    3rd gen MR2 is so underrated. This one is a total piece of garbage yet still ran more laps in 1 day than the Evo did in an entire Gridlife season. 2zz swap would break the K-swap trend G&G has, although could always go 2ar/2gr. I think the stock car with a quality suspension setup would expose your shortcomings as a driver & only make you better while keeping you on the track for endless laps to hone your driving skill. Excited to see the MR2 build continue

    Mark at Frankenstein motor works has engineered a swap kit for the 2ar engine and is doing some wild things with that platform and has been racing them successfully in endurance events for years. If seat time and not breaking is the goal that’s a great platform. Plus it’s 220hp N/A with his tune.

    • @abetra613
      @abetra613 2 роки тому +17

      @@speedacademydave with any swap there are cheaper and expensive ways to get it done. The engines are everywhere as they were found in the 2011+scion tc’s with a 6 speed manual and in the same gen camrys but those are rarely found paired with a manual. A wrecked parts car is typically cheaper than piecing the swap together and mark himself has found an entire parts car I believe as low as 1200. The 2zz would likely be cheaper to swap in if you can get it at a reasonable cost however a 2zz with heavy miles is hard to come by in the markets I’m in. Even those sell at a premium, one with reasonable miles you can really trust to make it through race day over and over is a bit of a unicorn these days. Those engines were fantastic for their time and can still put in amazing lap times but this option gives you 30+ horse power more, more torque, and it’s incredibly robust. Mark has over 40k race miles on one of his engines. With Frankensteins parts the swap can be done in a day and is essentially bolt in. I sound like a shill, but I respect what mark has done for the mr2 community and the knowledge and experimentation he shares for free with the world. I highly encourage anyone who is into Motorsports to check out his channel at the least. His technical knowledge of not just engines but engine and body controls is so vast anyone can learn from it and apply it to any engine and car.

    I had one of these and autocrossed a bunch. 2zz or k24 swaps are easy ;) there's even supercharger options. When cornering at the limit maintenance throttle is key! you need to commit to the corner and not back off abruptly. Ideally you should be able to not give steering input and tighten your radius by lifting or open it up by applying more throttle.

      Since you had one I will ask you this. Do you thing it is worth it to trade my turbo Miata for a 2zz mr2?

    • @dandil
      @dandil 2 роки тому +5

      @@v8_sami depends what you're into. if its a factory miata NB turbo it's definitely worth more money than the aftermarket swap mr2. If they're both home brew then what experience are you looking for? Miata can be more comfortable while still handling (double wishbone) and safer to drive in terms of spinning out. MR2 will have that mid engine experience which is a different way of driving. It's comparable in acceleration to the NB turbo I guess, though the high RPM v-tec vs turbo experience is different too. One thing to ask: the 2zz can mate to a 5 spd, or 6 spd, and either can have open or torsen diff. best combo is 2zz+6spd+torsen. Def worth it parts! more so than many other gimmicks. Ultimately if you put really sticky rubber on it though you have to do static camber and more roll stiffness, which diminishes your ability to deal with bumps. At high levels it will always be more of a compromise between performance and comfort/bumps upset performance than a miata.

    Driving slow cars fast is always a blast. I did autox in my Camry for years before jumping into my best friends MRS. Too much fun in a lighter mid engine car

    I also bought an MR-S in february 2019 in the UK. It took me a some time to get the car sorted. Some repairs were needed, alignment stuff and so on. I drove it like a daily and really hard on the streeet. If the street gets wet with some semislicks it's a lot of fun to drive this car. Of course it's lacking power but after i saw your videos i started to cut out parts and reduce weight. I unregistered it so i can just run it on the track and it needs a turbo but still never gave up on me even if i kick it sooo hard ;)

    MR2 aka MRS in Asia is a very fun car with 50:50 weight distribution. Perfect car to keep. Price surely would go up!

    • @420CaptainSlow
      @420CaptainSlow 2 роки тому

      MR-S doesn't have 50/50 weight distribution, it's 43/57 which is what gives the MR-S it's willingness to rotate and stability under braking

    Theres 20hp and 1000rpm available in the 1ZZ for about $1500total but a 2ar/1ar swap or a 2ZZ swap is the power solution, new factory bushings and a few alignment parts, rear 245s fronts 225s and that seat change.

    The key factor here is the FUN factor! I would just do engine maintenance and overall fixes especially related to handling components. Then go ahead and enjoy the car (and learn about being a better track racer too). The nice thing about low-powered cars are being able to do stuff like what you mentioned i.e going flat out for long distances and basically doing drifts! LOL. If the car had more power, you definitely would not be recovering so easily from all the under and oversteers. That Porsche owner gave you a thumbs up for a reason: he wouldn't have been able to do the same in his car!!

    If you wanna go a different route than a K-Swap, as many other have suggested, try the 2ZZ-GE engine. You'll make at least 70 more hp and you'll have a screaming top-end at ~8,200 RPM. Yamaha head, a great replacement for your 3rd gen chassis. My dad has a Matrix XRS with that engine, it's so much fun with the 6-speed manual transmission, feels faster than I thought it would be.

    The crazy part about the little 1zz is that it actually sounds pretty good for what it is. I agree with the other people in these comments saying do a 2ar swap. If you take the junkyard 2ar-fxe hybrid motor and play with the cams (frankenstein motorworks has a video on them) you can get them to 250 bhp. Would be a little riot of an engine to have in an MR2, without ruining that flat out feeling

    I say put some good coilovers on it, an aftermarket set of brakes and rotors, put a small turbo kit on it (or even a centrifugal supercharger), and take it back to the track and see what it'll do.

      Adding boost to that engine will just blow it up. So unless that is the goal, the money is just better spent K-swapping it. A supercharger kit would cost more then a K-swap would. He could more then double the HP with out boost with a K-swap. And the sky is the limit with boost on a K-series.
