  • So, this is the transmission of the Yamaha Majesty 400.
As you can see, the rear wheel have a small tendency to spin even if the clutch is not engaged. This is perfectly normal. It is caused by the small friction in the bearings located in the rear pulley/clutch assembly.

Few people know this: You can remove the metal cover without having to undo the drive sheaves! Just remove cover bolts (nine small, one big, if I remember correctly) and then gently pry off the cover with a large flat screwdriver (there is a few "notches" designed for prying the cover on the bottom side. Look carefully.)
If you never took off the cover this way, it may be hard or even impossible to pry it off.
Refer to the service manual for more details. If you don't have one, just ask me!

Boy I surely do NOT recommend anyone put their fingers near all those spinning parts. There were times when you were spinning that thing that your fingers were less than 2 inches from contacting those vanes. People, do NOT do this. This is very dangerous.

It looks much more dangerous than it really is, it is a question of viewpoint, camera was on the side, but I was seeing things from the top, and the clutch bell is protruding a lot sideways, so my fingers never came too close to the belt. Also, as a machinist, I am used to put my fingers very close to moving parts... What I just did was not dangerous because I was fully aware of the dangerous spots and because I have very steady hands.

Nice to see a new video. You have some good scooters, I just have a cheap chinese made scooter I bought at a low price 3 years ago and have been restoring it to sell.

If you enjoy riding your small scooter, then expect many times more fun on a bigger one. It's worth the additional expense, in my opinion.
I got my C3 strictly for practical reasons: cheap and efficient transportation, but I enjoyed it so much that I got the Majesty two years after.

Agreed. I went from a 2009 Vino 125 (GREAT little Scoot) to a 2005 Majesty 400 in order to get over the mountain passes where I live, and I will never regret the switch.

    Hi Zaran1,
I am riding a 2011 majesty, and the vbelt cover is slightly different than the earlier models. In the 2011 version, the cover doesn't provide access to the 2 "holes" on the variator that you can use to "lock" it in place while removing the nut.
As such, I need to remove the cover first, before I have access to these "holes".
Could you share more information about how you pry off the cover?
I tried "prying" it off, but I stopped fearing I might damage something. From the service manual, it appears the vbelt cover actually has a 2 bearings (clutch + primary sheave) which has some "o-rings" which ensure a snug fit onto the shaft. Is my understanding correct? So basically I just pry open from different sides, and cover should come off these "o rings"?
Did you need to replace the O-rings? The service manual says to use "NEW" ones each time...
    Thanks!

J Pow I have the Majesty 400, North American model. Here is the diagram for the transmission covers of the 2014 Majesty 400, www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/2014-yamaha-majesty-yp400er/o/m155546#sch864042 it's exactly the same as my 2007. There is no diagram available for the 2011. It helps to remove the left air filter cover. It also helps to remove the long plastic trim under the left footrest. Then you need to remove the PLASTIC transmission cover by removing a few #3 phillips screws (do not use a #2 screwdriver, or you will damage those screws). under the plastic cover, there is the METAL transmission cover, there are openings in this metal cover where you can see the variator and the two holes for locking the variator. The metal cover is held by a lot of bolts, nine small bolts around (if i remember correctly) and one larger bolt in the middle. Make sure that all the bolts are removed before trying to pry off the cover. Prying it off might be quite complicated if the grease between the spacers (#6 and #9 in the diagram) and the bearings(#2 and #3) got dried and stiff. The first time i took it apart, I had to remove the variator and clutch nut before I could remove the metal cover. Once the cover was removed, it was easy to push the spacers out of the bearings. I cleaned and re-greased carefully the spacers before I reinstalled them, and the o-rings were not damaged at all, so I reused them. The next time I had to check the inside of the transmission, I was able to slide the cover off quite easily without having to undo the variator and clutch nuts, because the grease was still fresh.

zaran1 I wrote all that above, then I found this video which would give you a good idea about how things work. ua-cam.com/video/UjjcQcYxYiI/v-deo.html But that guy is a butchering that transmission, I woudn't ride on that scooter: First, he let the v-belt touch that greasy crankshaft, then, he accidentally put grease on the variator face where the belt rides, and it seems he forgot to clean it... Belt must never touch grease! Also, he used an impact driver to tighten the variator and clutch nuts... You must use a dynamometric wrench there, and respect the torque as in the service manual!

Dear Zaran, thanks so much for replying!
For my 2011 Majesty, the metal cover is slightly different. The 2 holes on the variator (for the locking tool) are hidden from view, so I can't jam something in there to "hold" the variator in place. This is why I am trying to remove the cover first, to get access to the holes.
However, like you said, maybe the spacer grease has "dried" up which is why it is so difficult. I guess I will try to find a way to open it.
BTW: Is the grease type important? I bought a tub of "multi purpose grease". I am not sure if I will screw things up by using it?
      Thanks again!

I always used lithium based grease there, and never had any problems.
Is it a Majesty 400 for North America? I find it surprising that it's different from mine, I've never heard about modifications on the power train over the years. Are you the first owner? Maybe someone put a different variator, maybe that's why you can't see the holes. Anyways, do not use the fins of the variator to keep it from turning, those are fragile and they will break easily. The variator nut is very tight, therefore you must find another way. Maybe an impact wrench could remove that nut, but probably all it will do is spin the crankshaft without loosening the nut. It's ok to use an impact wrench to loosen nuts and bolts, but I would never use it to tighten things up. First you must make sure you removed all the bolts holding the cover, there' ten of them I think, nine small, one bigger. To remove the metal cover without removing the variator and clutch nuts, you must be very cautious. You can't slide off the rear bearing, then the front. The cover must be pulled out evenly and gradually. You move the rear bearing out a tiny distance, then you move the front bearing out a tiny distance, then the rear, etc... until the cover comes off. Tiny distance here often means less than 1 mm. You should try to wiggle the cover in every direction to help the process. You must be very patient and gentle there, that cover is made of thin aluminum, and can easily bend or break if too much force is used .There are notches underneath where you can use a large screwdriver for leverage, but be careful not to scratch the contact area of the cover with the screwdriver. If the bearings and spacers are completely stuck together, then I am not quite sure what you should do... If you can wait a few days, I will make a video to demonstrate other ways hard to explain in writing. The transmission of my Majesty is due for an inspection anyways.

Thanks Zaran! I ended up buying an electric impact wrench, and it popped off both nuts in just a few seconds! I didnt even need to lock the variator or anything.....
I installed my new belt and Dr Pulley sliders, and all is good!!
Today, I also watched a mechanic pop off the the CVT cover by putting a screw driver between the variator and the cover...
Bike is running great, and I just have one more noise to fix. The exhaust heat shield is "buzzing" at certain RPM. I realised one of the plastic tabs (that slot into a rubber grommet) broke off... I have to think of a way to fix this, because tightening the heat shield nuts doesn't really work.

Hello Zaran, ik have a question about the j costa vario. do you have troubles with damaging your crankshaft on the end? because the j costa doesnt have splines on the bell. and the oem vario does. greetz Roy

Did you just put the nuts back on to allow you to run it without the cover? I am in the process of inspecting mine after working on the CVT. Still got some vibration and I was wondering about sanding the inside of the clutch bell?
