    I don't know how you get a child that small to be such a great actress(and I might not like to find out) but she is delivering an *EXPERIENCE* in that scene. That's not crying, that's not sobbing, that's not weeping, those are a child's _wails_

    As bad as I feel for Bernice, I also feel bad for Birdee. Having to watch her only daughter, obviously in pain, but also knowing she'd prefer to be with her father, and doesn't need her mother. Rough situation. Great scene. Mae crushed it.

    • @SuperMelrose1
      @SuperMelrose1 3 роки тому +19

      She totally crushed it. But I think she does need her mother. But it’s more that Bernice wanted someone to blame, so it was Birdie. The grass is greener, so she wanted to be with her daddy.

      Birdee showed good parenting in this scene she let her daughter’s heart brake and picked her up afterwards

    • @herbsuperb6034
      @herbsuperb6034 3 роки тому +21

      @@LeahWalentosky Indeed she did. She had to let Bernice see for herself that her Dad wasn't who she thought he was, even though it would hurt. Sandy said later that she wasn't even supposed to go pick Mae up during the scene. She was just supposed to stay on the porch. But she was so moved by Mae's performance she just had to go to her and scoop her up. Mae, to her great credit being the age she was, never broke character. Turned out a very powerful scene that made her a child actress legend. Those famous water works of hers have been put to great use time and time again. When Mae Whitman cries, everybody cries.

      Men like that always get their come uppance because years down the line when the kids grow up they never forget and whilst some forgive others don't. Fathers like Bill lose out long term because by the time they realise what a big fucking mistake they've made they're relegated to second best throughout their kids adult lives like at weddings, when grandchildren arrive and if they're invited for xmas etc I'm sure its very lonely indeed knowing that your kid will never include you in their lives like they do others and you can't say a thing because its your own fault.
      I never realised until years later when I watched this as an adult what a fucking selfish arsehole Bill really was. He returned on the day of Ramoana's funeral when he knew Birdee would be grieving for her mother to ask for a divorce after already blowing her and Bernice's lives apart because he fucked her best friend and then leaves without saying bye to his only child and then tells her there's no room for her in his life but she's his little princess and drives off leaving her sobbing and broken hearted and its down to Birdee to pick up the pieces. What a cunt he is!

    Just because you 'fell in lust' with another woman doesn't mean you can simply STOP being a father until you have the time again. Especially after telling your child 'I want you with me'. Just gross and selfish behavior. And by the time his other relationship ends his daughter will want nothing to do with him, rightfully so.

  • @ThatLadyDray

    People tend to think it's strictly about leaving the spouse/mate as to why the spouse/mate is struggling being civil towards them. No. It's things like THIS. When you see your child's heart broken ESP by someone who is supposed to protect it, you be ready to put your hands on a mug for causing so much pain. So being civil becomes a struggle. Understandably so.

    This scene makes me cry every time I see it. I’ve had such a similar thing happened to me and my daughters. The way Sandra Bullock knows what’s going to happen and chooses to let it happen because she knows that Bernice needs to understand -the way she sits, and lets it happen because she knows it’s essential. Mae Whitman was the most unbelievably believable character/actress for this part. This is the most amazing scene and gets me every time.

    I had this experience. Not the exact circumstances, but knowing, just knowing I was everything to Daddy cuz he was everything to me, but him leaving anyway. Later he took my brothers and not me and there was a scene a lot like this. Except my mother didn’t help or hug me, she yelled at me. He’d left me with an angry woman who’d never wanted me. Then he died and she erased his memory from us all. This scene, back when it came out, made me sob so hard I could barely breathe.

She didn't hold it against her. She didn't unload all of her anger on her she was just there. Its horrible what he did, but it showed Bernice how much of a douche bag he is and that he really didn't care for her at all.

      She's a child who's been daddy's little princess all her life. I would bet Bill was the parent who spoiled her and enjoyed the fun parts whilst Birdee had to do the hard work and be the bad guy. Kids don't always see things through adult eyes. In Bernice's eyes its Birdee's fault because she left, moved them to Texas away from her dad and her friends where she was happy and is struggling to adjust to her new home and school where she's being bullied. It took Bill telling her Connie comes before her and then driving away leaving her devastated to open Bernice's eyes as to who the bad guy really was and believe that is utterly heartbreaking to see the actual truth. Parent's like Bill will eventually get their come uppance years down the line because kids never forget that kind of pain, some may forgive but not of all them do. By the time parents like Bill realise their mistake its too late they end up relagated to second best in their adult children's lives like graduations, weddings and when grandchildren come along they all lose out on being a part of it.

    Broken promise.
    She deserves it, because she is unsympathetic towards her mother and blames her for the divorce.

      She's a kid she doesn't know the ins and outs of her parents relationship. I would guess Bill was the parent who spoiled Bernice and did all the lovely fun stuff whilst Birdee did the hard work. In Bernice's eyes its Birdee's fault because she was the one who left and uprooted them to Texas and Bernice had to leave her home, school and friends and adjust to a new home and school where she was bullied and only had one friend and her cousin for support. That's why Birdee didn't help Bill out as he put it because she was bearing the brunt of his selfishnesses so she had to let Bernice see the truth herself. It took Bill walking out and leaving her sobbing because he's put the woman who helped break up her family before his "little princess" to open Bernice's eyes believe me that is utterly heartbreaking and will probably do some damage to Bernice.
