic sounds processed is because it does noise cancelling on the mics as well. Meaning people listening to you won’t hear your background noise. This means that for phone calls the maxes are better. You also seem to neglect things like quick switching which is probably the main reason people opt for apple headphones.
“Quick switching” is not why people buy AirPods. Most AirPods users don’t even use any other devices besides an iPhone. Regardless, most headphones have multipoint now. It won’t switch _as_ fast as AirPods, but it’s a minor inconvenience at worst to open the Bose app and select which device you want to connect to. It’s not like 15 years ago where you’d have to unpair from one device and pair to another device. Get your head out of the iClouds
Thanks for the comprehensive review… I have both - one comment I would like to make is the Apple connectivity with Siri. Working at home using the AirPods I have found them comfortable for hours, but most noticeably is the ‘Siri’ actions I can control the iPhone (take a call easily), Siri the lights on and off etc…. I don’t need to reach for any devices - they just work :) Both terrific headphones.
In the sound quality test, I noticed a pretty big difference compared to the Bose and the air pods max. And this is coming from someone whose hard of hearing
@@PeteMatheson I think people are preferring the warmth of the Bose to the cold detail of the Apple, but imo it would be great to hear the qualcomm enabled audio vs the regular audio, to see if that makes a difference for some people with enabled devices, or if it's a gimmick. Personally, I consider the coldness of the apple to be a form of distortion, and it's better to be warm than cold with consumer audio, which BT audio is.
AirPods could definitely use some more color. Would go with the Bose. Not sure if only me though… But wouldn’t change my XM5 for any of them, and to be honest, for on the go/heavy duty headphones on the same price of the AirPods I would go with M&D MW75.
Conclusion is that they offer same noise cancellation? Seriously? In all the other reviews I saw, Bose is top ranked vs. all other headphones in the market, by far.
I bought max and sell it after two days and bought bose, max are very heavy, when I run it feels kg weight on your head, other side bose are better in everything except mic
Another great video Pete, thank you. Seeing the Technics brand made me think of my 1200 MK II turntables packaged up in storage.. Question for you: How would the Sony MK5 headphones rank in this comparison?
Apple try to be very minimal for such a premium price, I like having a bit of bass with my headphone that's why I opted for the bose ultra and I also get a case for less
I haven’t figured out the battery management of the Bose, they seem to drain when “off”. Is there a way of being able to tell if they are truly off and not in standby?
ALL my last 5 Bose products broke down after 2 and a half years. Bose sleepbuds, Bose Revolve, Bose Revolve +, Bose Soundbar 300. They sound amazing and "look" durable but in reality they are not.

The Bose just seems like a better deal. Especially since they support lossless quality on apple music, crazy that the Max's can't do that.
Not if you have an iPhone

They’re heavy and I just don’t like the shape of them. I have ordered the Bose QC Ultra in the Limited Sandstone… hoping they’ll be my long time over ears as I’m sick of trying so many !
How is QC U with u?
How’re you liking the ultras?
@@mandyy5647 I just purchased the QC ultra in Sandaone & love them. The air pods max has to be at max volume to get better sound.
The Beats Studio Pro offer losless via USB-C, don't they?
Strangely in the sound quality I thought the APM (which I own) sounded less rounded and tinnier!
Bro, what mic are you using? sounds great! such a top notch produced video. great work
I got APM a week ago.
I wish they didn’t cost so much
Sometimes they’re just perfect for shutting out all of life’s noise!
They’re on sale right now 😊
@@denisealley9822 i still cant afford :(
@@denisealley9822Hi where did you see sale? Thanks
They are soo uncomfortable for me due to the weight, I've had AirPods Max for 2 years now but I just can't stand them anymore and I'm switching to Bose
AirPod max are my favorite. Aesthetically they look so much better.
Tried the Ultra today. Liked it sound wise, but its low volume and low bass are a bit disappointed.
Great video! I have both I really prefer the AirPods except they are so heavy for long term usage.
Yes seriously. Always found Apple’s sound signature very harsh, Bose is tolerable
Agreed. I thought the apple sounded muddy
Me, too. I was surprised when he declared Apple the winner for sound quality.
@@moyofilms i was like man homie really is tweaking hard 😂😂
Glad I’m not the only one who thought that.
Is there a video where you compare the audio of the Bose QC Ultra to the Beats Studio Pro?
I really wish the Airpods Max didn't sound that much better.. what's the point of lossless audio if it just sounds flat in comparison. I think I'll wait for the new release of the Max before getting anything
My primary complaint with the Bose is when you have them paired two multiple devices. You will get occasional stops in the primary content your listening too when the other device wakes up or gets a notification. I would prefer if there was a way to eliminate these interruptions. Right now I turn disconnect the secondary device.
Will I be able to experience Bose's full power with Samsung s23? Or should i go with iPhone 15 and Bose?
Awesome comparison review, would love to see how these compare to the Sony XM5s. Thank you for the video!
Did you have “immesion” turned on for the QC ultra’s for the sound quality test?
I just got me the AirPods Max. They are awesome. love them so much
You're so real for playing Linkin Park numb to compare the sound quality
How does it sound for the person on the line. They often complain to me that the microphone is picking up random background noise and for them, because I don't notice it, it is distracting or even blocks my voice entirely.
You can buy a USB-C dongle for Apt X connectivity and plug it into your iPhone. So while not officially supported. There is a work around. I use it with my Focal Bathys.
Quick question which one is louder the Bose or the AirPods?
They're both around the same volume levels, as long as you switch off Apples volume limiter in settings. 👍🏼
Shout out to the best headset comparison ever! You give us the experience of the headset instead like others you only get their reaction of the headset instead of the experience. The new studio is amazing!
Thank you so much! Exactly what I was hoping to deliver with this video 😃
I have not long purchased apple AirPod max & it the best wireless headphones hands down!
Where do I go to do that ?
Sounds like a very Google-able question 🤔
Thanks for the efforts you have put behind making this in depth video.
I've always been a big fan of Bose, but thanks to my AirPods, I can't live without the magic/easy pairing feature anymore.
Not sure if this was mentioned towards the end of the video but these headphones are released 3 years apart? does that not come into account?
You're right, but this is also the most recent release of the Airpods Max. People are still buying them and people want reviews between current items.
Yay! Happy to watch this. Six months ago I had to make the hard decision between the Apple and Bose headphones. I went with Bose, but always wondered if I made the right choice. Glad to find out that I made the right choice.
I wanted to get the aipods max but I think I stick with my amazing BOSE
Amazing thorough review. Big thanks
Very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
great video. where did you buy the tool bench and drawers
agree. great video. I was interested on where he got that tree in the background from
I’m considering upgrading from my Bose QC 45s that I’ve had for over two years to the new Bose ultra headphones
What’s partial audio compare to AirPod max? 🙏
Max are a lot heavier ….which makes it them a tad bit tiring to use …is it ?
I think you should only compare it with a Senheisser or an Audiotechnica, at least these two do not makeup the quality of the reproduced sound like Bose does. IMHO!
Thanks for the quality of the video, but your aim is to bring out the Bose to stand out as far as the Airpods Max is just taking over. Airpods Max are just incredibly great and it's magic. I love all Apple products for their quality, the extreme sense of perfect rendition, and the classy premium aspect of whatever they put out. Airpods Max is a premium and the best headphone on the market right now. The headphone to beat, simply.
Remember you can always tweak your headphones with an equalizer so if your Bose are to bass heave, well then just use Vocal + Treble boost ...
I thought the AirPods Max sound was “thinner” than the Bose. But it could be listening on YT with AirPods Pro.
Yeah it's difficult even with this whole listen to me thing.
Me recording it.
Compressing it into a video
Uploading to UA-cam which compresses it again
You listening on a device via headphones
Lol
Listening back it does sound thinner via UA-cam, and technically that's true in person. But if you want a fat or rounded sound you can use one of the EQ presets (is why I use the rock preset most of the time)
The Bose EQ's ok too but to me just doesn't have the separation the Max's do.
Glad to help!
I do appreciate you letting us be able to listen. I feel if people are going to review cans then they should do it like you and let us listen . It's like someone reviewing and saying how amazing a camera is without showing us pics. So thank you.
The best review on the AP
Max so far. I’m not sure of getting one of those as there are many rumors on the 2nd gen coming out this year.
Wait, is this the new studio 😮
👀 sneaking into a few videos now.... Lol
@@hunterhobbs4374 I’m on the 13 pro max and Bose sounds better to me too
Do a review and compare with new Sonos Ace pls
Got them on order!
Fair play
“Quick switching” is not why people buy AirPods. Most AirPods users don’t even use any other devices besides an iPhone. Regardless, most headphones have multipoint now. It won’t switch _as_ fast as AirPods, but it’s a minor inconvenience at worst to open the Bose app and select which device you want to connect to. It’s not like 15 years ago where you’d have to unpair from one device and pair to another device. Get your head out of the iClouds
Thanks for the comprehensive review…
I have both - one comment I would like to make is the Apple connectivity with Siri. Working at home using the AirPods I have found them comfortable for hours, but most noticeably is the ‘Siri’ actions I can control the iPhone (take a call easily), Siri the lights on and off etc…. I don’t need to reach for any devices - they just work :)
Both terrific headphones.
Nice review but not sure why your review is biased towards Max pro headphones as Bose Ultra sounds way better
Certainly not biased. I personally prefer the Bose, if not because of apples stupid purse case alone!
@@PeteMathesonI wish the Bose was easier to put back in the fitted case.
In the sound quality test, I noticed a pretty big difference compared to the Bose and the air pods max. And this is coming from someone whose hard of hearing
u deaf?
@@PeteMatheson I think people are preferring the warmth of the Bose to the cold detail of the Apple, but imo it would be great to hear the qualcomm enabled audio vs the regular audio, to see if that makes a difference for some people with enabled devices, or if it's a gimmick. Personally, I consider the coldness of the apple to be a form of distortion, and it's better to be warm than cold with consumer audio, which BT audio is.
Wich one would be better for working out at the gym? (Having a S23U) Or should I straigth up go for some earbuds?
I don’t know what to think about the quality…considering I’m listening to the video on headphones… too meta for me to figure out
Video quality overall is a breath of fresh air!
AirPods could definitely use some more color. Would go with the Bose. Not sure if only me though…
But wouldn’t change my XM5 for any of them, and to be honest, for on the go/heavy duty headphones on the same price of the AirPods I would go with M&D MW75.
Hi do you think that I can use one of them for drumming as well?
Because I’m a drummer.
There’s no doubt. Bose is better than AirPod Max.
What about the focal bathys?
Do they bleed?
8:50 I will say though, I've only really had troubles with Automatic Device Switching with Macs, and this was remedied after updating to Sonoma.
I haven’t figured out the battery management of the Bose, they seem to drain when “off”. Is there a way of being able to tell if they are truly off and not in standby?
Press and hold the power button till you hear chime
Hello what is that sleek looking drawer cabinet you are using at the beginning of video? Thanks for sharing!
Can I hear from Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Industry Leading Noise Canceling Headphones?
ALL my last 5 Bose products broke down after 2 and a half years. Bose sleepbuds, Bose Revolve, Bose Revolve +, Bose Soundbar 300. They sound amazing and "look" durable but in reality they are not.
The BOSE have LDAC now? Wow. Really considering them now.
I would`n`t buy the airpods max now because I wait for a gen 2 release but they are still way better, especially in the sound quality.
Those Bose are 100% better sounding in the first test, shocked you chose the AirPods.
