    Both sound amazing. EMG's, especially the Het Set, are incredibly clear and clean sounding though. The JB has a famous/infamous tone! When it comes to preference between the two, one can't go wrong!

    Awesome comparison video, one of the best I've seen. I love the Duncans & the EMG's. I used 81/85's for a long time. They both sound great, just different. If I only had 1 guitar, I would probably get the Duncan's. They cover all bases, no battery & you can coil split, etc for even more tones.

    I like to play oldschool metal (thrash/death) 80 90s styles and use EMG 81/85 more than 15 years but now I prefer and choose JB instead EMG cause sound of passive pickup is real natural touching when you play vibrato on Riff/Lead it's made me fun more than EMG 81 even got less output a bit.

    Surprising how they share similarities despite one being active/semi-active and the other passive. JB is underrated for metal. I know I turned my nose at it, but then I tried it in downtuned guitar (C#) and it was amazing, to my surprise!

    I noticed a drop in the mid-punch between the two in the video. I have the Het set in a similar guitar (Epi EX84) and the Duncan set in my KV2. All wood/build quality issues aside, I don't notice much, if any drop-off in the mids. Maybe a characteristic of the DV8?
    On a side note, the Het set bridge is SUPER hot compared to any other pick-up (even other high gain beasts). I loved the JH neck, but hated the bridge initially. I play a mix of genres in a cover band, so everything sounding like nu metal was not good at all (admittedly, the 81 wasn't much better at this) and the pup sounded dull when the volume rolled off more than 15% or so.
    I put a graphtech Ghost bridge on the Epi (piezzo system) to make the guitar a "1-stop shop for heavy, lighter, clean, and acoustic sounds. This caused a bit of signal loss due to the added addition pre-amp/toggle circuitry and made the 81 originally in the guitar sound gain-starved. Swapped to the Het set and BOOM, the little bit of signal loss resulted in the perfect amount of gain for the pick-up!

    Iv used both these as replacement pups more or less since the early 90s and I can honestly say this is a realistically fair comparison. IMHO if you need more Metallica go EMG obviously but the Duncan JB is more articulate versatile and will sound better on almost everything except where the song is recorded with EMGs. Miss that balls out EMG 81 tone but always left me wanting more when not playing metal

    • @aryinc

      i've got both. invader sounds more scooped due to the "ceramic" magnet that's balaced more on highs and low with a dip in the midrange, more "chunky" if you will, great low end. and jb with an alnico 5 delivers better in the midrange for leads and such.

    Nice video. To me this proves that going active is really unnecessary (again, for me). Actually, since the Het Set bridge has a ceramic magnet, it would have been a closer comparison with a Duncan Distortion...since it's a JB with a ceramic magnet. The JB has an Alnico 5 magnet. The JB is one of my all-time favorite pickups....good for heavy blues, classic metal, hair metal, modern metal, and thrash. That said...it would be cool to hear some of the newer EMG offerings like the 57 and Retro-Actives like the Hot 70s, etc. However, I'll tell you....the Dimarzio Dominion would "beat" both of these pickups in this setting. The Dominion is one of the best sounding pickups I've heard and better than any active I've heard. Of course, it's my opinion LOL. It would be great to see/hear you demo the Dominions. I also prefer Dimarzio neck pickups...the 36th Anniv PAF, newer PAF 59, and the Bluesbucker are some of the nicest neck humbuckers I've heard.

    • @Crypticmaskguitar
      @Crypticmaskguitar  3 роки тому

      It's all up to what you are trying to achieve, for sure. I dig the Dominions that I have in one of my King Vs. It's hard for me to choose which I prefer between the Dominion, Imperium, and Titans. All 3 sound AWESOME. But I can certainly see why you love the Dominion! Cheers -Ryan

    Hard to say what I prefer. I hear a subtile difference even on my cellphone speaker. Some riffs sound more clear "in you face" with EMG but at the same time lack the "warmth" of the seymor duncans. So it all depends on what you're after and in what situations. :p

    Both sound great but I have to admit the JB/Jazz sound warmer, chunkier, articulate and tone is a little more rich. The Jazz neck did not sound that great with heavy distortion. A Duncan 59 would sound better in aspect. Great shootout and great riffing sir!!!

    the jb sound more fizzy on the low end, not a big deal since they sound fatter in the lead. the hetset has the rythm in the pocket but probably sounds more sterile on the leads. maybe a combo of emg and jb in a 2 guitarist settup ^^. one going for the more scooped nature and the other more fo the midrange.

    • @podhditalia
      @podhditalia 4 роки тому

      @@sgtjeremyh i've always been a passive guy so i'm judging basing on what i know and owned. actives just have slightly different tech going on (preamps and stuff), but for the most part classic "evergreen" pickups are based on the same tonal blueprint, speaking voice-wise. as you can hear there as well, there's not a world of difference between an 81 and a JB. close your eyes and it's not that difficult to just forget about it. maybe you just have some EQing issues in your signal processing. also mind that you'd have to re-do all your electronics to switch to passives.
      this being said, if your priority is cutting through the mix live, you basically can't go wrong on a JB - for a passive at least. it has that unmistakable upper mid kinda "cocked wah" spike. like it or hate it, but it's been the sound of at least two decades and counting in hard rock and metal. in the studio, you just EQ it out (if needed). live, it cuts through anything like a hot knife on butter. but that's not to say an 81 can't cut through. a JB will be just more prominent on that particular aspect - imo. i know i'm a mid heavy, treblehead kind of guy so i love my JB. it's really a matter of personal taste and, let's say, tonal self awareness.

    Honestly couldn't tell with High gain clean sounds the Duncans win

      It's definitely subtle! Basically the Duncan's are hotter and fuller whereas the Hetfields are much cleaner. Both are GREAT choices, though! Cheers -Ryan

    This test does not make any sense. Every guitar sounds different. You should use only one guitar for comparison.

      This is a VERY common way of testing pickups... one of the. reasons behind it is wiring. One has quick attach and one requires soldering. This all takes up a lot of time. For a simple, throw away video like this... it's not worth it. BUT it's always great when more people make videos... and they are very easy to do, they just take time. I recommend looking into making this comparison yourself. That way you can make the video how you would like to see it. Cheers -Ryan

    The designer of the white guitar must have been having a bad day when that was on the drawing board.
