First off, you only tested the *axe* form, not the sword form; at least, you didn't test the sword form the same way you did the axe form.
Second, there's a much *simpler* way to do a switch-axe, & that's simply have a swords cross guard taper to a razor sharp edge so that they *function* like axe heads when you flip it over & grab it by the blade to do a mordhau; *that* way, not only is it still as simple in construction as it can possibly be, reducing the chance of failure to the same as a *normal* sword, but when you're using it as a sword, the axe heads are *still* in use because they function as the cross guard. Maybe it's not as *flashy* as a transforming mechanical weapon, but it's still *Functionally* the same while being a lot more *reliable* .

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  4 місяці тому +2

@@ezrafaulk3076 first off, the weapon is a lot sturdier in sword mode, so why would I test that one as well, if it holds up in the more vulnerable axe state. The switch axe allows to switch between modes, so why would I test puncturing in sword mode, if axe mode is more suited to the task.
And secondly, just like I explained in the first video and in every trick weapon video before that: I’m not trying to make the most practical version of video game weapons. I’m trying to take a fantasy weapon and make it work without losing too much of the original flair. I know there are simpler versions, I’ve also seen Skallagrims video about it

perhaps incorporating some kind of simple spring lock to hold the handguard in place so that the sword mode would be more stable, and a simple squeeze of the upper hand to release the spring to change to axe mode. What I mean is just a little hook on the backside of the handle going through the handguard

a tip: swing the weapon as if you're throwing it. as if you're going to throw it like a skipping stone... but don't let it go, even with the little whip motion. "throw" it through the target, with the leading and trailing edges in alignment on the plane of motion, to get a clean, deep cut.
to better achieve this, try a pinch-grip. Pinch the grip at the base between your thumb and the first knuckle of your index finger: like you would to hold out a dollar bill (Euro Note?) to someone, so that your thumb is on top, and the weapon is sideways, with the cutting edge facing inward (if you're holding it with your right hand, the edge will be on the left side). Sometimes called a Chef's Grip, it's also how one wields a German Zweihänder (held overhead, but the edges are on the sides, rather than top and bottom like a longsword). You can practice this by holding a piece of paper and swishing it through the air: trying to get it to not drag the air, but it's not hard; if you can skip a stone, you can learn this in 5 minutes.
The BEST part of this tech is that it's actually _easier_ on the blade, while also doing *significantly* more damage to the target! [EDIT: It ALSO means that the blade should still bite deeply, even if it folds on impact! imagine the sword is actually a blade on the end of a chain or rope, high speed means higher penetration!]
with long blades, torque is largely most useful for defeating an opponent's guard by physically moving it out of the way, meaning you need a lot of work, over a lot of time. but for cutting, blade-speed is far more important. this is because the total amount of energy imparted is less important that the rate at which it's imparted (the impulse).
I like to think of it like PSI. if you have 1kg of steel in a cube with round corners, it's not going to cut deep into a wooden plank. But if you have a half, or quarter kg steel spike or sharp blade, it will sink MUCH deeper with the same force applied, because that 1kg x Velocity is being applied not to a face however many cm in area, but to an edge or point totaling just fractions of a mm in area: thus achieving a MASSIVELY higher level of PSI.
So, "throwing" and "whipping" the blade into the target, so it's moving *fast* rather than *hard*, without bothering with putting your body-weight into it beyond using it to accelerate the blade, imparts the same force (or less) but in a TINY fraction of the time.
@QuintBUILDs did a knife-throwing machine in a few vids, and I think he touched on this concept as well, discussing why using all his might, he couldn't sink a knife into a board as deeply as he could when he casually threw it. this is also why tiny, super-sonic bullets can penetrate armor better than big, slow bullets, even if their total energy at impact is the same.
Remember, in ballistics, if you have to choose between high Newtons, or High Impulse, and you want penetration; Choose High Impulse!

  • @eddieford9373

I think the highest functionality you could get would be the advantages of an axe (heavy end giving more power and the armor piercing spike), but the easy carry of a sword. The function of switching isn't that useful in the middle of a fight.

as a concept build/ v1 build it looked and worked incredibly, the biggest two flaws I noticed were the locking mechanism could use an upgrade so it stays in sword/ axe mode better. and the bottom of the handle seemed to have a lot of flex going on when you swung it like a wood axe

Funny enough, casually embedding the ax into the larger log used as a base for log splitting is probably more impressive than the pieces of firewood being cut.
The firewood was very clearly dry and brittle (you could even hear the higher pitched "cracking" noise rather than a deeper "chop")
Would love to see an in-depth test on either fresher logs, or some nice solid timber, and even a test trying to cut perpendicular to the wood grain instead of with it.

This is really cool. It reminds me of a transforming weapon from Bloodborne if a samurai had designed it.
I was watching you demonstrate how a tip-hit could force it to initiate the early stages of axe mode, and I'm not an engineer, and you'd know better than I would, how your weapon works, but I was wondering if "V2" someday might be able to prevent this kind of issue using a simple detent-like mechanism. Just a peg that goes through a hole, or a ball that sticks out into a recession, to lock it into sword mode. With a detent, the press of a button or switch can retract the peg to allow movement when desired, and help prevent it when its undesired.
    But I know nothing, really.

You could take the design of a plain longsword, use an axe head as a crossguard, cut out the area where the fuller is, and at the end of the fuller near the point there could be a latch that could catch the axe head in place. A trigger of some sort could be used to engage and disengage the latches that hold the axe head in place.

well i do think theyre right. it does have too many moving parts to be reliable. when you need it in combat you need it to be there 100% of the time, not 99.9% of the time. if that .1% occurs you wont use it again. it has too many moving parts, each part is potential point of failure. Usually multi purpose tools dont exel at both. Swords have needs which axes cant have and axes have needs which swords cant have.

tho the thing with axes is that they concentrate all the power in a small area. On your axe that would be the hinge joint, is that area really durable or sharp enough to punch thru? Sure it can be as dull as a hammer and still be effective, because.... war hammers exist, but then its not an axe. So maybe an additional hinge cover which can be sharpened? But then again, more parts means more points of potential failure.

Surprisingly solid design, have to say. I think the solution to the sword mode slightly shifting a bit would be if you had a finger over the crossguard as well, like some swords do. I would personally have left a small portion of the blade blunt, or a small groove (I hope that's the right word) for the finger itself, rather than it being all sharpened edge. Minimises potential cuts to yourself, and your finger, theoretically, should prevent the blade from trying to shift modes, as you're physically holding down the crossguard, which seems to be fixed in place, whilst everything else moves.
...Only downside to this though is probably if it still manages to try and shift modes for some reason, your finger is probably getting caught, and if you opted to go for the finger groove.. Let's just say, your finger is not going to have a god time.
For trick weapons though, this is one of the better ones, have to say. You damn well should be proud of this. If it doesn't bother you too much, I might try proposing it for tabletop RPG sessions, especially if I'm playing a dwarf. Feels like it would be pretty fitting for fantasy.

The biggest issue with turning back to sword mode (except small things getting lodged in the maechanism) is that you don't seem to have a lot of handle to caught for it. But it look great and as balanced as it can be. To improve it, maybe putting a second edge on the top to use it more effectively for piercing.

Going into the video, I would have expected stress tests to maybe cause it to take a set that would lock it in one mode, but not break apart in any of the weld joints because I've seen enough of your videos to know that you're pretty good at making durable welds. I did notice that there's quite a bit of flex at the join between the handle and the blade when it's in axe mode and the struts are up around the blade body, and I can imagine that eventually blowing apart. Maybe lengthening the struts a bit to provide rigidity when the weapon is in axe mode? I dunno, I'm not sure if that would work or just add to the stress.

i think it would be most useful to create some way to lock it into *sword* mode. it seems to have a tendency to go back to axe mode usually.

    OH MY GOD IDEA
So you see how the main handle has those gaps which the mechanism slides into when you move to axe mode? A fantastic way to be able to keep it from sliding back would be to make that bottom handle be able to be squeezed together temporarily, locking axe-mode in. It could just be enforced by hand pressure and have a spring that keeps it apart when unsqueezed. I think that would increase the sturdiness of this build overall.

I talked briefly with a guy that I learned blacksmithing with, and I can confidently say a Switch Axe, particularly the bulky anime-like one from Monster Hunter, the big axe and sword weapon, is physically possible… it just has some inherent problems.
One, it would be hefty as hell; the weapon is already one of the heaviest single weapons in Monster Hunter, being a weapon that has a shift dodge at first, similar to the Lance weapons. The weapons heavier than it would be the Great Sword, the Charge Blade, and both Lances, and the Heavy Bowgun, and those usually either have low mobility, big shields, or just hit hard in the Great Sword's case, it is a slow weapon. Keep in mind Monster Hunter character consume effectively family size meals by themselves every hour, sometimes less than that, and yet don't get insanely fat but also swing these weapons around like they're nothing, so we're in a bit of a different league from them. And that's before we get into the next problem
Two, structural stability. The part of the chat with the guy that led me to believe it is physically possibly was actually talking about the crucial part that makes the Switch Axe, well, the Switch Axe; the switching. A solid, hefty metal chain in the main structure of the weapon, with the axehead and sword blade attached to it, would allow basically laws of physics and energy transfer to allow a pulley system and gravity to move the axehead and sword around on the chain, allowing the weapon to, in real life, do at least some of the moves from in game that have the Switch Axe switch modes. The problem is this would structurally compromise the weapon if methods to address this are not properly done. This can result in even more weight from solid heavy parts to keep the part structurally sound, which might mean needing a motor to assist in the swinging of the parts, equalling more weight. The chain might need to be purposely built for the weapon, equaling potentially more weight. Really strong magnets could be a good alternative if handled right and positioned correctly, but that might lead to hefty price increases.
Three, viability/practicality. This is the killer; no matter what, this would be a very impractical weapon. Not useful in modern day applications really at all, not useful in medieval combat, and funnily enough, by IRL standards, not useful for Monster Hunting. There's no way to fully eliminate the structural problems that comes from a pulley system actuated weapon, especially if being used to fight big monsters like the many types of wyverns. An actual swordsman on youtube did say the Great Sword can work for hunting monsters, given how much blade size the top of the blade had which'd aid in getting through the thick hide of a monster, which is a very practical way of saying it is reasonable by irl standards, but the Switch Axe, in the ways we could design it with modern realistic mechanics and blacksmithing would not be able to do it.
However, it would make for one sick as hell woodcutting axe. Should the axehead be structurally stabilised so as not to wiggle around, and you have enough muscles to lift it (which you'd need to be one swole and bulky guy just in regards to weight), it would actually work exactly as it does in game, even if just for show. That was the part of the chat with the guy led me to conclude on if it was possible. Before that day, I thought it could be done, but the switching part would need to be done by hand, just like how a bunch of RWBY weapon cosplays do the weapon switching. But with a simple pulley system with a hefty chain to bear the weight, gravity and momentum, transfer of energy, a decent understanding of Newton's Laws of Physics, and a big amount of muscles, the crazy weapon switching as shown in the games is physically possible.
And that is probably the best thing about the "Switch Axe" from Monster Hunter; the fact the weapon is even somewhat possible, if only just for show, was far more capable of being realistically done in real life, was incredible to me. Sure it'd take a bloody fortune of money to make even reasonably structurally sound, and the weight would be very great, especially if making it to size, but the weapon would be possible. Honestly, that's probably more insane than both the idea of thinking of making such a weapon and also the concept that it wouldn't be possible to make it one to one accurate to in game.

So an interesting weapon to make would be the Chaos Blade Judge Gabranth of FF12 uses. Its a Large sword he uses in his Right hand and a short spear in his left, they can be connected together to be used like a double headed spear. Both weapons have a fairly long handle so when its connected it has a good haft that allows him to use it.
He also fairly freely switched between either mode.

I feel like most of the time people really underestimate how durable stuff like this can be just because it'd be less durable than more simple weapons. Yes, it wouldn't hold up to as much repeated practical use as a regular sword or axe, but that doesn't mean it's going to fall apart at the slightest impact.
