Over-enunciation of the words can cause the lips to exaggerate and can be more difficult to read. Just speak like you normally do and it will be easier to understand. That is just my opinion with a lifelong experience in reading lips. In real life, people don't over exaggerate their lips. A slight or subtle exaggeration is fine, but not too much.
It would be a little easier if you just moved your lips like you would normally talk. It just looks like you making the words more extended. When I lip talk, I would try to move my mouth as if I was normally talking. No hate, just some advise.
I'm not necessarily deaf but I find it difficult to understand what people are saying. Even if someone is looking straight at me as they say something, I will not understand what they are saying often. When I watch UA-cam videos I MUST put captions on even if the volume is all the way up. I think it may be my ADD, but I may also be hard of hearing. I know ASL and I find myself doing it without even thinking when I communicate verbally sometimes. Does anybody else relate with me?
i have the same thing. an audiologist told me that i may have a short attention span and/or a problem with my auditory processing. i've been thinking to learn to read lips so i can train my brain to focus on speech more.
Hi Lee , I`ve had my hearing loss for about half a century now (poor working conditions)I`ve been fitted with many $K`s of different hearing aids . They don`t seem to work in the real world .I now use a number of different ways at understanding.Just as a blind person feels their world through their finger tips to a heightened degree , hearing loss is compensated for by practised observation of many diverse things (we should be better listeners than speakers)It can have its down side as I can tell by someones figgity body language their becoming uncomfortable at being "studied"Then it`s time to move on .But that said , the best thing whether face to face or ph is repeat back the main points yourself .Words you may be having problems with are the similar sounding ones will be cause for many misunderstandings ,I hope this was even a small help .
Yes, I am a Speech Language Pathologist or Speech Therapist. I created this video for one of my students who is Deaf to practice lip reading skills at home. I also gave him a paper version of the words so that he could chose which words were said. If you would like the list in a document, please visit my website in the description. There you have access to a few of the homework assignments that I give my students. Hope this helps!
Hey , I am not deaf but just I wanted to learn lip-reading so that I can understand without even listening with the help of your video , I not only was able to lip read but also understand sign language . ~ Thankyou
@Michelle Davidson My job is very loud and over the first year and a half I have lost much of my hearing, at work it is impossible to hear at all without screaming and I think that learning to better lip read will help me better communicate with coworkers as well as my family and friends at home. I fear one day I’ll need hearing aids but I’m thankful to have found your videos this early on. I’ve watched only a few thus far and feel as I have learned so much in such short time, you are an amazing teacher and wonderful person for creating these videos for one of your students and sharing this with others who may be struggling as well. Thank you very much
Me too! I missed 1. I don't have a disability, but when we came to the U.S. from Europe, I didn't speak English. Kids at school would make fun of me, and I decided that I'll learn English so well that nobody would question whether or not I was born here. To this day, many of my friends have no clue that I wasn't born in the US. I would tape movies, learn what they've said in each scene, then rewind it and turn down the volume. I nailed it every time 😁 ahhh the good o'l days 😅
Thank You. I have tinnitus coupled with a hearing loss. Up until now, I thought I would go through the rest of my life shaking my head and smiling a lot to avoid asking people to repeat themselves.
Nina B that's the issue people have with lipreading and why its exhausting for a deaf person to lip read, only 30% of English can be solely read on the lips. Because most of it is the letters that are identical or are too close to tell the difference in a casual and regular speaking pace. The other part of lip reading has to do with facial expressions and context, along with hidden parts of lipreading, such as the nasal muscles, certain tongue movement etc. Most people don't understand this so they expect a deaf person to somehow magically fluently lipread and for them not to have to slow down or have to move to a less distracting situation, or to stop their habit of covering their mouth, or to repeat themselves when asked. A deaf person is still human, they can't read your mind or have xray vision to see which muscles are contracting below the skin. A lot goes into lipreading, not just their lips.
learning how to lipread for something I'm involved in, this is quite helpful, thank you. I got most of them right with the options, but it was much more difficult when i tried to do the review without using the options, very fun.
This has always fascinated me. I'm not deaf but my hearing is slowly deteriorating from playing the decks years ago. Would love to be able to sign and lip read as it is a universal language. What upsets me now with this COVID hoax is how deaf people are managing in shops and public with people wearing masks. It must be a fkn nightmare. I have not heard one leader or official mention this yet all government announcements on telly have a person signing. Well that only works for telly as I'm yet to go to a shop and see a person signing beside the cashier register for the deaf. I can't imagine how hard this must be for deaf people. I pray for this world 🙏💜
I have difficulties understanding people when other people talk at the same time. I'm not looking to master it as a deaf person would, but just to supplement to what I hear. It will fill out the blanks.
anyone able to translate a video of person talking without sound? it was a special meeting and I had permission of person but the phone didn't record correctly.
Thx for this I think im losing hearing in my left ear so I started learning ASL but I know alot of people dont know it so I needed to learn how to read lips

Yeah, I kept mixing up m & b, s & th, and a & u.

Surprisingly, I got them all right. I'm motivated to learn this skill.
Who do you find the difference between the letters M, B, and P? They look the same

It's hard, believe me. I can't wait until the masks are gone for good.
