  • todays video shows you The Best Techniques For Catching Monster Musky!, ! ive been fishing and guiding for musky in the Niagara River and Lake Erie since 1978. I wanted to share with you some of the tips and techniques I’ve used over those years to help you get started. The way we caught them and the size of the fish has changed a lot over those many years but the excitement of latching into a Great Lakes Musky and the thrill you feel, is still the same. Back in the 70’s, when we exclusively fished the upper Niagara River, most of us didn’t realize that the true monsters were living in Lake Erie during the summer and coming into the Buffalo Harbor in the fall. As a member of Muskies inc/Niagara River chapter, we began to lobby NY state to increase the size limit and eventually the Niagara Musky Association finally got the job done and set at 54”. We conducted a tagging program, that helped in the eventual size increase. I never imagined that it was possible to reach that size but on November 17, 2013 we caught one of the biggest in the Buffalo Harbor area and i explain how we did it. The fish was 56” and around 50lbs as we used a 40 Lb boga to weigh it and it easily bottomed it out. Stan is a big man and made it look like an average musky, but believe me it was HUGE. It looked like a gator going into my mammoth net. Hope you enjoy this video and please like, subscribe and make a comment. I really enjoy hearing from you.
    Here’s a video about scouting for walleye if you’ve been off the water for a while…it applies to musky as well

    So Jim you hook up your lead core line right to planer board with know issues?

    • @JimHanelyfishing
      @JimHanelyfishing  6 місяців тому

      Hey. Thanks for writing. No problems with that connection as lead core is basically braided line with a piece of lead Inside. I sometimes use the OR18 release from offshore tackle to keep the lead core in place if needed

      @JimHanelyfishing thanks Jim , so what's is the make of your planer board that would hold my led core real good, thanks again

      The OR 12s are what I use for walleye fishing. The ones i used in the musky video were magnums, which are overkill for walleye. The offshore tackle web site has everything you need. Thanks again for reaching out Happy new year!

    Can you let me know what type of lead core you are using? I’m having trouble finding some heavy duty stuff for the harbor.

      I get mine from bass pro shops, beyond braid in 36 lb test. Thanks for watching.

      @@JimHanelyfishing thanks for getting back to me. I’m nervous using 36 lb but I’ll trust you if it’s not breaking on you!
      For my reg braid line I use 80 so I wasn’t sure if I should trust 36…
      Thanks for the tip!!

      @andrewporzio9045 we caught that 56 incher on 36 lb lead and actually straightened out the hooks on another fish that same day due to the drag being too tight. Set the drag just right…It works fine. Check out my video on trying the mono to lead know. Catch a big one!

      It’s the chance to catch a fish that’s as long as you are but it’s also like hunting for a trophy buck…you have to put the time in. Thanks for watching Matt
