    When I was almost 5 and beginning kindergarten, my mother prepared me to go out into the world by kneeling in front of me and telling me a very important thing. She told me to listen carefully and promise. She said, "You must never, ever tell another person, "No! You're wrong!" I promised. I acquired numerous ways to say "Ooh, I beg to differ" or my Kansas farm girl grandmother's "Oh, so?" I never used that phrase in 8 decades. Then a woman shouted it to me in a book discussion group at the public library. In the book, I had said I thought the female physician should have had a housekeeper to pull the curtains in the evening, turn on lights and have dinner ready for the teen-aged son of the doctor. I listened and soon understood that "single mother" was a special concept with this woman. In fact, many single moms have well-paid jobs and may or may not have done well in keeping the husband, By that, I mean they are not all victims or pitiful --- but this young woman was not able to see it that way. As for me, I yearn to be among kinder, better educated people. Soon!

    I did not see this as worship. I am 70+. In my early 20’s, working retail, I studied and appreciated that less is more. A saying …. Old money sits quietly and observes, new money is the loudest voice in the room. I’ve never had ‘money’ but been told I look like old money. Trends are one season of fun and a waste of hard earned money. Saving up for one classic jacket p, often purchased in a consignment shop, was an investment and worth every penny. My closet, and sewing skills, is full and serves me well.

    I was curious to see how you would tie the material world with the philosophical and you did. Very interesting. It's not just about the quality of the dress your wearing but more about the quality of the person inside. Of course we always fall short of the person we want to be but it's in the trying that we grow as better individuals I think. What do I do? I am not boasting but I am sharing because if more of us did this one thing, what a better world it would be. It is this: I keep $20 in my handbag at all times. Then I ask God to put someone who needs it in my path - a homeless person perhaps. He does so now and then. To such a person, $20 can make the difference between a good day and bad one. $20 means a substantial lunch and hot coffee in the winter or cool drink in the summer. Not a lot I know but not pocket change either. I hope it has helped the people that I have met. But the thing is it's a gift to me too because it makes me realize how I could have been that person, that I am no better than anyone else, just fortunate. Oh, believe me, I'm one of those seniors who live mostly on Social Security, so you don't have to be rich to do this. Blessings to all here and, again, very good reporting.

    Did you know that people who occasionally use profanity tend to be more intelligent? Since this seems to be a personal essay on what is elegance, I find it difficult to imagine someone who is “elegant” not using language to its fullest extent. That doesn’t mean dropping the F bomb every other sentence. It means knowing when and how to use a profane word to express yourself. Before you start thinking about how to be elegant be yourself, be loving towards yourself, and work from there.

Maybe new leadership, setting an example of compassion, inclusion, and reason could help restore some calm and sanity. I hope the pendulum can swing back to more civility at least! Carolina Herrera would be even more elegant if she maintained her hair its natural dark color instead of faux gold. The way God made her would save her money at the hairdresser and she would be even more elegant.

    • @altitudeiseverything3163
      @altitudeiseverything3163 Місяць тому +5

      It’s a near certainty that her “natural” hair color is some shade of silver, grey, or white now (as *genetics and time* dictates) which would also be lovely. But to color or not, at any age, is an individual choice that each woman should make for herself…. No one else’s business.

    • @monicacappetta7017
      @monicacappetta7017 Місяць тому +3

      I have to disagree with you. Her natural hair color might not suit her at all. I think she looks lovely. As far as money at the hairdressers, I do not think that is a problem for her,
