Few people alive today have been lucky enough to spot a European bison in the wild. They once roamed the European lowlands over vast distances, but have gone completely extinct in the wild 100 years ago.
Now conservationists are working to bring these majestic creatures back, who have a much more important role to play than we ever imagined.
We’re teaming up with wildlife pioneer ZTP from Poland to help restore Europe's population of “gentle giants''. And we’ll use modern day technology to increase our chances of success.

here the bison is a respected and beloved wild animal, along with storks. They are easily one of the tamest and most gentle animals you can see at the zoo.
I'm surprised the other bison weren't pissed, when you guys attached the tracking device to the females. Really shows how amazingly peaceful they are.
Yes! And also how social they are. The entire herd stayed there during the whole procedure, as they don't leave their herd members behind. So, they stayed and patiently waited till the tranquillised member was up and running again. 🤎
That's adorable, you can't often even usually get within sight of an American bison without them getting territorial! Your bison are also just sweeter looking, I love their big doe eyes and how they're just more graceful looking than our North American bison (who're like four-legged tanks.)
@@falcolf it's super interesting that you mention it, cause the American bison is the only reference that I had in my mind before and I was surprised in a similar way by the looks of the European one.
In a way, that's exactly what happens when species go extinct - we stop having the right picture.
Unfortunately, that is why the US Bison was so decimated. Hunters learned how to shoot a bison dead immediately and the rest of the herd didn't react, thereby leaving the rest of the herd vulnerable to mass killings. Our nation (US) had a shameful history in how we treated these majestic creatures. Fortunately, many Native American tribes have taken up their care and preservation throughout the western US.
@@planet-wild Perhaps you guys should link up with the elephant people in various parts of Africa and Asia? That behaviour is so like what they describe.
I was up in Alaska quite a few years ago, and did that tourist thing of visiting a bison 'sanctuary' or whatever it was. The sheer presence of these animals was overwhelming when they were close, when you can hear their breath. To think that was just a part of our ancient ancestor's daily life, gives that word a whole different meaning to this townie!
I am delighted to see the tremendous effort put forth by individuals and organizations in saving bisons. It is heartening to know that despite the challenges faced by these magnificent creatures, people are committed to their conservation. 💚

It should be mentioned that bisons were introduced to the Danish island Bornholm between Sweden and Poland like 10 years ago as well. Great video, just became a patron.

Along with my husband we spent many years in Canada's NWT. Bison were a way of life, and we learned to respect their ways. The Summers were especially hard for the animals because the myriad biting flies and other insects drove them mad. I learned to be very careful on river shores near bush, because it was not unusual for a bison to burst through the bush at top speed and rush into the river to cover itself with water. However, the insects "coned" and waited, so when the Bison lifted it's head to breathe, they pounced. The Bison used to wander through the village at will, and the locals disappeared fast. I was fortunate, they just stood at my fence and looked if I was gardening. I often was unaware of their presence for a while, because they were so quiet. They are magnificant creatures, and usually pretty quiet unless rutting or with calves, that's when we need to keep a very good distance away from them. I really enjoyed your programme and will be donating.

Brilliant!! I only recently found out that Europe had buffalo. The difference between European and North American bison isn't large, but it is quite visable. They are wonderful animals. Thanks for bringing them back.

in bison and horses female lead the herd but the male is dominant.
There's 2 hierarchies, woth different role.
same in lion where the territory is owned by the female but protected by the male (who help to kill large prey, but won't hunt most of the time because female are better at that, the male is too visible, too obvious and slower, but his strenght is necessary to take down large prey like buffaloes).
You forgot to mention the Romania bisons and the efforts to resettle them.
I doubt they have the self-reflection to actually have the thought, but being equipped with a tracker is probably sort of like being probed by space aliens - i.e. something completely beyond the comprehension of the creature, that can only be summed up as 'Well, that was weird!".

Wow. Love it! I love that you guys show what can be done to protect the animals and give everyone an opportunity to be part of it. I often felt a bit down and hopeless after I’ve watched a nature documentary and was wondering...and now what? But after watching your video I feel hopeful that I can actually do something against the destruction of environments and, sadly, very likely loss of many species. Can't wait to see more of your work!

Glad to see you are helping with restoration of the European bison. In Canada, where I live, we have mostly plains bison, in small numbers, but also Wood Bison in northern parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as in Alaska, USA. They live amongst trees, like your European Bison, and they are larger than the Plains Bison. Both breeds were almost extinct and only survived through the efforts of a few people who preserved small herds from hunting, back in the 1800s.

@@planet-wild I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and have frequently been to Banff National Park, a 90 minute drive west of here in the Rocky Mountains. There used to be a fenced in area near the town of Banff with buffalo in it. You could drive through to see them. That is gone, but a few years ago some buffalo were released in the wild in a more remote area of the park. They are closely monitored by Parks Canada staff. Currently there are buffalo in a fenced enclosure on the Stoney Reservation, just east of the Rocky Mountains, on Highway 1A. It is a rough road in, but we enjoy seeing the buffalo there. We've also camped in Elk Island National Park, a 30 minute drive east of Edmonton, Alberta. There are two large fenced areas of that park. North of the highway there are Plains Buffalo and Elk. In a separate enclosure south of the highway there are Wood Buffalo, which are larger than plains buffalo. I haven't been to areas in northern Canada and Alaska where Wood Buffalo run wild, although I have travelled to other part of the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. Close to Calgary there is a ranch with buffalo in a fenced enclosure and separate fenced areas for elk. We can drive there and stop to watch the animals. Wonderful to hear the elk bugling in the fall, and sometimes we see wild elk and deer nearby.
He is only a youtube celebrity. In fact, Polish scientists saved bison back in the day and are saving bison today. They do need any help from anybody.

so a strong warning is so important, even saying it a couple times would be awesome......and hopefully people will hear the warning and listen...........
But i do think it's important to have in these types of videos (because we all know, it takes only 1 to ruin a good thing) so imo a good sternly spoken well viewed warning spot in each mission video would be really good......and again ty for everything you and planet wild team and partners are doing to better this planet, our planet!!!

Yes, their natural predators are wolves and brown bears. While brown bears are extinct in Poland, wolves are still present in the country. 🐺🐻

@@planet-wildbrown bears aren’t extinct in Poland, they are rare and under protection, but nevertheless they aren’t extinct. I even encountered one hiking on Tatra mountains some years ago. Brown bear (ursus arctos) have a subspecies (ursus arctos arctos), and second one is in fact extinct in for 100 years or more in this region.
To be fair, even on polish wikipedia page about brown bear and it’s subspecies have the same name “niedzwiedz brunatny”.
Wolves hunt only old/sick/solitaire bisons, they are too smart to attack whole herd :D

@@planet-wild This bear near Lesko (SE Poland) was most probably just feeding on a corpse of a bison, not necessairly killing it, but there are places here where bears & bisons live at the same time here.

I hate this panic-mode in Germany as soon as an animal retuns to our landscape, that used to be there. There's wolves! SHOOT THEM! There a bison! SHOOT IT! There's a bear! SHOOT IT!
That's just so stupid and horrible. When predetors start munching on livestock, they're shot, too. Hello? We're the ones invading their habitat and therefore we're the reason they need to feed on our livestock. We should be happy there's wolves in out forests, because they belong there. We should be happy about bears and bisons. We're not. They're shot, as soon as they dare to exist. That's just embarassing.
I go for walks with my dog in a forest with wild boars. It's safe as long as you know how to behave. We forgot how to live with big wild animals.
The conversation efforts regarding the euopean bison in Poland are amazing.
Yeah, as a society, we need to reexamine our relationship with nature and find ways to coexist again. We are hopeful that spreading the knowledge is contributing to fighting ungrounded fears. 🦬

Bison is a keystone species. As bison forage, they aerate the soil with their hooves, which aids in plant growth, and disperse native seeds, helping to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem. They are important to the ecosystem. Bison graze the grasses at different heights, providing nesting grounds for birds. They roll around and pack down the soil in depressions in the ground known as wallows. Their wallows fill with rainwater and offer breeding pools for amphibians and sources of drinking water for wildlife across the landscape.

In 2001 I was backpacking through Europe. I met two young Polish couples who kindly drove me around in their car. The highlight was seeing the last free roaming bison’s. Great times.

It's so sad that we humans are still afraid of what is unknown. It is truly amazing how a species that was once extinct in the wild was able to bounce back from extinction and thrive in their historical habitat instead of a caged zoo.
Currently, I am taking Biology at a university, with my thesis topic regarding conservation. I hope that it may also have a huge impact onto the world
It was not extinct as it lives 😀 Bison, in Polish Żubr, was under kings protection of the kings for centuries. The last wild population was murdered by German soldiers during WWI. Polish scientists gathered few remaining animals still found in captivity, like zoos, selected viable specimens and restored the population. Now it thrives across Poland and some were also relocated to other countires.
Amazing how a group of dedicated individuals can bring a nearly extinct animal back from extinction. Wholesome and educative video. Thank you for the hard work! ❤🦬❤
Beautiful testimony to nature's resilience! We have now around 2.600 bison, but I was shocked to learn that Germany is not willing to even host one. The technique of "gently spooking them way" is a myth! They do not stay away, they keep returning to the fields despite farmers' considerable efforts. I hope peaceful solutions are found for both sides.

There is a device used on some large American ranches to keep cows from going too far - it makes an annoying buzzing noise if the cow wearing it gets too close to the boundary. It might be cheaper and more effective than having to send out people to chase the bison.
The other "fenceless" pasture devices use a shock collar, which wouldn't work through the neck fur of the bison.

Most people didn't know the USA had bison all across the continent even in Virginia and Georgia, and they were a slightly smaller lived in forests and served the same purpose as discribed here. The forests weren't just managed by native peoples with fire. Bison did a whole lot.
