  • I was very excited to get in a Ural motorcycle test ride at this year's ‪@GiantLoopMoto‬ Ride in Crane, Oregon. ‪@ExploreAdventureMoto‬ teamed up for one of the most fun motorcycle riding adventures we've had together, putting the Ural Gear Up to the test both on and off road, then switching halfway though so we each got to experience a motorcycle sidecar test ride. This was my first time in a sidecar motorcycle and it was a blast.
I've always wondered how it would feel to ride a Ural motorcycle, and this test ride really solidified what a unique sensation it is to get out on three wheels. Riding in the sidecar was also super fun but also a little terrifying.

Wife and I (each have our own) have been riding Urals since 2015. We have put in 50,000 miles each on them and are planning many more miles! Absolutely the most fun we've ever had. We just did an east coast tour from Georgia to Maine last summer. We run the 1WD versions (me on a Retro) and find them far more civil on highways and paved roads than the 2WD. You are right, we take all our gear with us with room to spare.

I don’t have a left foot, and my Ural Gear Up doesn’t care.
I have the hand shifter, and can ride as well as any able bodied person on this rig.
You haven’t lived until you take them camping. I may not get there as fast as the dual sport guys, but when I get there, I have all the creature comforts, & then some.
Sidecar rigs are different than any other machines, and it takes a very short time to really understand and get comfortable riding. Once you’re there, tho, it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

I LOVE the joy expressed in this vid. The idea of sidecars are really cool, but the practicalities are somewhat interesting to consider. Would definitely make motocamping easier and taking children and dogs along for a ride. Sell your quad and replace it with one of these. You know you want to do it, Ben!

The grating downshifts that you experience can be minimized by coordinated rev matching each change, as you would in a heel-toe operation of a manual gear box,. That's how I was taught to do it in the '60's, regardless of the bike's final drive geometry

Fun video. I've had one since I bought it new in 2021. After a relatively brief learning curve I got the hang of it (been on 2 wheels almost 40 years). Once you learn how it behaves in various situations, it is a much calmer ride that you show here. But it remains an absolute blast to ride. I've been on a couple of long camping trips--it worked very well. I've been on "stupid" off road tracks with huge rocks and made it through. The 2WD makes it fun and capable in snow and mud etc. As far as setup is concerned, I declined the awful windscreen and run it naked. The racks are great. There are only a couple of tire choices, and with any shenanigans at all like sliding the rear in left turns, you'll eat a rear tire in 1500-2000 miles. If you want one, buy it! There are bargains on used units too, but I wouldn't go much earlier than 2016 or you'll be dealing with an antique.

I have a 1995 Ural Deco (one-wheel-drive, two tone sidecar rig). So pre-electric start, pre-modern metallurgy, pre-fuel injection, pre-disc brakes and during the 1-liter of Vodka a day average consumption by the workers.
Despite all that, once sorted it is fun. The old 650 engine and gear box means they are not durable the way we think of most bikes (the more modern ones starting with the 750 engine are much better) but I just use it to drive the dogs around and go "big" monthly shopping.

My wife and I love camping on our Ural -- had it 6 months now. What a coincidence, I just posted on your video of the siskiyou panniers! Shifting requires a 'stomp' on the heel/toe shifter for a nice clean 'clunk'. It's a blast and also great for trips around town. I've had ours to 85... It cruises fine at 65/70 - hills and wind are a challenge, especially when loaded up. We trailered it up to Long Island and did Manhattan and Cupsogue Beach - it was fantastic in the city and in the sand! Two wheel drive!

I had a Ural for three years, until the warranty expired! It was a lot of fun when it was working, but that thing was always breaking down, having some sort of failure. I'd like to get another sidecar rig some day, but I think I'd like a Triumph, Moto Guzzi, or Royal Enfield with a sidecar. I had my brakes set up so that the foot brake activated the sidecar brake right away and only did the bike's rear tire when really stomping down, and of course the front brake lever only controls the brake for the front tire. Hitting the front brake only would cause the bike to turn left sharply and hitting the foot brake would cause the bike to turn sharp to the right, helping lift the sidecar. It was a blast to drift corners in the dirt. The whole experience of having the Ural was like riding an ATV on the street rather than a motorcycle experience. If the bike would have had the same level of reliability as any other motorcycles I've owned, I never would have gotten rid of it. But being left on the side of the road 1,000 miles from home waiting for parts from Russia sucks more than you can imagine. Or having the swing-arm break after dark on a twisty riverside road with your 12 y.o. daughter in the sidecar.... Never again for me!

Hacks: Roll on throttle, outfit pulls right; roll off throttle or apply brakes, hack pulls left. Front brake is still majority of braking power.
Cornering requires shifting weight to inside. Move those hips and hang off.
Once you go hack, you’ll never go back. Been riding Urals since 2004. Last motorcycle I’d ever sell.

I am looking to pick up my first Ural, after riding Harleys for decades, and I tend do disagree with your comment that the Urals are “not very practical.” While I agree that they are quite expensive, I live in upstate NY in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, and this is the only motorcycle that I can realistically see being able to ride 12 months per year.

I've owned a Ural since 2016. I bought it because I was having a problem holding the other bike I had at the time a BMW K75. The Ural combines the worst aspects of a car with the worst aspects of a motorcycle. Some of the thing you have be really careful about is if you turn to the right quickly the sidecar comes off the ground. This is called flying the car. When I took the 3 wheel licensing course in Washington they teach you to do it so you understand how it happens. I would practice flying the car and got to where I could keep it off the ground for a100 yards. The one I have is a 2013 which I've had a number of mechanical problems with. The new ones are probably much more reliable.

I bought my Ural about 2 years ago and just came back from my third holliday trip with it (from northern Switzerland to Corsica and back together with my wife). I personally have the "Classic Retro" model which is based on street version without 2wd but better road handling. What I can say is that riding a sidecar is something completely different to normal motorbikes. Instead of being on the quickest and most responsive vehicle that naturally wants to be the extension of your will, you now very much are riding the most independed minded donkey that is legally available who tells YOU if you are sitting upright or slanted to the left (in a right hand turn) and only follows your directional commands when you add some force to it. You really have to relearn riding and getting used to its quirks. One of which is the fact that everithing wants to take a little more time and overburdening your ride out of impatience can lead to some oil leaks due to overheating. Beware of its breaking habbits - forceful breaking especially in downhill right hand turns can be very dangerous as the bike has a tendency to break out to the left (into oncomming traffic) the harder you pull the breaks . The plus side is that - as hinted in this video - once you have famillarised yourself with that bike, it's some fun of its own and it can do things other bikes can't - like transporting a pile of 4 meter poles and ladders from home depot back home or taking you home safely over icy roads so you can ride it during winter without problems. The car we own certainly hasn't seen much of me for the last 2 years and at the moment, only my wife moves it once a week from our town to the next and back so it doesn't completely turn to stone at its place.

Jk. I kinda like it. I think it would be fun to have. I think they have some that let you lean and the sidecar leans with it, I’m guessing those are a little more high-performance, but I think this would still be fun just for around on.

I once delivered a sidecar to a guy that had it enclosed and had AC and heat for his pet poodles.

I’ve always wondered how a bike with sidecar would handle. 😎👍

It has no relationship to anything you think you know about riding a motorcycle. Yes, it is terrifying at first but then it becomes just fun in a different way. Most of your turning dynamics involve using the throttle (right turns) or brakes (left turns) to at least initiate the turn.

Be careful, Ural riding is addictive, as the owner of BMW GS Adventure and a Ural GU, don’t ask me how I know!

You should be careful on left turns, that shit can flip over 🤣
You TFL rock! You have Bukhanka and now got Urals! Next should be GAZ and later BelAZ! 🤣
And after that you can get Tachanka! 😂😂😂

I’ve had one for 3 years and I still smile and laugh like the idiot you were on your first ride. None of my other 4 bikes give me that sake laughing time. Too bad you didn’t fly the car with your buddy in there. It behaves more like a bike then. Best camping platform ever. Wife and I did NC yo Canada on largely dirt roads on MABDR and NEBDR. Get one!

Ooh, new media blurb for the Ural website! "I feel like my butthole is like one inch from the ground right now!" -Dork in the Road
I was on the fence about buying one of these maybe 10 years ago, back when they were like $14K, and I decided my money would be better spent elsewhere. Now they're $22K!? That's more than a frigging GSA or Pan America! Still, looks like fun...
