I’m learning how to “see.” This changed my perception of incorporating color into subjects that are bland. I love cemeteries. I can imagine this use for those. Your blond hair demo definitely showed me how to see shapes in hair, and how to paint them. Thank you for offering these demos to us. Greatly appreciated.
I just love watching you paint. Whether you realize it or not just watching how you blend, how wet you work, and how carefully you paint those edges and corners is an education ❤
Brilliant demonstration, thank you Shelley. 💖💖💖💖💖 I don’t think it matters what subject you chose, I always learn something. Look forward to your “live” video each week.
Shelley, I’ve only been Watercoloring for 7 years and although I attended an informal class weekly the true basics were never really explained. Your demo today explained so much for the novice particularly the ‘limited pallet’ approach. I just loved it. Ty. Michael.
When I get a few moments I'll finish this video. I can't wait to try this. Excellent demonstration 😊💛 It's always a pleasure to see you pop-up with a new vid. 🙏🥰
What I would like, is to much more thoroughly understand underpainting. When to do one and when not. How to do an underpainting generally. How to choose what color or colors to use in the underpainting. Thanks so very much!
As usually. I (Nancy, not JOhn) I am blown away by your demo. You make such sense out of putting down paints...how, where, the dampnes of paper. My head is so full, that I am still letting it all sink in. Thank you SO much Shelley.
Here from the Binghamton, southerntier, in NYS. My daughters name is also Shelley, so i won't have a hard time remembering your name. Now that i. Have found you. i am sure i will learn much. Which makes me happy.
Just watched this today Shelley, as I only discovered you a few weeks ago. This was a great lesson, and your explanations & suggestions are so encouraging. Thank you, Bindy
this was without a doubt the best video. I was looking for these guidelines, they are very complex and important details when thinking about a structure for the work. thank you very much!
This was a brilliant demo! I've seen this technique for an underpainting, but not in conjunction with the actual placement of the colours. I've been wondering how this might apply to other types of paintings, such as the last demo, the tulip. Surely it would add interest to the main shadows on the tulip petals, and also to the foliage? Do you have a comment on that? In answer to your question, I most love the demos where you explain techniques, fixes, and water control. You always add some extra insight or detail beyond what other people do. For example, in the tulip demo, you didn't just mention a couple of ways to darken a colour, but also when each technique might be chosen over the others. Thanks. It would be helpful in future to see today's painting technique applied to a very different painting that is not a building. Perhaps to some background foliage. Thanks, as always.
Thank you so much for this brilliant demo. Even before you finished, my favourite was the third one with the more muted colours( R Sien,Cobalt and R D'or). I can actually feel the atmosphere from this one. So much more atmospheric temperature by using those colours. Thank you so much. I never miss your fantastic demo's, I am learning so much. You are in my book...a great inspiration. Greetings from Ireland.
Gorgeous, Shelley! As usual 😊. Best tip today was to set color down without spreading it out. Essential for me in Denver where humidity can be in single digits. Often I want to paint a whole shadow without patchiness and it dries before I finish, causing lines when I try to fill in and connect. Now I’m going to try filling up the brush and just “setting it down” and maybe go back to the well more often…. You are the best.
wonderful lesson as always. I learned that I spread my paint too thin so a. it doesn't blend much and b. it always seems to dry too quickly. Now I know WHY !!! yay thank you for helping me tweak my process.
Greetings from Sydney Australia- really enjoyed your demo thank you. The use of limited palette and tonal study were very interesting. I’m keen to hear your advice on composition and perhaps choosing details to omit from source imagery? I work mostly in abstract but like to keep my hand in with more representational studies in sketchbook. Thanks again!
This is one of my favorite demos of yours! Did you use an extra white paper? How did you transfer your drawing on tracing paper to the watercolor paper?
Thank you so much for all of your tutorials. I am especially excited about this one as it addresses my favorite style of painting through breaking it down into manageable technique. I can’t wait to try it!
I loved this demo, really simplified value study and can’t wait to try this out on various different primaries. Sometimes I just want to paint and practice and I can see how this will also help understand the colours in your palette in a fun way. You always explain everything in such detail but in really simple terms. Thank you, I’m so glad I found you 😊
Awe! You always amaze me. This demonstration is the best! I am learning from you how to keep the amount of water in my paintbrush equal to what the water amount is on my paper, stopping when the paper is drying, and how to soften hard edges. I am also learning to really look at colors. I highly recommend this demonstration and so many of your demos for others learning to use watercolors. Thank you, Shelley. I was in awe when in 2nd piece, the sun just started to shine when you put in those darks!
Thank you, Shelley for a great video. I am teaching my 16 year old granddaughter watercolors and will use this technique to teach value. I just returned from Kythera, Greece and you inspired me to use this technique. I was wondering if you have a zoom or UA-cam video available to view of your other paintings from Greece ?
Absolutely amazing demo. Just changing the 3 primaries completely changed the mood of the painting. Also loved how the lightest areas suggest sunlight. I have 2 questions: 1. Do you think about the transparency of the colour? Cerulean Blue is opaque, I think. 2. Would you leave the sunlit areas white?
Were you using Raw Sienna or Raw Sienna Deep? Love this video. I've always wanted to use the triad method but most videos I watched were a pouring method. I didn't seem to have this control when I tried them myself. Thank you.
Great video as always😍. Unfortunatley I missed it😶. Thank you for sharing your beautiful knowledge 💙🙏. QUESTION: Any sudjestions for people with "Colour deficiency"?
Thank you so much for your watercolour teaching! It’s simply lovely. Presently, I am struggling with painting a full length statue of a Madonna and I am not sure which colour to use for a monochromatic greyish cement. Do I use the same colours as you did in this video or is it different for a statue. If it wouldn’t be too much trouble could you kindly give a demonstration in the future on how to paint a cement statue of any kind without using the colour grey. Thanks again! Looking forward to your next video! Blessings…Maria 🖼️

This is one of my favourite lessons….wow…..so much to learn in this video. Thank You so much Shelley😊
Nice job Shelly…….without your comment, I had already selected #3 as my favorite……….of course I also like the B&W version. Thanks from a beginner.

This video is fantastic! What an eye opener, explains so much! Thanks!
Brilliant demonstration Shelley. So encouraging!
hi this demo really is bring it home to me on the advantage of stepping thru the values in a painting taking time to dry between thanks great demo

Good morning from Washington state
Thanks, I prefer the first
Try mixing your paint in the tube by simply squeezing the tube side to side up and down before openning works great.

@@shelleypriorfineart Thank you so much for your reply! I will look up your videos on line! 🍁🍁🍁
I’m back, watching again. Will you leave those whites unpainted or add a light wash of color?
Just leave them white
