This week on Arizona Illustrated… Saguaro City Music Theatre’s summer camp empowers children of all abilities and dazzles audiences; Peach’s Pantry in Cochise County feeds students in need and the group Mzekala serenades southern Arizona with Balkan tunes.
Saguaro City Music Theatre
After decades of performing professionally in the New York City theater scene, couple Dena DiGiacinto and Drew Humphrey moved to Tucson after a stint in St. Louis where they rekindled their love for their craft through teaching music theatre to kids of all abilities. During the pandemic they decided that a move to Drew’s native Tucson to open the Saguaro City Music Theatre and remove every barrier that stood in the way of any child taking the stage. Now three years later, the theatre is stronger than ever and transforming so many kid’s lives. In this story we follow three children’s journey through the theatre’s summer camp program as they prepare for the production of Willy Wonka!
Peach’s Pantry
Peach’s Pantry is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides food bags schools for students in need in Cochise County. Many school district employees; teachers, principals, counselors have been paying out of pocket to feed students. Founder of Peach’s Pantry, Sarah Pacheco has created the organization to make sure children don’t go unfed and have food security.
Mzekala
Thirty years ago in Tucson, six female vocalists and a drummer, came together to form an ensemble known as 'Mzekala'. 'Mzekala' is a Georgian word. It means the 'Sun Woman.' Their journey began in the heart of a folk dance community, where the lyrical melodies of Eastern Europe first enraptured their hearts. Drawing from this rich tapestry of musical heritage, their performances resonate with the ethereal essence of Balkan and Eastern European folk music. Their repertoire reverberates with the rhythms of traditional dance songs, a testament to their enduring dedication and unwavering passion. With each note, they weave a tapestry of joy, sharing the timeless allure of Balkan music with their beloved community.
