West Des Moines has four traffic light mounted Whelens. There’s this ex-finback R4, a normal R4 that replaced a 2001-SRN that stood in the same spot (and has no controller), a WPS-4004 on an interstate overpass with a new Type I on it, and a brand new R4 that was recently installed. The city’s 13 other Whelens are all on standard pole mounts.
Over by the cedar Rapids airport you can hear whelens from over 2 miles away clear as day and on a good day you can hear fairfaxs 2906s Even have an audio recording of fairfaxs tests from the cedar Rapids airport area.
Yes, this is a digital ESC-864. Err on the side of caution, as WestCom is notoriously picky in the winter about testing. If it’s below freezing, they usually will not test them. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting their last test for this year in November, regardless of the temperature.
You’d be looking at around $18,000 USD for a Vortex R4 and Type I panel. If you wanted to get it installed and hooked up, that goes up to $24,000 (depending on the dealer). They are not cheap.
Very nice!
As of December 7th, 2024, this siren has been 2030'd. I doubt Fairmeadows will last long either.
Traffic light mounted. That's a first for me

There's another 4004, and that's by the Jordan cemetery.
That is correct. Are you from the Des Moines area?
Yes. That Whelen was the first one I filmed. Also there's another wow 4004 over by where Brown's woods park and walnut woods state park is
Idk the pitch, bc I have never been to that siren

Oddly enough Fairfax's sirens sound in attack, not alert. Makes sense given that they don't rotate, so that makes them easier to hear.
Nice job! this reminds me of one of Lewisville‘s Whelens
Great video!
Great recording!
What controller is this? Digital ESC 864? That's a first for me, which I might go to in November! Can't decide on the 2t22 th0.

@@mnsirens So I should probably hit up the 2t22 in november
how much us a vortex?

These aren't that loud, but punchy if you ask me
Yeah, and this one is lower-toned. The Vortex's that are around 550 Hz absolutely rock.
@milespeterson5049 This was 4 years ago, dude.
Would of been cool if Minneapolis MN did the same thing with their Vortexes just like they did with their Traffic Signal mounted Omni Alert OA-2s
R u sure this is 465? It sounds like a 450hz to me but I could be wrong
Yes, I’m sure.
@@mnsirens ok now ot sounds like a 465.
@@mnsirens idk if it was my speakers or my ears
@@mnsirens Update: As of December 7th, 2024, this has been upgraded to a 2030.
Did this by chance have a head swap?
No, you can see where the fin was mounted on the head. The rotator was the only thing replaced.
This was at one point a 2001 SRN though.
@@natej4230Do you know when they had the SRNs? I'm actually from West Des Moines myself.
@@HSETM That was over 10 years ago but most of them directly replaced SRNs
@@natej4230 What year did they get replaced?
Nice
Nice!
