Had mine, exactly same spec but non X Drive 2 years now and totally agree. 25k miles, average 41.6 mpg, great handling, great stereo, and quick enough. The lift and coast is mental when you start catching people up. Brilliant everyday car, but would love a bit more punch, 330d or maybe a 330e for me next time, would be interested to see you test a 330e. Great video Joe, and it was the Chris Harris video that made me get mine 👍
Great to hear Wesley, always like hearing this from actual owners :-) The 330e/530e and 740Le all look great on paper, in reality they're a little bit disappointing, unless you have charging points at each end of your journeys of course. The next gen Hybrids will be twice as good. But yeah I need to review a 330e or 530e. Cheers
Ron P cheers for that. I thought that would be the case regarding the handling. Ideally I want the 335d for the power, but I don't want X Drive which is why I was thinking 330d. I'll have another think once the new 3 comes out, its not like I "need" a new car

Great video Joe. You're costing me a fortune. First a 140 and now a 335d from TRL. The X drive has SE springs so a swap for AC schnitzer ones is the way to go.
Haha sorry Mark! Oh I'd heard the Lci cars (like this one) now come with the stiffer M sport springs, it certainly didn't feel too soft.... Maybe I'm wrong
I've had mine 4 years now. It's got to go back next month as it's my company car. I've loved it, just need to decide if I go for another one or an Audi AWD. The mpg on it is awesome. Top video fella.
Review is superb as always Joe. Car needs 2 more cylinders to be good fun tho. Owned an ex demo 15 plate 530d with every option known to man and averaged 39mpg in 6 months over 32k miles. What an engine so refined and awesome performance.
I have a manual 320d xDrive saloon (f30) and think it's a superb and competent car. I actually prefer the way diesels drive these days compared to their petrol equivalent. This is my fourth 3 series and its definitely the best one I've owned. I can get over 500 miles from a tank doing short journeys and the insurance is less than £300 which is cheaper than our older and less powerful Ford S max to insure . You need to make sure you get one with the right spec if you're buying second hand as a lot of things still don't come as standard - like rear folding seats and a decent sound system.
This may be my next car. I test drove 328d touring last year and loved it. I wish I could get it with the six diesel in the wagon because I go camping and mt biking.
Cheers Chris! Yeah after watching it back I realised I said that, doh! To be fair, 50% of the drives were fairly spirited and I didn't play my MPG game. Thanks for the thumbs up though :-)
Actually according to BMW the increase in ride height is to keep the angle of the front drive shafts within "safe" tolerances and nothing to do with them wanting to give x-drive cars extra ground clearance.
Yeah you're right about the 330d being smoother and better sounding, let alone rapid. I didn't go for x-drive as I wanted the playfulness, seems I was wrong about the x-drive being like a haldex Quattro system.
My 320 D X Drive with pro nav, HUD and reversing camera is the second best car I’ve ever owned and is averaging 48.5 MPG (measured using the Road Trip LE app) over the last 14 months. I had a 335 M Sport (with even more toys) for 3 months until 4 scum bags broke into my house, stole the key and made off with it. The 335 was the best car I’d ever owned ... Great review and 100% agree with your verdict.
Great video, as always! Glad I found your channel. Currently got the 120d xdrive which gives great mpg and a little bit of fun whenever you want it! M140i on the cards next year though 🙄
I drive a 330d in London daily, occasional motorway runs at the weekend and when possible I don't hang around. It's never in eco, 80% comfort 20% sport+ and I average 38.6mpg I'm surprised you're only getting 41.6mpg.
Amazing, yeah the xDrive system uses 10-15% more energy than a RWD setup, also (as I said in the video), I don't think there is any difference MPG wise between the 320d and 330d.
Harry C I can see that being the case if you're pushing the car hard but he said he was using eco pro a lot. I just think for the extra 3 mpg the difference in refinement and fun isn't worth it, I only wish there was a non Xdrive 335d.
My brother has a E90LCI 320XD and i agree on every word you said. The car really is rear biased and fun when you want to play. Important to understand is that you can toss it around only on dirt road or wet surface otherwise it's super planted and safe. What surprised me the most is that understeer is non existent. With a mild tuneup you get buckets of torque and have overtaking power pretty much non-stop, but it does die up top. Economy is super good and super reliable, pretty cheap to insure and tax also. In other words a very good package overall. It's good on everything but not great on anything is my final conclusion.
Hi Joe, the 320D Xdrive for £30k from Berry BMW is great value for money and looks like a great car as you say it would be a hard car to fault under any circumstance well Joe as ever a great video and Best Wishes Alan B.
I've basically got the exact car Chris Harris reviews in Estotril Blue only with the 8 speed auto. I've come from a 190bhp Lotus Elise since having a little boy, so bit of a change, but my first BMW leaves me feeling like I won't want another marque now. The only downside is they're bloody everywhere.
Mazda's 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, as used on the previous Mazda 3, is not noisy or rough at all. Maybe that's because it produces only 150bhp compared with the 320d's 190bhp, but somehow Mazda seem to have produced a sophisticated sounding engine where BMW have not.
2018 320 d...just tried it... flies like a light bird... funniest car to drive... has equilibrium...so harmonic... so musical... just enough power...perfect weight.. has the birds secure fly... i could choose any...getting that one soon...red...safest color at daylight... family car...awesome..unbeatable...or is it?
Just got this on my feed. 120d xdrive with winters on because I live in germany. Its great. Rear biased. Push it all the time and its brilliant. Enough for a bit of fun and fast. Corners are brilliant. Infact I go looking for them. Next one 330d. Would I get another x drive....yes but what one
330i would be a better comparison. Close to the diesels torque figure. The B48 is a cracking engine.Just sold a JCW and it had all the grunt you'd ever need.
About the thing you said about the car using practically no fuel in neutral, doesn't the car use the most fuel when in neutral bcs the engine is idling in that situation, no matter if it is coasting or stationery?
I need a diesel car with the fuel prices going up so I'm deciding between 2017 320d M or 420d M, same mileage, same price, same trim... I really don't know :(
Please do a 320i version! I’m currently torn between this and the Petrol version. Obviously torque is down and a bit and mpg but I suspect the drive to be different
Ben Schofield yes! I would definitely be interested in seeing that, seeing more and more 320i’s on the road the last few months. Seems more and more people are moving to petrol for a compact saloon such as the C class’s, a4/a5’s and 3/4 series’s. Which as company and family cars have been typically diesel. And seeing more and more TFSI and ‘i’ badges on the road pleases me a lot!
320i: way better engine note (more like a BMW), way more tuneable (get can pretty much tune it to be a 330i), you don’t get the annoying diesel rattle/all the negative diesel longevity issues, cheaper than the 320d. The only downside is the mpg but it’s still bloody efficient for what it is. My mate gets around 40mpg on his 320i which is his daily that he’s owned for 8 months. Unless it’s a company car that you need long journeys for, I’d stick to the petrol.
Havent driven a 320i but i drove a 420i Coupe followed by a X4 20D over the same road the petrol was a bit of a disappointment. Earlier that week I drove a 320D SE, fabulous car only lacking the panel shifts which I love.
Thanks man! Thats VERY kind of you man, I have been offered a nice 640D from a friend recently too, I just need to find the time haha. Lovely cars the 640d's :-) Cheers
Have to agree joe I sold my m140i as needed bigger car I wanted 330d tourer but I was struggling to find low mileage about 2015 model otherwise huge jump in price for 335d I really live the car I find it gives a flat boring impression at times but then I notice the Speedo and thinking jeez I need to ease off... all round great car and like you say HK a defo cool upgrade and you loose the boring 4 pot sound
i'm on 38mpg in my LCI, engine braking does seem non existent, feels strange when i've come from a E46 M3 SMG which was good down shifting. I coded out start stop so it remembers the last setting as it is awful when coming to a stop for a second or so.
London Borough of Ealing (not too far from you Joe I guess) any diesel owner including euro 6 will have to pay around 50% more for their Car parking permit....................diesel hate is a killer...........by the way my F30 30d is better mpg than my old one series 2 ltr derv.......... my journey up to Leicester from West London 2 days ago 60mpg on my OBC which is crazy re options that looks dark in that cockpit thats why I love sunroofs
Yeah I'm getting the 50% bullshit on my 7 series in certain boroughs of London now too :-( Yeah I can imagine the 30d is slightly more efficient than the 18/20d in many circumstances, glad to hear thats true! Cheers
Hi Joe, been rewatching the 3 series videos. I’m struggling to work out whether the 3.0d justifies the cost over the 2.0d. I know it’s a lot smoother and powerful but I think the 190 bhp 2.0 would do me. How is the ride around the city..? Thank you Paul
In neutral you are using fuel. If engine braking you use none. If you need to brake because you are catching the car in front then you would have done better in gear so the injectors are turned off.
Great vid Joe! 320D actually a good all-rounder, but now let's be serious.......I'm sure the female subscribers will be pleased to see your chopper at the start of this vid😱😂
I have f20 116d tuned to 185hp. Really nice and comfy car for 1series. My average is 5.0-5.2l/100km. I also play that eco game when I drive to work, but ruin everything on weekends :D
why do they call it an m sport it is not , this is as bad as idiots putting m badges on there cars thinking they are m cars.people who know about m cars laugh when they see them, and people who dont know about m cars could not care less so why do it
m sport is just a specification including suspension, alloys, interior and exterior body kit. This car has most of the msport spec, excluding the suspension which is changed for the x drive. so why would BMW not call it an m sport? you do realise that the M models e.g M4 are not the same spec as the m sport right?
yes i own an m5 and it says it on the log book , why try to be something you are not m sport diesel you havin a laugh, its like having a fiat 500 that is red and calling it a fiat ferrari
its similar in concept to the audi S line. Take a boring SE model, then put M sport spec on for body kit, sports seats, upgraded wheels and m tech suspension. Dont see much wrong with that , providing you dont put an M badge next to the model . Not much wrong with an M sport diesel either. A x35d get get to 60 in 4.7 seconds.
I'm one of the diesel haters. I don't understand how anyone can think they are a petrol head yet drive a diesel car! But i do understand fully that some people can't afford to drive a petrol car.
If you've spent time in a 30/35d/40d or ALPINA D3 and still say that then fair enough, if you're saying that without trying any of above then I dare you to actually try one. The 30d is one of the most incredible power plants on this planet, it's not for sports cars and doesn't make a petrol straight 6 sound, but everywhere else it's genuinely incredible, in larger models the 30d is far better than a 40i equivalent

Another good one Joe!
Cheers Bruce!
Great content and editing work!
Thanks buddy, hope you're well, love watching your Ferrari world ;-)
Hi Joe, a theoretical question: A new 530d xDrive or a lightly used 740d xDrive for the UK? If it was your money... Cheers
I still think the F30 is the best looking 3 series.
Bad intro music, but very good review
Legend 🤣
Love this car
Have to agree joe I sold my m140i as needed bigger car I wanted 330d tourer but I was struggling to find low mileage about 2015 model otherwise huge jump in price for 335d I really live the car I find it gives a flat boring impression at times but then I notice the Speedo and thinking jeez I need to ease off... all round great car and like you say HK a defo cool upgrade and you loose the boring 4 pot sound
Cheers Mark glad you agree man :-)
Joe Achilles have you done a 330e or do you plan to do one.... I'm interested in one next cheers pal
Hi Joe would you recommend this car for a cab driver ? 90 % city driving rest are highways and first class roads outside city.
Not x drive model because as the miles go up you’ll have problems with it
Joe how are you feeling about your 135 now? You looked like you'd lost the will to live on IG yesterday.
It's in the garage and i'm ignoring it for a while, cant face the reality :-(
i'm on 38mpg in my LCI, engine braking does seem non existent, feels strange when i've come from a E46 M3 SMG which was good down shifting. I coded out start stop so it remembers the last setting as it is awful when coming to a stop for a second or so.
Ohh nice, so fairly similar MPG to me, yeah stop/start is annoying in all cars!
Guess he couldn’t be arsed replying to you bud. Go for the bigger one
@@Mark_B544 he replied to a 2 year video so really couldn’t expect less.
In neutral you are using fuel. If engine braking you use none. If you need to brake because you are catching the car in front then you would have done better in gear so the injectors are turned off.
Awesome video. How can the dealer knock off 10k?
Cheers man, Tony always gives incredible deals!
Diesel not for me but great vid again Joe 😎👍
Cheers Gary, I totally get that diesels are marmites, thanks for watching though!
Hi Joe, first time watcher on your channel. How would you rate this car as a second hand 2 year old buy?
Hey mate, I know this comment is old but I’m looking to pick one up now, did you ever buy one? If so what’s your opinion?
@@Tom-hy9kf no, went for the Audi Avant A4 quattro instead. After a year, It is perfect.
@@Back2TheBike thank you for taking the time to reply. What was it that sold you on that model in particular?
@@Tom-hy9kf virtually identical but A4 has superior cockpit and displays IMHO
@@Back2TheBike thank you for your help, it’s much appreciated
Good vid, car would probably be better with mpss 😱
Great video, Joe - informative and honest as ever
I am only missing the hardon condom sound system in my 2014 M sport a high spec otherwise...........
2 weeks til i get mine!!! yeah!
Funny to hear people talk about monthly payments so often. I guess cars are now effectively a subscription service.
Hi I just got this 329i xdrive m car is anyone know how many usb or other 12 V power output available in this car ?
Does this deal still exist Joe? It’s been took off the TRL baby bmw thread.
Apparently not now, doh! Tony will do you a deal on whatever you like though, just email him quoting this video and he will sort you out. Cheers
Beautiful video. Nice 👌
Going to buy that off Tony mate. Then complain that you have made a video and make you remove it. 🤣😂
Good vid as always.
Haha - I almost put a disclaimer on here about that ;-)
Are these the double spoke 442 M bicolor orbit gray rims ?
Beautiful helicopter
What's the tune playing at the start of the Video Joe?
Nice Videos
Keep it up!!!
Cheers will do!
Great vid Joe! 320D actually a good all-rounder, but now let's be serious.......I'm sure the female subscribers will be pleased to see your chopper at the start of this vid😱😂
Haha, don't tell everyone! All my UA-cam revenue bought me that chopper ;-)
It’s no alpina d3 touring;) but it’s still a great car! Great video joe as per
Haha Yeah this is true!
Hi. Can someone tell me if the xdrive shadow edition on the 320d comes with the BMW heads up unit? Thanks.
Do you even lift bro?
The ultimate good father's car! Dousnt feel naughty in normal mode, becomes a audi killer in sport mode (and with your foot down obviously)
Who does the guy in your logo represent?
Haha god knows, I need someone to design one with my face on it
BMW 😍😍😍
I have f20 116d tuned to 185hp. Really nice and comfy car for 1series. My average is 5.0-5.2l/100km. I also play that eco game when I drive to work, but ruin everything on weekends :D
Hey mate! love watching your videos. Give us a shout out if you're ever in Perth, Western Australia :)
why do they call it an m sport it is not , this is as bad as idiots putting m badges on there cars thinking they are m cars.people who know about m cars laugh when they see them, and people who dont know about m cars could not care less so why do it
m sport is just a specification including suspension, alloys, interior and exterior body kit.
A x35d get get to 60 in 4.7 seconds.
its about herratage not speed
