"He is Conan,
he doesn't cry. So I cry for him."
Took this to heart since I was a kid. I've even tried to cry but just a knot in the throat and a crocodile tear. I am a Cimmerian!
"Why are you crying?"
"He is Arnold, he doesn't know how to cry, so I cry for him"

This has to be my number one favorite quote in movie history: King Osric : There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child.

To date, this is the best fantasy movie score ever produced. The opening theme just sends chills down my spine with its intensity. Very memorable. Absolutely love it.
Absolutely yes.Same here
Yes, just cheap crap today, the creativity is dying in this world.
Lord of the Rings soundtrack is extremely good. But this is probably the best Sword & Sorcery soundtrack.
Maybe best soundtrack. Period . It adds so much to the movie
Yeah, this would otherwise have been a forgettable sword-and-sandals film, but Basil Poledouris had SKILL.
"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, and why we died. All that matters is that today, two stood against many. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you!"
Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to bear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!
That is the perfect pick up line...
I see you are also a person of culture. ⚔️
This is true
@@themoviejunky3918 second only to “Can you tell me what is best in life”? If they answer “To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women”, then you know you found a keeper, LOL!!!
Oceans drinking Atlantis is the appearance of the Persian Gulf and the subsequent arrival of Sumerians. This was during the bronze age collapse, and then the Persians came to Haltamti.
There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child.

@@morganrobinson8042 Exactly. After all, his father's sword breaks by Conan's atlantean sword during the battle of the mounds. Conan picks it up and ponders upon it. The message is not lost. His friends, living and dead, were more help to Conan, than any sword.

People are way too cynical these days. There are good movies around still, they may not get the the big press and box office of the hero cgi fests but that is more on us the cutomers than the creators.
But yes this movie and its score are very special to me too.
I know right? People think of 80s films and they think of over the top action, dramas with big heart, and, of course, HIGH ADVENTURE. By 2040 people will think of the 2010s in cinema with one word:

"Before the Lord of the Rings, there was an age undreamed of, where Conan the Barbarian was released..."
Frodotai: "My movie is earlier"
Conan: [chuckles] "Crom laughs at your four hobbits. He laughs from his mountain!"
Frodotai: "My movie is earlier. It's the 1978 animation from Ralph Bakshi. Your movie was released four years later"
Conan's first movie was released four years after the first Lord of the Rings movie...
And Conan's first story was published FIVE years before the publication of The Hobbit.
REH started writting Conan, not in 1932 as you think (publication of _"The Phoenix on the Sword",_ first "proper" Conan story), but in early 1931 _("People of the Dark",_ published midd-1931, being the first outline of what would later become Conan). Then again, JRRT started writting _"The Hobbit"_ in _early 1930_ (when he put down in paper the famous words "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit", having finished the book in 1932, around the same time as REH had finished _Phoenix._ JRRT wrote it for his children, but feedback from other authors (and from the 10-old sons of said authors) persuaded him to publish the book in 1937.
TL:DR: Not just the movies. The Hobbit was actually written BEFORE Conan.
Now, if we were to talk about King Kull... ;-D
@@notfeedynotlazy Ackchually, Tolkien's legendarium was first commenced during the First World War. There are writings from same which ended up in the Silmarillion.

It's really good and on point and quite appropriate. Others have a few as well though. To name a few of my other faves: Vangelis(should have gotten at least 3-5 Oscars in my opinion. The only one that is in the same league is Ben Hur.
@@rogergoddard1234 Ben Hur however does not reach the epicness of this. Said this, Poledouris always admitted that Miklós Rózsa (Ben Hur's composer) was his main inspiration. However Poledouris combined also his Greek Orthodox heritage and the injection of the latter produced a massively epic result which speaks to the soul.

Soundtrack for "Conan the Barbarian" is good, no doubt. But within I am hearing a lot of the music of Ottorino Respighi and some of Miklos Rozsa. Even Rozsa in his first credited score ("Knight Without Armour" 1937) used music of Reinhold Gliere. Some of the choral music here is reminiscent of ""Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff and of "Daphnis and Chloe" by Maurice Ravel . Undoubtedly, there is more to all of this. Everyone has stood on the shoulders of giants!
Poledouris himself acknowledged these sources of inspiration.
My favorite scene from the Destroyer is at the end, when Jenna is giving Conan's entourage jobs. Then she looks at Conan and says "Rule Shalazar with me." He turns her down, and at that moment you relaize she has truly grown up, because instead of pleading and whining she lets him go.
I'm reading the Gor novels by John Norman and this is the perfect music to be listening to while reading them for the fourth or fifth time over the years. I have too because the last book was released in August last year. I was 14 when I picked up Tarnsman and I'm 64 now as Warriors comes out. They've never lost their magic for me. 🙂 I'm as familiar with Gor as I am with our own. I wanted some "barbaric" music to listen to, and I received it with these wonderous soundtracks. I can picture the love between Tarl and Talena, slave girls dancing in a paga tavern, the cities cylinders, Tarl being introduced to his mount, the legendary Ubar of the Skies; magistic, beautiful, fierce, dangerous, sable, war tarn; the insect like Gods of Gor, Priest-Kings; Pa-kurs march on Ar. I see the majestic Sardar (the Priest Kings home), Port Kar, Treve, Thentis, Tarls home stone city of Ko-ro-ha, Turin, the Northern Forests, and the Panther Girls who rule there and their defeat of the many men who tried to enslave them. I've watched the Conan movies, have a loving for them, but the music, to me, makes me think of the Counter-Earth Gor, and her landscapes, cities, customs and strange animals, like the tapuk, tarsk, ost, urt, and magnificent tarns.
Gor is an underappreciated fantasy saga with a far reaching cult following of RPers and lifestylers. I spent quite a few years involved in the online RP side of it with an amazing community of people creating some incredible stories of our own all set on the familiar lands of Gor. Great Fun

If Basil Pouledaris had been born in 18th century Europe he would be a household name today, of that I have no doubt. Few composers are able to reach such heights of greatness, never mind a mere film score composer.

"That is good!"
Conan the Barbarian is one of my all time favorite movies. It was the movie closest to the original stories of Robert E Howard. Conan the Destroyer however went with the comic book version Conan. A big, dumb, mussel bound, barbarian with a huge sword wearing a loincloth. What a sad thing it was, a missed opportunity to make a movie francize to rival Star Wars. Then they made that Red Sonja movie that bombed finishing off any hope of the producers correcting their mistake.😥
Absolutely agree.
It's a good example of how you can strike a balance between an in-name-only fantasy romp, and so slavish a reacreation of the books that it doesn't translate to screen very well. Just enough iconic moments (tearing out the throat of the vulture, the theft from the tower, Belit's vow) that fans of the books would recognise, yet the movie is very much its own thing.
it will be Conan the King.. we hope so
Epic! Kind of western sounding, kind of eastern sounding, totally original and evocative, just like it would have sounded, between the time the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Aries...
a Greek composed it, forever chained to the battlegrounds of East and West, where Plato first time wrote for Atlantis.... you are so right!
by far the best soundtrack of all times
The best soundtrack of all time. Gonna be hard to ever top this.

Some soundtracks are forgotten just after seeing the end credits.
Some of them survive the film, the actors, and even the story they were highlighting.
This is the case of this soundtrack which is as unforgettable as its author was discreet.
B. Poledouris left us much too soon, but he left us an unalterable masterpiece where we find all the great themes and emotions of an opera.
