I like the implication that hackers are doing advanced calculus in their heads and not just repeatedly poking lines of code until one of them does something.
It's not advanced calculus. It's supposed to be a representation of the acquiring understanding of how a system works and thus finding flaws and the possibilities in it. It's pretty much similar to troubleshooting
This was a huge problem back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Programmer kids playing in the garage had a leg up on the corporate teachers. Until they folded and began to work for the overloads
The movie seems to inspired Watch Dogs, especially WD2. A group of weird friends who are against the authority with colorful post-punk aesthetic vibes and the hacking duel which reminds me of DedSec.
This basically a spiritual successor to Sneakers(1992). If Sneakers were lead by a bunch of old people, then this movie are lead by a bunch of youngster.
Sneakers was done by the same people who did Wargames (1983). Both films remain high water marks of accurate portrayals of hacking in films of their respective periods (early 80s and early-mid 90s)
For all the cheese when it comes to actual hacking, the description of the hacker ethos of the time is not far off. The "Hacker Manifesto" that the movie quotes in one place is 100% real, for example.
I remember in jr.high. all computers were mac. There wasnt much security. U can just loginto the networks and have full acess to even the teachers. Computer files. Think it was os 8 or 9

Now, I know a lot of y’all got computers at home, but these are *school property* people and I don’t wanna see any gum stuck to ‘em. … ‘Chapter 1: Designing Graphical Interface’”. First of all. What an amazingly hilarious and ridiculous sequence of lines that is. 😂😂 The anti-fur rally line gets me every time 💀💀 I also love how a substitute teacher is starting from Chapter 1 during the middle of the year 😂😂.
this movie does the hacking scenes a lot better than modern stuff which tries to keep it "realistic" showing someone with unauthorized access to interesting looking GUI programs is more fun to watch than someone running tmux and a bunch of probing tools
This is such a weird movie. You can tell they studied the culture because there are references throughout the film. All of the books they referenced were on any self respecting hacker's bookshelf but the actual hacking scenes (except for the social engineering scenes. Those were generally pretty realistic) and the bits where they try to make the hackers look like "the cool kids" are so wrong they're laughable.
The hacking scenes are pretty realistic as well. They just had to change the UI since the text was too small and too boring to watch. When Crash first meets Burn on the OTV system, you can see the original Unix command line and commands on top of the monitor but it's tiny, blurry, and boring looking so they did the graphical overlays to make it more fun to watch.
This was all predictive social programming. How do we test our technology? We create an entire culture of young, energetic kids who want to test the boundaries of our security and our overall computer systems. They didn't study the culture, they kind of created it with movies like these. They've done it repeatedly throughout history using movies, music, ect..

@@devildust1003 That just depends on the onboard NIC capabilities. Something that old, would probably max out at something around 1st generation DSL speeds (if you're lucky), probably much less tbh. We would need the make/model of the unit to be sure.
Okay, the biggest problems with subliminal conditioning are more than your casual Pavlov/Stamford Prison Experiment type, even, but even with the nicest of intentions previous sublimated traumas might interfere with the program like brain-landmines . For instance ,neuronal braindamage is quite often associated with memory loss because of issues like keloid scarring and diet related malnutrition might stunt healing times and efficacy. Because of that neuronal power transmissions slow down and sometimes completely reroute and things like memory pegs and even hypnosis make them impossible to recover. So i'd have advised against trauma induction in therapeutic context
The legend is about a bird with leprosy at the temple in Medinah: in the old days lots of people would take their lepers to church to give them their last rights , and a camp was set up outside they would symbolise with white flags. Like any disease it was used as a viral weapon both locally and in southern equatorial africa. And an outbreak in New Orleans ... Anyway it's said the local staff at the time (the late sixties) hated sick people and wanted to let more moneied customers in , so they made the disabled people hallucinate that there was a white dove in the church by the big grave, come down from the hills above, which is actually a rag covered in sweaty leprosy. Then they would wait to see who trapped the bird and ate it raw: that person they said was the guilty party. Suffice to say there aren't that many native birds in the desert regions
I remember playing around with sniffers and John the Ripper on a 486 at the time this movie went out... We laughed hard at it, pure garbage. The running zebra from Amiga Scala was cool tho.
I thought I heard about the bad guys in the movie treating hacking like a competitive video game. I mean, if I was facing off against some opponents in an online match, I might be all like, "Die dickweeds", as well. Still, is it true that the bad guys taunt the good guys like both sides are playing a video game than trying to destroy each other using computers, even though that's exactly what they're trying to do?
