The fire hardened arrows are actually quite useful now, being able to hunt all four of the ptarmigans from a distance to prevent them from flying away.
@@500Healthwell, you certainly can play ignoring them. But all stews are based on ptarmigan broth + the new insulation stuff Maybe not worth the bullet but stones? I have stones for them
If you worried about food posioning from maple syrup just cook it into pancakes. I would recommend saving all your flour/oil for Rosehip Pies, They go bad fast but with cooking 5 it wont matter as they sit at 1% ruined and still provide the over powered instant fatigue increase. Max carry weight doesnt last long and its only 3kg.
"It takes two hours to get the feathers?" This is unsurprising to anyone who has ever plucked a chicken. It's *tedious*. Moreso if you're trying to preserve them.
When it comes to ptarmigans you silently shoot with an arrow, they're thinking something like "Whoa, what was that thing? But at least my buddy over there didn't run off, so it must be okay, no danger at all."
2 things I consider crucial about the new cooking recipes: - Never cook ptarmigan meat for calorie gain.. their main purposes are for making broth and being used in unique recipes.. - Pies are, for the most part, not worth cooking in masses even for their special benefits.. cause they rot too quickly.. but peach pie and rosehip pie are even better for fatique management than coffee.. especially before long climbs.. just don't cook more than one pie stack at a time..
you can cook more then one stack if you have cooking 5, because even ruined at 1% they work the same, they wont disapear and take up hardly any weight, with 6-9 you can sprint half the map without sleeping, its completly broken.
You're right.. with max level cooking, this wouldn't be an issue at all.. you're also right about the system being "broken".. i didn't thought about that.. one piece almost gives 25% fatigue back.. maybe even more, i'm not sure..
They call it feathers on the birds but it really is a down bunch/cluster. I can see that taking time. That is the smaller softer feathers on the belly and back. Basically all the rest that aren't real feathers.😊 Thanks for the video. Also, I imagine the venison pie will give more carry weight than the rabbit and bird. I haven't watched any others play so idk.
Getting down off of a bird takes practice. I believe two hours for the first fowl is not wrong. It should improve and stop at appx half an hour. Also having lukewarm water would make it easier. I am lazy, so I skin my fowls. But that won't give me good down.
Bannock is really good calories to weight. They are sorta like the box of crackers. They don't decay as fast as the pies either I think (though I don't play Interloper often). I really like the stews and other options, I've not spent any real time on CH or DP to see how often you get them through beach combing yet. I just started my trek to Forsaken Airfield as well, currently overnighting in Transfer Pass. I can't wait to see the new areas when they add them, and I kinda hope Episode 5 goes into those zones too. Also, the pies actually do give you more calories than the individual serving of Ptarmigan would. A Ptarmigan breast of decent size I think gives about 500-ish calories. Three pies, each at 300+ a pop, from 0.5 Kg of Ptarmigan. It's a pretty good return.
FYI, in Broken railroad, there is a recipe card with a great recipe on it... worth looking for it.. i won't spoil the location on you but its worth the look see.... cheers! ps.. there is also a recipe card in one of the 9 prepper caches... :)
I was surprised by how close I could get to the Ptarmigan without spooking them. Of course I had archery level 5 so I could crouch & shoot, but even without that little benefit you can get a lot closer than Zak did here. Stones will spook them but arrows don't seem to be as frightening. Which I think is fair for game balance. Early game it will be hard to grab enough to make the insulation or upgrade a bedroll, since you can only get one per flock with stones. As for the time to harvest Ptarmigan down, don't think of it as picking a single feather, because it's not. Down is all the little, insulating feathers underneath the flight assisting feathers. They are very small, quite delicate, and challenging to pull without ruining them. Thirty minutes for each unit feels punishing, but given the bonuses they offer, it's still a fair trade.
Unrelated, but I was coming back from forlorn to mystery lake, and I was going back to trappers bc that's where my base is, and when I ran past the rocks nearby I ran headfirst into the moose 😢
It would be interesting if they added a system where, like in real life, you warm yourself up when moving your body, as in: running, chopping wood, climbing a rope, etc. It could be a condition, like 'well fed', that would grant you a +2C bonus, like 'cold fusion' does, but it would only last while you perform said action and lets say for 15 seconds after it ends. Kind of like the acorn coffee and fire-hardened arrows are light versions of the actual coffee and arrows, but are much easier to get. This way you could use those actions to burn some energy and calories and turn them into heat for when you need it, and it would also make running in general more useful. It would also let you perform some of these actions without having to use a torch to keep yourself warm, or on top of using a torch, for when it's really cold and you're trying to get some timber and then run back to a cave before you freeze to death. Or we could just make it a mod.
The down-lined bedroll weighs 1.1kg and has 8-degrees of effective heat at 100% condition. It takes 3 cloth and 5 ptarmigan feathers to repair. In my opinion, a viable alternative to the bearskin bedroll, as I don't find the extra 3.5-degrees of warmth matters in most situations. Grain of salt perhaps, as my max achievement in TLD is just getting the 500-days on Voyager, so maybe the warmth delta matters more on Loper or Stalker. YMMV.
I skipped some episodes to see you doing new DLC content! I have mixed feelings about cooking system. I mean, it's a great addition, but I really hoped for an option to just freestyle a stew out of anything you have or something like that. That's probably what a person would do irl, just make a soup out of whatever they have. I also think it's fair it takes a while to take feathers, but I think you should be able to level this up and do it faster with practice. Thanks for the content Zak!

They also need a more challenging mode harder then interloper, because with all the weight increase options it makes gear selection not as important, with the new cooking way too easy to get to cooking 5 (rose hip pie) and beach combing it makes a lot of things too easy.

@@soap6366 just found that out for myself. didnt realise how high my cooking level was when I tried it but now I've started a new run, I can't even make rabbit pies. you live and learn
This game was great and simple to play. Now it has become like other ones too much crafting
Instead of adding all this cooking items , probably they should have add tools to build your own cabin
Have Will and Astrid repopulate Great Bear
It will be nice if they add a new difficulty where there’s no buildings or caves start from scratch built your own shelter
They also need a more challenging mode harder then interloper, because with all the weight increase options it makes gear selection not as important, with the new cooking way too easy to get to cooking 5 (rose hip pie) and beach combing it makes a lot of things too easy.
"there's too much crafting now"
"... but I want to be able to build entire houses"
how can you hold these two beliefs simultaneously when they are conflicting statements
@@joshualukereynolds You can always just ignore the new cooking options, as well as crafting items if you choose to.
@@MaryGatdula yes true, im not sure if they take spawn spots or have an additional table, just needs a little balancing tweak I think. I was resistant to it at first but I have enjoyed it more then expected.
Please tell me plucking thos birds was rebalanced, cause 30 min for a single feather out of only four feathers... is B.S.
Now if it harvested all the feathers in that 30 min, gave you so much feather down, and only 4 or 5 feathers for arrows, i would compromise, thats reasonable
