    Great video. I'm very happy with my JX-Pro purchase. I've had it for all of 2 days and it's my first hand grinder, so after much research and procrastination before purchasing from AB, I'm very happy with the quality and the price of this unit.
    I'm still dialling it in, but for those still deliberating - I've been using a Sunbeam grinder for about 4 years and can barely scrape in a decent espresso shot with this grinder. The JX-Pro's grind "fineness" (and overall range) exceeds the Sunbeam unit by such a large margin that it's not even in the same ball park. On the JX-Pro, after a fresh calibration and sitting on "0", it takes a full rotation (50 clicks) plus a further 10-15 clicks before I end up in the usable espresso range to pull a lovely 25s shot on my Sunbeam EM7000. Any grind setting below this (finer) results in my EM7000 choking and unable to get any water through the puck, which I've never been able to do with the Sunbeam grinder - this is with an 18g dose in the double basket. Obviously not an ideal outcome, but what it shows is how fine a grind the JX-Pro can produce. I've also used it all the way near 200 clicks for French Press and the consistency of this grind (to my untrained eye) is exceptional and resulted in a fantastic tasting cup.
    I just ground 18.2g at around setting 70 (1 full rotation = 50 clicks, plus 20 extra clicks) and it took me 36s to grind with very little effort. You can't grind "casually" as it will get stuck, so you do need to give it some elbow grease to keep the momentum going but it's very easy, not a chore at all. This initially choked my machine before it eventually settled to 9bar and pulled a good shot, so there's still some dialling in to do. What I will note is that "0" on the adjustment collar can actually be ANY number. My "0" is actually "4", so just count the rotations/clicks from that point to know where you are in the grind range. I imagine this will be the case every time you recalibrate the Pro...so simply understanding what your new "0" is and then counting up from there seems to be the approach.
    All in all - very big fan of the JX-Pro and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fantastic hand grinder, at a fantastic price (in comparison to the others such as Comandante/Kinu etc).

      @@AlternativeBrewing I just opened an Ethiopian blend and pulled a 36s/32g espresso shot. I've never tasted stonefruit/citrus & chocolate quite like this. Every single espresso shot I've had prior to this was bitter and strong. This one was sweet and fruity - blew my mind. I can finally relate to the coffee connoisseurs and actually taste the flavour profile on the bag!

    It's funny. Buying one of these was like shopping for expensive jewelry for our wedding. I agonized over minutiae. But once I brought it home, it was the only thing I had. And it performed like a champ, and I never wondered about shortcomings in comparison to others.
    Oh, I got a K-plus because I don't do espresso. I might on occasion need a fine grind for a moka pot, but it's mostly filter. I was really trying to decide between the JX and the K-plus, with my main deciding factor being I'm an adult and I never spend money on myself, so I decided to indulge.

    The Jx Pro is really on that sweet spot of performance to price.
    I was about to buy timemore c2 for my aeropress but I thought maybe I want to do espresso in the future. I saved a little more and bought the Jx Pro, it's already a week and breezed a 250g coffee beans like it was nothing.
    I still have to wait for my coffee beans to arrive, sadly I have to force myself with instant coffee, yuck!
    Jmax also looks cool but it's already too expensive for me.

    I got the Jx Pro as a brew method grinder that's capable of standing in when my Breville SGP dies. The ability to track changes in where you're at can be a bit arduous when switching from v60 size to espresso, but it's still fantastic. The distribution, clumping, retention are all good.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 роки тому +1

      I agree.- clumping and retention are things I tend to overlook on hand grinders - it's so minimal, that if there was noticeable issues, than the HG has some serious problems. STATIC on the other hand, either under the buurs, or in the catch cup can be something that's a deal breaker. It's fairly well matched between these grinders.

    Thanks for this video. Currently deciding between various 1Zespresso models. Which is surprisingly hard.
    I don't know if the topic was intentionally avoided, but the J-series burr design is extreemly close to the Italmill burrs in the Kinu M47, while the K-series burr design is extreemly close to the Comandante burr design in the Comandante C40. I am surprised there was not a tasting portion of this video, because at least for pour-over, people are reporting that the K-series and J-series are noticeably different. Which I think is credible given the very different distribution of boulders and fines you found.
    The JX pro vs. JX Max is also interesting. According to 1Zespresso that JX Max produces more fines than the JX/JX Pro. If this is true, then really the JX Max is almost to be treated as a different burr set entirely, with the Pro is actually likely the better grinder for pour-over, while the JX Max is the better grinder for espresso. Although the distribution in grind sizes is so close I'd love to see a blind test of this. Unfortunately when I e-mailed 1zespresso to get their thoughts on this, their recommendation was if I was primarily buying a grinder for pour-over, to get a K series and sidestepped this discussion.
    The K Plus vs. K Max is infuriating. Obviously the K Max exists because they're trying to consolidate parts for grinders, which in the long run is good for both consumers and 1z Espresso so no complaints there. It's also much better looking than the K Plus in my opinion. But they got rid of the blind shaker options. And while I know that for pour-over a blind shaker is basically useless and even for espresso it's kind of a gimmick since a funnel and distribution tool in most cases is faster and better, it just irks me that if I paid $10 for the Plus over the Max I'd have a grinder with an extra feature. So why not just pay the $10 and get the Plus? But the Max looks so much better on the counter and it's cheaper. So why not just get the Max? But I *want* a blind shaker if in the future I decided to try espresso. So why not just get the Pro? Repeat in circles forever.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 роки тому +12

      haha! Yeah that's partly why I mentioned early in the video - 1Zpresso have done a good job spreading out the features 😂 You don't really have the one grinder that has everything - yet you still have a pretty good choice. I agree with you the MAX versions look and feel way better than the PRO or PLUS..
      I'll make sure to add some tasting in the videos, it's just me in the studio sometimes - so a blind tasting can be tricky to confuse myeslf 😂
      The J-MAX grinds super fine, really easily - that was one of the discoveries I had - and as mentioned - what I thought was a comparable grind size was in fact much much finer on the JMAX than other grinders - at what should technically be almost identical burr gaps. So perhaps this is what 1Zpresso are referring too. I'd say it does have something to do with the titanium coating burrs.
      The K-plus with the teeth running up the burr flanks is very much like the Comandante I agree ... and I wouldn't be surprised if they had similar performances in grind quality because of this. I'll have to do that test when I get my hands on a C40 MK4 soon.
      The JMAX over the JX-PRO for espresso 100% I agree with you there - but they'll both do a really good job - it's just the JMAX is that much better for dialling in ... and I almost went with a different conclusion on the JX-PRO because of this, though from my limited time using them versus what the market is telling me, the JX-PRO is a very popular grinder as it's reasonably cheap and you get that value that is not seen in a hand grinder under $350aud. So I concurred that the JX-PRO is that budget precision grinder for all brewing methods, though notably espresso, where other grinders around the same price point don't even come close. For Filter Coffee ... it still outclasses everything around it, but it's a big jump for someone looking at the Timemore C2 for instances, at $109 to than suggest the quality is that much better for filter grinding to spend 1.5x more. I'm not sure I can make that argument.

      @kssarh You've summed up part of my myriad frustrations very well. I have a tonne of them around Kinu and Commandante as well. And now Appolo is there to further complicate matters.
      It can be a real pain if you're looking for the perfect "one and done" grinder and you're a picky person - which let's face it, most of us coffee morons are... Well, at least it's all first world problems and an enviable position to be in. 🤷

    I did find after about 1 month and 1.5 kg of espresso beans later, the grind settings loosened about 3 digits (12 clicks), and didn't go any further. Just something to note (likely to happen to any other grinder also). Otherwise, perfectly happy with it!

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Рік тому +1

      The Q2 makes fantastic clean tasting coffee. it is great for filter coffee, using the Hept burrs. I would say , the JX is a better performing grinder overall however. It'll grind much faster, with a bigger burr set and a better grind adjustment. JX, or the X-Pro all day 👌 I'd only consider the Q2 if for travelling and looking to keep everything super lightweight and compact, I find it a bit small and slow to grind for everyday. - However as the profiles go, the Q2 may sneak in there to be slightly better for the filter range than the JX. Tough call indeed! X-Pro is almost that in-between here! sorry 😂

      K-Plus is no longer available sadly! It has been replaced with the K-Max and K-Ultra which use the same burr, but different styles in the body and grind adjustment. I really loved this design as well with the removable base - though 1Zpresso have gone and removed this from all units.
      My concern with the SMEG basket is it may even be tapered? Starts out wide, and thins? ... It would not be more the 58mm, I'd be surprised if it were even 58mm. Sounds more like 51mm - 54mm. Normcorewares have some great tools to fit both. Including a Dose Ring for the 54mm size.
      The Timemore C3 looks to be the best priced for performance for what you're using it for. Or the 1Zpresso X-Pro, but that's getting up there for price.

      It's really any Stepless grinder - You could consider the Baratza Sette series - mainly the 270 and 270wi, and they fall in similar price brackets, but I'd say neither the Sette's would be as good for Filter grinding as the 1Zpresso grinders are. For Espresso - it's hard to beat an automatic grinder for shear power and ease. Eureka Grinders are decent, there's some models that do well in both espresso and filter - but ultimately I think a great Hand Grinder at the moment - is better than an average Electric Grinder - considering they fall in the same price brackets.

      @Max B I got so frustrated due to other factors outside the grinder that I gave up for a few weeks until I got good coffee and a wdt.
      This morning I just started the dial in process. An I have it narrowed down to around grind size 4. Now I'm going to dial in even more next weekend. But the manual machines are so controllable I know you can make good espresso with a k-plus. Between grind size, dose, water temperature, tamp pressure, and brew pressure you can dial in just about anything.

    To those wondering about the K-Max: It is just a K-Plus without the blind shaker, different colour (matching the J-Max colour) but still using the same 48 mm burr of the K-Plus. Literally, I got that response from 1Zpresso when I emailed them (great customer service by the way!) asking specifically for the difference. The color of the K-Max really got me.
    That being said; the video is spot on, and I love that Joshua keeps it fair amongst each. I tried the J-Max after a jealous mate bought one immediately after seeing my K-Max. My only issue with the J-Max is that dialing it in when you change beans can be tricky. Imagine you switch from one roast to another, there's a difference in density, so now you have to take a few more minutes to dial it in, pull the shot, calibrate as needed.... That being said, IMO too much precision can be a bad thing. Yes, you'll get the shot you want but at a cost of a lot of calibrating if you're switching beans. With the K-Max I only need about a 5 click range (somewhere between 28-33 clicks from 0; or 2.8-3.3 on the turn dial) to dial my espresso in.
    Just my experience with them, I dislike the fines for the J-Max as well on pour over, BUT again, as Joshua said - if you're only using it for mainly Espresso, it will do the job. K-Plus and K-Max still have my heart as the all-arounders and Comandate contenders!!!

    Thanks for the in-depth comparaison ! How about speed? The K-Plus (37sec on 20g of 800 microns) seems to be much quicker than JMAX (57sec) and JX (54sec) according to Kyle Rowsell, but he did not compare the JX Pro.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 роки тому +4

      So, just quickly - my thoughts on grinding speed has recently been divided into two camps. The underlying factor is 1) Ease of grinding (helped on by burr size, burr geometry, hande length, any other parameters still exploring) ... and 2) simple speed at which you are able to grind comfortably at based on the ease of grinding. These could well be two separate things - but in the case of the Jmax and Kplus. The Jmax is a faster grinder - but geez it's hard to get the crank handle at a consistent speed. Whereas the Kplus, is only slightly slower - but is much much smoother to crank the handle on. I would much prefer to grinder an extra 10 seconds on the Kplus than struglle each time on the Jmax for example. So I believe the Kplus can be faster - given it allows to grind more easily as well. But i would say in my findings - that the Jmax ground quicker than the Kplus did, at the same pace.
      The JX-Pro is a little harder to grind than the K-plus but no where near as hard as the Jmax - so for speed and ease, it sits somewhere in the middle 😀 Hope that answers your question?

You had dialed in and tasted jmax, kplus and c40 amongst others. The end result your were amazed at kplus and c40 but did not even rate the jmax. In watching i thought the texture of the c40 looked nice. You had chosen the kplus as your choise. I love the fact that jmax has the greatest adjustment capabilities but the ta0ste is of most importance. In this vid your rec for espresso is jmax which it clearly wasnt your other vid.. please explain🤔

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching and taking notice! It's a great question - I totally agree with you that "the taste is of the most importance" The retrospective of my change of mind came after tasting many more Espressos between these two particular grinders (Jmax, Kplus.) Also - I guess I delivered the Jmax in this video as the best suited for Espresso -based on the numbers alone, being the ridiculous VBM (Vertical burr movement) of 8.8µ microns versus that of the Kplus's 24µ.
      In choosing a Grinder to be the winner - there'll be 2nd best - but in terms of performance or value for money - there's really no 2nd best. - all the 1zpresso Grinders are fantastic. The flavour aspect is very nuanced with many factors - and I hope I do a good enough job presenting what differences I perceived the Grinders provide for flavour. The K-style burrs do, in my experience provide more clarity - more sweetness and highlights brighter notes compared to the J-style burrs - and this is information from 1Zpresso - as well as similar findings by myself and others who have tried both side by side. J burrs are similar to Comandante - though I would say there - Comandante Burrs are better in creating that rich, heavy texture espresso.
      The purchase scenario for the Jamx would be - if you're sold on the aesthetics, love to dial in espresso (or filter coffee) to perfect the recipe - and perhaps drink most of your coffee with Milk - and usually use a Blended Coffee, or nutty/chocolate forward noted coffee. Everything else - Kplus 👌

I will still do some V60 at home, and for travel (which happens a lot) I would use a V60 mainly (or an aeropress/french press/chemex on occasion), or PicoPresso for espresso. What do your recommend in the 1Zpresso lineup (I am guessing you say K-plus if price is OK - which it is. But if saving >$75 gets me similar cup-taste and workflow I'm ok saving some bucks). And the big question is if the Kinu or C40 is a better choice - so far in my reading they are not. Slight price premium without (from what I gather) better taste or workflow. I have not looked into the Apollo too much but don't see an advantage (not too worried about speed). I am intrigued by the Lido OE but I don't think I love the workflow. Lots of words. 2. The grinder starts at 0 setting and then one can adjust the dial. Does adjusting dial often to various grind settings reset the initial settings or once set to zero, it doesn't change?

    • @AlternativeBrewing

      Hi there, Thanks for your questions.
      1. Burrs will last a very long time. AS in 10 years plus considering their treatment. It's likely you won't see any performance loss from the burrs dulling over this time either. It takes many many kilograms of coffee - 500kg plus to dull these burrs - if you're only grinding 20-50g a day. That's a long time.
      2. Zero setting should not change once set. But periodically - if cleaning out the grinder - it doesn't hurt to recalibrate the zero point again. 😀

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  3 роки тому +12

      Sure 😀 Great purchase for your first HG btw. I would recommend titling the grinder almost upside down to - (once the beans are inside) and starting rotating the handle without any beans stuck between the burrs - than once you get a good motion, being the grinder the right way up and let the beans drop in to the moving burrs - this will help you get started - next - it's important to rotate both hands in a circular motion [ as oppossed to holding the grinder steady in one hand and just rotation the handle ] ... You want to rotate both hands and this will grind faster and make it easier to do !

    I don't see it mentioned often, but the Q2 is definitely the best grinder that fits inside the aeropress!
    That was the reason I bought it, although I wasn't sure it would fit, but it fits great, with some space for filters.

      Yes. A bigger far better burr set will make the difference to the quality of the grind produced. I wouldn't say it's night and day, but you can see the difference and the coffee will have more clarity in flavour due to a better consistent grind produced.
