Jeffrey I found your music through the Irish songwriter Mick Flannery who had some glowing things to say about you. Unbelievable stuff, would love to catch both of you live sometime soon. For anyone reading this comment do yourself a favour and check out Jeffrey and Mick playing Billy Boroughs on Other Voices, you'll love it.
Michael, Jeffrey is one of if, not the greatest songwriters of our time. Watch "There is a Treasure" to dive into the depths of his talent. The way he carries the base chord beat through his song, while filling the lyrics with notes dancing to the same emotion is not copied by anyone in the modern era. So honored to listen live once, and I hope you dive into more of his music.Talent at a level we don't get to see often!
Jeffrey! I saw you open for Rising Appalachia a couple years ago in Berkeley. I’d never heard of you before but your music brought tears to my eyes multiple times. I wanted to talk to you afterwards but I’m shy and everything I thought of to say sounded stupid in my head and wasn’t what I wanted to say (my words never say what I want them to mean). Anyway, your stories and music move me deeply. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Sweetwater this Sunday.
I know when you simply state the name of the artist in the title and say "you're welcome" that im about to be put on a real, badass artist and holy cow i've never had one song just immediately take over my emotions and make me ball like a baby quite like this. This is the kind of songwriting and artistry I come here to find. Not every episode is about keys and notes and chords, sometimes all that just comes second to the song and poetry of the person behind the art. Thanks Michael for all you do!
Man, it's so clear that broaching these subjects on air makes you uncomfortable. And you did it anyway. You took your time and gave an earnest and thoughtful response to this absolutely gorgeous song. I'm a man in my 40s now like you and (I suspect) Mr. Martin, and we all know what it's like to live in the comparison of our current and former selves. We understood so little about masculinity when we were younger, and in reaching for it we sometimes hurt the ones around us. Being better now means admitting that and learning from it. This is what being a good man (or human) looks like. Thanks for it.
I’m a gay man with tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my skin watching this. First of all what a great song. I think it’s really cool to have subject matter like this in a country song is really cool and rare. I think when he says the word fagot is just being honest to the narrative of the song.. its an honest and raw song so you’ve got to pull no punches to tell this story and paint this picture of this moment in time he’s letting us relive with him and get his message across.
Absolutely. Choosing softer language wouldn’t impart anywhere near as much emotion as this song is meant to invoke, especially in admitting how he let his friend down.
Holy shit! Thanks to Dustin and to you, and to Jeffrey Martin for a breathtaking piece of art. It does what great art should-make you feel things and ask questions. I made it about two thirds of the way before I was in tears. Really makes you take stock of every careless word you’ve ever let loose. And you nailed the analysis. I have a serious problem with religion because it has all lost its way. No one seems to teach or even remember that the main idea of every religion is to love each other. The maxim of reciprocity, a.k.a. the Golden Rule, is found in every religion on the planet, usually in prohibitive form-don’t treat others in a way you wouldn’t want to be treated yourself. It predates Christianity by around 600 years. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” means in a given situation. Imagine yourself in the position of the other person and threat them accordingly. Very simple. Again, thank you and excellent job.
Thank you for showcasing in my mind America's greatest unknown singer songwriter. The quality of his catalogue will amaze you. Thank you again for for highlighting this gem of a writer
Mike, I LOVE how you can talk so explicitly about this, and about every video. Love how you mix musicianship and humanity in one bubble. Keep it up, brother.
Thank you, Michael! I am glad to have you for a "Friend I haven't met yet!" Thanks for sharing your Spirit with the world. You help to make this life a better one.
Thanks for showcasing Jeffrey Martin's music - such a top shelf singer-songwriter! If you enjoyed this song, I encourage you to buy his records - Dogs in the Daylight, One Go Around, and Thank God We Left the Garden. They're so damn good, and I'm so happy that music like his is still being written, recorded and performed. Caught him live in April in upstate New York - blown away!
What a song! Most country music just isn't for me, but this is the sort of country I do like. And the subject matter too - great, honest and raw writing. Thanks for introducing me to this!
It hits me more as a bluesy folk than country but genre boundaries are pretty useless and its probably a bit of all three. Whatever it is, very good songwriting and storytelling.
Thought I was alone in my belief that Jeffrey Martin is truly one of the best storytelling songwriters ever. He's unbelieve and deeply underrated, but it almost feels like he prefers it that way. The Middle is one of my all time favorite songs. Thanks for this!
Funny thing about The Middle - I recorded him playing it when it was new, and wanted to upload it here to YT. He has a habit of not naming songs. I texted him asking if he wanted to name it something esoteric or if The Middle was good enough. He sent me back, "From here on out, it will be called 'The Middle'". So I guess I forced him to name it!
@@partsmanba Wow - cool story, and great song! That song has gotten me and my daughter talking about all kinds of topics where compromise is needed - meet me in the middle. Thanks for sharing!
You know, I’m one of the original Lifetime members and I’ve suggested Jeffrey Martin’s music to you for four years. Glad you finally bit. Saw him open for another singer songwriter over a decade ago and was hooked. So much so that I produced his album release concert for “Dogs In The Daylight” WAY back when. Hope he finally hits it big! You all should also check out his girlfriend/muse/partner, Anna Tivel - she’s a great singer/songwriter as well.
I'm late getting to this one good sir.....but holy shit!!!! First - you guys oughta be play'n together....nice licks , and second - I feel crushed by this Jeffery Martin brother!!! He forces me to be the man I was 60yrs ago.....and yes it hurts. But I'm really glad the powers that be drew me to this , on this particular night good sir.....I needed it. And the fact that its stuff like this which has always kept me following you mr Palmesano. It's always the recognitional gift you have to deep feeling deep understanding musical arrangements that made you the friend of a 70yr old guy in Alabama who's lived thru this life known as the human condition. It's always been shows like this that keep me here. Thank you yet again , for covering every aspect of a written song speaking nothing but truth where needed. I'm really thankfull for the lessons I've had to learn in my life.....and proud now to say I haven't been that guy for a very , very long time.....but I too , will never forget. Poweful song mr Palmesano , and excellent assessment. Thanks for mr Martin , another delivery has been made. Powerful songwriting at its absolute best. Thank you , ron
Jeffrey Martin has quicky become one of my favourite artists. In my opinion hes never recorded a bad song, each one is a snapshot of a mood, a moment, a sense of a time. His voice is his own, his words always hit ans his playing is something to aspire to. A very rare talent I tell all who will listen about as often as possible. His music will be with me until my last day. Thank you for highlighting such a fantastic man and I hope many more people find and enjoy his music.
Well, feck me. I wasn’t expecting to get hit with such an emotional and beautiful song this early in the day, but here we are. What a masterpiece by Jeffery Martin. As a father to 4 teenaged sons, it hits home. My eldest son is not only gay, but he is also on the autism spectrum, high-functioning. While we provide him with a very good quality of life at home, I know his life will be (become) much more difficult than most people’s in his adult years. That said, the way he carries himself and is taking on all challenges he faces, I’m in awe of him. He’s the one who’s teaching us how to be our best selves. Incidentally, he self-taught himself to play acoustic guitar and sings in perfect pitch. He’s gonna be alright. ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful songwriting and arrangement. I hope you realize how much passion you bring, to fellow musicians, by doing these live reaction videos, Michael!
Hey Mike, I can see on your face this song affected you as much as it did me….. made me think hard about my own personal failures, the many….. Thank you and thank Jeffrey for this. This is what music, and Art should do. Make me, and all of us Think….
Oh hell yeah. I saw him at the Pie Shop in DC a month ago. Just Jeffrey and a guitar in front of a small crowd. He was absolutely mesmerizing. I’m hooked.
An added reply after watching the reaction. Michael - the fact that you react to these songs cold, live, and without edits and do it so eloquently and thoughtfully never ceases to amaze me.
Been following you for a couple years now and you never cease blowing me away with your choices and honest, heart felt, reactions. Thank you so much for building this community and sharing great music like this latest one by Mr Martin.
So glad you found him! I’ve been listening for a couple years now. Saw him in Thomas, WV a few months back and he’s unbelievable live. Highly highly recommend seeing him!
Love Jeffrey Martin, been a fan for a few years now. Such an incredibly powerful songwriter. I don't think I've found a song of his that didn't move me in some way. Going to see him again up at Mississippi Studios for my birthday this year, heck yeah.
It’s a shame I’m not on Guitar Gate… I just literally love watching you connect to the music & words with a genuine realism & passion. I’m like, man I wish I was hanging out with ya in your little music space dissecting songs, music, lyrics, life etc.. lol….. Great song 🤙
I've been on board with the LGB since forever. It just made sense. It's none of my business who you love, unless they are under age. The part where that community lost me was when the lines between men and women were blurred so much that it meant nothing to be either. I love how you bring empowering and emotional music to us. Jeffrey Martin is special. He also teams up with another amazing person, Anna Tival. She's also singer songwriter from the PNW and has the ability lyrically to put you to tears. Give her " Black Umbrella" a spin.

So Glad to finally see Jeffrey Martin on here; he is one of the best songwriters doing it today
As a gay man myself I totally agree.
What a powerful, emotional song.
@Leidolfr not “quite” a gay man? lol
@Leidolfr Nice 👍🏻
Disagree with the “Country” label. He’s folk/Americana from Oregon. No Nashville BS.
Holy shit! Thanks to Dustin and to you, and to Jeffrey Martin for a breathtaking piece of art. It does what great art should-make you feel things and ask questions.

This was incredible. The whole thing -- the music, the writing and Michael's reaction/comments. Fantastic.
Thank you for showcasing in my mind America's greatest unknown singer songwriter. The quality of his catalogue will amaze you. Thank you again for for highlighting this gem of a writer
Couldn't agree more. I've also had trouble selecting which songs to introduce to others who haven't heard of him. He has so many good ones
I always fall back to “Thrift Store Dress.” Best description of artists on the road IMHO
@@partsmanba I defer to "Sad Blue Eyes". The lyrics move me like few others.
Mike, I LOVE how you can talk so explicitly about this, and about every video. Love how you mix musicianship and humanity in one bubble. Keep it up, brother.
Wow! Just wow! Again, your reactions are heart felt and your loving soul shines through as always

Thank you for exposing us to this amazing talent. After this issue, I just went and bought a ton of his stuff on iTunes store.
Jeffrey is one of the best out there doing it. He’s also an incredibly kind and humble person to boot.
Wonderful break down. Jeffrey Martin came to me through the Apple Music algos and he’s amazing. That whole album is incredible. Brave post, thank you!

Adore Jeffrey! He's also hilarious at his live shows

That was my first encounter with Jeffrey as well such a great tune
I'm in tears. Something similar happened between me and my little sister (who is gay.) I was not expecting to feel this right now
What a masterpiece. Thanks for giving him the light.

Great discussion, great song. I found Jeffrey Martin accidentally on the tube and have been listening to him ever since.
I can disagree with most of what you described but thank you for introducing me to this amazing talent! I will have to explore his music for sure!❤
Damn I wish I had a voice like that

My favorite writer! “Golden Thread” is my favorite, but his entire one go around album is so good
I saw him a few years ago at a free gig here in Helena, Montana and fell in love with his album Dogs In The Daylight. Sooooooo good.
Thrift store dress…..
Saw him last weekend at Kilkenny Roots in Ireland. Great delivery of songs.
I love Jeffery Martin. Knew about him for a bit but got more into him a lot recently

Respect.
There's another Jeff Martin you should know about. Jeff Martin (guitarist) of the Tea Party, The Armada, and some solo albums.
You know when Mike doesn't pause or fiddle with his guitar while watching that it really is good... Jeffery Martin is awesome.
Loved that phrase you had at the 2 min mark.
Seeing him next weekend
Your improvisational riffs were sick. You should do that more often.
Personally I want more guitar. Unfortunately I am not poetic. Respect to all musicians. Especially Session guys.
😮 introducing me to another good one. I have to get back on guitar gate.😉
Angeline live is incredible live too. He is amazing.
You get a chance to see Jeffery Martin, do it. It's an experience you won't forget
Jeffrey Martin is special. He also teams up with another amazing person, Anna Tival. She's also singer songwriter from the PNW and has the ability lyrically to put you to tears. Give her " Black Umbrella" a spin.
Seem him twice in Atlanta. He’s badass.
He is my most played artist on Spotify
Voice reminds me of the great Colter Wall at times. Check out the La Honda session live in front of no one
You HAVE to do a video on Knocked Loose's new song Suffocate. Theres a part I feel like you would really like. If it were out at the time you posted that "brutal grooves" video I think it would have been the highlight of it.
Jeffrey has been my own little personal secret going on 10 years now. Just like Charlie Crockett and a few others, they are always my go to when someone says, pick a song..... I share their beauty whenever I can yet i want so desperately to keep them to myself because I know fame and fortune does not deserve them. The general public that fawns over Taylor Swift and others are not worthy of their beauty.
I just want them to survive another day like a beautiful hot house flower that I keep to myself. A symbiotic relationship where we both need each other to just barely survive...yet we both sustain.
And meanwhile my comments get shadow banned by fucking youtube
PLEASE TELL ME? Who of us are not afraid of who we really are?
Damn that’s a heavy hitter.
The best of this video are you fills...thats whats missing in my opinion...some smooth lead lines! :D ty again ;) and yet again i have to ask you about Lauren Spencer Smith - Flowers MTW Push! :D
Please check out the song “Hey Adam” by Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) it speaks to the same idea but in a little different tone
He does a song called Coal Fire as well. Worth a listen 🎼
Check out his other song “Poor Man” on Audiotree too. Another great song of his
Hey Michael can you put the link in the description bro

Ok , go on
