Dolphins are likely the most intelligent animals on our planet. They use complex sounds to communicate in ways we’re only beginning to understand. But noise pollution from tourist boats is destroying their acoustic habitat. We went to Portugal's Algarve coast to learn more about the secret language of dolphins and help protect them.

Thanks for being a supporter of our work! 💚🙏 We genuinely appreciate your contribution! 💚
Mapping the ocean floors via explosions is a huge killer as well.
Wonder why we see so many dead dolphins and other species stranded on beaches, that must be the reason for their deaths.
It’s been shown that animals near sonar pulses will sometimes beach themselves to escape the noise. Sometimes it causes hemorrhaging as well
@@loooongneck exactly, that is why I wrote that 6 months ago. Look at the over 100 whales stranded this week on the shores in Australia, so I wonder once again, what are they searching for in that region? When will the greed of these oil companies/extraction industries change their deadly actions on the environment? As long as they get financing from these horrible banks, not so soon is what I sadly think.
Wonderful project! Thank you guys for doing this for the dolphins. You'll also be helping the other underwater critters, too. Fish talk to one another in frequencies we can't hear and loud boats make it hard for them to hear each other. Making a nice, quiet spot for everyone (meaning the animals) is so nice! I hope the quiet spaces can expand.
And hopefully people can make quieter boats in the future somehow.
Thanks for your support! 🙏 Underwater noise pollution indeed affects a wide range of marine life, so the positive ripple effects can be huge! Whales, fish, turtles, even the plankton - all of them will benefit from reduced noise pollution. We really look forward to the learnings of the project. 🐬💚
"chhhhh chhhhhhh chhhh": that's dolphin for "great vid"
But seriously, thank you for this amazing video and especially all the fun facts. I didn't know dolphins stayed in touch with dozens of school friends. 💙
Indeed! 🐬 It's lovely to hear that our mission video provided you with engaging insights about Dolphins. 💚 Thanks for your continuous support! 💚🐬🙏
Loved the underwater footage! It's a fantastic way to see dolphins in their natural habitat! 🐬🐬
The experience was indeed unforgettable! 🐬 Thanks for your support. 💚
It is quite sad that overtourism and the chasing of profits is damaging and hurting theese beautifull (sometimes kinda scary) creatures
you guys are doing gods work
It is! 😪 Thanks for your support 💚
Yes, it's insane how too much tourism is hurting more than helping.
So long and thanks for all the fish. --🐬🐬

The lab mice, who have been studying us humans, have decided; most of us are too stupid to be saved.
Awesome. Dolphins are so beautiful
Indeed they are! 🐬 Thanks for your support! 💚
I hope, the Dolphin 🐬 Speech can be Decoded in the Future. So may much more Human’s understand, that Animals aren’t just things, we can do with, what we want to.
Thanks for the feedback 💚 In the near future, if humans can decode Dolpin's sophisticated speech, it will certainly help us to better understand these most intelligent and mysterious species. 🐬🌊
Wow, dolphins are so crazy 😮❤

@@planet-wild no problem. I look forward to your follow up in 6-12 months.
It makes me sad to see that Human's actions arent been considered carefully for what consequences might happen when we touch nature.
Land,Sea and Air
It can impact it all and thus can lead to extinction, ecological stress and global warming.
Instead of constantly companing and protesting is just a waist of time, you either do it yourself with data on how to help or join in on Planet Wild like myself.
I almost cant do much outside of my Job to give back nature for what nature gives us,but with Planet Wild I feel like I can give back, smaller or bigger.

Wow! I didn’t know boats could affect dolphins so greatly. Thank you for helping protect our oceans, and our forests.
Thanks for the heartwarming support and feedback! 💚 Glad to know our mission resonates with you 💚💙🐬
It's quite shocking that the Portuguese government allows so many boats to go out and then chase them! Where I live it's illegal to approach dolphins and whales and I'm feeling pretty relieved about that after watching the video! I can't help but think that tourists wouldn't contribute to the problem if they were better educated so we should all share this info!
Yeah, unfortunately, there are many places where these activities are not regulated. 😔 Happy to hear that it’s not the case in your area - where is it, by the way? 😃 It’s always good to know good practices! 💪
We hope that with the data that Joana and her team collect, it will be easier to create more awareness among tourists and local authorities about the consequences of these activities, and advocate for change.🐬💚
They are so cute❤
Indeed, they are! 🐬💚

Macht richtig Spaß ein Teil davon zu sein ❤🐬
Vielen Dank für dein Feedback! 💚🐬
You missed to mention another thing that humans and dolphins have in common, dolphins also do drugs. They are gettin high on the poison of the pufferfish, wich is deadly for humans.
I think that is an amazing fun fact 😂
Apart from that, thanks for the amazing video 🙌
That’s an interesting fact indeed! Thanks for sharing. 😃
It’s true that there is scientific evidence suggesting that dolphins may engage in what could be considered recreational drug use involving pufferfish toxins, specifically tetrodotoxin. However, it's important to note that our understanding of this behavior is still limited, and more research is needed to determine the exact reasons why dolphins interact with pufferfish in this way and the effects it may have on them. Some scientists suggest it could be a form of self-medication for certain conditions. There are definitely still many things we don’t know about dolphins! 🐬
And thanks for the feedback and support! 🙏💚
Sometimes they look as if they're playing a ball game with the puffer fish.
Fascinating mission. Thanks for bringing these amazing creatures even closer to our heart. ❤
Thanks for your support and feedback! 💚 Glad that our missions resonate with you! 🙏🐬💙
No sabía que los delfines fueran tan inteligentes, me gustó saber eso, pero bueno, espero que sus videos lleguen a más gente y exitos

Amazing, and inspirational to see grass roots low tech solutions having such a positive impact. The world needs more people like you guys!
Thanks so much for acknowledging our efforts in our mission! Really happy to hear our mission resonates with you 💚
Hi. I have a graphic/marketing suggestion. I noticed that your owl vid is doing well. So I thought what if on this video thumbnail, instead of say ‘fixing noise pollution’, say ‘we help this guy’ and point to the dolphin instead. It’s more personal and not focusing on the problem but focusing more on the results. And we humans are empathetic to all beings. Helping 1 life can win our hearts.
Great work. Greetings from Ecuador!
Thanks for appreciating our efforts in our mission! 💙🐬
I hope we could help dolphins on Taiji, Japan :(
Thank you guys for informing us about this. This definitely makes one reconsider going on a future dolphin and whale watching tour.
I think the boat manufacturing industry would also have a great direct impact on change if new sound deadening technologies were incorporated.
Hi!
Why aren’t there quotas on how many boats can get out there each day ? I think halting people visits through boats may help a little.
Wow! I don't know dolphins are that smart! I mean, they have different cultures and even names!
Indeed! 💚 They are among the most intelligent and enigmatic sea creatures on the planet 🌊🐬
Wonderful!!!
The problem affects not only dolphins, but also other whales, especially orcas and beluga whales.
Thanks for doing this. 👏
We genuinely appreciate your support - these missions are only possible because we have supporters like yourself 🙏 💚
Thank you so much! I love dolphins too and I really want to know more about them so this team is definitely doing amazing work!
Thanks a bunch for appreciating our efforts in our mission! We happy you found your way to our channel 💚🙏
thank you for doing such important work
Thanks for the support! 💚
Maybe another first step could be to allow dolphin and wal watching with electronic motors, only - assuming they are less disturbing.
Maybe one day it is possible to have dedicated meeting areas. As far as I have heard dolphins and wales are pretty curious about humans. Wouldn’t it be great, meeting dolphins who are looking for meeting humans? (It is always allowed to dream, isn’t it? 😂)
The work you do is amazing!
Thanks for the supporting our efforts! 💚
Anyone else here from Thoughty2 after his reference? Planet Wild is cool!
Welcome to our channel; great to have you here 💚 😊
how much effect would come from using Electric boats with Toroidal propellers? Maybe more then Half the noise pollution
Certainly an interesting idea! 😊 It'll definitely help reduce noise pollution. 💙 Currently, it's still in the testing phase because scaling them up to mass production is a bit tricky with their complex design, which makes production expensive. 📈 But it's a promising step for marine life with less noise pollution. Keeping our fingers crossed for a bright future! 🤞🌊
I think I was or am a dolphin in another life lol. Beautiful entitys
Who knows, perhaps there might be deep connection there! 😃💙 Thanks for your continuous support! 🐬💙
Have a wonderful October ! An a great New Year's ! / / thanks
Thanks 💚🙏 We also wish you an awesome November and New Year 💚
Dolphins are the closest we get to Aliens, and shows how difficult it will be to communicate.
P.s. deciding whether we should stop destroying another animal based on whether WE think they are intelligent or not....
Great work!
Thanks for the support! 💙🐬
So,,, why do the dolphins come to the boats and cluster around the boat if the boats hurt them.
Sailboats shouldn't be a problem though.
Would be interesting to analyse the dolphin language with AI
Absolutely, an interesting idea to decode dolphin language using AI! 🐬💙
💚
💚🐬
How about using sails?
❤🎉
💙🐬
Have toroidal motors been promoted as a quieter more efficient option?
Certainly an interesting idea! 😊 It'll significantly help reduce noise pollution. However, scaling them up to mass production is a bit tricky with their complex design, and uniqueness for each engine/hull; which makes production expensive. But it's a promising step for marine life with less noise pollution. Keeping our fingers crossed for a bright future! 🤞🌊
🎤🐬❤️
💚🙏🐬
I would love to know how A.I. could help to understand there language maybe even better 😊
Can I come work for you guys. I’m a naturalist. I think I am made for conservation
@Thomas Brown Thanks for your interest and for reaching out to us! 💚 At the moment, we’re fortunate to have all the support we need. 🙏 If we do need more support in the future we’ll have you on our radar. 💚
Dolphin is only friendly towards human no other beings under water
yes dolphins are often nice but they can be very mean tol
Not as mean as humans..
Dolphins are going deaf, that's why we chase them in loud rib boats, instead of silent sail boats,... "here's your sign."
Gotta run ads in portugal.
If you run a non profit google gives you $10,000 a month free ad spend.
Do some guerilla advertisements as well like stickers and posters.
awareness is key.

Let us merge footage with AI to comprehend dolphin 🐬 communication better.
Comparing their speech with their actions in the footage might yield remarkable outcomes...
I think I was to late with this question under the last video, so I will ask it here again.
Wouldn't it have been better to release the young lynx in a region where she wasn't born to prevent inbreeding?
Great question! 🙌
In an ideal world - absolutely yes! Unfortunately, at the moment, the regulatory hurdles to transfer a wild lynx across state borders (which would be needed to get a lynx from the Harz population into any other population) are so high that this is currently not happening. A lot of bureaucracy would have to be changed to make this feasible, and we actually discussed that with Ole. The hope is to enable cross-state collaboration and exchanges in the future. 💚
Thank you for the answer.
Bureaucracy is a very understandable reason for something not being done in the most ideal way.
I wish you luck for the future.
@@jemensch Thanks! ☺
Would it be possible to insist on using sharrow props on dolphin watching boats.? They're much quieter
Certainly an interesting idea! 😊 It'll significantly help reduce noise pollution. 💙 However, unlike the Toroidal propellers, scaling them up to mass production is a bit tricky with their complex design, which makes production expensive. 📈 Furthermore, sharrow props are unique for each engine/hull. But it's a promising step for marine life with less noise pollution. Keeping our fingers crossed for a bright future! 🤞🌊
"... times larger than ..." is too ambiguous. Use "times so large as".
Sabine sent me
Welcome to our channel! 💚 Great to have you here 🤗💚
You don't have to convince me when it comes to providing sanctuary areas where dolphins and orca tend to hang out a lot. I believe that's part of our responsibility if we are to be good stewards of this planet.
(ツ) ☕☕(ツ)
@2:22 so to prevent dolphins from shouting at each other because of boat motors, you're going out to dolphin habitats in a boat ? ( not that I don't support helping dolphins, it just seems a little bit hypocritical)
We hear you, but since it’s essential to have the data to be able to advocate for their protection, it is a necessary/responsible thing to do.
Also, research boats tend to be way less intrusive and maintain a consistent and steady pace, while tourist boats can be noisier and more erratic in their movements, which puts additional stress on dolphins. 🐬
@@planet-wild yes, I know. It just seemed a little ironic
Didnt the usa just make it . illegall to try to communicate with Whales
❓❓❓WHAT🤨❓❓❓
Quick question. You're upset about the 150 boats going out 5 times a day for dolphin watching. I get it. I agree it is so, so bad for them. It upsets me as well, but aren't y'all doing the same thing as well when y'all are going out on some noise boat looking for 🐬🐬🐬 dolphins??? I know you have to for research, but aren't you all just doing the same thing that the touring boats are doing??? Unless the boat y'all have makes no noise🤨🤨🤨.
I understand the importance of limiting human presence, but outright *banning all* human activity except research? Not even just limiting how much recreational activity is allowed? That's extreme and anti-humanist. Even in Hawaii, their solution for limiting human activity seems more reasonable than this.
The bullies/rapists of the ocean
Let’s make everywhere like Antarctica unless you have a government stamp and millions of dollars you shouldn’t be able to enjoy…. whatever the rich people think we are messing up. If you listen closely it sounds like this is kind of an anti-human ruling but the important people will still be able to do what they want.
Thank you for doing this. I am involved with the marine clean up in South Africa.
w channel, love everything you guys are doing!!
