  • The first Monday in May: red carpet dresses overdose at the Metropolitan Museum (MET') in New York! This year's exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton, is about Rei Kawakubo, the designer of Comme des Garcons. The theme for the party was "Avant-Garde". In this video I show the best dressed and worst dressed at the MET gala!
    What would you have worn to the party?...

    I agree with you totally, while i loved the Zendaya dress, i respect Rihanna and Katy Perry 's choices more. I get mad when people don't play by the rules. It's not a ''come as you are'' party!

      I would like to wear one of those corset-type tops molded out of solid plastic or sheet metal. Or something "spacy" from the 60s, though that would be vintage avantgarde.

    i was so disappointed by all the people who didn't follow the theme of the gala! it's like they didn't care about why they where there, and just went to make sure they were talked about... i'll never understand why people choose to be boring.

      Gintare Zabutkaite That's a good question, I want the answer too. Maybe when you produce something ridiculous it draws so much attention (lady Gaga's huge heels & meat dress, remember?) that people want it irrespective of its practicality. I mean I'm sure she's a high end expensive brand, and rich people often don't put much thought into their purchase. Also maybe she was successful more due to the art aspect than the fashion, but that's just my guess.

    Thank you for making a video about this! I felt so annoyed about how many celebs stuck with a pretty gown or cocktail dress instead of using this opportunity and their fortunes to do something artful and unique that added to night by adhering to the theme!

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  7 років тому +27

      I'm glad you agree ;-) PS: most designers pay the celebrities to wear their designs, so it's not even about money... Re-PS: Comme des Garcons never pays,anyone, which I find very classy.

    • @majordudette
      @majordudette 7 років тому +5

      I agree. I think this theme was the least successful in recent years - the designers dressing the celebs just couldn't give a crap. At least that's how I see it.

    • @BitznPiecez
      @BitznPiecez 7 років тому +4

      Elizabeth Durham if that is the case wherethe designers have active choice on which dress is given to the celebs to wear , then they themselves do a disservice to the thematic nature of the gala..... then its just about looking pretty vs acknowledging the artistes, imo

      They aren't paying for any of this. The socialites pay. The stars are all sponsored! They only pay their stylists.

    Anna Wintour never wears anything related to the theme. Every year, no matter what theme it is.

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  7 років тому +44

      ... and she is the one deciding the theme, every year :-/

    • @welljustwatchme
      @welljustwatchme 7 років тому +18

      I am so bored by Anna Wintour. She basically wears the same dress and shoes no matter what. Only thing that changes is the colour and maybe the amount of sequins and feathers. I'm so tired of her tea length t-shirt dresses and point shoes. Ugh.

    • @WA-pd2cc
      @WA-pd2cc 7 років тому +23

      JP S that's because people like Wintour ie someone who's a "decider" the boss, ie someone who makes a lot of decision everyday & those decisions affect the larger scheme of things as well. It eventually gives them "decision fatigue".
      So such people decide on one thing- especially sartorially, (because they have to dress themselves everyday) and stick to that decision forever. Eg: Steve jobs, Barack Obama, Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren etc.
      Even Rei Kawakubo herself appears the same- because of her never changing hairstyle. Deciding on a "uniform" frees up your mind to move onto other, more important things.

    • @WA-pd2cc
      @WA-pd2cc 7 років тому +21

      blackrose1234100 And another important thing to note is all who experimented are mostly musicians (Perry, Rihanna, Knowles) or people trying to establish themselves solidly in the scene- Tracee Ross, Cara Delevigne, Priyanka Chopra. All actresses & all managed to be as "conservative" as possible while trying to experiment.
      And people like K Jenner & Bella Hadid played it safe by following the "check-out-my-body" trick.

    For me...I would have dressed like a 61year old (my age) NY streets homeless bag lady! An example of the human body and spirit and (fashion of course)exposure to poverty, weather, silence and solitude in the midst of city mayhem...taken from the theme of "fashion exposed to radiation exposure!

    question : how does an avant garde propel a designer to commercial success when the design in itself looks close to impractical?

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  7 років тому +47

      great question: Rei Kawakubo is seen as a designer who inspires the others. She has a small but very loyal customer base among socialites / press professionals / well-earning fashionistas. AND the company has multiple "commercial" lines like PLAY (the brand with the heart and the little eyes on the chest), which are more market-ready and benefit from the aura of her designer collection.

      I am old, so I remember the comme des garcon initial intro into fashion. Back then, it was mostly the oversized, baggy, torn, worn, dull monochrome looks that she introduced. They may not have been conventionally pretty, but they caught the attention of the post-apocalyptic imagination - Blade Runner and then Mad Max etc. The overall look had quite a long life and influenced a lot of designers.

    Agree with you WORD FOR WORD. EXACTLY what I thought after seeing all the looks!
    To me Riri really killed it. Best dressed lady around. The angels on the other hand were all such a disappointment. They'd be spectacular if they wore sacks! What is the point of looking "just beautiful" for a Kawakubo themed event?
    However I think Kendall Jenner ought to get some points. While her outfit initially looked like yet another play on Mcgowan's '98 VMA look, a closer look and details of what it took to create the gown shows that it was, at the end of the day, a true work of art which in turn fits in with the theme.
    Also, I'd like to know what you thought of Priyanka Chopra's look? I thought she was rather spectacular bit could not quite make up my mind about whether or not it fit into the theme.

    Actually, I didn't even know that there is such a thing as a Met Gala, but I love the idea. Looking at what you explained so beautifully about the art of Rei Kawakubo, I wonder if taking the whole thing about the selfie-theme one step further would be to only send a photographic image of yourself, like a big cardboard dummy?! Or maybe carrying it in front of you like another version of yourself? ;-))

    Love you Justine!!!! So thorough! I always wonder why the celebs who don't even bother with the theme show up???

    Yes!! Bravo. I love when the theme or designer is king/queen and all fashions display something relevant to that. To simply wear a beautiful dress is so boring. Thank you for highlighting that idea. Fingers crossed for 2019 that more are listening. The Met Ball should be fun and art fashion!

    THANK YOU! I was saying the same thing, every magazine was putting the outfits closest to the theme in the worst-dresses lists; they're so boring!

    This is my favourite post so far. I wish the last ten years of Met gala would be done like this.

    I love your channel more and more every time I see a new video. Since you mentioned subtitles, I would be very happy if your content was translated in French, as I'm currently learning your language. =) Apart from that, tu es géniale, Justine! ;)

    Thank you for explaining why dressing for the theme is important. Year after year I see people deride the on theme looks while they compliment the boring ballgowns and it's clear that they don't know what they're talking about. I hope more people watch this video and do their research.

    I loved how you explained what the party was about and why some people met the challenge and some didn't. I think if you go to this type of event you should at least try to go for the theme.

    loved Rihanna. and I love you Justin. you are beginning to feel like my best friend😍😍😍😍
    one more thing, Avant garde doesn't simply have to comply to dresses ... even though it was met gala and dresses were " the talk of the town", I guess, Cara was quite Avant garde in her make up. it's a well timed theme . we can move to Avant garde in our school of thoughts, in ways we view ideas, politics and world peace. it's a great time in world history to actually start new and experimental stuff. me, being a doctor, would want Avant garde in the way I treat my patients, in my approach to them and in my approach to medicine. much love to you Justin

    Thanks for a good review, I enjoyed watching it ! Good points and good analysis, focusing on the theme and what the event ia all about not just on "who was prettier at the ball". P.s. I might be mistaken, but as I know Cara shaved her head for a movie, not for this event.
