T7 community been on the pulse with this for awhile now. They were introduced to char tier lists in endurance sets (FT10 by the Korean players) which is a departure to chars in 2/3 tourney settings where even power bottom chars like Lucky Chloe are still fearsome because she's high/risk damage. And you only have so many rounds to adapt so if you can't play your clean defensive game, you are getting slapped around. People also knew about how certain chars are VERY strong in wood/teal low ranks just because their play style preys on those players lack of movement and defensive awareness. So you had the Williams sisters being able to climb pretty high until an opponent could defend their pressure and punish them accordingly.

I love this story. Recently my games design course has started hosting its own fighting game tournament because my lecturer and one of the other staff had a grudge to settle in street fighter vs x-men.
Neither of them made it to the finals lol, with my lecturer losing to someone using Poison in USF4 who had never played fighting games before. It's finally given me the motivation to try and get better and show off my (currently non-existent) skills.
I always look at tier lists as an estimation of the potential power of characters. When I look at the same characters from my perspective, I'm looking at it like "which characters will/do give me the most trouble and for what reasons?", which is a perspective that will shift over time as I improve. The meta of what I'm good at and what I'm weak against will always be evolving.

But as a kid who doesn't know the difference between a deep game and a shallow one, they won't be scared by the depth, and will be attracted by the fact that these games are cool, violent, and fast paced, with sexy and badass characters. I know that's what drew me in as a kid. What teenage boy could see a game with babes like Millia or Baiken and badasses like Zato or Venom and not want to play?

@@mattyryon I wouldnt really agree. Most tier lists for noobs simply place the characters by ease of use. They usually have a philosophy of "This character is easy to use and understand which makes winning with them easier so theyre top tier." But if you get a beginner that knows how to play a more complex character, that low tier is all of a sudden a huge problem because nobody understands how the character works so everyone starts getting bodied by that character.

      @Luchamasterfit 2 роки тому +4

This isn't really the case though. Tier lists quite often reflect something other than top end potential strength. They also often represent a reward per time invested ratio. If you spend your limited time playing say, Anji, you will be weaker per hour put in because of the general weaknesses in his kit. That being said, character simplicity can skew this. A very difficult to play top tier like fox in SSBM, you may not reap as much value. However another top tier, like Falco, who isnt easy to play mind you, is incredibly rewarding as a reflection of time put in, because his general moveset is so strong.
A tier list is an easy metric for people to see what will be the best use of their limited time. Sure Zain's Roy can beat 99% of the player base using the top tiers. However I would NEVER suggest a new player pick up Roy because the amount of time they would be required to invest would be dramatically higher as opposed to hell, 50% of the rest of the roster.
If my goal is to hit celestial, a stronger tool makes more sense to most people. I can hammer a nail with rock, but its much easier to use a hammer and even more so just use a nail gun.

I couldn't remember characters move lists and even if I did know how to do the move I wanted I might not get the motion right. basic bnbs took an eternity to get down. rather than play online I just went through the story with each character, where I mostly just used the normals and specials I could without worrying about combos. I now think that the game isn't really for me, I mostly play Arcsys games now, but I will always have fond memories of it and the other games I tried while still in the early beginner phase of my journey.

This is exactly what I always said, tier lists at highest levels are useless to medium level players or low level even... since nobody will be close enough to mix the enemy with a Millia or Chip as much as to justify being hit twice and exploding, and none of them will know exactly how to counter stupid stuff or punish it. I have few funny memories of my scrubiest days, when spamming in KOF the multiple kicks with Robert and people falling for it over and over lol, then the HDM in 2K2 being unblock-able, or shit like that, also how people were scary of Ralf punch because it can't be blocked, or how easy were some characters to use compared to others.
I will never forget when I was playing in the arcades (I sux with stick and at that time it was even worse since I was only used to play with Keyboard and trying to adapt to Joypad) I played against a guy who chose RUGAL and other 2 characters, while I was with Kyo, K' and Kula (being Kula the easiest to me for playing because the slow peace on its BNB combo), I basically destroyed the guy's two first characters and a friend of him at his said said "Woah man you are in trouble" but he answered "Don't worry, I still have Rugal" (oh that was a 2K2 with all gauges and Rugal unlocked), then he spammed some shit and went into full punishable mode, so I ran with Kula and... BNB (not even used the Super), so he woke up super and got punished again lol, until his Rugal died, it was SO FUN, but that is not the funniest part, because he stayed at my side after he lost watching me play against the IA, and I got rekt by the AI of stage 2...
So... for me it was easier to beat a guy using Rugal with max gauges and spamming supers while using only my BNB than beating the Stage 2 of KOF2002 against the AI, he then was shocked not able to understand what the heck was going on.

This also draws away that weird relationship of treating how to learn FGs like 'homework' like how some new FG players approach the genre now. The kids are thinking of the game reactively based on what they know and what they can execute and trying to win off that. They aren't trying to punish themselves hitting the lab and feeling bad when they can't hit the combo they practiced for 2 hours straight on netplay when they need more in game reps to get a feel for the game. They understand its a marathon and they wouldn't be committed to doing it if it wasn't for the point of having fun to begin with.

I had to stay with my cousins for a few weeks, one sister and two brothers, and I happened to have skullgirls on my laptop so I decided to see if they'd like it. I told them about motion inputs, showed them how to do a fireball a charge back and let them have at it. I was playing fukua so I already knew they'd develope a meta of trying to keep me out. First week their picks were beowulf, big band and parasoul. Third week, the day before I had to leave they the beowulf kid was playing exclusively eliza (even though he was very against picking the girl character at first), the big band kid switched to beowulf trying to beat his brother and parasoul kid was nearly keeping me out with peacock. All characters with either big buttons or spammable moves. They naturally developed tactics to counter me and even eachothers playstlyes and were adapting to their meta as it changed daily. Although they did ban me from using robo fortune because none of them could deal with the faster projectiles. Its amazing how much improvement you can have in three weeks just with someone who knows the basics and a desire to get good enough to beat them.

I think that perception of "you have to learn everything on the planet before you go play the game" is a weird but unfortunate by-product of getting older. Kids play to play, because they haven't completely integrated that mentality of being incredibly prepared for everything, whereas a lot of older players may have that kind of sentiment ingrained deep within them from, well, being an adult, where everything needs (and kinda expects) preparation and research if you want to do the best.

That's such a cool class! I had a similar, though small, case happen when I played Street Fighter 4 with my 2 young cousins. They didn't even have all the characters unlocked, but you could see they already created a meta. I don't know anything about Street Fighter so bear with me. Level 1 was Bison. He had this big ass punch attack that they loved to spam to punish approaches. I lost a few times, then started to counter it and they started to play a bit different. I must have poked the bear though, because then they brought out level 2. My cousin, after I start beating his Bison, swaps to El Fuerte. I almost immediately see why. Dude's got like a standing overhead or something to punish low blocks. After he hits, he's kinda spaces a bit so fast moves don't seem to help much. I ended up beating him there too after a few losses.
I think the coolest part of that experience was just to see how these kids were trying to figure this thing out and deal with these problems. They don't know about us nerds over here, so they work together to solve these problems and learn. Really cool to see how much fun you can have without just following whatever the real "meta" is.

Hmm, 6th grade is about when I stopped paying attention to fighting games when I was a kid. I don't think we got dial-up until the next year, so the only way I knew how to do MK3 and UMK3 fatalities was from my Game Informers. Now, I have this hilarious image in my mind of The Dustloop Encyclopedia sitting on the shelf at the bookstore and me trying to convince my mom to buy this 1000-page book for me. And I probably would have read have the entire damn thing just for the interest factor, learned little from it, still been terrible against non-computer components (a.k.a people), and I still would've been happy. I guess, trying to get back into my 6th-grade mind, in terms of introducing the kid to that level of information, these are my thoughts...
Yeah, I agree that everybody should probably be made aware of it, because otherwise, you've introduced favoritism into the tournaments, and that could sour a lot of kids and make the whole innocent enterprise fall apart. I would only do it as part of lesson on responsibility, restraint, priorities, etc. Tell the kids, hey, if you're really interested in learning more, you may eventually find very detailed resources on the internet. And tell them that it's not a good idea to lose perspective and get totally sucked into that. It's not worth starting to not do your homework, it's not worth getting so into it that it feels more like it's become homework instead of being fun, and so on. Like, always keep asking yourself, kiddos, "Am I having _fun_ with this _fun_ video game?" But it seems like the author is already so far along with fighting games in class and has such a cool relationship with his class that this isn't a weird, uncomfortable, bizarre, out-of-nowhere discussion to have with them.
An argument FOR telling them about this is that may fill a bit of gap in their intellectual lives if they're bored. Go watch "Why Gifted Kids Are Actually Special Needs" by Dr. K at HealthyGamerGG. It's pretty eye opening. School is very one-size-fits-all, and for certain kids, it so far below them that have feel no challenge, they don't what it's like to work for something, don't know how to deal with and learn from failure, and it has real detrimental effects later on. Ask me how I know. Video games, on the other hand he points out, move at exactly the pace of the child. You learn video games by trying, failing, succeeding, going a step higher, repeat, at your pace, and it made so much sense to me to hear that. So, some kids might really enjoy having that ability to take their own dive into the more detailed aspects. BUT, BUT, BUT, they need to be counseled up front on how to not let it take over their life, especially if they're doing it for wrong, non-healthy reasons. There's a hell of a lot more videos on his channel about video game addiction, especially in kids. But I definitely think it's worth responsibly throwing it out there since the whole situation has already been thoroughly primed with these tournaments. 99% of the kids won't care, but you don't necessarily know which kid will bite the hook. It may not be Zappa kid. Zappa kid may be very content where is. It might be the quiet kid in the corner that wants to beat Zappa kid and just doesn't know where to start. As an adult of too many years, I NEVER assume anymore that anyone will eventually find information. I have countless life experiences disproving that. Just properly advise and warn before giving opening the floodgates, though.

Tier lists are interesting cause I think most people go to them to answer the question "who should I play?". A lot of times people just say pick who you think is cool, but that can be a hard thing for a new player to answer, especially if they're new to fighting games. All they'd have to go off is character design which based off your tastes could give you a real rough start.
Alright story time, when Smash 4 came out I had a friend who was adamant that he had to play Diddy Kong cause "he's the best character". I assume he got it from an early tier list or something. It was his first Smash game and he didn't have fun with it, probably cause Diddy was too technical and all his cool stuff was locked behind that. I tried to get him to just play someone else, but he refused cause 'Diddy was the best'. Within a week he never touched the game again.
When Smash Ultimate came out we played on my copy without him really getting a chance to look things up. He ended up just jumping around the cast until he found Bowser's suicide throw and that was the greatest thing in the world to him. If he was able to pull that off once in a match he was happy, win or lose.
To go back to the question of, "who should I play?", I think it be interesting to change the way tier list are done. Instead of ranking characters on a single axis of how good they are you could give them different ratings. I.E. Fun, Strength, Difficulty ect.... That way new players could sort the cast based off what they're looking to get out of the game. I don't know maybe people would still hone in on who top player said was the best.

Something I've been doing is buying up steam keys for this game whenever I see it drop below 5 bucks and send them out to my non FGC friends and help them learn. Worst case scenario, I waste a few bucks. Best case scenario, I ignite a lifelong passion for fighting games in someone who's never really given them a real shot.

I'm a teaching major, and if I ever get the chance to do this with students I am going to. I love fighting games, and I love sharing my love for fighting games with people who are willing to learn those games. If we could hang out on a free day and have a strive tournament or even some other game like third strike, that would be great.

It’s honestly fascinating to see how a fighting game meta develops in a vacuum with players who know little to nothing about fighting games

About a year ago I started playing tough love arena much more with a friend. A month into us playing (and me beating his ass) I asked him to make a tier list. Unsurprisingly, my character was at the very top and his was at the very bottom. A week ago I asked him to make another one and it looked so different. Not related much to the video but I love this story a ton

That's more relevant than you think it is. Tier lists are based on knowledge and experience. The longer you play, the more you discover. The more you discover, the more your opinion may differ. This tier list story, along with yours, prove that tier lists don't mean much if you don't play the game for value other then leisure. Knowledge about the best character in the game (at that moment )only goes so far. And once that character goes down the list, the concern goes away. Playing the game for fun shouldn't care about who's the best character. It's in the third word of the last sentence. Fun.

Reminds me of playing brawl in 5th grade. Some kid brought a wii on the last day of school and the meta was a disaster. Meta knight was top tier but not because normal meta knight stuff but because his rapid jab went all around him and noone could space attacks. The counter was projectiles and ppl didnt know how to do side bs so they went samus and ran away and spammed charge shot, then pit and zelda went way up but noone knew how to switch back from sheik so zelda players were effectively playing with 2 stocks and they could randomly turn into a effectively useless character.

God, this video takes me back to when I was in 8th grade and a teacher brought an mvc3 setup and we were all playing with simple controls. Dante was banned after a couple hours since everyone was using him. It's been 8 or so years so my memory is hazy, but the characters people saw the most success with outside of dante was Deadpool, haggar, Spider-Man, wesker, and viewtiful Joe. I kinda want to try an experiment now with people unfamiliar with the genre to see what meta they come up with
