    Seymour Duncan JB is THE humbucker of a period. You think of a hot humbucker - you think of JB. Just like many legendary things it isn't perfect, but there are reasons why it became so iconic) I love this pickup.

      I play 70s and 80s prog rock/metal/jazz fusion and the JB totally delivers. I use a very different kind of distortion than all that moronic chugging stuff. I don't detune.

    And mineral oil can loosen the frets. I use a wax called Howard's feed a wax. It conditions the fret board nicely and it's not oil based so it won't threaten the seating of the frets. Not to down play Pixxy's guitar knowledge. He's a great insight on guitars and great player as well . We share the same passion for guitars. I was a loyal Gibson and fender guy until I bought 1996 Ibanez rg270dx. It has the tb-4 and jazz pups with coil split and an original Floyd rose trem. Bought it off ebay for 265 beans. Once I played it, it was game over. Bought 3 more after that. Just great built, great playing guitars for the money.

    Man you are awesome! This is just what I needed! I've been debating about pickups for my RG and I decided to get Duncan JB 'S and jazz but I didn't know which single coil to use. So when I heard you say that the stack you are using gives a stratocaster sound I was like, "Heck Yeah, man!" And yeah, the Ibanez stock pickups are way too light. Great job, dude! ROCK ON!

    • @guitarplayingSQUIRREL
      @guitarplayingSQUIRREL 9 років тому

      Just a word of advice. If your RG has a trembucker, (edge, Floyd, etc) you need the Seymour Duncan TB-4, same as the JB just spaced for the tremolo bridges.

    • @guitarplayingSQUIRREL
      @guitarplayingSQUIRREL 9 років тому

      +Vinny Raptor. If it is a Fender style tremolo, you would need to have the trembucker for the spacing on the poles to line up with the strings properly. I just ordered mine actually Sunday night. I have the RG series ibanez with the edge III locking trem.

    • @SprunkCovers
      @SprunkCovers 9 років тому +2

      melissa12010 the tremolo is an ibanez synchronized tremolo, but i have seen this guitar (ibanez grx20) and guitars like ibanez sa series (i think this one had synchronized tremolo) and with humbuckers and not trembuckers, so thats why i have my doubt

    For what it’s worth, mineral oil is also a petroleum distillate but I’m told it and its variants are perfectly safe to use on exposed grain wood. Lemon oil is a big no no, it has a solvent in it and can break down glue holding down inlays and fret markers.

    Boiled linseed oil for the fret board. I've used it for 20 yrs. on my Yamaha classical acoustic. Put a lite drop on a cloth to clean the muck from the fret board and the another lite coating again on the board and let it set for a few min. to let it soak in and wipe it clean. You can find it at Lowe's or Home Depot. I've only been able to find it in the larger cans so it should last a lifetime.

    I just ordered a Gibson Les Paul with a JB in the bridge.. been unsure about exactly whether it's better distorted than the 498t but it sure sounds good clean, exactly what I feel is the perfect bridge clean humbucking sound - warm, focused and responsive.

    I put the same JB / Jazz into my Ibanez 450DX and the guitar just came alive with great tone. JB is kinda my go to bridge pickup. I have '59 and Jazz in neck positions of my guitars. But yeah If you don't like the Ibanez guitars because they are bright and brittle sounding but love the fast necks, throw in SD's and it's a whole new tone.

    I have an S370 and I think this is by far the best "Super Strat" there is. The body is the perfect shape and thickness, and the balance is perfect as well. The body is a single piece of solid Mahogany. I just stripped the nasty RedRockFlat orange paint off mine this weekend, I can't believe they covered up the beautiful wood with that hideous orange! Used ones in near perfect shape go for south of $250 dollars. I bought mine with a hardshell case for $149.

    Really great combo there. I have an ESP LTD EDC401-VF with a JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck position, and I love that combo. The Jazz is a little too soft for me. I really want a Strat with STK-S6's in it too. I'm sure you're already aware of it, but for those who don't know the STK-S6 is the noiseless version of the SSL-5, which is the pickup that David Gilmour uses in his black Strat.

    Those Ibanez S series guitars are a good choice for size, comfort, playability, light weight, thin necks, etc. A nice alternative to the Fender Stratocaster (hence the S), with their own vibe. Don't have any, but they are cool. Saw a dude out on a gig with one once (SSH), and he sounded spectacular, and it looked very comfortable on him, like he wore it well.

    • @nealixd.3011

      I agree with you, that the middle pup often doesn't get the love it deserves. Once I played a gig on vocals and mostly rhythm on the middle pup of my Carvin DC145 (HSH). Don't think I changed it the whole set we played. Was their AP11 pup, sounded great through a Carvin AG100 amp. It is surprising also, how well voiced the Carvin amps are for Carvin guitars when you match them up. My DC145 also sounded spectacular through their vintage series tube Nomad amp.

    This is a very timely video, I have an S370 RRF ( Korean version they made in 2001/2002 ) and I am going strip in down and upgrade it, I have pretty much decided to go with Railhammer Humbuckers but I was still searching for what to put in the middle position, I think I might have found what I need right here! The stock pickups are lacking in the bottom end for sure and are not really muddy, but they aren't really clear either maybe because they just aren't that hot. Thanks for the video.

    When I put duncans on an Ibanez RG, I was advised that I only needed to get a trembucker (F-spaced) for the bridge as the spacing on the neck pickup wouldn't be too far out - this turned out to be the case. I'd leave it as is, but the thought of upgrading another guitar to Jeff Beck grade awesomeness ..... Sweet !

But the oldest guitar in my collection is a very beat and worn out Jackson Frankenstein with all Carvin parts. a M22SD in the bridge and 2 AP11's in the neck and middle with all other parts Carvin.... tuning keys, all wiring, jack, only the neck and body are Jackson. Just try Carvin pickups. they are amazing.

    I have the exact same guitar, but with a black finish. Seeing yours makes me want to paint mine. I'm considering the Duncan Full Shred in the bridge. Either that or the Dimarzio Super 3 which is one of my favorites and maybe a Dimarzio Hum from hell in the neck. I don't use the mid pickup, just unhooked. :-)
    Love that trem. They are the best. I've got other OFR trems, and schaller floyds on my charvels, etc, and I still think this low pro edge is the best. That and the gotoh who makes the low pro has a version of the floyd which is better than the original and even Suhr guitars now uses the Gotoh instead of the real floyd. They say it's better quality and works better, etc,. :-)
    Thanks for the video's. Very cool.

    I was thinking of buying the Ducan Jazz, but before I do, is there any other Seymour Duncan pickup that is a humbucker that has a more high end (brighter than the Jazz)?

    Yes, and it's a great contribution to the discussion. :)

    I'm still bashing my noggin' over which pickups to put in my S-470...I've got an EMG-85, a Duncan Distortion, or a Full Shred I was considering for the bridge...that damn mahogany body!

      The JB SH4 sings... I have used EMG 81/85/60 ... I prefer Duncans .. used to use Jazz in neck but recently switched to 59 as the cleans so more pristine and gain notes sing better.

      I've always abhorred the 81...had a JB in an old "no bozos" Beretta...I'm considering running an Alnico II in the neck and splitting it...a 5way switch with two humbuckers.

      Thanks for the feedback though...I know just where I can get a used JB too!

      I don't mind the EMG 81 .. it just sounds a tad thin compared to the JB and over compressed ... I just love the overall sound and dynamics of the JB ..it sustains better too.

      Try a Custom SH-5 in the bridge, you'll thank me later.

    Hello Steve! I really liked the sound of your new pickups! Clarirty, bright, crisp sounding. Of course your tone patches are amazing and so rich! The rhythm pickup and and No 2 sound best for me... Your playing seems more fluid of late, effortless... Your chops are tight! Nice vid!!!! Thanks for the upload and great seeing you again!!!

    Hey Steve, what's up?!? I recently picked up a 2004 s470 in part due to this video and also since I got it for $299 CDN at my local guitar store :) I'm having issues with my 2 and 4 position on the switch. I'm not sure if I have it wired funny or if I cooked the switch when I changed the power sound pickups for some inf1 and inf2 pickups. Can you please post a picture or video showing how you have this wired? I have a JB / Jazz combo in the mail and want to get the most out of them. Unfortunately the Ibanez wiring diagram is terrible so a video showing how to wire the 5 way switch for these pickups would be a huge help. Thanks dude!

      Hi my friend. I'm interested in the wiring diagram pickup and 5-way switch. Well thank you.

      I think , if you google it you will find a plethora of diagrams, i myself fitted e new 5-way switch, but it had an extra deck of switches on it, i used it to control the gain of a aftermarket build-in preamp, so when i choose the in-between sounds, (they flaw a litte on my set-up) i get a 3 dB extra boost.

    I have a H-S body guitar. Slanted Bridge config with a JB on it. Will the STK-6 be a good match?

    I love your videos, theyre always extremely entertaining and insightful. The only thing that's bugging me is the difference in volume between the guitar and your voice. I have to turn the volume up to hear what you say but then get blown away by the killer guitar licks, both in awe and sound level lol... Maybe hang the mike from above you? I don't mind hearing the pick every now and again if it means I can hear you clearly speak. Cheers for the awesome video.

    I use linseed oil on my ebony and rosewood. Just need a few drops. It really works great!

    How did you get the stack plus to fit? I have the same model guitar and if I were to dig any deeper it’d go through into the trem cavity.
