  • Taking a look at the Ibanez J Custom RG8570Z (2018) in Rutile Black this week. The J Custom line offers Ibanez's "best of the best." Does it hold up when compared to the already impeccable quality of their Prestige line? Let's dive into a guitar that's been "on my list" since I was 17.

    Look closely at your fretboard positions, there are dots on them, they're just incorporated into the design.

    I've had my 8750z in Chrysocolla for about 6 months now. As you note the entire guitar is flawless, the frets are truly works of art. Over the past 5 years or so I've moved almost completely towards Ibanez except for my 2017 LP Standard HP and a MIM Strat. The RG shape just fits (recently traded the S1070 in my profile pic for a 77p) me and as I have gotten older (turn 50 in a few days) the necks are just more comfortable and easier to play for long periods of time. I've also found with a little tweaking on my amps I can get pretty much any sound I want (except for a tele sound) on my RGs, especially this one.
    The Tree of Life is actually different, much more ornate, on the J Custom than the JEM... definitely more inlays. Like you they threw me off at first but as I'm playing RGs most of the time I don't look much, when I do the dots work well for me now, it just took a few weeks to get use the the neck also being a work of art.
    The Edge Zero with the ZPE helps to stabilize the trem (can get one without the ZPE on Prestige models outside the US - they have to pay a fine to ship these to the US which is why they are only on the J Custom now, something to do with a patent infringement). You can make it so tight it won't go out of tune when you break a string.
    Congratulations on the guitar, it will continue to grow on you! The Black Rutile is dead sexy and as you note the quality is bar none!

      Awesome! Glad it works for you. It cramps me up a bit, but there wasn't a single flaw on this thing. Beautiful piece of work from Ibanez. And I thought the splits/cleans weren't as nasty as a lot of modern heavy rock/metal guitars. And you are right on the tree of life, I actually didn't know it was different from a Jem inlay until someone else mentioned it. Guess the J Custom is even more over the top :) Thanks for watching!

    I've had my J Custom for a couple of years. I agree the neck is wider than most. I played it as a main guitar for two months and now it feels natural. I still get a little lost when I switch back to my Fender and more on my Heritage H150(LP). I have found that I can get any tone I want out of it. The J Custom is a beast of a guitar. My Schecter Hell Raiser doesn't even compare. Those who want the ultimate super strat with floating trem will be very happy with it. The combination of mahogany and maple is great for tone and sustain. Great overview of this guitar.

    If you listen your various manufacturers you get wildly different results from their instruments and Ibanez definitely has a sound, loaded with pickups. I thought it was just the Universe, but every time you do an Ibanez I hear their distinct sound.
    Compared to others, it’s a compliment. Who wouldn’t want to have the alternate color(s) in their vocabulary?
    The 7 string effect, wide necks. They’re a moment to warm up to. Really fair price, on it. It won’t last long. I wanted the anniversary J Custom, and it was 2.5 times the price, Mahogany bodied.
    Thanks, as always for the detailed camera work and discussion. I’ve always wondered what that tremolo entailed and I was seriously impressed. Another fine review.

      In my experience most RG's are glassy like fenders, but there's also a 'squish'-factor to how the note attack feels/plays/sounds, particularly the basswood-bodied ones.
      So they don't twang much, instead they 'splat' the upper-mids' dynamics. Whereas Fenders tend more towards 'klang' and grind when pots are wide open.

  • @MK4vDubbin

    Great review Chris. Glad to see you finally review one of these and I agree with everything you said here. The customs I’ve handled have all had stunning craftsmanship, but unfortunately the necks are just too thin and flat, and the fretboard radius feels like playing a piece of lumber. I used to be a huge RG guy and miss them at times. They have some cool new offerings in the Prestige and J Custom lines and everyone I tried was a hard no for me. I’m fairly flexible on neck shapes but the super wizard is just absurd.
    That tree of life inlay is also a no go for me. It’s another aspect of the guitar that’s very impressive in terms of craftsmanship but it’s just too gaudy and confusing to play on. I’d honestly rather a blank fretboard with side dots because at least there’s nothing on the board to throw you off. Ibanez does put out a J Custom model once and a while with offset, standard or no dots but they’re pretty rare.

    The thing I like most about RGs is the sheer size of the lower cutaway - there's so much more space to get your fretting hand in that upper area than there is on a regular superstrat type guitar. I gravitate toward thin necks, but based on the RG550 reissues I've had the chance to pick up in stores, the Super Wizard is a little too thin even for me. I think Jackson necks hit the sweet spot as far as shreddy neck guitars go.

    I have the same guitar but in a royal blue. They are the top tier for Ibanez RG, and so they push the limits of what they are known for, mostly being thin necks.
    Just on the trem system, the adjustment wheel is not a stiffness adjuster. It is just an easier adjustment method than the two screws and a claw that most floyd rose guitars have. These however also have the zero point - that extra bar that touches the block. That extra bar and springs help pull the guitar back to "zero" which should be the in tune and level point of the trem system. The other setup that Ibanez mention is removal of that zero point bar, and setting the spring tension to balance with the strings for a full floating effect. How you have it set up now is more stable, but also means you cant do some trem movements like flutters. The main springs are usually backed off lighter when the stop bar is in though so the stop bar can do its job better.
    Anyway, great video, seen a few of yours now and they have all been great, so consider me subbed.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah I did a bit more reading on the trem. The entire thing is pretty cool engineering. I don't use floating systems much but thought this one seemed high quality. I did hear a couple complaints in the comments where some people preferred the old system as well. Thanks for watching!

    Great Review! I have the same opinion about the missing stainless steel frets and the locking tuners. For a guitar in this price range, it should be a standard. I also agree on the pickup choice. The Tone Zone is quite muddy and not really precise. My recommendation is a DiMarzio Breed Bridge (and Neck) in combination with a 250kOhm logarithmic volume potentiometer with 22pF capacitor in parallel. This gives you a very transparent and precise bridge pickup sound. I’m really thinking about getting me the current j.custom in Royal Sapphire Blue.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому

      Thanks Marc! They're super nice guitars, and I guess the insane fretwork on nickel would be hard to reproduce in stainless. Either way, I do really think the extra money isn't wasted here. So, years and years ago I bought a JEM, picking it over a J custom in the store. I always kind of wondered and slightly regretted that, but there really wasn't much difference between the Jem and the J-custom. (2006 though, so that might not compare at all anymore.)
    Another funny thing, I like the tree of life inlay, but I just noticed that the Jem has a different tree of life. I always thought it was the same one, but it quite different. The Jem one is certainly more readable.
    And coming from a classical guitar, (I think all of those have a radius of ∞, so that is absolutely flat. the 16"radius isn't flat in comparison) So I never had problem there. Weirdly enough, I do have a problem with their necks once you add in 7th string. An old carvin, which has a way thicker neck but a lower radius is way more comfortable to me.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому

      Yeah I didn't know they were different inlays either until someone on Discord told me. The Jem is a little easier to figure out, certainly. 4:20 dude..I know exactly what you mean and that’s what I was going to say. I’ve never been a fan of those thin necks, I’ve owned two s series Ibanez with the wizard necks for while, and I recently sold both of them because I could never get used to them. I know it’s ideal for a lot of people, and I understand why it could be ‘faster’, but I’ve always felt more comfortable with a chunkier neck, even for really fast long term playing. 15:11 That's called the Ibanez Zero Point System. It's purpose is to ensure the floating trem always returns to the same zero point after you whammy to help with your tuning stability. I used to have one in an Ibanez RG350DXZ. My personal opinion is that it isn't really necessary; the usual 2 spring setup in the back is plenty stable. You can easily remove the stop bar by loosening the strings and then two screws.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому

      Very cool. It's a neat but potentially over engineered system, but either way, I'd prefer a 510 or Contour lol. Or screw it, just give me a hardtail!

    • @ryanbarker3978
      @ryanbarker3978 4 роки тому

      @@TheGuitarPit The contour is definitely my favorite floating trem, too. I definitely respect being happiest with a hardtail but have been really pleasantly surprised with how much stability you get out of a contour and a good set of locking tuners.
      Like you said, the Ibanez stuff is ultimately over-engineered but that's also part of the fun of it. There are tons of little things about them that are neat - For example, my RG's edge tremolo variant had the saddles screws offset from the strings so you could make intonation adjustments without having the move the string out of the way.

    • @comment.highlighted
      @comment.highlighted 4 роки тому +1

      @Ryan Barker I’ve had many Ibanez guitars throughout the years (since the original 90’s RG550) and the Edge Zero w/ZPS3 on my RG4570Z is a Fantastic tremolo. It really helps stabilize tuning with multi-string bends as well because the tremolo is held in place. I mainly play hardtails (Les Pauls and PRS) and always disliked doing multi-string on Floyd Rose guitars. Once you have that ZPS3 balanced right, it does it’s job very well. I don’t think it’s over engineered once you understand it’s purpose and advantages 🙂

    I always play with my thumb in the middle of the neck (classical guitar style), never with my thumb on top or over. So a wide and thin neck is not problem at all, even with my smallish hands. Actually I usually prefer my 7 string Jackson because of it. Nice and wide but flat and thin.
    If you are used to placing your thumb over the top, man I have no idea how you would play a 7 or 8 string guitar.

    That inlay is nice to look at but I would be lost too. For whatever reason I've never been a fan of Ibanez guitars. Probably because I never played a really nice one and mostly just played cheaper ones starting out but they just never felt right to me. I also suffer with thin necks and Ibanez necks tend to be on the thinner side so that's another reason why they wouldn't work for me. Another great video!

    Great Video Chris! My guitarist brought over a Strandberg Metal 7 and a Blackat 7 string headless last night and was my first time trying the fanned frets in general. *How does the strandberg metal 6 compare to the Aristides 060?* I know they’re two very different guitars in a lot of respects, but I’m on the fence between the two. Did you feel a difference in ease of playability on one more than the other? The Strandberg was stupid comfortable and played itself practically it seems, and price point on reverb at $1,780 seems like a lot of guitar for the price... The Aristides Raw multiscale also appeals to me even though it’s a bit more in price... Do you think the Aristides (aesthetics aside) has more of an edge on the strandberg metal?

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому

      Thanks man. Those are both great options. I'd say the 060 feels more traditional, and feels a little more "premium." The Strandberg is awesome, but does feel a tad like a toy. That said, the 060 is TWICE as heavy. The Strandberg's weird and body shape is really appealing. I found myself occasionally getting bored of the weird neck shape, if I was in the mood to just strum some regular chords with my thumb over the top of the neck. The 060's neck is fairly flat, so you have to be into that sort of thing to enjoy playing one. I bought my last Strandberg Metal for $1300+shipping on Reverb, so I'd recommend going that route based on price alone. There is a pearl white one with a little ding for $1500 right now..maybe you can get them to budge on the price a little due to the ding. reverb.com/item/29566544-strandberg-boden-metal-6-pearl-white

      The Guitar Pit ok I see. I do enjoy thinner necks but not necessarily Ibanez Wizard flat. I currently own a EBMM JPXI 7 and I absolutely love the 20 inch radius and it being pretty flat but the gloss neck kills it for me. I also own a Jackson USA Juggernaut HT7 which I absolutely love but the neck profile is a bit too meaty and round on the shoulders to comfortably shred on the lower register especially. The Aristides I suppose is great but so are a lot of other guitars at their price point lol. The endless search continues.
      I really appreciate the insight! The strandberg was really comfortable but that’s an interesting point you make about the neck and being kind of bored with it. First impressions and honeymoon phases can be deceptive so I’ll spend a little bit more time with my guitarist’s strandberg before buying. I’ll check out the guy offering and see if he’ll budge though. Thanks for the content! Have no doubt your channel will continue to grow!

    RGs are an "occasional" guitar; for when I'm feeling fusion-y or am back in 80s/VH-land. And nothing else I've played does the "bendy single-note wail" quite like RGs do in the bridge pickup while overdriven. The super-thin 2nd & 4th-position coil sound is useful in recording: Back off the vol knob and it sounds like whispy air and not much more - nice for arrangements that call for a totally clean electric guitar swimming in lots of post-fx.
    Also a great ensemble player's touring axe due to tuning/neck stability - the bigger the band, the less you care that it's not really a proper Strat timbre. Of the ~dozen guitars I've had, the edge tremolo is the most stable, even after a cross-country shipping.

    Ok. Here's the deal with that trem. You can adjust it so it will stay in tune when you do double stop bends and when adjusted correctly it will stay in tune when you break a string. You sacrifice a looser feel but you still have a full floating tremolo and a stable platfom. You don't get these features with a standard Edge or Floyd Rose type trem. The thing I don't like about this system is that it won't flutter like a nice regular edge tremolo. But this feature is removable so it will futter and function like the old school edge trem. I do think most ibanez edge trems are superior to the Floyd Rose tremolo. Ibanez is famous for new innovations like this tremolo systen which is great but this system was designed by the same engineer that designed the Iron Cobra bass drum pedals for Tama drums. Also notice the noiseless tremolo springs. You don't find features like this from ANY other guitar companies,
    Bravo Ibanez.
    Btw. You should research the guitars you review and apparently purches before making and uploading a video reviewing the guitar. It's misleading to novice guitarists but big time kudos for playing some Opeth riffs.

      Noiseless tremolo springs you say? I've been hoping somebody mentions this phenomenon, I might have get this thing.. I saw one guy in a video duct tape the springs to stop the noise that was the first time I knew I wasn't crazy. I'm going to rabbit hole "noise tremolo strings"

The axions have a sick multi-purple burst with burned looking pickups, premiums have some really interesting patterns, while Prestiges and J Customs are mostly just solid colors (usually blue or black) with some wood grain or other texture. I feel like the cheapest models have the coolest looks, while the top end are kinda boring. AZs too, the made in Indonesia have creative paint while the made in Japan ones are just stuff like boomer tobacco burst.

    • @TheGuitarPit
      @TheGuitarPit  4 роки тому

      LOL Boomer burst. Yeah, the boomers have the buying power lol. I think that's not the whole story though. Now that lower end import guitars have all the flashy features like crazy paint, burl tops, abalone inlays...the works...the way high end guitars differentiate themselves is by being more subdued. That's probably a big reason for the relic fad as well. Different, premium, but not the typical stuff you see on $600 Korean/Indo guitars.
