When I was almost 5 and beginning kindergarten, my mother prepared me to go out into the world by kneeling in front of me and telling me a very important thing. She told me to listen carefully and promise. She said, "You must never, ever tell another person, "No! You're wrong!" I promised. I acquired numerous ways to say "Ooh, I beg to differ" or my Kansas farm girl grandmother's "Oh, so?" I never used that phrase in 8 decades. Then a woman shouted it to me in a book discussion group at the public library. In the book, I had said I thought the female physician should have had a housekeeper to pull the curtains in the evening, turn on lights and have dinner ready for the teen-aged son of the doctor. I listened and soon understood that "single mother" was a special concept with this woman. In fact, many single moms have well-paid jobs and may or may not have done well in keeping the husband, By that, I mean they are not all victims or pitiful --- but this young woman was not able to see it that way. As for me, I yearn to be among kinder, better educated people. Soon!
