That trans is the 1st I ever went into. I only had to replace the short output shaft, bushing & the thrust washer set that sits on the 4th drum with the 3 ears. Done about 110k. That vehicle ran for 3 more years until the pump went (I suspect) and no gears engaged. The cost to do a complete overhaul at this point, was not worth it to the customer. 04 Hyundai Accent 1.8ltr with the A4AF3. This trans job gave me the courage to do internal trans work on other models.

Whenever possible, go by references or Google reviews of a shop before taking it in. However, there are those who can't afford a typical job and beg me to try anyway. There's only a few customers I've made the attempt on their trannys because they also signed paperwork. So far those always ended up well, but there were very little metal shavings or I was able to get enough info on the particular transmission. So to answer the question, I have customers who ask (maybe 1 out of 25), but the majority of "internal" trans work, I do turn away.

Hello Gary, I have a 1995 Hyundai Accent with an A4AF2 Transmission. I was able to read the codes by connecting a LED with a resistor to the TCM pin in the OBD jack. The codes are 52, 54, and 86. The trani would lock in third and would not get into fourth gear, if it does go into fourth then at some time it drops to third and locks, I can get second and third manually. If I restart, the problem returns a couple minutes after driving again. It appears as if the shifting between gears doesn't match the engine speed. I have already replace the A and B pulse generators but it still locks up. The solenoids resistance are ok and clicks fine when 12v is applied, the fluid and filter was replaced. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Gary great videos. My wife's 2006 Hyundai Santa fe gls 2.7l all wheel drive came with code p072 and p0700. Brought to this Mechanic that he's doing transmission rebuild for 30 years. Hopefully he fixes it. I wonder what might be wrong and if it's fixable. Is Rebuild better than replacing it. Thank you
Hello owner of Hyunday Getz 08, with transmission like in your video. Before one month suddenly started a noise of knocking from the gear and few minutess letter a error P0734 . I replaced the oil of the gear and fill a original one, also replaced the filter of the gear. I also replaced the bearing Ata- end clutch, replaced also the end clutch. Of course I cleaned the bearing from the magnets. now the car without any error. But the clicking noise is still the same ? What I should to do ?
i replaced the 6 solenoids and the end clutch bearing/race/shim. Still get a PO734 code. The car won't shift into 4th gear. Still a mechanical issue. I'm doing this at home, so there are limitations being/doing this kind of job here. Gary, I'll drive down and get the car rapaired at your shop. HA! i live in Québec
@@tamerturgut1220 it's the end clutch bearing problem. It mechanically fails and ends up in your Transaxle oil pan. Gary explained everything in his vid. We replaced it with the fix kit but it didn't solve the problem. The solenoids are ok now. Replaced three that were out of spec. The car is going to the scrap yard. Thanks!
Hi Gary , I have a 2007 Hyundai Accent with same trans a4af3 . i have no codes . when i am driving on highway it drives fine. but when i slowdown and stop in traffic . it goes in neutral . rpm goes up but it does not want move even i can see on dash its in drive . if i shift to neutral and put it back in 2nd or low gear it start moving . it only happens once in while . i did replace trans fluid and filter . it has only 75k mile on it .
@@GaryFerraro there is no codes at this time but one year ago when it happened first time . i was driving about 30 to 35 mph and i had to do the sudden hard braking . that time i had the code for first gear shift solenoid . i did clear the code and it drove fine after that. i did ck the transmission oil level . also i replaced the transmission fluid and filter . ck for metal in oil pan . did not find any thing only little metal on magnets .code never came back.
Hello, I am having the same fault in my 2007 Hyundai Accent car. I have searched a lot to replace the part but I do not know the replacement reference. I am referring to the axle and the toothed pinion where the discs go, they go hand in hand. If you could help me it would be perfect. thank you
Hey Gary thanks for this video.I have a 2004 KIA RIO a sweet ride and very reliable car,but wear and tear does and will happen.I began to get the code P0732,0733 and 0734.It drives fine,but i could feel the slip for the most part when I have the AC on.I still drive it,but the Code won't go away.It has 113k miles.The Code turned On around the 100k miles..Can you let me know if it's a serious issues and the estimate cost of such repair for me to expect..Thank You Sir!..
These codes are gear ratio error codes, this means mechanical problem and it's usually internal, computer is seeing a slip. What is odd is you have gear errors in2nd(p0732) 3rd(P0733) and 4th(P0734). Are there any other codes such as a P0715(Turbine speed sensor)? also, has the fluid level been checked? so if you clear the codes how fast do they return?
@@GaryFerraro Never seen the Code 0715. The Trans Oil is good.No color and is leveled,no leaks. If i reset code,they come back within 3-5 days (if i drive locally without any AC activity. If i go on freeway and/or freeway with AC it could come back within minutes or hour.I've been driving it like this for over a year.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Accent, code p0734. I replaced the bearing that usually fails (mine only had a very small piece missing). After putting everything back together I’m still getting the same problem. Car shifts fine in gears 1-3 but as soon as it tries to go into 4th it’s act like it’s in neutral then goes into limp mode. Any other causes for this ?
Gary Ferraro Are you referring to the seal that goes in the overdrive hub? If so I did not it looked fine to me, I added the shim and replaced the bearing. I used the 42220Lk kit from whatever it takes transmission.
Im Trying to repair an 07 elantra with a p0734 code. Car drove 6 miles absolutely perfect. Going down the highway it downshifted (by itself for no apearant reason,into third (at 70mph) Then it stayed in 3rd when i got off highway like a limp mode even after i came to a stop. only code is 0734. but it never slipped in forth. Any thoughts on likely culprits??? car with 165k

Hi i have a problem with my transmission a4af3. when i start up the engine and put D(drive) it starts running ok until 3rd gear then i stop the car and the transmission stay block in 3rd gear and if i change the D to 2 or L it makes a punch in other words it doesnt apply softly, so i turn off the car and start up it again and the problem disappear until i run the car. thanks, sorry for my english
Yes! and when i stop the car and try to run again it remains in 3rd gear, but if i turn off the car and start up again immediately it starts running in 1st gear great until 3rd and stock again in this gear
Hello Gary, im from el salvador ... so i have a little problem, my hyundai accent 2002, 1.6L DOCH, have the same transmission A4AF3 from your video, and i have read some books and manuals that says that thistransmission is completely compatible since accent 2002 to accent 2010, and i want to buy a new second hand transmission for my car, so my question is: Is this REAL ????, may i use an A4AF3 transmission manufactured in 2010 on my accent 2002 ???? .... so many people says me, that the unique differences are the sensor connectors, and i have o use the older sensors from my broke transmission, but i want to know if this is true until i buy a wrong transmission application .... thankyou, i need your help, thankyou, and excuse me for my bad english, take care .... waiting your answer ..... so,if some one here if this is possible, i will be thanksfull ...

today ck engine light came on after one year code is p0731.

You took apart the back of the trans and changed the seal?
