@@vintage_sole4065 Only thing I'm slightly worried about is burn-in, but I figured if I can match brightness to the Switch, (at least in theory) I could see a similar amount of time before burn-in takes place I say this because the OLED Deck hits brightness levels the Switch can't, so running on those settings makes the Deck burn in faster in all those stress tests

The only reason other companies dont also do their own OS is because they cant afford to. Valve can eat the development coats all day long while the other companies would just go bankrupt trying to do the same. Thankfully any and all optimizations for the Steam deck can be applied to all other handhelds pretty much overnight with the help of the modding community and linux community. If they ever release SteamOS then you won't even need to do that. @hydra4370

I still have an original steam deck and I don't even have any other problems you guys keep complaining about, joystick drift button sticking maybe my unit's one in a million
I see this as a win!. Rog Ally doesn't have touchpads like the steamdeck. Hopefully Valve finally releases a Steam Controller 2 for systems like the Rog Ally!

SC2 should have at the very least parity if not even more features than Steam Deck and, for all intents and purposes it will be the ultimate gamepad for all kind of PC gaming. We can't really rely on console manufacturers to pull their heads out of their arses. Controller like DualSense Edge (there are also 0 valid reasons why it should cost that much...) should've been the standard across all platforms over a decade ago already yet we're still stuck with X360 gamepad as the baseline games are being made for...
All valve needs to do is remove screen from steamdeck and glue controls together + add battery that lasts for days and voila.. Best controller in the world. I really hope they do it.
Getting an Ally X tomorrow super excited. Don't have any handhelds except been playing GeForce now on my Samsung so this will be huge upgrade for me. will prob sell it next year if the new Gen of rdna/zen comes out, if anyone wants to buy it off me then lol
My X button used to stick a lot. After a while it stopped and now I forget it was ever an issue. I don't think it's likely to _start_ happening, it was like a tolerances issue out if the factory. So if it wasn't there at the beginning it's not something you're likely to see.
I managed to get a perfect unit. I bought an OLED recently. No sticky buttons, No odd spring noises from triggers, no issues with bumpers hitting the housing, No issues with the screen, no issues with "weak" haptics, no WiFi or Bluetooth issues, the only thing I haven't tested is the widespread headphone jack static issue. One Unrelated issue I have run into is having a dock with Ethernet connected. It seems if you are connected to Ethernet and WiFi the deck with have issues with internet connectivity as though it cant decide which to use for your connection
This was very common in launch models and some new releases are still plagued by it. My deck is a launch release and my B button sticks; its not hard to fix, just take the front shell off and file the shell down a little bit, but im lazy
I'm a new SD owner and I must say that I will take the drop of performance anyday over using Windows and Asus. I own an Asus laptop with a better AMD APU and an OLED screen and was never able to really use it for gaming as it's a screaming banshee and always has issues with Windows. Also, the "controller part" is so good that I wish I could plug my Deck to a PC as a controller. Valve, it's really time to make a new Steam Controller (a true one, not the Hori thing).
Interesting, I do have the original Ally. I really love it and havent had any issues. I always put a plastic case on it to help with the bottom not digging into your hands and they are like $20 or so. Maybe I will need to give the X a try but I am seriously satisfied with my Ally

Personally, I still cant bring myself to get any of the other windows handhelds. I love the auxiliary track pads on the Steam Deck. I just wish the Steam Deck had more system memory to help with a few games hard-locking and for a smoother desktop experience (yes I like to use desktop mode, and yes I do multi-task on the deck). The Track Pads on the Zotac Zone are what piqued my interest on the handheld, but the battery size and Price turned me away from it.
I have my 2tb LCD Steam Deck.... the Ally X is tempting, and solves the problem of needing to dual boot the Deck just to play GamePass and Call of Duty games... and that 2280 drive support.... 4tb for like $180-200...very tempting..
never had any issues with my deck overall, i think the ally x is a mega scam it really should be the replacement to the z1 extreme model and just be the same price but i do think the ally could be really great using lossless scaling frame gen and i feel that would give it a notable edge over the deck if you dont want to bother installing windows on your deck

I can tell you with absolute certainty if I didn't have one yet and the choice was a SD OLED or a ROG Ally X I would still pick the SD. For me the Ally is my go to device. There’s nothing it can’t run or do. I use it for xcloud, ps remote play and installing game pass games. I could never use the Steam Deck
One thing I like with the design of the Ally is the ability to use a cheap adapter to enable swapping the 2230 M.2 for a 2280 model allowing you to expand storage beyond the 2tb max size of 2230 M.2's.
I'm still not convinced that I should spend an extra $150-$250 on the Ally X over getting an OLED Deck, with my main sticking points being that Windows is still gunna get in the way of play, and I just don't trust Asus to provide good customer service, and not to cook more MicroSD cards and slots. The Damage is Done.

Thanks for the unbiased professional review! I own and love both, and I am forever thankful to Valve for kicking off this new market becoming mainstream, but I do personally prefer the Ally just so I can play all my games without having to tinker a ton to get them to work. Both are amazing devices, and there's something to be said about Steam Deck's power for its lower price. I'm sticking with my OG Ally for now with it's 4tb SSD. But I am a huge fan of what all these companies are doing and we the consumers are the ones winning in all of this competition. I can't wait to see what the future brings for Ally 2 and SD 2. I'm just curious, have you ever thought of becoming a handheld channel vs just a Steam Deck channel? I'd love to see more of your content across all handhelds and not just Steam Deck.
Indeed the only thing matter more is the steam deck program is what makes steam deck great. If your a not pc gamer don't sant to tweak every single game steam deck is here. Since rog handheld windows is not made for handheld that where you got to tweak a lot of things with it

they are very comparable. yes they have different APU, however they are in the same market and appeal to different customers. They also have different price brackets. PC handhelds have been pitted against each other LONG before the Steam Deck came into the space. Those handhelds that came before all used many different generations of mainly "off the shelf" AMD APUs.
I love my GPD Win Mini as my one and only. Its the lightest most compact 7" handheld out there with a built-in touchpad and keyboard. I pocket a 92.5Wh movespeed power bank if I want extra battery but honestly I rarely need it as I optimize most games to run at a locked 40 on 80hz or 120hz with Ciphray's bat.
I bought a Steamdeck Oled and an Ally at the same time, I got told by a lot of people I would end up ditching the Steamdeck, I didn't want to believe it but I sold the steamdeck last night. Not just because of the performance, but mainly because I am a proficient Windows user and Linux feels very foreign to me. I have run Linux for a few months on a desktop before but ultimately I ended up going back to Windows and never looked back... I probably should have realized that before I bought the Steamdeck...
I have a Steam Deck and an old (2019) gaming laptop with Windows 10 on it. The laptop gets too overheated to game on, so my Steam Deck is what I use for a gaming device. But the laptop is very handy for everything I would need windows for.
I play Destiny 2 and still got a Steam Deck (512GB LCD model), I wouldn’t wanna play that game on a handheld, no matter how much the grind is real. 🤣 I did recently get a 1TB SSD for it during Prime Day. I also wanna replace the thumb sticks with some Hall effect ones, but otherwise I’m set between that my gaming PC, PS5; and Nintendo Switch.
I'd say get the Lenovo Legion Go, more comfortable controls, is beefy enough to handle most game, costs the same price as the Steam Deck OLED and has a unique controller that turns into a mouse and it's actually really good.

90% of people will be fine with the old steam LCD model and the old Ally. Just pick them up right now. Half the price of the new unit and only 10% lower performance.
The second USB C port is a USB 4.0 port for an external GPU. I never had the problems he had with the Ally the controls feel fine to me. What I am interested to see is what will the next generation of the Steam Deck be. Will more companies bail on Valve like Sony? Will Microsoft actually come in and help Asus and Lenovo make Windows more console friendly or something more sinister and make Xbox OS the new gaming PC OS (Doubtful LOL) Will SEGA come back to the console war? (I hope not) We will find out more next year when more handhelds come out to challenge the Deck for your hands!
im not sure why they all use the indented sticks, when round work so much better. if they were soft arcade ball sticks, it would be better. with that grippy rubber.
I felt the ally buttons felt loose and cheap, my steam deck buttons feel solid and great but I guess it really is personally preference, I'm not a steam deck fan boy btw I was going to get the ally over the steam deck cause I have and love my ROG desktop but way to many things stopped me from getting the rog ally.
For me - I can't understand your view in terms of - "the Ally x isn't that much better in perfomance". I play Cyberpunk and it feels like night and day comparing to the steam deck OD
its because of the native resolution. the gap between them if you play games at their native resolution 800p vs 1080p is not that large. you could drop the ally to 720p and the jump in performance is then large but you lose the benefit of a 1080p screen, thats why they introduced the 900p mode but its still dropping off native res ofcourse. It also does not help that he used elden ring as a point of comparison, i think its pretty well known that elden ring is significantly optimized for steam deck, one of not many games that do perform really well on deck in comparison to z1 machines but that will be his bias shining through, i think he knows this.
@@jinx20001 Yeah. I really don't see why people always try to protect the Steam Deck like their kids. Don't get me wrong - I love my SD for what it is. Without it we wouldn't have those handhelds as we do now. But sometimes people act like it's some kind of religion and reviewers are trying hard to find any downsides in other handhelds (like Windows omg) to lift the SD into the sky. The Ally X outperforms the Deck in every aspect. Comfort and SteamOS are simply a different thing for each person.

For me I feel like they have done enough to make it the better experience overall, windows is not the downside it’s made out to be I don’t think, it has its quirks but nothing damaging to the experience, especially once you are used to it and you can avoid most of it if you just want to game, but having the ability to play anything, anywhere and things like stronger mod support etc… it’s fine, could be better, but so could steam OS.

You can with a usb-c to a dock with hdmi out and usb ports. That’s what I use. There are also smaller alternatives with hdmi out and one usb type-a port. Both have power in usb-c.
You know. Thinking about it, if you have the money to spend, right now the Ally X is a better deal. It has better compatibility with steam, epic, gog, ect. Mod support goes crazy since its just windows. HOWEVER, its important to note that the Steam deck has managed to best all competition up to this point. It took over 2 years for it to get de throned and in the tech world that's crazy to think about. Not to mention The steam deck oled is still a incredible option. Easily the second best. But when the next Steam deck comes out, it will likely blow the Ally X out of the park. As Asus has increased the new standard for both performance and battery life. So at the end of the day, Asus might have forced valve to go even harder on the next Steam deck, which is a absolute win for everyone. Be happy the Steam Deck has been surpassed after 2 years. Because innovation will cause everyone to get better stuff.
40fps is already much better than 30! 45 is not much better than 40🤷. Lock to 40 and tdp 7-10w(on SD. On ally - 15-17w). Great experience and long battery life!
Elden ring could be a perfect 60 the only problem is that From software sucks at optimizing... You have stutters even on a high end pc sadly... but overall... this is the worst comparison what I've saw... FH4/5 are the most optimized games and Elden Ring duh? In a month that's everything you managed to get to do? >.
Just put windows on Steam Deck its a no brainer it runs fabulous and i can get 45 fps. On D2 no problem it runs great it is the sole reason i even bought a steam deck and it worked

Epic games do not support Linux. If a game from Epic has anti cheat forget it. As a Linux user I just grab the free stuff. Buy from Steam for the support.

Thanks for the unbiased professional review! I own and love both, and I am forever thankful to Valve for kicking off this new market becoming mainstream, but I do personally prefer the Ally just so I can play all my games without having to tinker a ton to get them to work. Both are amazing devices, and there's something to be said about Steam Deck's power for its lower price. I'm sticking with my OG Ally for now with it's 4tb SSD. But I am a huge fan of what all these companies are doing and we the consumers are the ones winning in all of this competition. I can't wait to see what the future brings for Ally 2 and SD 2. I'm just curious, have you ever thought of becoming a handheld channel vs just a Steam Deck channel? I'd love to see more of your content across all handhelds and not just Steam Deck.

they are very comparable. yes they have different APU, however they are in the same market and appeal to different customers. They also have different price brackets. PC handhelds have been pitted against each other LONG before the Steam Deck came into the space. Those handhelds that came before all used many different generations of mainly "off the shelf" AMD APUs.
I love my GPD Win Mini as my one and only. Its the lightest most compact 7" handheld out there with a built-in touchpad and keyboard. I pocket a 92.5Wh movespeed power bank if I want extra battery but honestly I rarely need it as I optimize most games to run at a locked 40 on 80hz or 120hz with Ciphray's bat.
I have had my steam deck 2 years now, not even stick drift yet, nvm sticky buttons, never dealt with it

I bought a Steamdeck Oled and an Ally at the same time, I got told by a lot of people I would end up ditching the Steamdeck, I didn't want to believe it but I sold the steamdeck last night. Not just because of the performance, but mainly because I am a proficient Windows user and Linux feels very foreign to me. I have run Linux for a few months on a desktop before but ultimately I ended up going back to Windows and never looked back... I probably should have realized that before I bought the Steamdeck...
Yeh, tha same to me, I quickly got tired of dealing with Linux quirks and problems and switched to Windows handheld (Legion Go).
SteamOS is very different from desktop Linux. The user interface is more similar to the Nintendo Switch. I'm surprised you found it challenging.
I have a Steam Deck and an old (2019) gaming laptop with Windows 10 on it. The laptop gets too overheated to game on, so my Steam Deck is what I use for a gaming device. But the laptop is very handy for everything I would need windows for.
linux hiccups is seriously annoying, i get it.however windows on a handheld is EVEN WORSE.
I only used desktop mode on steam deck the first day. Then again I only play steam games so no reason to fiddle around for me.
I play Destiny 2 and still got a Steam Deck (512GB LCD model), I wouldn’t wanna play that game on a handheld, no matter how much the grind is real. 🤣 I did recently get a 1TB SSD for it during Prime Day. I also wanna replace the thumb sticks with some Hall effect ones, but otherwise I’m set between that my gaming PC, PS5; and Nintendo Switch.

I'd say get the Lenovo Legion Go, more comfortable controls, is beefy enough to handle most game, costs the same price as the Steam Deck OLED and has a unique controller that turns into a mouse and it's actually really good.

90% of people will be fine with the old steam LCD model and the old Ally. Just pick them up right now. Half the price of the new unit and only 10% lower performance.
The second USB C port is a USB 4.0 port for an external GPU. I never had the problems he had with the Ally the controls feel fine to me. What I am interested to see is what will the next generation of the Steam Deck be. Will more companies bail on Valve like Sony? Will Microsoft actually come in and help Asus and Lenovo make Windows more console friendly or something more sinister and make Xbox OS the new gaming PC OS (Doubtful LOL) Will SEGA come back to the console war? (I hope not) We will find out more next year when more handhelds come out to challenge the Deck for your hands!

memory might be restrictive if you're using a lot of mods but minecraft will probably run better on linux than on windows
im not sure why they all use the indented sticks, when round work so much better. if they were soft arcade ball sticks, it would be better. with that grippy rubber.
I felt the ally buttons felt loose and cheap, my steam deck buttons feel solid and great but I guess it really is personally preference, I'm not a steam deck fan boy btw I was going to get the ally over the steam deck cause I have and love my ROG desktop but way to many things stopped me from getting the rog ally.

For me - I can't understand your view in terms of - "the Ally x isn't that much better in perfomance". I play Cyberpunk and it feels like night and day comparing to the steam deck OD
its because of the native resolution. the gap between them if you play games at their native resolution 800p vs 1080p is not that large. you could drop the ally to 720p and the jump in performance is then large but you lose the benefit of a 1080p screen, thats why they introduced the 900p mode but its still dropping off native res ofcourse. It also does not help that he used elden ring as a point of comparison, i think its pretty well known that elden ring is significantly optimized for steam deck, one of not many games that do perform really well on deck in comparison to z1 machines but that will be his bias shining through, i think he knows this.

@@jinx20001 Yeah. I really don't see why people always try to protect the Steam Deck like their kids. Don't get me wrong - I love my SD for what it is. Without it we wouldn't have those handhelds as we do now. But sometimes people act like it's some kind of religion and reviewers are trying hard to find any downsides in other handhelds (like Windows omg) to lift the SD into the sky. The Ally X outperforms the Deck in every aspect. Comfort and SteamOS are simply a different thing for each person.
@@Flo.891 yeh I know what you mean, I do have a steam deck OLED and it’s awesome, but I also have an ally and will be taking delivery of the ally x tomorrow. For me I feel like they have done enough to make it the better experience overall, windows is not the downside it’s made out to be I don’t think, it has its quirks but nothing damaging to the experience, especially once you are used to it and you can avoid most of it if you just want to game, but having the ability to play anything, anywhere and things like stronger mod support etc… it’s fine, could be better, but so could steam OS.

I wanted to do a steam deck as a mobile emulation device as well. Am I able to plug it into my tv and use a Xbox gamepad as well?
You can with a usb-c to a dock with hdmi out and usb ports. That’s what I use. There are also smaller alternatives with hdmi out and one usb type-a port. Both have power in usb-c.

okay but lets talk about the right joystick making your finger slip touching the screen so many times it gets annoying.
You know. Thinking about it, if you have the money to spend, right now the Ally X is a better deal.
It has better compatibility with steam, epic, gog, ect.
Mod support goes crazy since its just windows.
HOWEVER, its important to note that the Steam deck has managed to best all competition up to this point. It took over 2 years for it to get de throned and in the tech world that's crazy to think about.
Not to mention The steam deck oled is still a incredible option. Easily the second best.
But when the next Steam deck comes out, it will likely blow the Ally X out of the park. As Asus has increased the new standard for both performance and battery life.
So at the end of the day, Asus might have forced valve to go even harder on the next Steam deck, which is a absolute win for everyone.
Be happy the Steam Deck has been surpassed after 2 years. Because innovation will cause everyone to get better stuff.

How about lock to 45fps what is better? Locked 30fps or 45fps? At least compare apples to apples
40fps is already much better than 30! 45 is not much better than 40🤷. Lock to 40 and tdp 7-10w(on SD. On ally - 15-17w). Great experience and long battery life!

Elden ring could be a perfect 60 the only problem is that From software sucks at optimizing... You have stutters even on a high end pc sadly... but overall... this is the worst comparison what I've saw... FH4/5 are the most optimized games and Elden Ring duh? In a month that's everything you managed to get to do? >.

Just put windows on Steam Deck its a no brainer it runs fabulous and i can get 45 fps. On D2 no problem it runs great it is the sole reason i even bought a steam deck and it worked

Epic games do not support Linux. If a game from Epic has anti cheat forget it. As a Linux user I just grab the free stuff. Buy from Steam for the support.
