great video, jack Chesapeake and Ohio 614 that was my son's favorite 4-8-4 engine she was awesome, the sound of the locomotive was great and the whistle on 614 sounds excellent the whistle I think is a six chime i really like the whistle she started from 1980 and she ran the chessie steam finale ecore in 1981 this engine was riding on the rails of Glory.
It sure is on the top of my list for favorite steam. But I think 1218 still is tops. I'm looking forward to see that UP Big Boy run. Thanks for watching...
We chased the Chessie steam special with the T-1 loco, between Grand Rapids, MI and Lansing, MI in the late 1970's! Very nice to have caught it on video as I did not have a camcorder till 1990!
Thoae were the days: Chessie Safety Express, Southern Ry steam program, Western Maryland Ry excursions. Gone but never forgotten. Thanks to the Ross Rowlands, Graham Claytors, and George Leilichs for some of the best days of my younger life!
Ross was running her that day. I got some great still shots of her coming out the west portal of the Mt. Airy tunnel and then later when they did a runby at Weaverton. Ross had her flying with plenty of smoke for that runby. Great memories, thanks for posting!
It's a little unfortunate that you couldn't afford the equipment to shoot this on tape. Sure, with film it is easier to transfer in high quality depending on the scanner you have. Unfortunately that sacrifices the frame rate. With tape the motion is a lot smoother.
Yes Mark. That huge dome on the top center of the boiler holds the sand. You can see the piping that runs down the side, and heads to the drivers. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ actually the 614 is on display down the road from me in Clifton Forge VA at the C&O RR museum. Supposedly they did restore her to run excursions out of the Greenbrier resort as the Presidential express But due to lack of funds and they couldn't decide on a route the project was canceled in 2012. Plus these days steam is off limits to CSX RR.
I wish eastern class 1’s wouldn’t be such a holes toward steam. CSX which is the merger of Chessie and Seaboard has had a ban on steam since around 1995. NS had steam excursions again for several years thanks to former CEO Charles “Wick” Moorman who is a steam buff, but this year it seems that NS is pulling the plug, they auctioned five of the refurbished excursion coaches last summer and so far there are no 611 excursions scheduled this year. Wick is no longer CEO of NS and the current CEO is not as steam friendly. NS will still allow deadhead moves of 765 and 611.
I can't remember the exact cost Thomas. I do remember, it wasn't cheap. The cartridge only held 3-1/2 minutes about 50' of film, and it cost the same amount to developed it, as it cost to purchase. I have 11 400' reels of railroad stuff in my collection. So that works out to 88 cartridges of film. Then I have racing and other stuff. So I bet I run about 100 cartridges of film through that old camera. Thanks for watching...
Bob Swanson's custom K5LA 5 chime whistle...
Its a beautiful thing! Thanks for watching...

Ross Rowland's baby at work!
Ole Ross was a master! LOL
@@1jackdk He once commented that running a steam engine was "better than sex", a comment NOT muchly appreciated by his lovely wife!
Very nice video. Handsome engine with a fantastic whistle!
Great video. Looks like one of those color movies from the 1950's.
LOL, it sure does.
Reminds me of a video I bought several years ago, "614:Wheeling", produced by Bruce Manwiller

Excellent video Jack.
Great footage! The whistle seems lower pitched than in the other videos I've seen. Does that have to do with the camera's sound system?
different whistle
Could these engines drop sand for traction?
That steam horn / whistle is the scariest thing I've ever heard..
Yes Mark. That huge dome on the top center of the boiler holds the sand. You can see the piping that runs down the side, and heads to the drivers. Thanks for watching...
Awesome!
God, if only there was still a steam engine that ran regularly on the Old Main Line!
Awesome Jack!! Long live Chessie
I agree 100 % Kevin. Thanks, and thanks for watching...
Is #614 in Baltimore? and great video again jack. Hearing these sights and sounds of that time through ykur vids is a treasure. thanks
Not sure where the 614 is right now. I'm thinking its sitting somewhere in WV. Thanks for watching...

It is to bad the times we are in with all the law suits and insurance cost. It really but a hurt on mainline steam.
you can really hear it pounding the inclines!
Jack how much was that film with sound?
