Thank you so much for those controller guides, I rebought the game on PS5 and this was really useful to get me started. I realize that you quit the game a year ago but know that all the work you put in making those is really appreciated.
Glad I could help! And thank you. I have a goal to lose 100 pounds before I let myself play FFXIV Dawntrail and in 2023 lost 50 so hopefully I’ll be able to check out the expansion later this year.
Thank you so much, I recently had to pick it up on console again after my computer died and I was really saddened that I struggled so hard with controller, but this has really helped me get back into it in no time!
Love these guides, very helpful when setting up a controller. The supporting docs (list of macros and bindings) are amazing as well. One suggestion for those of us not in the level 90 club: would it be possible to provide an additional list of traits/actions in ascending order by level? Right now, as I gain additional spells, I have to search through the entire macro list to find it. This would be easier if there was a list by level. Thanks for all your hard work!
Thank you John, so nice to read this today, just released the black mage version and it's always good to hear that people enjoy the work that I put into these videos, gives me the energy to keep grinding away on the jobs :)
Rule of thumb for all classes on controller: Long cooldowns I set to double taps, always. Buttons I’ll use consistently (main combos or rotations) I set to Right triggers much as possible. Lesser used buttons I’ll set to L Trigger. I’ll never set abilities to R1 toggle as I think it feels VERY clunky switching back and forth during fights. TLDR: Get used to the W Cross Hotbar ASAP. Set long timers to doubles tabs. PROFIT

With how much moving I tend to do while in a fight, I've been thinking about trying controller. My reasoning is that maybe it will help my melee jobs avoid "bad" better without such a hit to my DPS. My MCH is rocking, but my DRG needs a change. I have a DS4 and a XBOne pad. I feel that the Xbox pad would be better because the sticks are farther apart. Don't have a chat pad though.
Hey man, Amazing guide, massively improved my controller gameplay experience, thank you so much. The only thing I can't seem to figure out is using right bumper to navigate the aetherites on my world map. As I'm using a ps5 pad I would've liked that as the right analog stick can be quite a bit sensitive and I often miss them lmao. Any ideas how I can bind it like you have?
Yeah, sometimes it just snaps in and sometimes I feel like I miss them too. There might be a setting that improves this but off the top of my head I can’t think of it. Look for anything that improves magnetic 🧲 as that’s what should be happening around these areas
Very food video tutorial. I'm starting over, and using a controller from the beginning. Thanks for the help! Also, what is that enchanting song at the start of your video in the background? It's beautiful. Expansion theme song?
Been playing pc kb & m for ages every mmo I've played I've never been able to get used to pressing 1-9 or ctrl 1-9 etc always ended up just using my mouse to click things so when I got ff14 on ps3 I fell in love with the controls now I don't think I could ever play an mmo with kb & m ever again 😂
Your controller guides are the best and as a newbie, I'm constantly using them. On a side note, it looks like this guide is a bit outdated because some items in the menus have changed like auto-target settings. Also, I wouldn't mind, if you could share your optimal Elite 2 controller settings. Thanks.
This is so cool, and honestly very reassuring as an Xbox player who's going to be joining next year! My friend who has been trying the game out lately on PS5 has been telling me the controls on controller sucks, but this doesn't seem really that bad.
I do wish the sheath/unsheath settings had an "in combat" equivalent since i do enjoy running around with my weapon unsheathed, and some of these options look appealing but only for when im in combat ;w;
Your controller guides are amazing. Thank you so much for making smn and war in particular a lot more intuitive due to the layouts. If I may ask are you going to update with the new abilities? If not il work them in, it's all good.
Yes, I'm working on them, but they do take time, I try to make sure I have a really good feel for dungeon content, and raid content so that if someone uses my layouts that they feel good right from the go. But that does mean with leveling, and getting covid, and family time for the holidays that I'm behind my planned schedule. Sorry about that.
The controller support is so good and it's so comfy to use one that even I, a PC master race guy who builds my own gaming machines, who only ever uses a M&kb - uses a controller to play FFXIV. What more can I say. In Doom Eternal or Halo - yeah the controller support is really good but M&kb is better. It takes a lot to get me to switch.
did you happen to do ANYTHING with a layout of how every class abilities setup should be on controller in terms of what abilities you should and shouldn't be using or know anyone who has something like that? anyone in chat feel free to answer too
Whats in your opinion the easiest and most fun job to play for a new comer in the game and also wich job would you advice for later on in the game (controller player) ?
You got a lot of good choices, I tend to recommend archer which gives you a lot of movement, but also arcanist does really well too. If you wanted something a little more tanky, marauder is a good option, and if you wanted healing you could unlock that at level 30 on Archanist, or pick up conjour.
I know this video is about a year old, but hoping you're still reviewing comments for it - one thing that wasn't discussed in the video was how to resize the a frame like the map frame. I know on PC you can click and hold the lower right corner and drag to make the window bigger I'm guessing using the controller as a virtual mouse will work, but is is there another method? Also I notice it seems you move very smoothly over the map when using the control stick to move around the map - was that just practice or did you reduce any kind of a sensitivity setting?
Thanks for the video! I started using the controller after watching your stuff and so far I enjoy it! I have been thinking about trying a PS controller mostly because it's what I grew up with. If I do decide to try a PS controller on PC, would that need a program or does it the game detect it on its own? Sorry if you said and I missed it
If you use a ps4 controller you'd need to use a program called d4windows, but ps5 works without anything extra, and so does the xbox and stadia controllers
I just subscribed, your welcome, my wife is just starting and wants a controller. Which controller would be best to get for her assuming she gets into the game and wants to do all the cool things? Also do you have any suggestions of settings for someone who gets motion sick easy? Thanks.
@@GingerPrimeGaming yeah ok. Seems kinda odd to me. I just started, so I’m not sure yet, but I would think binding the dpad to the 4 back buttons would work, when your muscle memory kicks in. Maybe start with two for enemies. Left and right dpad. I’m so excited to get into this game. But coming from wow which I played 12-14 years heavy and high ranked pvp. I’m ocd I want everything to be perfect set up. But use dpad for both switching targets and using spells while moving. U can easily hit the lb rb while moving? Or am I missing something ? ;)
As a returning player to FFXIV I lost a metric ton of cuatomization and I never figured out how to build macros back when I played heavily. I cannot express enough how helpful your guides have been at re-educating me about the controller setup and configurations. I spent hours the other day when i first logged in again just fixing my chat and re-doing my HUD and I have to admit some of the stuff in the HUD I dont have any idea what it is. If you have any more videos about the settings and configurations menus I'm going to find and watch them. If not I'd love to see some videos that go more deeply into what all the little things do and don't do and what the different HUD windows are. A couple questions I did have is, when i watched the PLD level 1-90 (im 80 rn) controller guide I have no idea how to access the HotBars with my controller. Are they just there for visual representation of the skills or are they quick access? I also wanted to know how you optimized your skills for content that might be lower than your level, for example Deltascape 4.0 (Savage)[Synced]? You know content where you can't use the true rotation of your class. I always had difficulty adjusting my rotation when I did synced content it's even more troublesome when my Skills were locked out because the Synced content was super low level like 30's. I usually end up spamming the same beginner skills and not doing a true rotation. You have absolutely earned a subscribe and like from me!
One of the things I find kind of wonky is that you can't really set it up however you want. For example, why can't I move autorun to L3 and put WXHB left on L1, move map to R3, change hotbar to square, then put WXHB right on R1? Things would flow so much easier instead of reserving WXHB for stuff you don't use too often.
I really hope they add proper support for the Series X controller at some point. Had the A button on my XB1 get damaged, and the Series X controllers were the same price so I bought one of those instead. Had to use it wired for months and months because while connected via bluetooth, the keybinds are all wrong, but it works fine while connected using a USB C cable. Eventually the charging port on the controller got damaged from constantly being moved around while plugged in. It started disconnecting if I moved it, and I had to unplug then plug it back in for it to reconnect properly. Had it happen back to back to back one day and got so fed up I went back to the XB1 controller because a janky A button was less infuriating than it being disconnected because I moved my hands like 1° Come on SE, Series X has been out for more than a year, why does it still not work properly?!
Hey welcome, glad this was helpful, and feel free to ask any questions if you need anything. I just retired from FFXIV after 13+ years covering it, so you won't see much FFXIV content unless it relates to a topic about gaming and MMORPGs :) Just FYI.
I'm still testing them, and I put them though a lot of stress in raids and dungeons to make sure they have a very natual fit and flow before publishing. Covid really set me back, but i'd like to start rolling them out here in the next few weeks.
If you check the Endwalker Controller Guide playlist on the channel page you'll see all the ones I've made so far. I've finished the tanks, healers, and casters, and am working on melee followed by ranged
@@GingerPrimeGaming no it’s a good guide it seems more for pc players I showed it to my brother he found it helpful I’ve been playing since it launched on PlayStation so controller guides just seem really strange that’s all
I like this and i approved! 👍 I have a question about the xbox 1 controller, because that's what I'm using and ofcourse I have the WXHB box always on display and I double tap and hold to use those abilities on the top row and as a person who struggles with Rheumatoid i wish i can just have 1 button to toggle to my WXHB without double clicking the Right and left triggers and to just to have it toggled so i dont have to hold it and i notice we havd 2 more buttons behind the xbox 1 controller the AGL and the AGR, is their a way i can set that to a specific bar like example just to hit it once and it will toggle my WXHB bar 2?
The way I'm reading this comment, I only come up with the answer of I don't think so, thus perhaps I'm miss-reading it. If you are able to join me on a ffxiv stream, hit me up with that question again so we can walk through it visually.
@Ginger Prime defiantly, and hope i can catch you on stream, been trying to play around the Controller UI to activate the AGL and AGR buttons on the back of the Controller.
please im having trouble, cannot you just like, cuztomize your buttons mapping for the controllers? like I dont want those weird presets buttons for like jumping/confirming, I just want to configure this the way I like, is this not possible??????????????????????
@@GingerPrimeGaming The settings I've found are: Under Character Configuration > Cross > Cross Hotbar Transparency I have Standard set to 100, Active Set to 0, and Inactive Set to 100. I can't get rid of the yellow highlight when I'm holding down triggers and I haven't found a way to do it.
I know I am a little late to the game, and I'll be going through this guide to really try and learn, but I am really hoping for some good tips. I have a steam deck, and I really want to use it in a, possibly, weird way. I'd like to be able to use the left and right triggers to cycle through enemies for targeting, while using the left and right bumpers for cycling through my allies for healing. I want to use my back buttons L4 / L5 and R4 / R5 for selecting which of the 4 displayed cross bars I'm using for casting, having it so when I click the button it toggles the bar, click it again to detoggle. When my crossbars arn't toggled, I'd like to use my D pad to change between the cross bars. IDEALLY what I'd like is that it's like I have cross bars on a big wheel, and pressing up and down on the d-pad spins that wheel up and down (So that if bars 3 and 4 were on the top, they 'rotate' down to where 1 and 2 are, and where 3 and 4 were, 5 and 6 roll down) I'd like to use the thumb pads as sort of 'quick' menus, for things like those automated chat messages, like hellos, heals, thanks, and sets of emotes. Is this possible, or am I living a hopeless dream? How can I see that kind of thing up? Are some of those things possible? Should I just learn more about the gross bar system? I'm really excited to play on the Deck, but I just don't know if the configuration I'd like to try is possible. Either way! I really thank you for making the content on this, Ginger Prime makes some great s tuff and I really appreciate the guide.
You should be able to set yourself up to do this, you'd just need to remap your controller buttons to make it happen. I have it setup on my steam deck, and I use the back buttons on the deck to target enemies which is very nice :)
@@GingerPrimeGaming Awesome! Subbed BTW, and gonna be going through more of your videos. Your content is really great quality! Thanks for the rapid response, even on a 7 month old video. Very cool of you!
If your using the chat pad and it's bring up menus and such, be sure to enable direct input on the character settings, so that it will act as chat. You might also need to update your controller by plugging it in and opening up xbox accessories app for it to find hte update.
When I connect my ps4 controller to my PC my sound are coming thru the controller's speaker and not on my headset that is hooked on my usb (PC) how do I solve this? thanks in advance.
Two areas here: 1. System Config > Gamepad - might want to check the Enable Dual Sense/Shock functionality 2. System Config > Sound - scroll down to the DualSense/Shock Settings - change it from all, to just notices only. If that doesn't work, check your PC sound settings and change your default sound device to your PC over your controller (sometimes with windows update's it messes with all the sound settings)
I see you made a guide for samurai a year ago. its a bit outdated. in my opinion the class now more skills available then using two sets of chotbars, can you make a short updated guide for samurai skills on controller?
Yep, that's the plan, but I put a lot of work into these guids, and been sick with Covid, plus spending time with the family over the holidays, an updated guide will be released as soon as it's finished :)
@@GingerPrimeGaming no rush, but definitely something to look forward to. I decided to macro meikyo shisui with true north. And it definitely feels smoother to execute things and opens up space.I saw in your old samurai video you had a macro called "finisher" with certain moves. is that actually still viable or no?
SMN is weird with the spell speed because your summons turn your spells into insta casts (outside of ifrit) so overall you're not getting the benifit that you would say with a black mage. :)
You may have Said it and I was not paying attention, but what chat pad are you using? I haven't been able to definitively figure out which one is the best for PC with the elite Controller so I haven't bought one.

@@GingerPrimeGaming Thanx for the reply. On a side note, do you know if I will get the new world exp buff when I transfer a character to OCE if I already made a new character there?
Was there an update that changed gamepad config? My xbox controller worked fine for years. Now everything is wrong. The game is unplayable now. I been fussing with my settings and cant seem to find anything that fixes the legacy config for my controller.
@@GingerPrimeGaming I fixed it, I plugged my controller into my pc instead of Bluetooth and it fixed it. Must have been some sort of conflict with my hardware. Thank your the offer though. Its nice of you to reach out like that.
It's funny how this game proves MMO's can work extremely well with controller. It's to the point where it's harder for me to play with keyboard and mouse
I also think muscle memory does become easier with controllers because you can also translate it to more games, outside the RTS genre. Also, thanks for the tweet by the way :)

Thanks for the sub and happy this was a help :)
How have I not been sub'ed to GingerPrime?! I have remedied that situation.
Thanks so much and welcome, if you enjoy the content and want more FFXIV in your life, check out Ginger JRPG Gaming too :)
Subscribed and thanks for the welcome!
Thanks for the sub and I hope you have a great weekend :)
How to map and use p1 p2 p3 p4 on the elite controller ?
There is an app for Xbox accessories that allow you to configure the elite controller
Also I notice it seems you move very smoothly over the map when using the control stick to move around the map - was that just practice or did you reduce any kind of a sensitivity setting?
appreciate your content!
It really means a lot, thank you :)
I see you mentioned top link in playlist....we should prob pin that link here...I'm going to attempt to figure out how to get there.
It should be on the home page but here you go - ua-cam.com/play/PLmfQaUGtmQWg1Xg5Bv1-xr_pIkYFQ4ZxJ.html
@@GingerPrimeGaming are the ones labeled PVP still good for PVE?🫣
No, just skip the pvp ones
Thanks for the video! I started using the controller after watching your stuff and so far I enjoy it! I have been thinking about trying a PS controller mostly because it's what I grew up with. If I do decide to try a PS controller on PC, would that need a program or does it the game detect it on its own? Sorry if you said and I missed it
If you use a ps4 controller you'd need to use a program called d4windows, but ps5 works without anything extra, and so does the xbox and stadia controllers
@@GingerPrimeGaming Awesome, thanks!
I just subscribed, your welcome, my wife is just starting and wants a controller. Which controller would be best to get for her assuming she gets into the game and wants to do all the cool things? Also do you have any suggestions of settings for someone who gets motion sick easy? Thanks.
My preference for myself has been Xbox, but for my kids and wife I find that a ps5 controller fits their hands more comfortably
Gotta ask u something. I don’t catch what u use the back paddles for. The left and right d-pad right?
LB and RB which allows me to tab target when fighting.
Thanks mate this helped alot
Glad this was a help :) hope you enjoy your time in FFXIV
Had it happen back to back to back one day and got so fed up I went back to the XB1 controller because a janky A button was less infuriating than it being disconnected because I moved my hands like 1°
Come on SE, Series X has been out for more than a year, why does it still not work properly?!
I'd recommend you check out the wireless adapter for pc, as that solves issues with the bluetooth connection personally.
I’ll look into that, thanks!
Happy to help, the bluetooth connection works, but would randomly fail at the worst times. But so far the adapter works flawlessly.
Just got into FF your videos are a huge help. New subscriber.
Hey welcome, glad this was helpful, and feel free to ask any questions if you need anything. I just retired from FFXIV after 13+ years covering it, so you won't see much FFXIV content unless it relates to a topic about gaming and MMORPGs :)
Just FYI.
Any idea when we can expect controller guides for reaper, sange, and summoner?
I'm still testing them, and I put them though a lot of stress in raids and dungeons to make sure they have a very natual fit and flow before publishing. Covid really set me back, but i'd like to start rolling them out here in the next few weeks.
I'd love an Elite series 2 video for FF14
I started on a PS3 and have continued using a controller.
i dont know if anyone will reply....but how do i make my controller vibrate when i walk please let me know DX
Under system config > controller you should see the vibration option.
Do you happen to have an Endwalker PVE Controller Guide? Don't think I've seen one :(
If you check the Endwalker Controller Guide playlist on the channel page you'll see all the ones I've made so far. I've finished the tanks, healers, and casters, and am working on melee followed by ranged
@@GingerPrimeGaming just realized I meant to put machinist there but didn’t lol 😅
As some one who does not own a pc and started playing on PlayStation this is super weird
Anything I can do to help Zack?
@@GingerPrimeGaming no it’s a good guide it seems more for pc players I showed it to my brother he found it helpful I’ve been playing since it launched on PlayStation so controller guides just seem really strange that’s all
What confuses me is that they're one in the same, playstation isn't any different from PC.
Yeah I show you how in system config > controller > bindings
How do you hide the Crossbar highlights when you trigger Right or Left trigger? I'd like to have it as transparent as possible.
Hey, I just saw your comment on W2G, are you seeing it like you want it in my video? I need to go look at the settings.
IDEALLY what I'd like is that it's like I have cross bars on a big wheel, and pressing up and down on the d-pad spins that wheel up and down (So that if bars 3 and 4 were on the top, they 'rotate' down to where 1 and 2 are, and where 3 and 4 were, 5 and 6 roll down)
I'd like to use the thumb pads as sort of 'quick' menus, for things like those automated chat messages, like hellos, heals, thanks, and sets of emotes.
You don't talk about the keyboard plugged in the xbox pad, does it work on pc?
It does, I just use it to chat
I need help using an Xbox controller. I have a chatpad, but can't seem to use it for typing in chat. Does anyone know if this is possible?
If your using the chat pad and it's bring up menus and such, be sure to enable direct input on the character settings, so that it will act as chat. You might also need to update your controller by plugging it in and opening up xbox accessories app for it to find hte update.
How do I close a something like the quest window? Is it only possible through the virtual mouse?
When I connect my ps4 controller to my PC my sound are coming thru the controller's speaker and not on my headset that is hooked on my usb (PC) how do I solve this? thanks in advance.
Two areas here:
1. System Config > Gamepad - might want to check the Enable Dual Sense/Shock functionality
2. System Config > Sound - scroll down to the DualSense/Shock Settings - change it from all, to just notices only.
If that doesn't work, check your PC sound settings and change your default sound device to your PC over your controller (sometimes with windows update's it messes with all the sound settings)
@@GingerPrimeGaming wow thanks for the reply. its working now thank you so much.
Is there a way to control how many hotbars R1 cycles through?
Yes, you can go into the hotbar > custom and then scroll down and you can set which hotbars R1 goes to when your weapon is shethed and unshethed :)
Anybody else having an issue with target filters? My chocobo is being recognized as an npc/object instead of a party member.
Tyty GP....Quick question to you or anyone. Now I'm 90 summoner and see gear don't have spell speed. What latest stat priority...
Here is a good rule for SMN - Follow general priority of crit > det >= dh.
Where if the set is Det heavy, go with more DH melds.
@@GingerPrimeGaming Your the best bro, I appreciate you replying i had all spellspeed and crit lol...
Its an xbox chat pad, I don't see them onsale that often but iI find they do the trick.
@@GingerPrimeGaming they don't make them anymore unfortunately you have to buy a knock off if you want one now It appears
I have the game on PC and I want to try playing on PS4 with controller. Is there a way to get a free trial on PS without linking it to my PSN? Coz I want to use my PSN to link to my PC account when I do decide to buy the game.
Easiest way would be to just create another PSN to do this kind of testing.
@@GingerPrimeGaming Thanx for the reply. On a side note, do you know if I will get the new world exp buff when I transfer a character to OCE if I already made a new character there?
i gave up after spending 2 hours trying to accept the first quest
this game is nice but a bit too slow paced for me
You might enjoy no rest for the wicked
How do you get the icons right under the HP/MP bar?
That’s Hotbar 3 and you can set that via HUD settings
@@GingerPrimeGaming I see, I guess you can't access it with a controller...
Was there an update that changed gamepad config? My xbox controller worked fine for years. Now everything is wrong. The game is unplayable now. I been fussing with my settings and cant seem to find anything that fixes the legacy config for my controller.
What's happening? If you need hit me up on discord (link in desc) and we can troubleshoot, I wonder if your controller is failing.
Ugh. This is so annoying. I'm trying to get my friend to play this game with me but getting them used to the game is so hard when I myself never used a controller and they only can. I have such a hard time helping them when they are struggling with controls, which is why I'm here in the first place, trying to learn how it works. I wish the default control scheme was much simpler to understand
very slow paced game
