Necessity is the mother of all inventions. I used the top part of a gum tree, leaves and all to cover some seeds. just tied a few branches on to the back of my Pajero. and dragged them around for a few hours Worked a treat
Thanks for the video mate ! We’re about to overseed a couple paddocks, same as you the drillers are just too expensive and contractors won’t touch it due to the small size of the job. So fingers crossed we get some results !
I dont have a lot of experience with setaria. As much as it goes against the grain the quickest way would be to poison the setaria and replant rhodes. You could also plough in a dry season a few times and expose the roots of the setaria constantly until you are sure its going to rain then plant the rhodes. The second option is what I would do in my country. We have a long period from August until November, a lot of years, with very low rainfall exposing the roots will not get rid of the seed in the ground but if you plant heavily the rhodes will be the dominant species. If things go well. Poisoning the grass will not get rid of the seed either. John
Thanks John. It’s such a tough grass, I think spot spraying it would work. We don’t get much rain August to early November either. It’s only 2 acres but I need to do something.

If your doing it on the cheap go and buy yourself a bag of finch seed from a rural supply shop, you'll pay $30-$40 for 20kg and you'll get 6 or 7 different types of millet. Also do t spray out your wynn cassia out it's a good nitrogen builder.
No I dont spray out the Wynn Cassia only knock it back to plant. That was planted a while ago and its come back very good. Thanks for the tip re the finch seed. John
Hi John I want to reseed over my existing grass that is a bit light on right now. I’ve directed toward a tyne plough /ripper. I think the discs is all I need as you are doing. It is fairly compacted in places from stock. What do you think I should use? Thanks in advance
Fire Minx Not having seen the ground its a bit hard but I would do a test. If the discs will make a reasonable seed bed then thats ok. It might be quicker to rip it lightly if its a bit compacted then disc. John
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 Even with a seed spreader like you have the tactics I see is they broadcast boma rhodes seeds on existing grass in the paddocks .no ploughing is done.just seed spread together with farmyard manure stored in hips thrown from the back of articulated tractor.The grass is left to grow at the beginning of rainy season.then harvesting is done.manure is spread first.later they just broadcast seeds.
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 I use Napier grass ,some silage and normal dry grass like what you feed pigs as hay to keep costs down plus mineral salts and DCP.
I buy my seed from premium seeds I believe they have a branch in Brisbane. As far as the veriety they would be better placed to advise you than me. I do know that most seed companies have blends taylored for horses. John

You could also seed the paddock first then run over it with your discs and attach the tire drag behind the discs, which would save you one pass.

The rhodes we use for hay is a local X breed. John
Here it's just broadcast by hand.
