My dad wss a fireman on the Reading RR. I REMEMBER HIS DAYS OF FIREING THOSE T-1,'S THE 2100, 2124, 2102, 2101.RETIRED AS A READING RR ENGINEER 1973.👍🇺🇸
It is in Baltimore at the B&O Railroad museum painted as the American Freedom Train. I went to Baltimore just to see it since I was a kid when it came through my town painted like this.
I lived in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and could see it when it came through Darby at 6th and Main streets. How I longed to have a ride on that train.
@Frank A. Merola, We lived in Sharon Hill when I was young. My Dad would take my brothers & me down to 6th & Main to watch the Chessie & every steamer that came through, from the late 50’s to ‘66. We would’ve given anything to ride that Chessie!
I seen the 2101 train in this paint scheme as a little kid in Ohio and I fell in love with it. I always said if I ever had enough money and time to ever own a backyard 1/3rd model track system that I'd want a replica 2101 painted in that beautiful black, orange, and red.
@generationll I do believe, that after it was in the fire, it was cosmetically restored, and in AFT colors, in the Baltimore museum. Thanks for watching...
The steam locomotive became a fixture in America and around the world. They made the world around them shake at their might. When you stood by one and felt the warmth of its fire and boiler and heard its gentle sounds, you would swear it was alive.
@iusetano Thanks! She was a beauty, and glad I got to ride be find her. Its to bad 2101 was caught up in that roundhouse fire, but that did give us a chance to ride behind, and photograph the 614. Thanks for watching...
I left a comment here on this video two years ago. 2101 is on static display at the B&O museum. She needs a new boiler to make her operational. It makes me want to cry. You might ask how a grown man can get emotional over a train... All I can say is you had to be there. I don't expect CSX or their shareholders to foot the bill, and I don't want the government to use funds they stole from you & me to do it either. But damn, if I hit the powerball I'd foot the bill myself, just to see her run again.
I hear yah CrazyBear. Chessie, or CSX, did make good for the fire damage to 2101. They gave Ross Roland the C&O 614 in a swap deal from the museum. The deal was, Rolland would cosmetically restore 2101, Rolland got the title to 614. The one thing that worked out good, was that we all got a chance to see some of the finest 4-8-4 to ride the rails. But I know what your saying. Back in the late 80's, I worked many years on the restoration of B&LE 2-10-4 #643, it now its just rotting away in Pittsburgh. Thanks for watching...
CrazyBear65 If I recall they didn't actually run any tests on the boiler so it is uncertain if a new one is necessary or not. I believe the reason that Chessie, the B&O Museum, and Mr. Rowland decided it wouldn't be worth it to check and did as jackmp294.5™ just explained.
+jackmp294.5™ Yes, it's a real shame. Practically no steam operates in the Northeast no because of CSX's policy, despite how much revenue and publicity steam powered exercusions could generate.
+JCBro2014 Have you forgotten about NS? Sure most of the trips have operated in the south or midwest, very few in PA, NY, etc. and no open windows, but at least one class 1 sees the value of a steam program. And 611 came back. C&O 614 is still stuck at the C&O Heritage Center in VA because of a stubborn 3 letter class 1 railroad. And Reading 2100 will run again, perhaps even NS will let it pull some trips. It seems Andy Muller of the RBMN railroad doesn't want to restore the 2102 at this time, perhaps he feels the 425 is enough for their operations. Steamtown has no interest in restoring 2124, and the 2101 is non operational at the B&O museum. 2101 and 2100 actually swapped tenders after the fire.
More classic footage! I saw this unit as the American Freedom Train in 1976 while stopped at Maryland's Martin Airport-got many great pix of it as such! Again more stuff I'm saving for a future slide show. Have you seen the Freedom Train yourself? Interesting how you got the motion pictures and I got the still photos! Never knew Ross Rowland but met his nephew back in the 1980s.
@bullfrog1954 I got a very short clip of the AFT at Delaware Water Gap,But to short for a UA-cam video.I do have pictures of AFT on a Reading turntable in Allentown,PA, and pictures of the burned hulk in Hagerstown MD.I may put a video together of slides & clips of the last years of 2101 as the AFT,CSS,and then chared ruins. My wife and I where on a trip,Ross was sitting behind us in the coach BS'in.We where on SandPatch and went into emergency,he had to go see what they did to his engine then.
Man, she is beautiful in any paint scheme. I remember the AFT, I took the conveyor belt tour thru in 76 in Pittsburgh. I was 10. Wish I still had pictures, but I had my own fire in 03. How badly was she damaged in the fire? 'Cosmetically restored' sounds like non-running. Will she ever run again? I'd love to ride behind her.
The bell is fixed JCBro. It doesn't move at all. The clanger inside the bell is air actuated, and hits the inside the inside of the bell when turned on. Thanks for watching...
What bridge is this? It's not the big bridge across the river at Havre De Grace/Perryville as there's no overhead wires for the Northeast Corridor trains...
Yes she was. That was a sad day, but also gave life to C&O #614. Here is a picture I took of 2101's tender taken with 2100 at Hagerstown, MD. www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/25053625345/in/album-72157654735562140/ Thanks for watching...
the most beautiful repaint i have ever seen
I was living in Darby, PA, when the Chessie Special came rolling past. I can still remember that sound !
It was fun to watch it cross 6th and Main. I have a print of it hanging on my wall.
Definitely awesome! I'd love to see more stuff like this...

I got pictures of it in Freedom train paint, and when it was stored at Hagerstown all scorched. Really sad to see her in that condition...

Thanks WRRRA! Sure wish I could go back and see this again with todays camera equipment! Thanks for watching...
i was i was born around the time of steam trains... but 85' will have 2 do lol... u haves some great videos!!

Dude I feel you!!! If had 10 million dollars I'd restore her! Oh well I can dream lol
It’s blue, not black.
I remember riding an excursion pulled by this locomotive, although it was the Freedom Train.
Who ever converted this footage did a nice job! The quality is great! :]
@generationll I do believe, that after it was in the fire, it was cosmetically restored, and in AFT colors, in the Baltimore museum. Thanks for watching...
wow. above all of the youtube videos, i would have to say this is the most intersting piece. alot history here. thanks for posting.

Let's squash them with the now running 614!
Let's use a German WW2 80cm railroad cannon!
Great looking Baldwin Steamer.
LOVE IT!!! Wonderful video!!!

Very cool footage! Too bad this isn't running, I'd love to see her!
Awesome video jack!
Thanks PM1223. She was a beauty, and sounded great as well. Thanks for watching...

If only CSX was willing to do stuff like this. Alas, the only steam trains that come to my hometown now are from the Gramlings.
It's hard getting on their site for tail fan stuff. I do have some things by C S X.

Her whistle sounded like soo 1003.

The 2100, her sister is under restoration in Pennsylvania to run.
@1jackdk oh hell yea good thing im getting a HO Scale Replica of the Southern Pacific Daylight for christmas stay tuned
Awesome!
I noticed in the second clip that despite the sound of a ringing bell, the bell on 2101 isn't moving. Is there an explanation for that?
The bell is fixed JCBro. It doesn't move at all. The clanger inside the bell is air actuated, and hits the inside the inside of the bell when turned on. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ Ah, that explains it.
After run of American Freedom Train, 2101 was painted to orange and yellow for Chessie Syestem prepare for Chessie Steam Special.
B&O 2101 was a good train
3 Days before Chuck E Cheese Pizza Time Theatre is Born.
too bad i was -11 years old when this was taped...
What bridge is this? It's not the big bridge across the river at Havre De Grace/Perryville as there's no overhead wires for the Northeast Corridor trains...
+Willysmb44 Its the B&O bridge just up river from the NEC. Can't be more than a mile, if I remember correctly.
@CSX6000 More! Post more!
Where is this steam locomotive today?
Why does it have two tenders?
It has two tenders to carry extra water. I don't think the second one carried coal. They did that so they didn't have to refuel as often.
I'm checking into it and plan to call the B&O museum
Did it have a water tender?
Yes it did Harrison. The water tender was an ex-NYC Mohawk tender they enlarged. Thanks for watching...
You got sound on yours, look at mine.
I could say this was a good video just needs some improvement on the whistle
She was burned in a roundhouse fire
