I saw this in theaters. I was so fucking pumped to see this film. My old man had played Wing Commander III, I had played all of them, and he asked me at the end "What the hell just happened?" and I couldn't answer him.
I'll forgive this movie for having "loud" ships. I mean, in Star Wars, the sound of the blaster that the Tie Fighter, X-wing, or the Millennium Falcon are iconic, as are the sound it's thrusters made. BUT, yes, the whole "be quiet, there's a destroyer hunting us" is asinine, and is a bad move on part of the movie.
What I won't forgive is capital ships moving in opposite directions sliding slowly past each other like they were freaking sailing ships when they're ostensibly traveling at thousands of miles per hour, and at such close distances that their crews could shoot spitballs at each other. Star Wars also did this and it drove me nuts there too.
@@graemesmith6721 hey at least when star wars does it it's so they can actually hit there targets here there just incompetant cause neither of there ships are built for this
I was extra and double of Freddie Prinze Jr. For a month of shooting in Luxembourg, Karyo was the coolest man on the set! It was a good personal advnenture, but yes the film is not good!
I just realized, I've also heard the name "kulrathi" from a recent indie video game developed by an independent programmer. It's called Stardrive, and the Kulrathi in it are a race of sentient Space Bears with a samurai theme. Great game overall!
Funny thing Spoony even Freddie Prinze Jr hated this film, and I quote: I can't stand Wing Commander. I can't watch one scene of that movie... I read the script and loved it. So did my buddy Matthew Lillard. We both got the parts. We went on location and they said, 'Here's the new script.' It was a piece of shit.
sad that spoony shut down his comments and we have to go to a russian mirror for this... but yeah what a sad film. I remember seeing it in theaters with my brother when we were maybe 13 and 11, having loved the PC games for so long...Needless to say we were very, very disappointed. Even at that age, we knew it was total shit. Looking back, it's one of those movies you should of gotten a refund for, just out of principle.
Part of the problem is the games didn't need a movie version. They were already movies. It didn't help that they didn't have nearly the budget to do what they wanted to do, the casting was abysmal and one of the most important plot elements (a human traitor, you know, the plot point that would explain why everyone keeps suspecting Blair of being a traitor) was cut out for no apparent reason leaving the plot a complete mess. Let's not even get started on the Pilgrim crap that comes completely out of left field and seems to exist only to make it more like Star Wars. Even worse the art design is inferior to a game from 1990. Then there's just the basic polish problems like all of the spelling errors (right down to the freaking iconic Tiger's Claw becoming the Tiger Claw). It's atrocious that the people working on this film cared so little and even more disconcerting considering Chris Roberts was in charge. It was very obvious he wasn't ready to take on a Hollywood gig and he let people walk all over him. Between this and not fighting hard enough for money to fix mistakes there's no other explanation. That orchestral soundtrack is sweet though. 1999 me was completely stoked for this movie and when I first saw it I had what I like to call "Star Wars Episode I syndrome" where I was in denial that it was bad. After my second viewing the disappointment finally set in. Though as a really generic B-grade sci-fi film it's not the worst thing ever. As a Wing Commander movie it falls flat on its face. And yet I still own it on VHS and DVD like the gigantic fanboy I am.
I'll now make the ultimate generic line: An Action Packed, Fast and Furious, No Holds Barred, Rollercoaster Thrill Ride. Actually if I DID see that on a movie poster, I'd remember it. Mainly for being desperate but I'd remember it.
16:12 Might actually be possible to measure vibration by a laser beam touching a surface through a vacuum. It's sci-fi. Well, Spoony is right in that sound doesn't carry through a vacuum. Roberts recently spoke out in a relatively recent interview that the abysmal failure of the Wing Commander movie was the result of a combination of his lack of experience at the time when it comes to making a movie (cuz apparently making a full motion picture in game & making an actual movie is two different ball games), as well as the lack of funding & support from the studio & the co-workers who worked with him. It was basically a really overly-ambitious project which wasn't given a lot of funding or time allowances by 20th Century Fox, & wasn't given a very competent film crew to support Roberts in his project. For example: One of the things that gave Wing Commander its appeal was that it was able to recreate the magic of the origional Star Wars. But when the movie was being released, it was around the same time as Star Wars; Phantom Menace. Roberts didn't know that Phantom Menace was going to be a blockbuster flop, so in order to differentiate his movie from the upcoming Star Wars film, he decided to go with a "WW2 in space" aesthetic, which in retrospect he admitted was a mistake. But I think that now that Roberts is back on the scene with a new game, & JJ Abrams is taking a shot for the new Star Wars movie, if Force Awakens & Star Citizen does well, I think that Roberts & Abrams should team up & give the Wing Commander movie a 2nd shot.
koyzish I just remembered that they had a TV show; Wing Commander Academy that I remembered watching as a kid; cuz that game was THAT successful. Now, no one remembers the series. None of the kids these days heard of it.
+C.S. K. Have you revisited the show again? It's not half bad for what it was, apparently the makers were also fans so it remained faithful to the game.
I guess there will only be one sure way to know how much of a hand JJ had any project...just look for lense flares, lense flares galore...if you see a big part of the movie containing that weird fetish JJ and Spielberg seem to share, then you know very well that JJ had a big hand into any project XD
SpeedyEric1 Could be. Just such a waste. He could be doing large roles in major movies. He's just such a really good actor, especially in bad guy roles but even when he's not. I recall one episode of the new "Outer Limits" he was in where he was playing a police detective investigating the ripper murders (ironic since he played the Ripper in "Time After Time") and he was great as just this detective trying to solve the murders. You kind of expected a twist where he was the killer or something but no he was just a guy. :)
To be fair, Spoony, with the exception of Origin FMV's, I can name one more that was by far and away another "rare exception" to the rule that all of them were bad. Star Wars: Jedi Knight.
anuvis raa Command & Conquer wasn't really an "interactive movie" type game and its briefing FMVs are nowhere close to being in the same league as the FMVs of the Wing Commander series. Pretty sure Spoony was referring to "Interactive Movie" games, where you could make decisions during the FMVs - Wing Commander was primarily a Space Sim, but you had to make important, game related decisions during the inbetween FMVs that affected both the story and the missions. I never really did bother much with "Interactive Movie" games, due to the sheer amount of CD ROMS you needed for them and because I preferred games where the graphics were hand-drawn (because it helps you escape the real world better, when it doesn't look like the real world), but my younger brother acquired Wing Commander IV and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least mildly impressed by the game.
Funny how things go in cycles sometimes; now Freddie Prinze Jr as been in a great sci-fi game series that I'm sure will be ruined by a film. Mass Effect, if you're wondering.
Lassi Kinnunen I consider the very concept flawed; Mass Effect has too much story to be crammed into a film, even if you only do one game at a time, and there are too many different ways to play the game so no matter which version of the story you pick you'll be pissing off the people who went the other way.
На телефоне не дает запустить, на телевизоре не отображается в списках. Но можно с телефона добавить в очередь просмотра на телевизоре. Так вот обманул систему. :)
In terms of storywriting and voice acting? Oh I wish. But really I'm just a normal player who criticize the guy and I don't really understand your point of the question.
For those of you wondering exactly why this movie crashed and burned despite having the same guy directing that directed the movies in the games, well simply put Chris Roberts had just gotten done pissing a lot of people off. You see, the last game with Origin, Wing Commander 4, as well as his games with his new studio Anvil named Free Lancer and Star Lancer he was making with money from Microsoft were ungodly expensive to make, took way too long to make, and were financial bombs. So when Chris Roberts was given the very short reigns on an even shorter leash to direct the Wing Commander movie, they weren't about to give him to the money to cast such valuable actors.
It's called "Gata Flora" syndrome, a term devolved in Argentina that basicly states "Cuando se la ponen grita, cuando se la sacan llora" which roughly translates to, when they put it in, it screams, when they pull out, it cries Simplily said, they just a bunch of assholes who don't know themselves what they want, and the script just wants a reason for everyone to be cruel to Blair and make us feel bad for him. Seriously I still can't get over it, is it me or assholes in spaces will always find a reason to hate on the poor rookie? XD
@@NekoSoren funnily enough there pilots there suppossed to fuck with eachother anyway so they coulda just messed with the new guy he gets them back later it's how it goes
Unfortunately, the Wing Commander series was the best thing Mark Hamill worked on post-Star-Wars. He just never got out of being typecasted. Hopefully, things will change when they have the new Star Wars come out.......but that's doubtful.
***** Yeah, but it's still not the same. It's not like he has a lead role in a big blockbuster movie by voicing the joker like the way he did as Luke Skywalker, or possibly as Col. Christopher Blair if the Wing Commander movie was done right.
Xenoforge78 Sadly, you are correct. Hamill decided to quit voicing the Joker, while he was still doing his A game, because he wanted to end it on a high note (which I can respect, but I'm sure a lot of fans are heartbroken over it, so it's still rather sad).
Действительно, в одном из моих роликов в котором материалы копирастов есть, написано в настройках: Syndication No, this video should not be available on mobile phones and TV. А в тех где нету, написано Syndication Everywhere.
Schwarzer Ritter I guess you could say it's slight irony that he started acting in a shitty Star Wars wannabe, and is now acting in a shitty star wars wannabe. Seriously though, he's still doing Shaggy's voice in the scooby doo cartoons.
It wasn't some supernatural gift it was simple evolution the pilgrims evolved to become sensitive to the anomalies in space same as how birds developed a natural compass
As for In the Name of the King, as far as movies go, it was not THAT bad, not as bad as people think. And, as far as Boll's movies go, it is actually ok. Seriously. Well, almost serious(ly).
+Ralph Wiggum It's a shame because the Tannen actor in the game sounds really off (while the Marty impersonator is amazing). I get he's pretty frustrated about how the role overshadowed his entire career though.
He was a lead actor in a blockbuster trilogy as one of the most memorable characters ever who's still loved 30 years later and will be loved for 30 more. He's done better than 99.99% of Hollywood actors.
I know this is a 7 year old comment but in case you are still curious most fighter pilots don't make their callsigns, they are given them by fellow pilots.
Fun fact; you can live in space for about 10 minutes without any suit or any protection. It'll hurt like hell and it's best to not hold your breathe, but it's doable.
gh0s7walk3r No cosmic radiation is actually fairly minor compared to what it takes to kill a man. You would instead though get burned (hence the 10 minute remark).
And I thought any of these actors will not have any redeemable careers. Yeah, that until I found out that Freddy Prince Jr. got a role in Mass Effect 3 as one of the least bit interesting characters of the whole series.

***** Great info. thanks.
Thanks, heres hope that Hollywood and its recent remake craze will lead to a movie deserving of the title Wing Commander.
koyzish I just remembered that they had a TV show; Wing Commander Academy that I remembered watching as a kid; cuz that game was THAT successful.
Jeeze why can't poor David Warner ever be in anything really good?
It could be because he had a really crappy agent who should have been fired.
RIP spoony
To be fair, Spoony, with the exception of Origin FMV's, I can name one more that was by far and away another "rare exception" to the rule that all of them were bad. Star Wars: Jedi Knight.
comand & conquer
anuvis raa
Command & Conquer wasn't really an "interactive movie" type game and its briefing FMVs are nowhere close to being in the same league as the FMVs of the Wing Commander series.
In that conseption i agree whit you
Funny how things go in cycles sometimes; now Freddie Prinze Jr as been in a great sci-fi game series that I'm sure will be ruined by a film. Mass Effect, if you're wondering.
***** He was. The Iron Bull as well.
Lassi Kinnunen I consider the very concept flawed; Mass Effect has too much story to be crammed into a film, even if you only do one game at a time, and there are too many different ways to play the game so no matter which version of the story you pick you'll be pissing off the people who went the other way.
+GriffinPilgrim He also voices Kanan in Star Wars Rebels. On screen he was a trainwreck but as a voice actor he's pretty damn good.
Christopher Blair He also married Sarah Michelle Geller, the jammy git.
My only issue with Wing Commander IV is that you can't actually join Talwyn
I'm ashamed to say that I've seen this in theatres.
I remember playing Wing Commander III on my PS1 back in the day, I almost had it beat....then the game crashed and I forgot to save
Just because it has 2/5 of the cast of Scooby-Doo doesn't mean it will be bad.
Gotta give credit where it's due. Matthew Lillard replicated Shaggy's body language perfectly.
Yeah, case in point: FPJ kicked ass as Kannan in Star Wars Rebels.
How can they get mad at Blair for sitting in the starfighter of Bossman, who by their own practice "doesn't exist"?
It's called "Gata Flora" syndrome, a term devolved in Argentina that basicly states "Cuando se la ponen grita, cuando se la sacan llora" which roughly translates to, when they put it in, it screams, when they pull out, it cries
Simplily said, they just a bunch of assholes who don't know themselves what they want, and the script just wants a reason for everyone to be cruel to Blair and make us feel bad for him. Seriously I still can't get over it, is it me or assholes in spaces will always find a reason to hate on the poor rookie? XD
NekoSoren oh...so feminists then.
kinda more like feminazis but yeah XD
@@NekoSoren funnily enough there pilots there suppossed to fuck with eachother anyway so they coulda just messed with the new guy he gets them back later it's how it goes
What's Spoony's best video?
Kanan Jarrus?
Unfortunately, the Wing Commander series was the best thing Mark Hamill worked on post-Star-Wars. He just never got out of being typecasted.
Hopefully, things will change when they have the new Star Wars come out.......but that's doubtful.
***** Yeah, but it's still not the same. It's not like he has a lead role in a big blockbuster movie by voicing the joker like the way he did as Luke Skywalker, or possibly as Col. Christopher Blair if the Wing Commander movie was done right.
***** He's not actually voicing Joker anymore. At least that's what I recall.
Xenoforge78
Sadly, you are correct. Hamill decided to quit voicing the Joker, while he was still doing his A game, because he wanted to end it on a high note (which I can respect, but I'm sure a lot of fans are heartbroken over it, so it's still rather sad).
Действительно, в одном из моих роликов в котором материалы копирастов есть, написано в настройках:

No, this video should not be available on mobile phones and TV.
А в тех где нету, написано Syndication
Everywhere.
Ironically, Freddie Jr. is now voicing a character in Star Wars Rebels.
A guy from a space epic is now acting in a space epic.
Pure irony.
Schwarzer Ritter I-It's something. I believe.
Schwarzer Ritter
I guess you could say it's slight irony that he started acting in a shitty Star Wars wannabe, and is now acting in a shitty star wars wannabe.
Seriously though, he's still doing Shaggy's voice in the scooby doo cartoons.
At least anything in Star Wars is better than this POS movie, and I love Rebels.
The Avatar Fuck Kanan Jarrus, Ahsoka Tano is a Better Character than Him.
It wasn't some supernatural gift it was simple evolution the pilgrims evolved to become sensitive to the anomalies in space same as how birds developed a natural compass
5:10It's times like this I wish I could read Russian...
Osterochse
Thank you for the clarification :3
As for In the Name of the King, as far as movies go, it was not THAT bad, not as bad as people think. And, as far as Boll's movies go, it is actually ok. Seriously. Well, almost serious(ly).
isn't it kinda silly to name your ship Tiger's Claw when fighting against space cats? Call it pitbull or whatever
More games need Biff from Back to the Future
+Ralph Wiggum It's a shame because the Tannen actor in the game sounds really off (while the Marty impersonator is amazing). I get he's pretty frustrated about how the role overshadowed his entire career though.
He was a lead actor in a blockbuster trilogy as one of the most memorable characters ever who's still loved 30 years later and will be loved for 30 more.
He's done better than 99.99% of Hollywood actors.
I should have known sooner, but I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt
Why would someone calls himself ''Maniac''?
Because Subtle was too smart a joke.
I know this is a 7 year old comment but in case you are still curious most fighter pilots don't make their callsigns, they are given them by fellow pilots.
Did you get a role in Mass Effect 3? No?
Fun fact; you can live in space for about 10 minutes without any suit or any protection. It'll hurt like hell and it's best to not hold your breathe, but it's doable.
wouldnt you get fatally irradiated by then?
gh0s7walk3r
No cosmic radiation is actually fairly minor compared to what it takes to kill a man. You would instead though get burned (hence the 10 minute remark).
And I thought any of these actors will not have any redeemable careers. Yeah, that until I found out that Freddy Prince Jr. got a role in Mass Effect 3 as one of the least bit interesting characters of the whole series.
