  • A conversation with participants at the 2018 SAND conference. It starts with Peter reflecting on his own journey, and recent shifts in his approach to consciousness - questioning what he thought he knew, hence the title. Then, responding to questions, he explores the common core of the world’s spiritual traditions, ways to step back from the individual self to our true nature, the value of that in facing the challenges in life, and the essence of prayer.

I wanna thank you, Peter Russell. You were one of the first speakers that I discovered in the beginning of my spiritual journey. Over 10 years ago. You break everything down so simplistically and express abstract spiritual concepts in very comforting and accessible ways. Your ideas on the primacy of consciousness really helped create a solid foundation for my personal spiritual growth. I've since had what I've only been able to define as a "spontaneous kundalini energy awakening". Back in 2012. It was one of the most powerful and amazing experiences of my life. It was essentially like a communion with god. Or the source of consciousness itself.
Keep doing what you're doing! It's had a huge impact on my life and others' aswell I'm sure.

The personal self is for survival. Ego shows no gratitude. Is there a way of seeing this differently? PAUSE. I loved every moment of the conversation.

Thank you so much for posting this. Your talk was so helpful in a practical sense. Elegant simplicity. The frequency of your voice is soothing too. Ego was sitting on my shoulder yammering in my ear. As soon as you began speaking it went silent and I was at peace again. "Is there another way of looking at this?" and gratitude as antidote for ego is so helpful. Who knew spirituality could be so down to earth.

Thanks. Yes, we can, and need to, bring spirituality down to earth. Make it reasonable in and accessible.

What would be your direction for people trying to find the purpose of their lives?
One of the aspects is to live a life of purpose and probably do it with passion. But I find that the idea of having a passion and a life of purpose is drilled into my head from every aspect of society. I believe I can pause and identify this - that finding out what I want to do with life is mired and diluted by what has been fed to my brain since I was a child. So I have inverted this question and tried asking what it not my passion and what can definitely not be my purpose and I always end up empty as I neither enjoy anything tremendously nor do I despise anything tremendously. I find great difficulty in finding out what profession/business/trade would bring me satisfaction. Keeping in mind that the state of being satisfied is my choice. I am satisfied with whatever I do now - but I often wonder if I could be doing something more to enrich my own self while understanding that consciousness itself is perfect and a part of it resides in me experiencing me as me.
Any tips for someone like me?
Its slightly laughable that I am nearing my forties and have no clue about where I am steering my life - and scary that soon my children will ask these questions and I will have to be honest with them and say I got no idea about anything. What do I know?

I agree that finding what brings us joy is important. And it seems you have. But rather than looking for something else that will bring you even more joy, you could try asking yourself how you could access more joy in what you have. Don't look for an answer. Just drop the question into your mind as a seed, and wait to see what may come.

Do you have another video expanding on your Pause method. it seems like it transcends the idea of coming to the present moment. or at least seeing the present moment differently. thank you

Hi Peter, if the chooser of my experience are thoughts i choose to follow and react to. and i am 100 percent with you on that. if we take those moments you speak about where thought is not trying to hook our attention. what is consciousness hooked on the no mind moments. what rules is consciousness operating on? operating on a premise, thoughts distracts us and take our attention away. do we know what is beyond noticing consciousness?

The experience of being conscious we call "I" - that which is always present, but not noticed when our attention is caught up in the world of thought and things, It doesn't have any operating principles of its own, it is simply that which us aware. When we notice it and explore it more deep, we find a deep sense of ease, comfort, peace of mind, and freedom, un perturbed by thinking mind. From here we find ourselves drawn into action, not by the ego-mind, but by compassion for others and the world
