You definitely need to check out BORACITY MAGAZINE - BTS VS RADIO. The American music industry is definitely doing 'pay to play' on radio but what they use big time to get their artists to chart is bundling. Including digital copies of albums with concert tickets, t-shirts and mugs and then saying their artist had the #1 selling album. It's bs but that's how they roll.
56:20 "They're doing their own stunts"....EXACTLY. That's what made the chart manipulation accusations so ridiculous. At the time, even though BTS weren't unsuccessful per se (if you look at other factors beyond music show wins, endorsements, etc) the label itself was not even breaking even, hence to film I Need U they were using their own staff at actors and even their cars, etc. In many way, The Most Beautiful Moments in Life Pt.1 (HYYH) was a make it or break it album for them. The accusations actually went so far as BH having to go to court to prove they weren't even financially able to cheat. Their album sales had been gradually becoming on par with acts from the Big 3 over their 1st 2 years, and even the year before in 2014 at KCon in LA their international following was more then apparent and it was estimated that of the 20k crowd in the arena at least half were there for BTS, but BH didn't have the pull or clout to get a lot of media play, minimal coverage, etc so when they beat out local big names it came as a shock to those in SK. 💜
No, Sejin is not their manager anymore, but he was for a very long time, lived with them when they were starting, and they trust him and consider him their big brother. He's done many great things for Bangtan and gave them a lot of stability! Managers in Korea are very active and busy, but always next to them or in the background. They not only look after the band, but also try to get them on music shows, travel with them, organize everything... It's a damn hard job! Just wanted to bring more context for 2 things. 1. In the I need you video (which it only showed 2 seconds of ) the members are kinda “un aliving”themselves in the video and that’s why it made people cry and was a bit alarming. 2. We (most of us) definitely are aware of what Payola is. BTS’s company has never participated in that and never will. They never cheat, and it is obviously highly illegal in Korea. Not like here in the west where no one really gives a shit. That is the reason you never heard of them before this ,or hear them get played on the radio even if the song is in English. It would have to take a radio DJ that generally likes them to actually play them once in a while, which barely ever happens. And when it does some of us take a video clip of it on the radio and post it on Twitter to show people. Oh my God they’re on the radio.!!That part sucks for us but it is what it is. 💜🥂
Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. So actually Big Hit does not pay radio stations this is why BTS is not played often no matter if the army requests it the most. HYBE i don't know about. Big Hit does PR with radio DJs and some of them do play the songs in other states but here in NYC it's rare to hear BTS on the local radio. I think there is a Kpop radio that plays BTS and others but i think it's run by a fan. Army here in the states learned the hard way about payola. We have info vids on it. I watched one as abby army 5 yrs ago and was shocked. Was not aware about the corruption here. In Korea the Big 3 pay reporter's, show hosts, entertainment companies, etc. to play their groups music, to write articles about their groups, etc. Appreciate u continuing your reactions on the Rise of Bangtan. Adore this series. Have rewatched 100 times. Love the song. They deserved to win all the awards for that song. And Big Hit was a really small agency back than. The choreo is cool too. Good chap. Yoongi said that he actually wrote I Need U with the mindset that it was their last song, they thought they were going to be forced to disband, but thankfully I Need U blew up in a major way and saved them, after that every release was bigger than the last :) BTS were monster rookies who did very well with making fans and having that connection, but it's expensive to be in the kpop industry and having a lot of fans doesn't cut it. They got no work outside of music that would give them money, they weren't paid for a lot of their gigs, they couldn't book things like commercials, appearances etc, all because they were from a small company, but small company idols really need those things to bring in revenue. This is also why wins on music shows are very important to small labels, especially that first win, because it signals to other shows and companies that the idols are popular and worth hiring/bringing onto shows, it brings a lot of job opportunities with it. This was also their second major disbandment scare, because before danger they were also very close to being forced to disband, but BigHit actually got an investment from another company before danger which helped them get danger out. They put their everything into danger, including the new investment money, and when danger didn't do as well as their previous song that's when they thought they were doomed, but thankfully their next release was I Need U (Credit to lovely ARMY: @iduli02)
At least in the US, BTS has been mostly an internet phenomenon with limited to no radio play until its full English tracks. Even then, despite topping the Billboard Hot 100, radio play was not a huge factor. The narritive has been that Big Hit now Hybe was averse to the payola system. BTS would attend radio interviews which did not result in radio play. This kind of supports that narrative. The Korean language also has been used as an excuse despite their being able to perform at the AMA or Billboard awards with largely Korean tracks. Now there is a HYBE America, I am not sure if things have changed but I still think the internet is the key driver of exposure. I will say I hear tracks in nonradio media such as sports or advertising backgrounds.
Enjoyed the reaction as alwas. You giving us more insights into the workings of the music industry would be great - maybe you could do it in commentary form with some of Boracity Magazine's videos that also delve into these topics.
I am sure someone has already mentioned this, but when BTS mention their ages is is almost always korean age, which is where you are age 1 the day you are born, and turn at the beginning of the year so it is always 1 to 2 years older than universal age. Korea changed to standardized age a few years ago but they often keep using their korean age. For example, Jin is 31 but in several of his Run Jin variety shows he filmed in the past few months he states he is 33. Also JK stated he joined as a trainee at 15, but it was actually age 13. So just keep that in mind when watching and korean content.
PD's have a hell of a lot of power in Korea! There are many scandals and corruption. They get exposed now and then and it's a big thing. But nothing changes... 🤷♀️
Oh we know we know payola for radio spins in the USA. We know about the fact BTS company got accused of buying their own albums to hype album sales. It went to court in the end with accounts and fans even sending in screen shots and copies of their receipts for the album they bought. It was also at a time when the company didn't have money and was proven in court that the album sales were real albums sales not company people buying the albums. Some of us are old enough to remember when artist companies used to send agents into record shops to bulk buy a artist album or single record. Some of us have been in the industry some of have friends/contacts in the industry. ARMY know's how it all works.
Weekly shows aren't really a competition mainly, this didn't really explain them well. Basically it's like Jimmy Fallon, James Corden etc, as in they're places where kpop idols go to promote their new songs and perform them live. They do little interviews and then at the end the "competition" is more like an extra entertainment segment. All of Korea's main tv networks have their own Weekly Show, which means there's a show 6 days a week, and idols usually perform at all of them for a few weeks during promotions. At the end of each show they crown the "song of the week", all the shows have slightly different criteria. The shows don't give artists anything for wining, except showcase that they have a popular song which gives them a bit more credibility among other shows, advertisers and companies etc. It's a really big deal for small company idols because it means their song became big enough to win, and it also gives them more exposure. Winning makes it more likely for them to get more promotion opportunities because it shows that they're somewhat popular. It's also harder for them to even get a spot on the shows, bts often didn't and when they did they were cut out or their performances were shortened, so winning also means that the shows will be more likely to put them on air. For big company idols winning is just whatever. It doesn't necessarily give them any benefits they don't already have, and they usually win their first music show the first time they perform at one or at the very least with their debut song later on in the week. The biggest benefit in winning for them is that the idols get happy. There's actually almost no resemblance to x-factor or the other show mentioned, I'd never compare them because it gives the wrong idea. It's not an active competition of any kind, the broadcasting stations just celebrate the most popular song of the week on their network, since all of them also have streaming sites.
While it is not like X factor, it kind of is perceived as a competition by the fans, and by the artists. Everyone follows to see who won that specific week, so while it was not a clear description in TROB, it gives a decent idea of what it ment back then to BTS to win in these shows.
Being a new kpop artist/group is like being in a pressure cooker. Btw Frankie, this series is not called "The rise of THE Bangtan" . It’s "The Rise Of Bangtan ".

@Frankie Biggz, isn’t Payola illegal? It is different on The foreign charts, such as South Korea or Southeast Asia compared to international charts like the UK and the United States? Also, BTS have been accused of many things, but never payola. HYBE/BIGHIT label Refuse to do payola, especially in the United States. And they did not use Payola in South Korean chart Boosting up of BTS song(s) BTS did this organically according to the records the ARMYs Streaming and buying physical albums is what got them at number one on the billboard hot 100 charts six times. To me, I think it’s illegal for major record labels to pay Large sums of money so that their artist can be played on an hourly basis in a rotation with other songs as what I know from radio stations. the DJs get a set list of artist songs That will be played in a rotation on an hourly basis, so therefore you get that earworm effect where people will like stream and even buy the physical album to help boost the artist on the charts, which will go towards billboard awards and Grammys. BTS In South Korea on those Competition shows on TV. They finally got their first win in 2015 and that’s because the fans were allowed to vote for their favorite K-pop groups . ARMYs were directly responsible For helping BTS get that win and we have continue to do that right now. We are still streaming BTS‘s songs as group as well as their solo album projects and they are reaching multiple billboard status not just only in Southeast Asia, but also in the international billboard.
Here in the UK radio is strictly monitored so in order to hold a radio broadcasting licence you need 2 licences one to air an the other is a oh flipping eck I forget what it's called now. But the radio station has to pay 6monthly amount to a seperate governing body that pays out to the artist company an amount every time an artist song is broadcast. Without both papers a Radio station is unable to legally be on air. Radio stations can't accept money from artist companies/artists. The Radio stations pay the artist their royalities this is goes with our copyright laws. In the UK Radio stations or any establishment that plays artist song to the public need a public broadcasting license so that the artist get paid for the radio or establishment using their music. It's the reason Brain May of Queen was able to Stop Trump from using one of their songs at a Trump rally.
@eileencritchley4630, I believe that the artist will get royalties, but when it comes to certain things in the United States, especially radio stations payola is still a number one problem and that’s why BTS and their company HYBE refused to do payola in order to get their music on the United States radio! And that was a major factor in the United States on the radio stations back in 2018 and 2019 especially before the pandemic BTS did a lot of radio promotions where they do on air interviews. BTS would be invited to a radio station for an interview and prior to the interview ARMYs would send bouquets of flowers to the radio station, fruit, baskets, cupcakes, etc. to the radio station, requesting that the radio station would put BTS‘s song in the hourly rotation so that it could be aired like the rest of the United States artist. Giving BTS a chance to be more internationally, exposed and known on the radio station. We all know that the three English songs that BTS did, “. Dynamite “, “. Butter”, “. Permission to. Dance”. Did get some exposure on the radios in the United States, but it was very short-lived and they didn’t get as many spins as the American artist got on the radio stations. I believe this channel, particularly kind of promotes the payola situation and I am not a fan of it. I think it’s unfair. I think that smaller record companies don’t have the money to pay a radio station to have their artist be more exposed and put in a hourly rotation. I ,myself support BTS and many times when their songs come out in a comeback and they’re being promoted in the United States. I try to call all the local radio stations and request a BTS songs. They give us like “oh yeah sure “,and then they never play their songs, but that’s how BTS is treated differently in the United States when it comes to playing their songs . It’s unfair and it’s not giving smaller artist a chance to be more well-known. Thank you for your input and response to my comment BoraHae 💜
Yes, I believe Payola is illegal but companies always find ways around it. Payola is nothing more than bribes and bribery comes in many forms: money, favors, perks, etc. Look at our politicians. Anytime a company can do something to cause another to treat or classify someone or something more favorably is a form of payola/bribery. Spotify changes up their metrics to benefit one artist over another. YT also has different metrics for "views".
Sorry the payola part exists of course; but by the time they had their first win (2015) Hybe didn't exist, it was Bighit and it was at the verge of banckrupsy. There was not way they would be able to pay for anything. Besides all the industry: tv radio music etc, at that time was under the big 3 dominance, that's why at that time they didn't have any media publications, they didn't participate in shows etc. The guys never participate in payola until this day. If not, with all the popularity they have, here in the US you will hear them in the radio all day long, but they release and album and they hardly have spins.. why? because they don't PAY.
BigHit was NOT one of the big 3. It is a very different thing now because of BTS. They built that house. At the time of I Need U, they were almost bankrupt and had no power. The idea that they could afford to buy their own albums is a joke. I have always found it funny that the people who accuse think of these things because they are doing it. And payola is still happening. Army is very aware because we don't get radio play in the States. 😘💜🫰🏻🫶🏻 Cats will be cats 😂😂😂🐈

Only problem is ROB twists their journey a bit and doesn't show their hardships pretty much at all, which is why this might shock you but bts were VERY close to disbanding before this due to lack of funds, they weren't doing well enough to stay afloat monetarily.
Yoongi said that he actually wrote I Need U with the mindset that it was their last song, they thought they were going to be forced to disband, but thankfully I Need U blew up in a major way and saved them, after that every release was bigger than the last :)
BTS were monster rookies who did very well with making fans and having that connection, but it's expensive to be in the kpop industry and having a lot of fans doesn't cut it.
They put their everything into danger, including the new investment money, and when danger didn't do as well as their previous song that's when they thought they were doomed, but thankfully their next release was I Need U

Excited!!!
I have it on my list!
Yes! Army has informed me about this! 💜 Thank you!
@frankiebiggz I am sure it can get a bit annoying when we all say the same stuff over and over again. Sorry, and have an awesome day.
Nooo, I love the fact that you guys enjoy teaching me! I don't care reading it more than once! Borahae 💜
@@frankiebiggz thanks. You are awesome. Loved all the weekend reactions.
Interesting! Thanks for the insights!
Little by little, I started calling it The Rise of the BANGTANG... so give me time until my brain processes this info... 😂😂😂 Thanks!!!

Seria lindo saber desde tu perspectiva como trabajador de la industria sobre ese tema de payola

I don't know how they stand people disturbing them like that while they sleep. I don't even like when someone looks at me while I'm sleeping.
That is just creepy... lol....
@Frankie Biggz, isn’t Payola illegal?
It is different on The foreign charts, such as South Korea or Southeast Asia compared to international charts like the UK and the United States? Also, BTS have been accused of many things, but never payola. HYBE/BIGHIT label Refuse to do payola, especially in the United States. And they did not use Payola in South Korean chart Boosting up of BTS song(s)
BTS did this organically according to the records the ARMYs Streaming and buying physical albums is what got them at number one on the billboard hot 100 charts six times.
@@bereasonable8018 correct.
Yes @eileencritchley! This is what my wife does, she wants to talk about this related to BTS, we have to get a video series about this together.
Payola is a fact.
Word
Sorry the payola part exists of course; but by the time they had their first win (2015) Hybe didn't exist, it was Bighit and it was at the verge of banckrupsy. There was not way they would be able to pay for anything. Besides all the industry: tv radio music etc, at that time was under the big 3 dominance, that's why at that time they didn't have any media publications, they didn't participate in shows etc. The guys never participate in payola until this day. If not, with all the popularity they have, here in the US you will hear them in the radio all day long, but they release and album and they hardly have spins.. why? because they don't PAY.
Billboard put's too much influence on USA radio which is dying in the USA.
It's dying everywhere....
@@frankiebiggz yeah here in the UK we only tend to listen to it get traffic updates when driving.
