The ONLY Meaningful Treatment for Mild Cognitive Impairment

  • The journal Neurology recently supplied us with a report that offered practitioners an update on suggested treatments for patients with mild cognitive impairment and declining brain health. Their goal is to help practitioners, like myself, understand the most viable treatment options for aiding our patients.
What's groundbreaking about this most recent edition of these guidelines is that they stand in stark contrast to the longstanding advice most doctors (and patients) receive. They, in fact, have found that none of the pharmaceutical interventions suggested for treating MCI have been effective. That's a massive revelation.
So what should we be doing instead? Let's discuss in today's video.

My wife was diagnosed with MCI and over the years, have not taken any medication and was told nothing can be done until she develops into dementia. We've tried supplements (Redimind, Swisse Focus, Souvenaid, etc.) and her condition has not deteriorated. She doesn't exercise and she's turning 67 in March. I hope we can find ways to either reverse her condition or defer it from developing into dementia. I've spent hours researching this and won't stop until I see something worth writing about in its cure.
Hospitals in Adelaide have good clinical studies which I've tapped into to help me help my love one. Hope I'll last long to see the light, God willing.

May ask why exercise hasn't been applied for her? I have difficulty remembering all the types of exercise I could do at home, I have difficulty with my will power and executive drive, too, in addition to bodily limitations. Scheduling my day is my worst! But I try to remember that I can do breathing exercises, relaxing exercises, stretching exercises, even in a sofa or on the bed, or sitting comfortably - though adapted to what I can do (notexactly what anybody else could). The things is that the brain needs oxygen, too - so warm blankets and open window are important for me. I walk Nordic Walking for very short lengths, regrettably not every day, but I feel the difference. It has been difficult enough to start new ways of thinking and establish new habits. Coming up with or realizing ideas, that's far easier than to organize and execute them in real life, that's where I need my hubby's support very much. He is elderly, like me, and we both feel the ever more limited energy and drive, but I much more so than he.
All the best wishes for finding ways to exercise in increasing baby-steps.

I have done very well while taking a dementia drug. My MCI diagnosis has not progressed to dementia almost 15 years after my diagnosis. I'm so happy that it is still MCI! I wonder if this study even looked at MCI patients like me who having been taking at least 1 of these meds & are doing well.

Would you be willing to do a series on chronic pain conditions? Specifically; Central Sensitization as an umbrella term for a variety of multi symptom disabling disorders? Apparently as many as 10% of the adult population suffers with high impact (disabling) chronic pain disorders snd there is still little that modern medicine can do for these folks.
    Thank you

My 78-year-old mother has been taking the new ish drug Namzaric. And had shown some improvement. I’m now thinking of talking to her neurologist and suggesting that we reduce to elimination, as this drug has some nasty side effects. Thoughts anyone?

Have you had a look at Dr Bredesen's ReCODE protocol? He has a book out called "The End of Alzheimer's".

The lifestyle plan we advocate in Grain Brain and Brain Maker could be a good choice: www.drperlmutter.com/eat/brain-maker-foods/

      DavidPerlmutterMD Hi Dr,
I just read your food list.
I've seen a few videos with people recommending Coconut oil for improved brain function ,I notice it's not on your list.
Do you know if it has any benefits you're aware of at the moment,I haven't seen any studies.
My 81 year old mother's short term memory has gone down hill in the last year and I was thinking of adding it to her diet somehow.
      Thanks
      Aleks from London

I would have to wonder if a Ketogenic diet with intermittant fasting might help. I certainly think the regular exercise is a must. I guess I should add, that since we know that Ketogenic diet and IF can reverse type 2 diabetes, and they are calling alzhiemer's the type 3 diabetes, that maybe this protocol would stave off the onset as long as possible.
