    The second installment of working on the Whip Sword. This time I'm tackling the rigidity problem and try to get the sword mode to work. This will be the last video I'm making on this specific sword as I'm not a huge fan of working on a prototype. I'll much rather make a new, improved version in the future!
    I hope you still enjoyed this one!

      Maybe you can somehow make it so it can only bend backward a certain angle. So as you start to swing, the bottom segments leave it behind and the top ones whip after them like a spring to reconnect the segments. then they lock together after the swing automatically.
      Maybe after every trigger pool it unlocks the segments. So as soon as you swing back you activate the trigger to let the force of the backswing disconnect them. Then you swing it toward the target and let go of the unlock trigger to make it so it contracts together during the swing to actually make it whip.
      There has to be a whipping motion for it to be a whip right? It's more like a sword-flail at the moment.

    (finally not a joke comment) you can further increase rigidity by doing male and female joints in the segments of blade, itself. So, when they retract, they lock together mechanically. It won't make it as rigid as a solid steel piece, but it will increase the rigidity, noticeably.

      Yeah I think this is sort of more on the right track, you'll need to increase the profile of the blade bevels to something more obtuse- basically an axe profile to fit it all in, but it will give you room to run the cables internally as well.
      My inclination is to make it 'less sword' and more individual, jagged saw sections that occasionally play together in a semi-rigid lump of distilled fantasy autism
      But I'm a full time kitchen knife maker so I basically know jack shit about fantasy weapons and take that for what its worth :)

      @@noneyabidness9644 My thinking as well is that if the sections are smaller then it will give a lot more flexibility for each part to have more angle being possible on its horizontal axis. Whereas with the larger sections in this 'Mk1' version they're more limited in how much they can bend in relation to each other- much like in a drive chain you have all the little bits giving it that flex.

    I see two major problems with the design:
    1. Don't use flat blade segments. Use V or W blade segments so lock into each other and makes it harder to move around. Look at Ivy's whip sword and you can see they don't use flat segments, more like an arrow shape. Given how the force should work, you might want a longer and harder non-sharpened side that stacks on top of each other as reinforcement.
    2. Hide the wires inside the sword instead of outside.
    But I do have to give props for using tape measure as idea for the retraction mechanism. That's a genius idea.

      @@NjordArtisan I'm super late to make any reccomendations, but using only one cord might also be a problem once you incorporate interlocking segments. The segments might shift too much even when locked, especially if you use V segments. W segments may not have this problem as much.
      Also, the flexing bothers me. The segments have rather strong cutting power from the whip forces, but since the blade can't reliably align it's prone to just shatter the edge against anything that with significant hardness.
      Still really cool though!
      P.s. for extra cutting power maybe try to work more of a *slight* curve into the 2 segments below the tip?

    Years ago, I saw an ad for a flexible sword that stored inside a leather belt. It had blade sections that had two holes drilled axially for a cable to go up and then back down through (ie, a single internal cable that went up the holes on the back side of each section, turned around at the point and came down the set of holes near the front, so the cable was not externally exposed) and the top and bottom of each blade section was machined in matching V shapes so that the sections interlocked and self aligned when tensioned vs just being butted against each other. The handle was just like a small brake lever to tension the sections together. It had no spring as all it was intended to do was loosen and be flexible enough to wrap around your waist inside the belt and did not have to separate like the fantasy chain sword, so just a tension lever was enough to get it to lock into a straight and rigid sword.
    Anyone remember seeing this? I can't find any references using Google, but it was well over 15 years ago...

      @Jim Bo Nope, not it.. The Apex is just a really flexible one-piece blade. The sword I remember was literally a 1/4" thick shortsword blade essentially cut into about 1" long sections and threaded back together with a cable in the manner I described above, that when tensioned by the handle, would hold the sections together in a rigid blade again. Very similar to what Njord built...

    Those working noises are something else.
    Also, in the previous video I gave the suggestion of putting pins on each link that fit in to the next one, this would add rigidity and you would have to worry only about the shear force applied to the pins. Another solution would be to have plates with perpendicular pins one on each end, that fit in to the spine of the blade, securing each two links together.
    I know you'll figure this out, keep it up bro ♥️

    Some improvements that come to mind. Though they would be far more difficult and would have their cons.
    1. Move the wire system inside the blade itself. You could use the same guide principle you have now.
    Pro: This would allow the blade edge to have a smoother transition so you could cut deeper.
    Con: You would need space on the inside of the blade. This also might make blade alignment more difficult as the retention would be closer to the center axis.
    2. Add another wire retaction system to the spine of the blade.
    Pro: This would improve the rigidity of the blade by adding a 3rd clamping force and spreading it out along the body of the sword more.
    Con: Due to it being on only the back side of the blade this may produce uneven force and lead to the blade curling. (Could be offset by having the other two wires close to the edge of blade)
    3. Tab and slot system
    Pro: Would allow the blade to be more rigid while retacted.
    Con: Getting it to align with the retraction system would be difficult.
    4. Polishing the gear and guide system (wood and brass)
    Pro: Would provide a smoother action and allow force to be more constantly applied due to lack of binding
    Con: Time consuming.

Each blade segment has a diamond shaped opening which provides a V shaped cutting edge while also providing space to attach the wire inside the segments instead of outside. Also each segment has >> points for when it retracts to keep shape. Props to kubo for putting that much thought into a weapon design.

    • @TheOldSchoolCrisis
      @TheOldSchoolCrisis Рік тому +3

      Unfortunately if this was the case you would just use a whip. The idea of a whip sword is it is both a whip for creating pain and a sword for clean efficient cuts. I think there is a good reason weapons like these only appear in fantasy as creating something that is functional at both becomes quite complicated and doesn't ever work nearly as well as just having two dedicated tools. That said it is 2023, I am sure there is a way to make it all work given the machining we have available to us these days.

    In addition to some other comment suggestions, one way to possibly help the rigidity and usability is to modify the trigger in a couple of ways:
    1) add more secure points between the lever and the gear and/or a higher gear ratio between the spring gear and the lever. Either of these would serve as added torque to the locking mechanism and will take more energy to overcome.
    2) decrease possible user error for securing the blade. Ie, make the trigger mechanism control the *release* of the cable, rather than adding tension to the cable. This would allow you to apply theoretically any amount of locking force to the spring and release all of it with a lever, rather than relying on the force of your hand and a single lever to keep the gear locked against all the force of swinging the blade. If you really only on the grip force, you lose the advantage of automation (humans biomechanically have more control over force applied when static as compared to when in motion). Also several versions down the line, it could allow for a variable extension length, depending on how long the trigger is released while swinging.

    I think you would be better off with a lever instead of a spring. And having the default mold be the whip. Then when you pull the Lever trigger It would pull the segments into a sword.
    The main reason for this is it would make it more functional as a weapon. Start with a Chain Whip as a fully functional weapon. They can be stiffened into a rod But still flexible then add your blade. You might even be able to get rid of steel cable unreplace it with a second whip That locks up when the Two chains a pulled out of sync and the hinges don't Lineup.

    If you're willing to deviate from the classic whip sword design a bit, you could make the first 3rd or so of the blade solid, giving yourself a more rigid part of the blade that can be used to block or parry, and also making the sword safer to use, as the floppy part will start farther away from your body, much like a medieval flail. And it would also give you a longer lever for swinging the whip, making it hit harder.

    I would suggest "nesting" the blade/segments so on impact they become more held together. The main benefits and targets for the "whip sword" are that it can fold over a guard, it does not need to be as easy to bend in the opposite direction.
    You don't fight with it like a actual whip where it needs that S motion to send the force along a wave. It's more like the benefits of a flail you are wanting it to hinge around the block so a "C"(or "r") motion is what you want the edge area to be able to bend and wrap but the back area to want to lock and resist bending in its direction.
    If this was mace/flail combo it would be "easy" (not really) to have the chain pull it tight on to a ridged pin to stop most flex.
    So don't know if comments can translate this but
    Edge =>
    \
    \
    \\
    \\
    \
    \
    Layering the ridged blade like this means when you hit lower on the blade the higher part can hinged and wrap around to get the cut.
    But hitting higher on the blade the segments lock together delivering the force continually down to the handle. This means the force on the wire is only real their to keep the tension and segments in place.
    As a "solid" blade where these are slid tightly together this works exactly the same to provide strength on its.
    Each segment would look more like this
    \
    \\
    \\
    \
    Then interlock together

    • @final_catalyst
      @final_catalyst Рік тому

      Thanks for the like, if you want, I can draw up the more detailed design for the segments. They would be one piece, should be reasonable to machine out before heat treating.
      Parts would interlock (top downish view)
      |
      |||
      | |
      With the "chain link" you have being slotted into the segments keeping them dropping only so far, with a central line male female pin for the cable to fit down. This should allow strength and protection for the cable as the cutting portion should remain covering these gaps as folded.
      So let me know if you want and where to send more detail designs?

    • @NjordArtisan

    I think your focusing on a heavy cut when what you might want is more of a barbed cutter that can wrap limbs. A interlocking tube with 3 evenly spread bladed edges that point inwards (like saw teeth) is what I've been thinking. As for locking, a device at the end that you can pull the cord through before it locks. Less conventional sword and more reach. (As an added note, the tubes can be free floating but if you make a scabared with a twist guide they can be realigned.)
    Regardless, nice project.

    How about adding small extensions on each blade pice so that when retracted they would prevent pieces from moving from side to side.
    They could also help with cutting between the blades when the sword is extended.
    On more radical changes you could try to have 2 lines that would goes along side each other. It would prevent it somewhat from bending from edge to back of the blade but would help with keeping it together.
    Lastly you could try move/ add line on the back of the blade (opposite side from the edge), then blade would not get stuck on the line when cutting and with blade pieces being able to intervine when contracted it could keep itself together much better.

    • @greedier-7661
      @greedier-7661 Рік тому +1

      Also different idea of making the whip sword would be to have blade with locking mechanism for each segment attached to releasing mechanism in the handle and between all the blade pieces there would be springs and pice of steel (that could be sharpened). blades would have extended holes so that those steel pieces could move up or down or simply keep sword together when extended.
      When released spring would just extend the sword. And recombining it could be achieved by punching the blade down to the ground so it would lock back.
      It would be more rigid because springs would keep it more aligned and steel pieces could keep it from bending to much.
