Just rode home after finishing work on a rainy Saturday, watched Amanda and her brother riding the badlands in 104 degrees ,so jealous. Really enjoying watching your journey from a cold grey wet England, keep up the good work , an English man seeing the USA through the magpies eyes absolutely brilliant thank you loads
Thanks so much Duncan! It's getting pretty gloomy over here in Portland, OR now too, so I'm enjoying getting to relive the sunshine while editing these!
Loved the dance at 12:00... Obviously not dancing due to the heat but with the expectation of the rest of the trip would bring. Nothing, nothing like the freedom of a long, cross country motorcycle ride. Wonderful story of paying it forward... hope you've continued it. Good stuff Amanda.. makes me sad in knowing that the "other" season is now beginning to stare at us.... ".....soon winter's chill will fill our night and morning's dawn yield fields of white. Through icy breeze and arctic siege we will face long winter's plight, but spring will come, thence summer sun, for change is but the test of life..."
Yes I have had to replace a phone on a trip. Not mine but my travel buddy. He and I were on our way to the Upper Peninsula in MI. As we were crossing the 5 mile long Mackinac Bridge I saw something slide across the metal grating in front of me. His I-phone. Although a crew located it and brought its remains to us it was destroyed. It took us the entire next day to get it replaced as it was insured. We had to get a hotel so they had an address to send it to. UPS then said they couldn't deliver it because we didn't give them a room number so we had to drive 20+ miles to the shipping terminal, pick it up, drive back to the Verizon store to get it activated and set up. Finally replaced and on the road again. It was a great 10 days in Upper Peninsula in Michigan. I'm happy you had a safe journey and a great time.
The Badlands, desolate, hot, but beautiful in their own way. Great video. Thanks for all the views of South Dakota. A lot of things to see out there! Ride safe Amanda!
I have never had to replace a phone on a trip. The sky around you starting at 10:28 is one of the things I miss about living in the midwest. I heard a saying that you could see into tomorrow, because it was so wide open. At least you never "accidentally" drive into a storm in eastern S.D. because you can see it coming for hours and hours.Thank you Amanda for the trip through my home state of S.D. I know a lot of people say the flat straight roads aren't fun, but some of the times it is nice just to ride along a straight road in the middle of nowhere S.D. Oh, I forgot about the bugs, they are bad here in N.C. but I think there are actually more in S.D.
Another great episode Amanda. It's cool, although slightly disconcerting, watching you dancing on the bike while riding. Shows how much you're enjoying the moment.
I stayed in exactly the same hotel in Rochester back in May when I was going west from Indiana. The restaurant next door was okay but not amazing. I'm sure you've noticed by my consistent likes today that I've watched the entire trip so far today. It's interesting watching someone else experience some of the places that I've been through and how their experience is slightly different.
Love paying it forward. Makes life worth getting out there and meeting people. My elderly neighbors when we lived in Florida started that to us, they were amazing and taught us a lot.
Wow, the Badlands are beautiful!! I didn't expect that! Yes! My phone cooked itself on the way to Hawaii, so I had a new phone shipped there... It was a total pain in the butt, but a great way to really disconnect from EVERYTHING for a few days!
I has a secret for you! shhh shhh *whispers: Makoshika State Park in Montana has very similar formations and like half the people, AND it has SHADDDE lol and no I'm totally not biased because it's in Montana lol Oh gosh trying to find a new phone in Hawaii yeeesh
You're brother has an incredibly soothing effect. Like, just seeing his face and temperament is very calming. I could be way off on that, and he may be a whole different person off camera. 😆 Your experience in the sun is no joke, and my wife and I had a similar experience this summer. When someone offers to help, it really makes a difference. No doubt, we will be paying it forward next time we get the chance! Got a full dose of Dancin' Amanda in this video! ❤ Always makes me smile! Ah, that (I'm assuming) wet rag for bugs is a life saver, I bet! Never had to replace a phone on a trip, but we did have our car stereo poop out on us. We had to stop at a Best Buy and grab some portable speakers, cuz long trips with no music or spoken word would be unbearable.

As someone who’s primary riding is an hour or so leisurely ride through the county roads, my take away from this video is the strategically placed rag in the left jacket pocket for wiping bugs from the visor.
I grew up here in So. Dak. Even though our water was out of the Missouri river it was still pretty hard. My dad use to joke about getting a sharp knife to carve a glass of water off the tap. lol
Never had to replace a phone yet. But I get pretty careless with my phone on the bike. I take it off of the mount if it starts to rain all while riding at a high speed. Badlands looks amazing! We rode through, but didn’t get to see the visitor center. Really love the shot of you on that narrow trail!! That was very cool! We didn’t get to visit much of it because I injured myself in a trip n’ fall incident, and we were in a rush to get to our next stop on the first day of our trip back home.
I've been riding more yarns that you have been on this Earth. Some folks make fun of me, BUT I take one of those small collapsible umbrellas just for emergencies. Needing shade is one of them. Anyhoo, enjoy your videos. You know we really have those "Oh yeah, look at that." moment when you go to a place we've been. Also, I don't fast forward through your videos like some because you do such a great job on your editing. Bugs on the face....sign of a happy biker.....and no on the phone replacement. Prolly coz I only use it at night when stopped to report in and it's not used otherwise unless there is an emergency.....Thanks for sharing/posting.
I live in chamberlain. This summer my 18yo brother and i went on his first motorcycle trip through the badlands and to Deadwood where our older brother lives. He on his virago 250 "cruiser" and myself on my 1985 honda sabre. It was fun going from east to west on all that gravel road dodging goats and prairie dogs haha. I recently sold my beloved sabre v65 and got a 2004 BMW GS so i can do more gravel roads and light trails with confidence (and way smoother)
Loving the free dance shots. I've missed them. Btw... I've learned to avoid areas where there are giant windmill farms.... The wind is usually nasty. Safe travels !!!
I enjoy watching your journey, kind of surprised you didn’t go thru Mitchell SD and see the Corn Palace but anyway the side roads are just as nice when your in central and Eastern SD.
It was around 98 when I was there. That was hot for this easterner. Last day a storm moved in and we spent about 2 hours during dusk chasing it for spectacular photos.
Amanda, it’s great to see how much fun you allow yourself to have!!love it! Btw..my honey and I are planning on a trip from CO to SD then to MT (Glacier Nat Park) and now must include the Badlands! Looks amazing!!! Thinking I will have to travel late spring as I dehydrate easily. Glad you met that road angel! 🏍💕Ride on!
End screen answer ... yes and in Europe!!! Even a bigger pain in the butt!!! But ironically cell phones over there are soooooo much friendlier and easier to use!!!
I'm so glad that passerby offered water. That was part of why I tend to overstock on water on the road - so I have extra for various reasons, including if it is necessary for someone else. I remember a situation in New Mexico on my 2014 trip with my first wife. We'd pulled out of Carlsbad and she said that she felt over-heated and drowsy. I quickly found a place to pull off and we had some water (she was riding a 1998 R1100R pulling a PiggyBacker trailer and it had a cooler with bottled water on ice) plus I soaked a clean wash rag I had brought along in the melt water and put that on the back of her neck. When she got feeling better I soaked the rag again and had her put it over her chest while we rode the 30-ish miles to a place to stop. Then we got to a restaurant and in A/C for a couple hours.
Thankfully I have only ever broken one phone and I was home. I can imagine it would be frustrating though. Great video as always, scenery is amazing and I will have to add that to my must see places.
Dancing, in full kit, in 104 degrees, in the Badlands.... that really is suffering for your art. End screen answer: Nope. But I did have a laptop suddenly decide at 7.00 pm one evening it needed to update some vital and vast amount of software when I was staying in a rural Airbnb in Wales with REALLY slow download speeds. At 6am the next morning I found out it was a graphics app that I had never and will never use.... wow, thanks Microsoft! Luvvin the series Amanda.
No not on a trip just after I threw it against a concrete wall and it shattered into a million pieces... Thanks for sharing... Much love... Stay healthy and safe...
The Badlands look bad a$$. 2022 will be my year for Sturgis. I hope to get a chance to see that as well. As far as phone replacement, 2 years in a row, while visiting my sister during the holidays. Love your videos.❤️
1) Your videography skills continue to impress, Amanda. You're very talented. 2) I can ride with your bro for hours without neither of us saying a word. :) 3) Freedom reigns in South Dakota!
Cornfields galore....flatlanders I was now in mountains. Did you get to see the lightening bugs....hopefully before they imploded on the face shield?! Dropped my favorite phone on concrete in Hawaii and that was all she wrote. Couldn't believe there are 2 Costco's on Oahu island. 👍
I dare say it was nice that Gary was with you, even if only for a short time.....I dont ride well with others. Both my brothers are quite a few steps ahead of me, ability wise.......and it isnt good when one tries to ride according to someone else's abilities. 😱
Hi! I came from motovlog.com to check out your channel! (just joined the forum) love your suggestions for growing channels :) these shots were freaking sick. I absolutely miss riding in the mountains. I'm in FL now and it's hella flat lol. Would love to do a ride cross country one day
It's been great to watch you and brother riding together. I could see it in your face how you felt as you both headed separate directions (it's the same look that I would have on my face every time I'd pull out of my daughter's driveway in Ft Smith Arkansas heading back to Bristol TN 😔). Truly awesome video despite, though The shots of you down in the Badlands dancing were epic shots! 😁 I have not (phone on a trip), no. Happy weekend, my friend! 😊✌
The Badlands is another beautiful place. I'm glad you and your brother got to see it. Negative on the phone replacement. I had Sprint and the only tower they had in SD was in Sioux City, no reception in most of the western states. 👍😎
I’m really enjoying your videos! The creative things you do in your videos to create an outro to a scene or to transition into a new one is impressive. I’m taking notes and using them in my own content, I hope that’s alright! 😂
Great video! Out there doing the thing! Love the little dance party in the Badlands and on the bike by the windmills! Loved the music in this episode! Sad to see brother leave 😕. Rolling on with the adventure! Minnesota woohooo 👍🏻
I made a trip from Portland to the Chicago area back in summer of 2017...left Portland on July 5th (you might remember that summer...twas hot!) Although it never reached 104 it was soooooo miserable 😂🤣😅 Had to make lots of stops. The next leg from Chicago to Shreveport was even worse! Looks like you had a good time though 😀
Why yes I have replaced a phone on a trip! haha. Looking forward to your Milwaukee video. I enjoyed my time there last week, and I'm in Denver right now which I expect you'll have a video of.
Hopefully it won't dissapoint, but I don't have as much footage as I thought I would, after reviewing it seems that my GoPro had some kind of malfunction after the heat in the Badlands and was only recording half the time when I would push the button 🙄 sooo that's awesome. Makes me extra glad I was running with like five cameras XD
@@AstheMagpieFlies Ahhhh. I decided to change my POV setup and the mic placement didn't work for the first few videos. It happens. Hope you liked Milwaukee. I'm definitely going back sometime.
****probably the shortest comment I will ever make**** I know I am not alone in saying this... You make me smile! No phone replacements ON a trip but two AFTER lol
Hey Ryan! Only when there's something interesting, or if I realize I haven't gotten a clip in a while, because I also want to make sure I'm capturing the landscape changing from one thing to another. But I don't just let the camera run. I normally have a bunch of like 1-2min clips instead of a bunch of super long clips, it makes editing a lot faster. However that also means my chances of capturing something that was unexpected like a crash or something like that, are very low. buuut I think it's worth it for how much it speeds up my work flow to not have to scrub through a 30 min clip of helmet cam footage.
Laughing at the bugs! I spent my early life in MN and many summers there and in the woods of WI. The bugs are relentless and everywhere! They all want blood except the most excellent fireflies. I still have a little PTSD from some of the battles. I knew they were going to come up! Not one minute after the thought, and there they were. 😂. I almost lost a phone once, but realized it was missing soon enough to turn back. That’s about enough stress for me to take on any trip. The badlands are awesome! And , yeah, hotter than heck! Those trails on top of the buttes really get the heart pumping! And she dances?! Braver than me.
Dancing the Badlands...😬🤣🤣💃💃💃 It’s a beautiful place, but can be unforgiving. By, brother.... no shame in eating steamed vegetables out of the bag, I’ve done it plenty of times.
You got that right! lol I was torn between being proud of spending so little on dinner, and also feeling like I probably could have put that in a bowl XD
Thank you D Medina , I really appreciate that! lol he is pretty mellow, I didn't realize until I got back and was editing that I managed to like not get any shots of him talking XD
Thanks so much Scott! The Scorpion Gear is great for just about everything except for the rain and snow. I think for the cold though that has a lot to do with your layering system FIRST, /then/ you're outer layer. I have a whole video about riding in the cold here (and yes my Scorpion gear is in the video too): ua-cam.com/video/Takw0E-GgH0/v-deo.html
@@AstheMagpieFlies I used to live in Gresham and worked at Pacific Office Automations in Beaverton right off The 26. Yes those were some cold rides into work.
first up amanda good video and can you tell me your name as the magpie flies is that named after a black and white bird because thats a magpie here in australia lol 👍👍👍😊😊😊💕💕💕
Thank you Toby. lol There are a LOT of subspecies of Magpies. My channel name is based off the Eurasian magpie which is what we have here in the States. They're black and white, but their black has some beautiful greens and purples in it when the sun hits them just right.
Crickets kicked my butt riding through there in July 2020 (coming back from Montana *daughter's place). If I knew when you were riding here (MN) I could have set you up ! Extra room in house and if that wasn't your "bisquick" we do have 9 acres you could have set up your tent....oh, well next time, Amanda ❤👍🏍Love your enthusiasm and keeping strong 🥴😊during the heat. Ride safe and enjoy your day!🏍"WindSister"..ps.never had get a phone replacement but did have to get a new charger 🥴
Thanks 😊 Ya I was in such a rush I never really knew where I'd be for the night until maybe an hour before, not super ideal if you're trying to be a good guest lol I missed a lot of people on this one! Hopefully the next go around is a little less hectic buuut who knows, it's me after all lol
No, I haven't. Although I did drop a DSLR camera that I had borrowed from my son and broke the lens. Oh boy - $$$$! Thanks for sharing Amanda and keep on riding!
Oohhhh OUCH! I feel that, have already had to replace two lenses after breaking them on a trip AND had to pay to have the autofocus fixed on the a7rii after dropping the bike when the tank bag was open. Not fun lol
@@AstheMagpieFlies Indeed! Now I'm looking to purchase a GoPro or similar video recorder and a point and shoot camera. I've learned an expensive lesson, for sure! Thank you for your replies and take care! See you in the next episode Amanda. :D
?? I've had the Cb500x since 2016. And this whole trip has been on this bike soooo maybe you better start at the beginning of the series. Or better yet watch this one and THEN start the Flight of the Magpie series: ua-cam.com/video/wLjolC35Gnw/v-deo.html
Seeing you dancing on that ridge I was thinking "oh she's going to pay for that". They you're talking about heat and your brother filmed your hike out... The things you will do to "get the shot". My phone is provided by work, I got it in 2016 and they keep trying to upgrade me and I just ask why? This one still works. I'm not a huge phone guy... :-)
If BOTH were readily available, and money were no object, I don't really have a personal preference overall. Hoteling it is more convenient but sucks budget wise and doesn't really inspire my creativity. Camping is beautiful most of the time, easier on the wallet, but not convenient or good for making miles (ie using every scrap of sunlight to get as far as possible), can result in some cramped muscles if you didn't get the most ideal spot to lay your sleeping pad, but fuels my creativity in a way that makes me just want to capture everything. Everything has pros and cons lol Finding Camping spots in the Midwest/East Coast during the Pandemic however became VERY complicated/difficult without making reservations really far in advance. So there's a lot more hoteling it in this series than I would have done otherwise because I like to save money for other things like food and experiences.
@@AstheMagpieFlies makes sense ... its so easy on the wallet to camp ... i do as much camping as possible... every 3 or 4 days i hit a hotel to shower n give myself a break ... .. i enjoy your videos and what u are doing ... good job
Many small towns in this part of the country have camp sites - for free or very low cost (like $5) and many with electrical service and showers... For future reference - I use All Stays and then can go to city/town web site.
Nice video, nice trip. I always carry lots of water. lots to drink and lots to pour under my jacket which I keep closed believe or not. Another trick if you're in a motel and can stick your helmet in the refrig for the night that can help. You should shoot for the Trans Labrador Highway one day. Ride on! Be safe!
@@AstheMagpieFlies between needed time for refills, and not every pharmacy carrying what you need you have to plan down the road for a pick up. But not so far that you run out before the refill.
@@AstheMagpieFlies awesome! questions answered. My one and only bike is a Shadow Sabre 1100. A bit too much for my first bike but a year later it just feels awesome =) Have fun=)
Hum guess they wasnt kidding about calling it the Badlands . Nope but came close. Had cheap wore out phone holder slip out watched it hit the tank bounce off road watch Buddy almost run it over .I went down the get on ramp up the get off ramp had stop at top of the ramp put my foot in hole dropping my bike with me and wife on it jump snatched the bike up ask wife if she was ok road back found phone . Wife jump off pick phone up it only had little crack at buttom . Kept phone for another year. . Phone and bike was ok me I was sore for couple days from trying to hold and snaching it up way I did.
Anything to get the shot, remember Neil XD
YEEESH that is incredibly frustrating, unplanned updates are the bane of my existence!
your adventure is truly inspiring
Thank you Eddy 😊
No not on a trip just after I threw it against a concrete wall and it shattered into a million pieces... Thanks for sharing... Much love... Stay healthy and safe...
oh gosh! lol Thanks Chuck!
@@AstheMagpieFlies yea I hate technology
Just watching this video. In Pierre you were only 90 miles away from me. Glad you had a good trip. Too bad it was so hot!!
Thanks Chuck :)
The Badlands look bad a$$. 2022 will be my year for Sturgis. I hope to get a chance to see that as well. As far as phone replacement, 2 years in a row, while visiting my sister during the holidays. Love your videos.❤️
Thanks David! I hope your trip is epic!
haha sounds like your sister's house is dangerous for phones lol
1) Your videography skills continue to impress, Amanda. You're very talented. 2) I can ride with your bro for hours without neither of us saying a word. :) 3) Freedom reigns in South Dakota!
Yas Thank you I really appreciate that! haha yes, and yes. :) Thanks Mr. Solitude
so so many cornfields.
No I did not get to see the lightening bugs lol
haha XD that's pretty impressive.
That's really corny at 10:15... Hehe. I LOVE your videos, keep 'em coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Great content, Badlands look spectacular. Looking forward to the next instalment. 🇬🇧
Thanks so much Michael!!
How great to have a road angel supply you with water.😇
Right?! She was so freaking cool.
Would love to do a ride cross country one day
cool video really lucky to travel with your brother looks so fun love it for you your awesome
I AM really lucky I was able to convince brother to come along with me for a bit. Wish he could have joined me for more of it
Thank you Karry! :D
Love your videos !!! Memories that will last you a lifetime !!!!
Thanks so much Sam!
Thanks very much friend
The Badlands is another beautiful place. I'm glad you and your brother got to see it. Negative on the phone replacement. I had Sprint and the only tower they had in SD was in Sioux City, no reception in most of the western states. 👍😎
Thank you David! me too!
Oh gosh! Makes me glad I have Verizon!
I’m really enjoying your videos! The creative things you do in your videos to create an outro to a scene or to transition into a new one is impressive. I’m taking notes and using them in my own content, I hope that’s alright! 😂
Thanks so much! lol glad I could offer inspiration
The Badlands are amazing looking - great stuff!
They are! Thanks man!
Great video! Out there doing the thing! Love the little dance party in the Badlands and on the bike by the windmills! Loved the music in this episode! Sad to see brother leave 😕. Rolling on with the adventure! Minnesota woohooo 👍🏻
Thanks Cliff! :)
Me too, I will have to make sure more adventures with brother happen in the future!!
For sure! heat is no joke lol
Thanks Stuart
The architecture was beautiful !! But I think Colorado is top of my going back list rn, then Deadwood, and West Virginia lol
Top video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Erwin Ballings !
My dream bike honda cb500x ❤️❤️
Your brother has inspired me to go for a ride on my old black V strom today and also to trim up my beard.
haha Awesome XD
Fabulous! Badlands looks amazing!
Thank you MotoSera !
You got it going on don’t stop :)
Thank you Yuren Marquez !
****probably the shortest comment I will ever make**** I know I am not alone in saying this... You make me smile!
No phone replacements ON a trip but two AFTER lol
😂 Thank you Falcro lol I appreciate that!
When you’re just on the bike, how often are you recording footage? All the time, or only when there’s something interesting? Great videos!
Thanks Robin!
Dancing the Badlands...😬🤣🤣💃💃💃 It’s a beautiful place, but can be unforgiving. By, brother.... no shame in eating steamed vegetables out of the bag, I’ve done it plenty of times.
You got that right! lol
I was torn between being proud of spending so little on dinner, and also feeling like I probably could have put that in a bowl XD
Very nice video Amanda. I haven’t had to replace a phone on a trip. Yet lol
Thank you David! :)
Wow good luck
Yep it was!
Cicadas are music to Midwesterners and Southerners
Enjoying your series. Nice Buggy shield shot and Dancing on a ridge shot. Your brother is the quiet one in the family.
As always - love your vids and ur bro is soooo mellow
Thank you D Medina , I really appreciate that! lol he is pretty mellow, I didn't realize until I got back and was editing that I managed to like not get any shots of him talking XD
@@AstheMagpieFlies lol awesome! He seems as he figured all of it out lol
Amanda love your Videos and Advise!!! How do you like your Scorpion Gear? How does it handle 10 degree weather?
Thanks so much Scott!
The Scorpion Gear is great for just about everything except for the rain and snow.
I think for the cold though that has a lot to do with your layering system FIRST, /then/ you're outer layer. I have a whole video about riding in the cold here (and yes my Scorpion gear is in the video too): ua-cam.com/video/Takw0E-GgH0/v-deo.html
@@AstheMagpieFlies I used to live in Gresham and worked at Pacific Office Automations in Beaverton right off The 26. Yes those were some cold rides into work.
What year is your Honda??!! I ❤️❤️ love it!
Its a 2016 Honda Cb500xa 👌 thanks so much!
first up amanda good video
and can you tell me your name as the magpie flies
is that named after a black and white bird
because thats a magpie here in australia lol
👍👍👍😊😊😊💕💕💕
Thanks 😊
Ya I was in such a rush I never really knew where I'd be for the night until maybe an hour before, not super ideal if you're trying to be a good guest lol I missed a lot of people on this one! Hopefully the next go around is a little less hectic buuut who knows, it's me after all lol
@@AstheMagpieFlies looks like you could have been in our corn field too🤣😂😁Stay safe sweetie, totally understand!
Never lost my phone on a trip but I always try and put it inside my jacket in the secure pocket. ;)
Brother didn't loose his phone though lol he broke it XD
@@AstheMagpieFlies I probably knew that and figured it was a drop thing that broke it.
Love it. Thx
Thank you WildOn2s Vlog !
Obviously I’ve missed some eps. When did she change her bike?
My phone is provided by work, I got it in 2016
and they keep trying to upgrade me and I just ask why? This one still works. I'm not a huge phone guy... :-)
Lol that's right! Anything to get the shot 😂
Just curios do you prefer camping or finding a hotel for the night ?
If BOTH were readily available, and money were no object, I don't really have a personal preference overall.
Hoteling it is more convenient but sucks budget wise and doesn't really inspire my creativity. Camping is beautiful most of the time, easier on the wallet, but not convenient or good for making miles (ie using every scrap of sunlight to get as far as possible), can result in some cramped muscles if you didn't get the most ideal spot to lay your sleeping pad, but fuels my creativity in a way that makes me just want to capture everything. Everything has pros and cons lol
Finding Camping spots in the Midwest/East Coast during the Pandemic however became VERY complicated/difficult without making reservations really far in advance.
For future reference - I use All Stays and then can go to city/town web site.
yep they do. and every one I came across was either full or closed because of Covid.
@@AstheMagpieFlies ;>{
Question - what helmet Mount do you have on your scorpion helmet?
It's linked in the description friend!
Nice video, nice trip. I always carry lots of water. lots to drink and lots to pour under my jacket which I keep closed believe or not. Another trick if you're in a motel and can stick your helmet in the refrig for the night that can help. You should shoot for the Trans Labrador Highway one day. Ride on! Be safe!
Yep.
Thanks Gary
Never had to replace a phone. Just had to find a place for medication refills. It can be a pain.
Yeesh I can only imagine Michael!
@@AstheMagpieFlies between needed time for refills, and not every pharmacy carrying what you need you have to plan down the road for a pick up. But not so far that you run out before the refill.
I live in N. E. Mississippi by 78/I22 highway. If you cross the Tenn-tom waterway at Fulton. I would love a shout out.....
