- Here's my sketchbook I submitted for the character animation program at calarts. This was my third time applying and this time around, I drew wth I wanted. Btw, I also filmed this just before I sent it in.

belenciaga Awesome, can’t wait to see yours! I started my sketchbook late August and finished in December. I was really done in November but I kept going back to fill empty spaces and adding color. Then again, take your time
Videos like these give an instant boost of inspiration and NEED to go and practise. I think this type of talent is every young artists dream!! Observational drawings are hard to do (for me at least), but really fun to look at, in my own sketchbook I really enjoy looking back at those as they can bring so many memories and really be an essential to a well used sketchbook (although every sketchbook is well used, with the only exeption, the one you leave empty). Also your use of colour is beatyful, the motorbikes were amazing and just the general layout of every page. Most students that go to calarts have just such great layout skills (who knows maybe they plan ahead or rip out a ton of pages), and I know it's not necessary for people who make art for fun, but I really aspire that. Thank you, and good luck in school!
äää aaa Hey I’m glad this video inspired you! Before I applied, I watch a ton of accepted Calarts sketchbooks too! I would watch thinking this is what they’re looking for. In the end, no sketchbook is the same, just gotta be yourself!!

Not sure if you’re Hmong or not (seems like you might be from your spelling of Yaj), but if you are, it’s inspiring and awesome to see a fellow Hmong person go out and reach for their dreams. Especially since it involves art and it’s amazing that you got accepted into Calarts! I’ve always wanted to go there myself, but the tuition is waaaaay too high (and I already have debts and a degree... a useless one). I hope the best for you and you should definitely upload more videos of your drawings!!! Good luck and keep chasing after your dreams!!!

tired artist haha thank you! I try my best to have a point of focus. Yes definitely! My best advice would be to be yourself in your sketchbook! Show your thought process, draw what you like or see in your day to day life. Use mediums you are comfortable with to show your artistic skills. In the end, don’t rush and have fun 😁

parappa the rapper For sure! I used micron drawing pens and black India ink. Lol for the ramen painting, I used nicker poster coloring.

Jade's Vlogs haha thank you!! And yes, studying anatomy is the only way. A lot comes life drawing and environmental studies. I still struggle with perspective, but I try to learn from other artist and practice their techniques

This sketchbook, just like all the others I’ve seen that’ve been accepted, is fantastic man! Hope you don’t mind me asking how long you’ve been drawing, and about how long this project took you to finish? I’m about to apply to an easier art school and plan on spending the first two years really buckling down and improving before making the jump and applying to CalArts. No problem! I’ve been drawing all my life but it wasn’t til high school when I took it seriously and decided to make this my career. I started my sketchbook late August and finished in December. I love your plan man! That’s exactly what I did, I attend a technical college learning animation before I made the big jump to go to Calarts. Do what works for you and you’ll be just fine!

MadDevilOfficial Thank youu! And sure I can share my experience. I attended Calarts Summer Session in 2018 and it was a blast! It was insightful to learn from instructors who has worked and still is working for the industry. We watched movies and drew for homework, what can be better than that?! I think school is what you make out of it. I believe there’s ways to make it to the industry without school/degree. But for me, I still have a lot to learn so that’s why I chose school.

Xai Yaj hahahha no i didnt apply cause even if I got accepted I could never afford it... I considered applying to others but even if I could just afford the collage, I have to move from the other side of the world. I’m going next year to the only school that has an animation program in my country... it might not be the best animation collage out there but it’s what I have access to 😅
Xai Yaj i also thought maybe once I graduate here to apply to Calarts and some others and do the 3rd and 4th year only, by then i should have my own money. Having two titles and 6 years of college should be good enough for applying for jobs 😅
Paulina Garay Sounds like a plan! Nowadays animations is all about network. Getting a job doesn’t necessarily mean going to school for it too. Hope to see you in the industry soon !

Hey! I’m an artist aspiring to go to Calarts one day, so I was wondering a couple things. How did you improve line confidence? (Was it just constantly drawing or was were and techniques) or learning anything new wether that’d be animals or backgrounds did you go to any special lessons or was it all self taught? (For animals did you study them or learn just the general structure?) For backgrounds/ scenery/ buildings, did you free hand them all? (Did you ever use a tool like a ruler or have you sketched anything before hand?) Also how long did you take on your sketchbook, and if there anywhere you posted your portfolio?

Emily Kane Yes definitely! I got confident with my lines by drawing with pen so mistakes became part of the drawing. You might hear this a lot, but I also did a ton of blind contours. Blind contours really helped me focus on my subject which resulted in better observation skills and attention to detail. After awhile you can start doing half blind and that’s the drawings you see in my sketchbook. When drawing people/figures, I don’t sketch, i go straight into the body parts that’s closest to me and work my way from there. I don’t draw animals often but when I do, I study the anatomy and bone structures. There’s just so many animals to chose from and they are all so unique. Buildings/structures don’t move so I take as long as I need to draw them, so I often do sketches first. It is fun to draw buildings freehand and sometimes the outcomes does look amazing too (this type of art is called reportage drawing) My sketchbook took about 5 months to make, drawing in it every once in awhile and filling in blank spaces/adding color towards the deadline. do you do any other practice in your sketchbook or only these sorts of 'unfinished' drawings? i have lots of pages in mine where im just experimenting with gesture or lines and they aren't anything good to look at. some of them are just copies of other artists as well for practice.
Starogre Yes, in my other sketchbooks I would do a lot of blind contours. I would also do light studies with paint and even just in B/W.
What type of pen or marker do ypu use for the colours?
mrstealyour mom Sure! I didn’t use markers to color. I used water color or poster paint to color. Main reason was for it not to bleed through to the other side. Blacks I used India ink or pentel brush
Hi i m aspiring high school who want to apply for Calarts in the future, is there any tips for drawing live figure and backgrounds, and where can u find model to do figure drawing. And did u study backgrounds with picture or an actual location?

SunnyIsAlive Ask away! You can always find models at figure drawing classes. For my local town, I had to pay to attend these drawing sessions. If you don’t have money, coffee shops and malls are a great place to start. I find drawing people in public more fun because you get so many ppl to choose from. Studies on location will be best when life drawing and doing environments. With Covid-19 in all, the internet is not too bad for figure drawing and finding pictures of places to draw from.

This is amazing dude! How did you do those drawings of the people sitting on the bus? How do you do those life drawings without the figure moving too much? It's incredible and I'm trying to go in that direction.
Thank you! People in public never stays still lol. If they move, I try to take photographic memories and draw base on that. Or if I have already drawn half their body, I will wait until someone else comes by and draw their half of the body to complete my figure. It’s a challenge but that’s the fun of it!
@@xaiyaj1516 That's awesome! What do you know about photographic memory and such? I just retain conceptual information, I can mostly just visualize a cloudy blob. How did you train that skill? This is incredible.
BigAssBillyBass Haha I’m still not the best at it, but a lot comes from just doing it. Over time you can fill in those blobs with other models you’ve drawn or certain clothing you’ve seen. Even clothing you wear lol. Sometime I pull figures from movies or books I’ve read.

I want to be accepted into calarts but I have a cartoony style. I'm trying to improve this summer but can you give some advice so I can better my style.
Nom Nom Studios Sure! It’s hard to define style. I myself don’t think I’ve found it yet haha. But style will come naturally and a way to help (for me at least) is lots of life drawing. For example, when I draw cartoons, I can never get the hands right. The perspective is off and the anatomy doesn’t look right. Only looking at real hands and incorporating it to your drawings will make it much better. You should read “Drawn to life” that book will dive much deeper into this
From looking at multiple calarts entries, I've noticed that they prefer sketchbooks that show off various techniques and different styles. Maybe do some live reference pictures or break down other art styles. Not only will this give you multiple styles, but it can also help you know more about your own style.

im always told to learn the fundamentals but how would i do that ? where should i start from square one ?
saiuhh There’s lots of ways to go about it. I think a good place to start would be life drawing. There you can learn anatomy, basic shapes and even lighting.
Im barely gonna be a jr and i want to go to cali arts but im completely self taugh and wasnt allowed to take art classes and im fraid my work isnt good enough when i see these accepted cali arts sketchbooks
Esme J Don’t we all think like that? lol You never know until you try. Calarts has national portfolio days where you can bring your work to them before you submit! They give great feed back and will steer you to what they are looking for. Don’t watch too much accepted Calarts sketchbook, that will misguide you to stop being yourself. You start drawing what you have seen and that’s what happened to me the first and second try. I know you got this, don’t worry 💪

Each video I see of that school gives me hope of going to sva in my state, I have plenty of books for reference , just rusty & lazy lol.

Third time applying? If you don't mind me asking, does that mean you got in on the third year after you applied senior year in high school? I'm an uprising sophomore going to another university right now and I'm wondering if I regret not going to art school or not. Would I be seeing other people my age if I do decide to apply next year (and get in, of course)?

Yeah for sure! We’re in the same boat. I didn’t pursue art until my sophomore year in college (2017). I took a break from school and applied to Calarts since then. Don’t worry about age, ppl that get accepted range from 18-21. I’m turning 24 and I’m still not the oldest in our freshman class. I hope this helps!

@@xaiyaj1516 I think age plays a factor though, because if an older person apply they usually put in very good effort and keeper for life. Not always just I feel the pressure of age force you to try your best & make it count.

Lapis Lazuli Thank you! And sure, filling a whole page can sometimes be easy and hard. What works for me is coming back to the drawing in a week. I would continue to add to it and do coloring touch ups.
