What gets me is that the emperor in the last samurai didn't have to send his army after Katsumoto. I get that he was being manipulated by the industrialists, but as Katsumoto himself said, "Command me, and I shall fall on my sword." If there's one thing Samurai were known for, it was loyalty to their lords above all others.
im just guessing since we can't know for sure but one to see how the new army would fair and two... to give the samurai an ending with the honor they deserved
@@MrRevan991 But the emperor considered Katsumoto to be more than just another samurai. The man was practically an IDOL to this young man. Not only did Katsumoto not even blame him for what his people suffered, but he even said he'd kill himself then and there if the emperor just ASKED.
Because no one said it, the samurai in the battle actually used guns. It was common practice for samurai to train with guns, but the Japanese imperial army had a lot better training and formation tgen they showed in the movie. The battle lasted 24 hours and the Imperial army was victorious with minimal casualties.
So true, They used katanas as last resorts, they primary were basically bazookas, and their artillery were giant, mechanical, wooden dragons, FUCKING DRAGONS

I hated how damn historically inaccurate that Tom Cruise movie was. The samurai used guns, a lot. So much so in fact, they had a martial art form based around the use of guns. Or rather muskets.
A lot of people don't understand how samurais fought 1.they were mostly Bowman 2. They weren't these skilful swordsman who were super intelligent, and use sneak full tactics to battle against their enemies and surprise attack know they were Bowman and Spearman. 3. The samurai code says that they fight head on die with honour to not sneak attack. That's how the samurai fought that's where the legend of the ghost of Tsushima came from, he abandoned the samurai code, and became a ronin who was using the sneak tactics and thinking, when the Mongols invade it, Japan, specifically, Tsushima, the same around the island, we're Bowman they didn't strategically plan it out they were on an upper Hill with bows and spears and waited for the Mongols the Mongols push so hard and with their superior shields, they were able to usually kill the 80 samurai that fought on that beach.

Matchlock firearms and actually the samurai during that time doesn't have enough weapons or ammunitions for long term uses
not at the final battle of Shiroyama, there were around 3 major battles during the Satsuma rebellion
