    with each passing day i realize more and more the quality of the music of the 70's. This song is healing.

    I think the pinnacle of live performances of this song was done on the 1973 Japan Lotus tour. Talk about a magical moment in time! A stellar performance!

      Agreed 💯. And this was not that. This was beautiful and soothing as improvisational jazz, I just far prefer the classic song structure with the double speed section at the end, such amazing tension and climax.

      The Lotus version is still my favorite of any song by anyone at any time. That one is musical perfection.

      The San Francisco Fillmore West version is great too. It’s shorter, but it’s one of Carlos’ most tasteful solos

      If you're talking about the performance with the Wayne Shorter Band! It's on here, a 19 minute version! That's the best one, I've heard!

      The original members playing IAN is amazing. Their chemistry just flowed. It was a total jam with passion, soul and groove. Though it may be good, it pales in comparison. ua-cam.com/video/s-s2uFgMRjA/v-deo.html

  • @Chrisdrumz

    Huh? Why would he go and not do the piano buildup part after the quiet solo?? It's a magnificent transition. Why discard it? Was watching and waiting and it never happened.

    • @quicksite
      @quicksite 2 роки тому

      Yes exactly... The man's a genius and has every right to go a different way this time or anytime... But I agree with you, and of course he knew damn well he'd be trolling his long time Santana fans by giving us the always unique & gripping tension of that slow buildup of signature Carlos bending long notes punctuated by brilliant bongos and congas.... where we absolutely follow the timing, anxiously awaiting those two inimicable notes that usher in the epic release and sheer delight of one of the most beautifully melodic keyboard compositions in the entire Carlos catalog...
      ... Only to this time confound our expectations and deny us that gorgeous pleasure and climax, replacing it instead with a much longer and yes beautifully performed jazz improvisation trading off keyboards and guitar... but never quite building to a peak before it ultimately resolves into a rather standard "slow down the music" artificial ending.

    NO! Just no, Carlos! As always you play beautifully with unexpected improvisation, but as much as I like the idea of an extended jazz interpretation, you cut the whole Latin rhythm out of it and ruined the coolest part of the song, where it gears up from very slow to a much faster pace, it's one of the all-time greatest and most beautiful segments people have been enjoying for so many decades.

      Lotus and his other albums from his jazz/rock era such as Caravanserai were probably his biggest musical breakthrough. Heck, Lotus is one of the best albums of the 70s. He was making history back then. You can't expect him to reinvent the wheel every time he does a tour. Plus he's 72 now. He has nothing to prove. He's a legend.
