In this video I will show you from start to finish how to engrave the best images possible on to slate.
Slate coasters are one of the best beginner projects because they are a relatively low cost to purchase and if you mess up like I have (multiple times), with a bit of elbow grease or a powered sander you can quickly remove your mistake and re-prep your coaster again and have another go, (OR FOUR).
As stated in the video here is the link to my in-depth video to dial in your settings...... Enjoy.

Thanks, it is always great to hear from other people and how they do it. Just the little simple comments during processes often make a difference to something i havent considered. And yours was one of those situations with too much power causing a washout in the image. Many thanks.
Thank you for you're message. It really means a lot.
Fantastic Video friend! This is the only video that I have watched where someone goes in on the project blind to use your expertise to show us the process correctly. Keep up the great work man!
Thank you.
Outstanding tutorials your detailed descriptions of how you set up the image were really helpful. Thanks mate.
Thank you very much. Your kind words mean a lot.
Excellent demonstration with usable settings and information. I'm thinking about doing a set of coasters for my city's historic locations. This is the perfect starting place. Thanks much!
Have fun!
Gracias!!!! Otro vídeo para mi lista láser 👍👍
Absolutely appreciative of your in-depth sharing of knowledge and tips. THANK YOU. Well done. You are a very patient and thoughtful instructor.
Thank you very much for your kind words
Got my first Laser engraver just 2 days ago and have been trying to get a coaster to show a nice image. As others have stated below people say do this and that but never really explain it or show you exactly what they mean so this video was so helpful. Also was not aware you could sand them back and try again so that makes my mistakes easier to take :)
Well clearly as above I am a noob but I followed along with this and when using greyscale it literally just engravers a grey blob :( Did try Jarvis and it sorta showed some detail but again was not clear at all. I am guessing I am struggling with the laser power and the speed. Oh well all a learning curve. Have the Falcon Pro 2 with 40w laser but changed it to 22w output. Might try the free 1.6W laser that also came with the printer.
I have watched so many slate engravings , and yours is far the best and in-depth to get me going Thank you for sharing
You are very welcome. Thank you for your comment. It means a lot.
I think DaVinci said that? Not sure.great video, thanks for an the info, directions, and pro tips!
Can't wait to try mine 😸
Thanks for watching!
Thank you the adjustments you showed in LB with gamma, brightness, and contrast helped me understand their function.
Fantastic, I'm glad I could help
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Brilliant video. Ive been struggling for months trying to convert photos to slate.
This is by far the best video for this.
I couldn't figure out some of the settings but i have a slightly older version of Lightburn.
Im off to Etsy now to buy the 3D Christmas bauble file.
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for purchasing my file I really appreciate it.
First and foremost, great tutorial, lots of great information in here that was exactly what I needed. I really appreciate that you did this with a lower end (ish) diode laser as this is what I have, (Otur LM2, Sculpfun S9, and Wainlux K10) So many of the tutorials out here you go to looking for setting information only to find they are using high end commercial lasers that require totally different settings that what I need. Secondly, and I picked up on this before you began the burn, I would have backed up just a little on the Image, I think cutting off the top of your head on the image triggered my OCD just a little, lol. This thought brings up a question, would there be an advantage to creating the "mask" maybe 1/8" or so larger than the media you are engraving, so that you know it goes all the way to the edge of the media you are using? (just a general question there, I am pretty sure that your engraving did infact go to or beyond just slightly the edges of the slate.)
Thank you for the detailed instructions. Always looking for ways to improve my slate. Adjustments I have not considered. Headed out to the shop to give it a go. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
bloody marvellooouuuuus! thank you so much for taking the time to make and share your work...ive been doing this badly for so long and you have inspired me to do better...thank you
You're very welcome!
Some great advice. Thank you 🙂
You're welcome
Wow, well done! Your work deserves 10 out of 10 for an in-depth project explanation. However, I am still struggling with a 10 w output laser at the setting you set out. What am I doing wrong?
Excellent video, great presentation. Thank you
Thank you for your comment it's much appreciated.
Great video.
Thank you.
Great video thanks for the details. I will have to try doing some engraves in slate.
Go for it!
I recently purchased a Longer Ray 5 10w unit. I want to learn about laser engraving. This is an outstanding video, every step was explained very well. My only question is, what type of paint did you use?
Thank you for your positive comment. The paint i used was just an off the shelf automotive spray paint.
I am currently working on 3 key setup videos on using test files to get lasers dialled in for the best results engraving, cutting and kerf adjustment. So if you are interested keep an eye out for those in the near future.
Thanks again.
Great video, a lot of good information I was looking for. Thank you
Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful.
Love your way
I'm smarter now
Thank you.
I have found that several coats of polyurethane spray paint will really make images pop. The first coat or two might not look too good, but another coat or two makes slate images look very good. And, if the slate is actually going to be used for a coaster, it will protect from staining.
Are you applying the all layers of coating pre engraving or half pre and part post production?
Why do you have to spray paint it black beforehand? Is that just to get an even color across the entire coaster so the laser doesn't give wonky gradations?
thanks for this exerlent video
You are welcome!
I missed what you sprayed on the coasters before you put them in the laser. What was the spray? Thanks!
I used an automotive spray paint.
Doesn't the paint affect the natural water absorption of the slate?
Grate video!
Thank you
great video - i have an A20Pro and I have tried slate coasters with some success - I have two questions for you why do you paint your coaster black before engraving. Secondly when you are finished engraving do you clean the slate off with a cleaning agent
Thank you. I only use paint to give the images more contrast. I also like to sand my slate flat, as I prefer the flat look to the slate rather than the natural wayveyness to slate. Because I sand the slate flat, it becomes a lighter colour, which is another reason why I do it. After engraving, I use compressed air to remove any debris.
Great video, loved it and learnt something about Lightburn. Thank you for this video. I'm just starting with laser engraving, what kind of spray do you use after sanding the coasters?
Thank you. Prior to laser engraving, I use a matte black automotive spray paint. If I can't source matte paint, I'll settle for using a satin finish but never use a gloss. It is hard to see your finished result if you finish with a gloss in certain lights.
@@MadeBetterWithKnowledge Thank you for your quick reply.👍
Your welcome.
Why don’t you just etch the coaster without sanding and painting? You get a really good contrast between the original darker split surface and the etched parts. I do this all the time with anything from text or logos up to detailed photos.
trying to figure out my speed and power on that slate is the fear... I think that's something I'm going to try and tackle tomorrow
My head hurts with this one 😬😬
Thank you for the inspiration!
After it’s done do you spray lacquer it to protect the image or just leave it be?
You are welcome.
I have left mine as they are. There are videos on youtube already about different finishes for slate. I know you can lose detail in your engravings by applying a gloss finish to them so I would refrain from using any gloss product to protect them. I have seen people use different oils and matte finishes.
I hope this helps.
Nice video could you buy some cheap slate and add some feet to it probably be cheaper 🤷
Thank you. Question though… where did you get your hat?
Haha. Well that's a question I can't answer. My wife bought this hat for me last year.
What did you spray on it? I'm using xtool 10 watt f1 ultra.
I used an automotive spray paint
Please use dust mask when sanding stone to avoid silicosis!
If I apply a color underneath the black coating, does the laser show that color or does it engrave through to the stone surface?
Depending on how thick you put the layer of colour on you should get that colour showing through. What you will need to do is an engraving test for a power scale. If your not sure how to do one there are videos on youtube how to do a test card and I will be putting my own video out on how to create one in lightburn soon.
I hope this helps.
@@MadeBetterWithKnowledge thank you!
@@MadeBetterWithKnowledge I found it, using masking tape and lasercut that in to the shape I want, and then paint over it :D So simple lol
Sorry what did you spray on the Coaster is that paint if so what typr please I know marking spray is crazy expensive in Canada I just gfotg my laser and want to make these Thank you I ordered 36 coasters just not sure what you sprayed them with Thank you !
I used an automotive matt black spray paint.
Great tutorial. Just a question: I follow the instructions with the exception of me having a round coaster, but when I pull up the preview window, it’s all white. If I change the mode to Stucki, I get a good preview. So then I decided to run the job, and it’s all white on the coaster.
Any idea to why that is?
Thank you.
Really ought to be wearing a mask/respirator when machine sanding these. Silicosis is not something to screw with.
I think about breathing protection when watching so many of these videos. PPE is no joke.
Do you use test grids on materials?
Do you have a video on how you prep your slate?
Yes absolutely. Every material that I can use on my laser cutters I test thoroughly before attempting a project.
I have no other videos on how to prep slate yet, other than what I covered in this video on how I prep slate before engraving.
Which paint did you use before engraving the slate coasters?
A matte black spray paint
Hi, enjoyed your video and have subscribed and liked.
Wondering, why does the black slate need a coating of black paint before engraving?
What would it come out like if no coating was used, or if a clear coat was used?
None of Da Vinci's paintings were ever fully completed, he always had more he wanted to do.
hoow do you price them ?
Type of paint?
I used an automotive black spray paint
When sanding slate, use a mask! Slate contains silica, and you don’t want silicosis.
@MadeBetterWithKnowledge
THANK YOU, HOPE I CAN FIND VIDEO AGAIN, VERY BEST SO FAR.
I THINK I'VE MANAGED TO DOWNLOAD GIMP AND INSTALL IT.
I'M AN OLD TWAT, JUST BOUGHT A LASER HOPING TO ENGRAVE ON SOME SCRAP MARBLE IMAGES OF MY WIFE, MAM AND MAYBE, MAYBE THE mother in law, coz I WANT TO PUT THEIR IMAGES ON MARBLE AT THEIR GRAVESTONES.
So thank you so much, but I will need to find this video again, once the laser is set up.
