Hey guys. Quick correction, at 12:36 the chart is incorrect. The data for 4080 and 5080 OC was flipped on the legend so please know that then frequencies are correct but the label is backwards. Sorry about that.
Well the one thing I'm happy is the 5090 is too expensive for scalpers to move I checked on ebay 🤣 hardly anyone is bidding on them
i was just gonna comment that, glad you already caught it
I was just about to post about the 4080 and 5080 miss label on the graph. 14:24
@@diamlierx idk about that, i luckily got one, but ALL 5080s and 5090s in my country were sold out in about 30sec
Jay, could you please do an updated video on how to properly overclock using MSI Afterburner (Or whatever else you would advise us to use)??? Thanks, looking forward to it!
Should have 24gb for that price
nvidia is a bit too greedy for that but 20gb should have been the bear minimum for this ''4k'' card.
The 5080 Super/Ti will have that, for a "small" increase in price, of course...
Absolutely, this should be at least slightly better than the 4090 and for the money they want it's honestly disgraceful. I was considering an upgrade given all the hype but I don't play games anywhere near as much as I used to and realistically it was just going be to see Cyberpunk in all it's glory because the 3080 struggles a bit in 4k. I hope their sales are a big disappointment and they get taught a lesson.
@@Tempestanif they make it
The Vram is a bit of a disappointment but whether you need it or not is a different story TBFH, Other than synthetic benchmarking it really doesn't help other than in some small standout cases, and that more has to do with low latency compression and such. Didn't we go through this multiple times with several cards where NVidia released higher Vram versions and they only at the time made a difference in games like Skyrim where VRAM became an issue for people stacking high texture mods? I think the 760-4GB was a card in question for this where the GPU isn't actually fast enough so it was very situational.
I can’t get excited for these cards when reviewers received more stock than what’s available to the public.
I tried to order a 5090 this morning and they were sold out in less than 5 minutes! This is gonna suck.
@@madrabbit9007 lol for me it was in seconds, not even 5 seconds and everything was sold out😭

Release a tiny amount of cards, so you can flaunt the 'sold out' label everywhere and market it as success.
I thought it was stupid that the first reviews were for the card few people even wanted, the RTX 5090. Not sure if these small batches are on purpose, because it's mostly the scalpers making the money on them
It's not to mark it as success, it's to sell a actual 5070 at a higher price
these cards are in ridiculous demand right now, AI workload ect
@@michaelbauers8800That’s how it always works. They gate the reviews to do the highest class card first. No need for conspiracies when that’s been the case in the past already 😂

The fact an overclocked 5080 still can't beat the 4090 is a disgrace.
4080 massively outperformed even the 3090ti.
This generations performance gains is atrocious.
Agreed, I was torn about selling my trusty 4090 in pursuit of the 5090, but with the inconsistent gains in performance and the pain of trying to get a new card rn, I think I’ll just stick with my current card

I waited 3 days everyone in line knew it wasnt gonna have good numbers. I was 42nd in line luckily my mc got 67 5090s. Also jay was there too
This leaves a lot of room for partner cards to release their “OC” versions with what looks like more generous gains than those cards typically offer.

I tested my MSI 5080 Vanguard launch edition and got these results without crashing, but with the new afterburner beta 5 version u can see GPU mV, atleast I can see it.
Tested in heaven as you did for 1 hour.
Ambient room temp: 22 degrees.
GPU Stock settings
~985-990 mV
Core clock: ~2700 mhz
Mem: 15001 mhz
Core temp: ~52 degrees
Fan speed automatic at 32% ~1076 RPM
Memory temp: ~61 degrees
OC/Optimised settings
~965-970 mV
Core clock: ~3100 mhz (locked at 970mV in curve optimiser with +400mhz)
Mem: 16001 mhz (+1000 mhz)
Core temp: ~57 degrees
Fan speed automatic at 32% ~1076 RPM
Mem temp: ~62 degrees
result ~10% faster and use alittle less mV but only ~5 degrees warmer is what I think a good optimization.
This card also allows to go higher Core clock with more mV but I'm happy with my optimization with less mV to the Core, happy to keep it under 60 degrees.

5080 Is for 3080 people wanting 4k. Seeing that there is more room to overclock is a big uplift raising the potential to a 15-25% gain on 4080 Super and matching the 4090 which you're lucky if you could get a used one for $1400 (plus a 1k-1200 watt PSU upgrade)
Only if the 3080 owners didn't learn a lesson. Which is: don't get 16G VRAM card in 2025 for such exorbitant amount of money... 4070 Super chokes in 4K Stalker 2 with 12G, 16G is soon going to be the same in AAA/ UE5 games.
Not everyone games in 4k though. I'm running a 3070ti with only 8gb vram and a 34" ultrawide which makes basically anything from the 4080S to 5070ti / 5080 a significant step up in memory + performance at 1440p.

It's what unfortunately happens when AMD isn't really competing and they just put brand spanking new GDDR7 on these cards.
I have had a 4090 for over two years and never had the urge to overclock it cause I was actually content with it when I bought it.
Nvidia needs to stop with the review embargos being so close to launch and give us a preorder option to just manufacture based on actual demand demand. They’d make more money that way
They make as many as they possibly can, and it's not nearly enough. They're not just underestimating the demand.
they sold OUT, the only way they can make more money is to make more cards or charge more...keep raising prices till you dont sell out on launch and then back down 10%....we sadly are lucky they didnt do that

No it doesn't put you into generational uplift because you are comparing it to a non overclocker 4080 super. Always compare oc to oc.
Better, look at V/F curves. You'd realise 4080 super is already at the saturation of the curve while 5080 is much lower. So 4080 super is clocked higher in factory settings, thats why you barely get any performance from OC it
Your statement would normally hold true if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of the 40 series cards sucked at OCing and were already close to their limit out of the box. So if your previous 40 series card couldn't really OC much but your 50 series card can OC a lot now, then that's just the situation we find ourselves in.
Definitely OC to OC. It doesn't matter if the 40 series had only 1% headroom or whatever. At least you'll see the max performance potential for each and also get an idea of the over all OC ability for each generation.

@ more like being clip farmers and baiters
I mean, getting 10+% out of an OC is pretty good nowadays considering most cards are basically at their limit already from the factory. Of course, one could argue that the 5080 should have just been clocked higher by default (which I agree with), but I've got a feeling Nvidia was saving that little trick for the potential 5080 Super (which will likely just be a 5080 that is clocked higher and has more VRAM).
This launch was planned and managed by Nvidia AI. What a trainwteck.
Nah, AI would have done much better...

It's incredible that if you scour the internet, this is the only positive mention to the RTX 5080. Partner models raising the prices in 3, 2...
framechasers did it first in video format. techpowerup did it on their review. Disappointment just generates more clicks
Frame Chasers was very positive.
There were still positive mentions in reviews about the 5080. It's just that it didn't meet a lot of the expectations that people had.
I understand the excitement for the big OC gains relative to the generational uplift. This is reinforced by the disappointing stock results of the 5090 and really the 5080, for which we waited a long time.
But in absolute, these results are still bad. They are still way too close to a 4080 super for comfort and below a 4090. These OC levels don't make the 5080 a good value proposition or even a good card really. Nvidia just made the 5080 irrelevant on purpose to push people towards the more expensive 5090 and we all know it. This should have been a 15 or 16k CUDA cores card. By giving it 10k, they hamstrung it from the get go. You're better off getting a second hand 4090 imo.
Maybe in 7-8 months we'll get a 5080 super with 15k CUDA cores and 24gb gddr7? But these should have been the specs at launch.
I don't want to be a downer but I just don't think Nvidia put a lot of effort in this generation. Clearly AI is all that matters to them now and GPU for gamers is an afterthought at best.
What we really need is for AMD and/or Intel to jump in with some innovation and challenge them on the top end.
They will make one and jack the price up another 400 to 500 dollars
temperature results are amazing though. 350W draw below 60°C? very impressive.

Second hand 4090 is still at around $2000 from what Im seeing which is absolutely disgusting. 5080 makes sense, as long as you pay for FE at msrp.

No matter how much you overclock it, it still won't beat a 4090. 50 series is such a let down, this is the first xx80 series that probably was not able to beat a previous flagship.
It's not meant to. It's meant to be an 80 level card with better software implementation for 30 series and older users. Only pedantic people and amd fanboys care about the 4090 comparison. Price per $ per fps isn't a real metric. Just click bait.

@@joshconfer209 "Price per fps isn't a real metric." Ah yes finally we've finally found the ultimate consoomer.
Brother you're not just drinking the green kool-aid you're drowning in it.
Whoever started, and maintained this idea that a 84 SM GPU was going to beat a 128 SM GPU... it was ridiculous from the beginning. I'd actually be curious to see benchmarks later on to see if the 5080 got fluffed a bit from all these software changes (reviewers and reviewer samples, or the non public drivers vs public drivers). Maybe they did compare them 1 to 1 perfectly, and maybe Nvidia knew how to squeeze the most out of one vs the other with their software. Who can say for sure. 5090 to 4090 scaled pretty predictably, so if anything the 5080 looks a bit better than it even should be. I don't think they even increased the L2 cache on the 5080, like they did the 5090.
@@joshconfer209 Historically the 80 level card of a new gen always beats the last gen 90/80Ti level card. This is not the case for the first time with the 5000 series.
I'm glad you're keeping Heaven around. 3DMarks benchmarks are fine and dandy but they'll crash at the tiniest hiccup on the card, which isn't super useful when doing fast and dirty OC'ing. Having to completely restart the benchmark software because you went 10mhz over stable makes things take way longer.
Rtx 5080 in Europe is €1850!!! And the cheapest 5090 is €3100!!! Convert that to USD. This is absolutely crazy.
West Europe*. And im not talking about FE prices..
I'm not gonna do homework given to me by a youtube comment.
ESPECIALLY a European one 😂
@@LT3Fluffy bro, the same in Ukraine here, 5080 is 2000$ loool, what a joke
Just Wait... I have a feeling the price will go down in 6/8 months
@ i will stick with my 4070ti for now, and maybe ubgrade in some summer time.
Jay. Keep doing what you do, and the team for that. 👏 do NOT change
what's the 4080 oc / 4080 super oc uplift? they weren't on the chart
Non-existent because the 4000 series cards are already OC'd out of the box. You will get the same power draw when OC'd to the max as the 5080 but with 2-4% perf gain which is basically non-existent compared to 5080's 10-15%. So, OC to OC, it's still 20-25% faster.
Jay, I really like your videos ! I do wish you would use a larger font on your graph labels because they're impossible to read at any sort of distance from the screen :/
Snagged a 5080 Zotac Gaming Solid OC today. Replacing 3080Ti FE.
How much of a difference is there? Is it noticeable? I have a similar card and have been thinking about upgrading too

Got a msi vanguard 5080 for my first ever pc build
Hey Jay. I got the 5080 supreme camping outside micro center and just over clocked it to 3600mhz and +450 on the memory and it beats the 4090 I have in all tests 🙂↕️
How does the 5080 oc'd compare to the 4090 oc'd?
@ so I have the 4090 rog strix oc and can’t add anymore oc to it. I got 5.8 fps more than the 4090 in heaven and 3 fps more on black myth wukong benchmark. I say don’t sleep on this card. If I could get a 5090 I would but this is definitely good for now by a lot.
Wow nice I m gonna try this on my astral 5080 oc wish me luck😅
@ lucky! They didn’t have any at the micro center I was waiting at but the suprim is also really nice. Also these cards run cold it’s wild.
MONSTER= 6-10%
Sorry Jay, but those 6-10% isn't "MONSTER" and it isn't "HUGE GAINS" either. Imagine you go to a store that advertise a MONSTER sale and the savings are 6-10%, now tell me you won't feel annoyed you even bother to get out of your car.
I mean, if we go with your analogy in today's world, the MONSTER sale most stores have on their products are them just decreasing the overpriced item down to the price it normally should be at MSRP. Lol.
Love the live bench test instead of just raw numbers, please more content like this! Thanks for testing!
7:20 So bascially give it more power and you get equivalent percentage in performance? Who knew!
This is basically Nvidias version of Intel 13th to 14th gen.
It's actually far better than Intel's 13th to 14th gen.
15:40 DAMN Jay coming in hot with the popular segments!
Nvidia was only planning to make enough for reviewers to get them. They never intended to actually put them in stores
Are you saying it’s a good deal?
So how is that flat earth society meeting going? Lots to talk about?
@@maxweinbach3996 no man I've been building computers since the 90s and I'm just sad to see the state of trying to buy hardware. It makes something I've enjoyed for years no longer fun.
My MSI 4080 Ventus 3x gets to 3000 MhZ on almost every title, some even above and its very stable, fluctuating 15 MhZ or at the most 30 MhZ. At 71C or less (21C room temp).
Would have been nice to be able to get one of these cards. I hate how you can never get one when they are released. How I miss the days when you could go to the store and buy what you wanted..
Welcome to the post Covid world......where companies realized they could create artificial scarcity far too easily and make even more profit with less product to sell.
My 5080 is happy with +420/+2000 (MSI Gaming Trio). I'll bet you can push it a lot further on the memory side. I end up with a Superposition 4k score of 29800 which is well within the 4090 territory.
I camped out at microcenter and was able to get one, but that’s my first and last time never again 😂
brother lemme buy your old card
Congrats. Perseverance paid out. Sure you may have overpaid for what it's worth, nonetheless you've successfully achieved your goal. Camping won't guarantee one after all.

hi jay, it was nice seeing you this morning! i got myself a 5080 and ill keep it until i am able to get a 5090 in stock
i plan to either sell it to someone for msrp (I hate scalpers) or just return it
That's still not enough! Moving from 3080 to 4080 was like 40% uplift, now it's 10% + 10% if you overclock it. Nope. Hell no.
From 3080ti to 5080 over +50 percent while being cheaper, its not a bad deal either.
3080 to 4080 was a whole ass node shrink. There was probably very little actual performance gained from architectural improvements. Almost all of it came from the node shrink. Nvidia can't get a node shrink now becuase Apple has booked literally all of the 3nm capacity in the entire world. Samsung and Intel can produce tiny 3nm chips at small scale, but only TSMC can produce them at a relevant scale, all of which has been booked by Apple.
Tick-tock models work like this. The under the hood changes on the 5000 series were probably designed and optimized for the next generation of cards, which will have a node shrink. It will be a massive uplift. Probably at least matching Turing->Ampere (RTX 2000->RTX 3000), but more likely on Maxwell->Pascal (GTX 900-> GTX 1000) levels.
You do realize that the 30 series went from a 8nm, poor Samsung node to a 4nm, superior TSMC node right? You were NEVER going to get those kinds of gains going from the 40 to the 50 series when they're on the EXACT same 4nm node. I swear, most of the idiots bitching about these cards don't understand the first damn thing about how any of this works.
Only buy a GPU that is 100% faster than the one you got. These graphic cards are getting too expensive.
This card makes the 4080 look good and the 4080 wasn't a good card for the money
fun fact. In Poland on launch there was not a single 5090 available nowhere, cant even order and prepay it on proshop one of main eu distributors for nvidia. RTX 5090 ZERO EDITION
Fun fact. U are lying. I saw around 20 sold 5090 Astral Asus, 5-10 TUF, 2-5 Suprim. Around 50 cards were sold.
The Same in Romania, not a single rtx 5090 and rtx 5080 is 1500 euro☠️
There's one listed by a scalper rn for 20 k pln.... It's about 5k$ bruh wtf 😆
In Australia it was only select cards available for preorder and that's it. Now you can't preorder any anywhere
Jay I’d love to see a reasonable overclock on a reasonable fan curve!
# Historical Comparison: The Shift in Pricing vs. Performance
A look at previous generations shows how the mid-tier (xx70) cards used to offer a **better balance of performance and cost relative to the top-tier (Titan/xx90) models:**
|GPU|% of Top-Tier Cores|% of Top-Tier Performance|% of Top-Tier Price|
|:-|:-|:-|:-|
|**GTX 770**|53%|70%|40%|
|**GTX 970**|54%|74%|33%|
|**GTX 1070**|50%|69%|32%|
|**RTX 2070**|50%|56%|20%|
|**RTX 3070**|55%|58%|25%|
|**RTX 5080**|49%|65%|50%|
The trend is clear: **higher prices for less relative performance.** The RTX 5080 is not following the value structure of past xx70 and xx80 cards, making it a poor deal - or more directly: A SCAM.
Anyone with any modicum of common sense could see that the 5080 is basically what the xx70 class cards have always been previously. Not saying that it's okay, just that it's what we now get from Nvidia because they have zero competition in the GPU space. If you want the big performance gains, Nvidia now says you need to shell out for the xx90 class card or GTFO.
I'm upgrading from GTX960M to probably a RTX 5070 Ti. Can’t wait to retire my potato.
5070 Ti mark my words will be $1500k. The 4070 ti super is already selling for $1100+
Jay I think your chart at the 14:19 mark is off. You have the 5080 listed twice so we don’t know which one is stock or over clocked and you have 4080 as the yellow line hitting the 3.1ghz but you say it’s the 5080? All sorts of confusion
I'm no GPU guru but does this mean that we might expect quite a large improvement for let's say a 5080Ti or Super? Have Nvidia brought out the sandbags for the Vanilla version?
Overclocked by a professional, still slower than the 4090. The 5080 will remain a joke. Even if it is a high performance gpu.
coping
Expecting a massive performance gain when the 50 series is on the same node as the 40 series just goes to show how dumb people like you really are. Anyone with a shred of common sense knew the performance uplift this gen was going to be modest at best as soon as we knew the specs of the cards.
@@mriguy7989 did you get a 5080 or something? I find it funny that people like you who make your argument about production nodes usually haven't even seen the inside of a cleanroom. So your response is both uncivilized and also quite funny.

@@花XOI That's exactly what Newegg did here in the US. I got notifications later in the day for MSI cards on Newegg and immediately tried to add multiple different ones on different tabs to hopefully get at least one, and when one of them successfully went through, all of the others failed because their system detected that I had already bought one. It literally popped up with a message that said "sorry but you are limited to only one purchase of this nature right now due to the high demand for these items". And it continued to say that every time I tried to buy another one (was doing it just to see if it would keep me from doing so). So props to them for at least doing that.

Even before these OC results, it was already a 200% guarantee that there will be a 5080 ti, 5080 Super and/or 5080 Super ti. I'm expecting two more cards between the 5080 and 5090 to have been planned by Nvidia right from the start. Just looking at the gap between the cores and amount of VRAM is enough of an indication of that.
