This is insightful and sincere... priceless. I'm almost 60 and originally from the music and TV industry, so ageism is real for me. But, just remember that there are always those who are ageing right along with you. So, just remember to pivot your client base to that demographic and older. Your essence is your magnetism. Just let it be present in everything you do and those who resonate will be drawn to you. Those who aren't...no worries.
I would LOVE to chat with you about the ageism in Marketing. Spoken as a 41-year-old social media agency owner who started my agency with a 1st grader during the pandemic. :) My 30s were hard - working in the agency space in my early 30s with people who could burn the midnight oil, without kiddos (this was my kiddo was a toddler) and responding to emails from my boss at 11pm. The stories I've got... the hustle culture in agency settings was unreal. This was such a great episode. Love your perspective, all of this is SO relatable.❤

We are so fortunate to live in times where it is much easier for introverts, late owls and people with diagnoses to get a more suitable and non-stressful job. When I was a kid and went to school the only option for an introvert was to become an accountant.
9:30 for me it is the opposite. I am very extroverted IRL. But online, due to the perminance of everything, I feel very shy (and also cautious) with expressing myself. Talking to a camera, writing a comment even like this, is very uncomfortable for me. It makes me wonder, wether extroversion and introversion are fictional labels and in reality it is just a learnt habit. From what I know the creator of these words also does not believe in them.
The later points are sooo true! Authenticity and storytelling will always win, especially in an age were everything is fake/photoshoped/generated. Maybe this is the age where the introverts who can express themselves online have a comeback?
I feel like it’s incredibly hard to find POC introvert/ambiverted marketer/youtubers. Your content really helped me pursue social media marketing and now I work with two huge clients ☺️ As someone who also does content creation on IG mainly and eventually more of YT, i really appreciated this perspective! I’m also a first gen wealth builder trying to hopefully retire my family and take care of the people i love 💛🌸
Love this, thanks for sharing and expanding on your post. So much resonates. I think one thing I’ve learned from being an entrepreneur is that I realised my money mindset was that you had to work hard for money. My parents also had multiple jobs to make ends meet and I’ve worked since I was 11 so I could afford what my friends could. I’ve really had to try and slow down or my kids would grow up without me and I definitely don’t want that. It’s such a balance of wanting to be “successful” in business but realising I’m already succeeding in life regardless. I also lost my dad at 19 in similar circumstances so that weighs on me too - wanting to spend as much time with my kids as I can. Thanks for your honesty as always ❤

Love content like this, Latasha! And I like that you set boundaries about what you are willing to further discuss vs. not (i.e. your father). Social media can be a highlight reel for sure, but I def connect the most with creators who share both ups and downs. And omg I miss lockdown COVID because of how much $$ I saved. Sigh.

As an older woman i can say being uncomfortable in social situations is a real problem for me-but IF i let it be by over thinking things. I just go do it and try to be mentally prepared for the real possibility that there will be rejection-just because i am old! But i can say i am so glad at my job i work with many young people and how great they are! They really dont over think things for the most part and how much more care free they are and really its a good mental health practice! Dont worry! Simplify your life! Great video as always! Looks like by the comments left your viewers really related to these topics!

I resonate with you laughing at abandoned! Its not actually funny but it's also like... you can't make this stuff up. It sounds so EXTRA like "I was abandoned by a parent..." but its also true. I had to jump in and validate the giggle because some of my girlfriends and I (who don't have/know our dads) laugh hysterically about it from time to time. We're working through it.
I always admire how transpaent you are on in a digital world where all people want to do is share the "highlights." You deserve everyone of your flowers for achieving all that you have and maintaining consistency when no one was able to show you what you do looked like as it was all new. I have learnt so much from you over the years and the things I hold dear to is your unwillingness to compromise on our work ethic and share your reasoning on why you or do not do things. You do not need to provide justification around these things but appreciate you doing so as it helps me to questions my intentions when I do things. Wishing you continued success, peace and growth in all that you do
Latasha, I love everything about this. It resonated with me on so many levels - anxiety, ageism, generational wealth, etc. I'm literally talking to my laptop "preach" and "go on". Unexpectedly (for me), what riled me up the most was the naysayer type of people on social media who are going to come at you regardless what you say. They're not saying "no" necessarily but they're finding new ways to be critical of people whose content doesn't match their own. I've been following you for a year or so - maybe more, and what I like about you (and I know you weren't fishing for this, I'm just giving it) is that you have a truly nice balance of business/expert/experience advice, lifestyle, and conversations with other people within the industry and in all of those you manage to infuse a level of vulnerability I just don't see often. I struggle with these issues too-- and based on the comments that are here right now, what you're saying is striking a chord with many. Keep showing up!

Coming back to this a few weeks later after some thought around girlbossing/hustle culture and the newest trends to "get yourself out of the stress cycle." (A talk I went to recently said that "selfcare" will be the zeitgeist of the 2020s). Like I'm not "grinding" because I want to, I'm living like this because I have bills to pay and would like to buy a house and have a decent savings and be able to retire AND be able to survive a personal emergency...My parents are in their 60's and are just truly realizing that they maybe didn't take the right steps to be able to retire. I know that I'm just reiterating what you said, but dang it is annoying to me lol! I went to high school in a low-income area and I was speaking to some students last week about career paths and professional experience at a career exploration day, and I stole "first generational wealth builder" while talking to them. I wanted to be transparent I'm currently working multiple jobs to be able to afford to live and work in the area that we live in and while many others may be only talking about a single career they have today, I would venture a guess that most of them have multiple streams of income.

Loved this vibe and style of episode! On the girlboss / self-care thing, I don't know. I've been that hustling, juggling school and 2 jobs person out of necessity. But sometimes you literally can't do it anymore, especially if you're disabled/have chronic illness. And you do have to prioritize self-care above income when you are unable to work. I had to do so and go on government assistance (disability) which I'm still on while doing my biz. I think there's definitely a place for both hustling and slowing down, but in my experience, the self-care was necessary to be able to do that kind of work again. (But I am very lucky to have disability supporting me, for sure, as well!) Again, loved the video.
YES! ❤ Having chronic illness/disabilities does not fall under the "privilege" or "choice" category of course. I'm talking about the people who point fingers at those who work a lot or are financially ambitious because they have nothing to fall back on.

Love love love. I relate on some points and don't on others, which makes sense because we've lived different lives. But the tension between the perfection/aspiration of social media and the reality of life as an introvert or someone otherwise negatively impacted by experiences or circumstance is very real. Attachment styles really can pull back the curtain on so many unconscious ways we live our lives,, plus it's an absolutely fascinating aspect of personalities and why we are the way we are. The problem I'm anticipating is, and having anxiety over, is when I go to interview potential social media managers, how are they going to measure up to you? You would be the perfect person to work with, and I've only watched a couple of your videos. :)
OMG you could talk MORE if you wanted to. I always love hearing whatever you want to talk about. You're an interesting and nuanced person whose experience informs what you discuss and that's why I follow you.
And that feeling of being forgotten post-lockdown is REAL, ugh. I'm actually sad at how quickly social expectations went right back to the way they were.
And as someone in her early 40s I agree with you about the ageism and I'm sorry people were irritating about it. It makes me SO angry when people older than me scoff at my own experiences of ageing. It's invalidating. You can't undo your own reality because someone else is further along in theirs, you know?

I think the ageism is kinda funny because you wouldn’t think people would watch you when you’re older but I recently been following 50 yr olds on instagram and I love ‘em I didn’t expect it either but I think anyone can do so many things at any age 😇
I agree! Just had a convo with someone about that. I think I’m just in a growing pain period, where young people still watch me and say rude things sometimes and some older people (the age group I love working with) sometimes still looks at me like some “unserious internet girl”. I’m not sure if that makes sense. Goal: lean into the people who do get me and focus less on the weird vibes!
